Helena Chamber Of Commerce n n 2015 Report To The Community n 5

As the oldest chamber in the state of Montana, we are approaching our 125th year in 2015. Our mission to promote business, quality of life, and economic development through local business

alliances has kept us relevant over the years. The Chamber is an indispensable part of our community and a valued resource to our members. Because of the direct services we provide to members and the impact we have on our community, businesses express a sense of pride in being a member of our organization. For a complete listing of our programs and services, please visit our website at helenachamber.com.

Helena is a proud city comprised of people who are passionate about our community. I feel there is a great sense of energy, excitement, and momentum right now in, and around, Helena. Now, more than ever, people want

to get connected and be a part of a network of people who share the same passion and excitement for their community. I’m proud to say that the Chamber offers that- a point upon which people come together to support, encourage, share, learn, educate, and do business with one another. The Shapiro Group did a study in 2012 of the real value of joining a local chamber and found that when consumers knew a business was a chamber member, they were 49% more likely to think favorably about that business and 80% more likely to purchase goods or services from it in the future. Membership DOES matter! If you are currently a member of the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce, I challenge you to step up and make your membership matter. Here are a few ideas to help you make the most of your Chamber Membership:

➧ Stay Informed – Pay attention to our E-Newsletters, Calendar of Events, and don’t skip over the City Commission Reports. Get in the know!

➧ Get Out – We offer monthly events to help you build your network. Go to these events with an open mind and the goal of enhancing your connections. Watch for our new Chamber & Chamber Member Only calendar for upcoming events!

➧ Speak Up – As a member, you matter and so does your voice. Share with us your ideas, opinions, and exciting news!

Get Involved – From our Member Services Committee to the Leadership Helena Program and every opportunity in between, we offer many ways to help you get involved.

➧ Buy In – We are a membership-based, non-profit organization. We rely on your membership to keep us up and running. Please believe in us and show your support. As the number of members continues to grow, and the level of investment that businesses are willing to put in increases, we promise to put that all back into creating more and more value for you.

The Helena Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to be celebrating our 125th year, and excited to see what the future will bring for the Chamber and the Helena Area. Thank you for your continued support.

Proud Supporters of the Helena Area Chamber

What an honor it is to be chosen to lead the Chamber this year. Following in Peter Mollet’s footsteps is going to be difficult as he is such a great leader. I will simply have

to find my own way and would welcome any input from the Membership. In fact, your membership is the most important factor to the Chamber, as without it, there would be no Helena Area Chamber of Commerce. A member recently asked me “What does the Chamber really do for my business?” It kind of caught me off guard and being so involved I thought I really should be able to answer that question without hesitation. My answer should have been “what doesn’t the Chamber do.” All chambers were started for one reason – to be the voice of business. This coming year is a legislative year and you can count on the Chamber to keep an eye on any bills that would affect your business. We will be there to support the bills that are positive for business and to refute any bills that are negative. Our lobbyist, Rhonda Wiggers, knows our position on the issues and will let us know if we need to show up. She will also let us know if something new comes to the table so we can act on it. Each week you will get a legislative update so you are always in the know. The Chamber provides great networking opportunities. Business Before Hours, Business After Hours, The Awards Luncheon, and the Annual Banquet are just some of your opportunities. Get involved in a committee and attend these and other events and I guarantee you will see a return on your membership investment. We also have several advertising opportunities for our members, like the Weekly E-Blast, B2B Magazine, Vacation / Relocation Guide, the City Map, etc. On top of all of that, as a free service, your business is being referred every time someone calls the Chamber to inquire about your type of product or service. The Chamber creates an economic impact for the Helena area with its many events such as the Swish Tournament. This money changes hands an estimated seven times creating quite an impact on our local businesses. We urge all visitors of the Visitor Center at WalMart to stick around, spend the night, eat at our restaurants and of course shop at our stores. The Chamber also sends out thousands of guides to persons interested in vacationing or relocating here in Helena. The Chamber also provides several educational opportunities for you and your employees. Leadership Helena continues to be one of the most worthwhile investments that a person or employer can make. This is according to the graduates themselves. Young Professionals is another avenue for continued education as well as another great networking opportunity. We have had numerous other education opportunities

and this year should be no different. With the feasibility study and the visioning for the new Visitor/Interpretive Center completed, it will be time to move on to the fundraising phase. This is an exciting time and should everything come together we would have a new attraction in Helena that everyone will be proud of. I look forward to working with the Board of Directors and the incredible Chamber Staff in the coming year. We have much to do and my priority will be for the members. I honestly think that my membership is a great value and want you to feel the same. See you at the next event!!! Jim Enyeart, Owner Home Beautifiers Inc.

Helena Chamber Of Commerce n n 2015 Report To The Community n 7

This past year has been themed “Building for

the Future”. This was broken into two catego-

ries – “Building the Building” and “Building the

Chamber." We looked to approach these goals

with Excitement, Enthusiasm, and Engagement.

In “Building the Building” we moved the project

of the Visitor / Interpretive Center to a whole new level.

Our accomplishments were:

➧Contracted and completed a feasibility study with

Faucher Enterprises.

➧ Contracted and completed a series of visioning ses-

sions with SMG Architects to define the scope, commu-

nity and business use, design style and interior needs and

size.

➧ We created a rendition of the building both interior

and exterior. We therefore have gone from an idea to

design of a beautiful building that Helena will be proud of.

➧ Finally, with these tools at hand, we have begun the

process of forming the cabinet to begin the fund raising

process. Next year promises to be an exciting one.

In “Building the Chamber” we seemed to have no

end to the accomplishments of the Chamber and its staff.

Some of these were:

➧ Adding two new personnel to the Chamber Staff -

Cassie Parr / Membership Director, and Anna Strange /

Administrative Assistant. Both are doing wonderful.

➧ Rhonda Retz was promoted to Office & Communi-

cation Director.

➧ Celebrated “Boss of the Year” with the award going

to Dan Bingham – Helena College University of Montana.

➧ Held another successful Swish Tourney – over 80

teams, with an economic impact of between $500,000 to

$750,000 to the community.

➧ Leadership Helena graduated its 31st class of 32

participants who completed 9 months of classes, tours,

and education.

➧ Young Professionals had a very successful year of

programs, events and added a monthly newsletter and we

now have over 150 young business professionals as their

members.

➧ Our Convention and Visitor Bureau continued to do

great things for tourism including producing and distribut-

ing 25,000 Visitor Guides, 10,000 Helena street maps, and

5,000 tear-off maps. Volunteers and staff greeted over

10,000 visitors at our 2 Visitor Information Centers.

➧ The CVB also hosted 4 travel writers who have

produced a great amount of press and articles about the

Helena Area. They also gave away a trip to Helena which

drove over 40,00 additional new visitors to the website.

➧ Two new 40” Flat Screen TVs were placed at our

airport visitor center to entice air travelers to enjoy all that

Helena offers.

➧ Continued to make an

important impact for our mem-

bers with print and promotion.

➧ In partnership with

KTVH we produced 52 weeks

of Chamber Spotlights featur-

ing Chamber Members.

➧ We were very active in

our Government Advocacy

Programs including the City

Commission Reports, success-

fully lobbied for tax abatements

for Boeing & Pioneer Aero-

structures. We also met with

the other 6 urban chambers

to formulate our joint position

papers for the 2015 session

(representing 5500+ businesses)

➧ The Government Affairs committee has worked to

create our own set of position papers important to Helena

and its businesses. In past sessions we have lobbied on

over 100 bills per session.

➧ Had a very successful events calendar with Awards

Luncheon – 340 attendees, Annual Banquet – 820 attend-

ees, Golf Tourney – 33 Teams, 14 Business After Hours,

and 5 Business Before Hours.

➧ Continued to have a national presence, with Cathy

serving on the board for the American Chamber of Com-

merce Executives. What a great resource this has been.

So in conclusion “Building the Chamber” has truly been

a year of Excitement, Enthusiasm, and Engagement. Let’s

embrace this successful year, and look forward to taking

all of it to a next level. To that end I am pleased to wel-

come Jim Enyeart from Home Beautifiers as next year's

Chair. Jim has a wealth of experience serving on the

Chamber as well as numerous other boards and volunteer

positions.

I would also like to thank all of our members and our

community for their support of my term over the last

12 months. It is such a tribute to Helena, that so many

people care so much.

Thank you,

Helena Chamber Of Commerce n n 2015 Report To The Community n 8

The year 2015 is the 125th year for Montana’s old-est Chamber, and the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce remains strong and vibrant! We hope to celebrate that milestone at our events

over the course of the year. With the 17 years prior to 1890 as the Helena Board of Trade, we actually have 142 years combined working to strengthen business for the Capital City! This past year was not a legislative year, however we maintained a strong advocacy effort for business. Besides our city commission reports, we worked on the sign ordi-nance revisions with the Board of Adjustments and City Zoning. We advocated for the tax abatements for Boe-ing Helena and Pioneer Aerostructures. We continued to host the Lunch with Local Government events which saw increased attendance and great support and participation from both the city and county commissions & administra-tors. The Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee lead by Howard Skjervem (NW Energy) also worked hard to prepare for the 2015 legislative session with our position papers needing updating and also to partner with the Coali-tion of Chambers (7 urban chambers) to have joint position papers. Your chamber board showed great leadership and prog-ress in moving along with the steps in securing a new visitor center/chamber office by doing their due diligence. First a feasibility study was conducted and then an architect was secured to work through the visioning portion. Look for more progress to be made this coming year. The chamber continues to do great promotional work for Helena through the Convention and Visitor Bureau. Many ads were placed in national publications and other advertising avenues to entice people to make Helena a destination. This past summer we hosted four highly ac-claimed free-lance writers who have placed many great ar-ticles in publications that we normally wouldn’t have access to or could afford. The work of the CVB is making a big difference in keeping Helena at the forefront for travelers. Some advice for our members is to make sure you and your staff get involved. Volunteer and participate at events, learning opportunities, and other programs to get the most from your investment in the Chamber. It takes over 6,000 hours per year to accomplish all of our success-ful programs, events, activities, and advocacy. With your help, we can make an even bigger difference for the busi-ness community, for your business, and for Helena. New this past year was the addition of job listings and

hot deals for members. With an extremely low cost, mem-bers can reach over 2000 members through email adver-tising to advertise a special or to recruit for a staff position. A reminder for those of you who work for Chamber mem-ber businesses but are not an owner, manager, or CEO: you are ALL members and are in-vited and encouraged to par-ticipate and attend all Cham-ber functions! If your business or organi-zation is not a member of the Helena Chamber, give Cassie Parr – our Membership Direc-tor - a call at 447-1945 to learn about the many benefits and see how you can get on board. With a highly qualified, loyal, and hard-working staff of six employees at the Chamber, we keep BUSINESS as our focus every single work day! The Helena Chamber is your business advocate and the voice of business for the Helena area.

14 n 2015 Report To The Community n Helena Chamber Of Commerce

This year’s Boss of the Year was nominated by a lengthy list of staff and faculty at Helena College and many of those staff members have said they have never had a better boss than Dan Bingham.

Dean Bingham has many attributes that make him a person that is respected and loved as the leader on Helena’s Donaldson and airport campuses. Intercepts from the nomination portray a person who not only supports staff but works to ensure that both campuses have equal resources for faculty and staff, as well as students. He is cognizant of the need to keep them connected, to avoid polarization of the two campuses but rather to make everyone feel part of the institution as a whole. He realizes that the areas of the campus have their long-standing traditions and the need for them to continue those traditions.

And yet, he is diligent to ensure the safety and security of all who participate. In an effort to support staff morale and camaraderie, Dean Bingham made the recommendation to form a Staff Senate. He was integral in the creation of bylaws and made himself available to all meetings to discuss any and all issues. Dean Bingham gives people chances. He allows them to learn from their mistakes and supports them in their personal and professional growth. He cares deeply for everyone on campus and feels a sense of responsibility towards them all. He’s a great listener, kind, good-natured, and understanding. With a fairly large staff, Dean Bingham goes out of his way to get to know everyone working at the campus and shows a genuine interest in their lives. Staff at Helena College are very proud of the fact that Dan strives to keep the college innovative, to lead the pack in two-year education in Montana. Helena College is the only two-year institution in Montana with a true strategic plan and serves as an example to other 2-year campuses across the state – working diligently to create articulation agreements with four-year schools to guarantee enrollment for students

who want to further their education with a bachelor’s degree. Helena College is the only school in the university system that has worked with the Department of Labor and area industries to create a forward-thinking apprenticeship program, the first of many. When the legislature-mandated campus Executive Advisory Councils across the state were disbanded, Dean Bingham gathered together Helena area business and industry individuals who could help guide the college to fit the needs of the community. At the same time, he recruited other community leaders to form the Helena College Foundation, Inc. The primary goal of the Foundation is to help provide additional resources for potential students through scholarships. In addition, the Foundation plans to help build the institution, to improve upon the opportunities of the students, as well as to provide a valuable training resource for the community as a whole. What sets Dean Bingham apart from other bosses? To start with, he is more approachable than many bosses. He always asked the question “Is this what is best for our staff, faculty, and students”? He treats people as they are all on the same level with him. He asks questions. He listens to answers. Then, he finds the solutions. When a staff member has a struggle in their personal life, Dan does what he can to help them through their crisis. Dean Bingham participates in many community events (both related to the campus and unrelated) and volunteers for efforts that will help move the community forward and improve the lives of Helenans and of the students, faculty & staff of Helena College. He is a fervent and dedicated member of the community and has a feeling of responsibility that is really rare. He gives a tremendous amount of time and effort into making business and industry thrive. Summing it all up, Dean Dan Bingham has an incredible sense of family, community, and quite simply, the desire to make the world around him a better place. He does not do this for accolades or to be in the spotlight. His staff and faculty felt that he truly deserved this award and were extremely proud and excited to see him receive the honors.

A favorite quote of Leslie’s Hallmark owner, Dave Simkins, goes like this: “Small business is not for the faint of heart. It’s for the brave, the patient, and the persistent. It is for the overcomer!”

This is certainly a great description for most small business owners and most definitely for this year’s award winner.

Leslie’s Hallmark came about as a purchase of Hatch’s Card and Gifts in 1979 by Dave’s parents, Les and Kim Simkins at the prodding of Dave! (Dave was employed by Hatch’s) In 1980, Hatch’s became Leslie’s Hallmark and in 1983, they purchased Knight’s Hallmark. Located in the Arcade building on the Gulch, it later moved to the old Fligelman Building next to the Parrot Confectionery. In 1984, they purchased Tiffany’s Attic in Great Falls, adding their second store to the business. Later they acquired Whipples Hallmark in Holiday Village Mall. These stores in Great Falls were combined to form

the largest Hallmark store in Montana. In 1989, Simkins Inc. added Robins and the Jays Hallmark in Bozeman. They purchased Andrews Hallmark in 2002 and combined stores in the Gallatin Valley Mall. In 2003, Leslie’s opened a second location in Helena in the

Northside Center near Target. Seeing a need in Helena, Dave also opened a Montana Shop in 2011 in the mall. In 2012, Dave opened a new Hallmark shop in the Rim Rock Mall in Billings. Leslie’s has earned many awards for excellence over the years and have qualified for the “Gold Crown” status every year since 1980 with Hallmark. Dave has been very aggressive at keeping the stores technologically advanced and keeping up with Hallmark’s décor requirements. Dave’s staff members are very supportive and most have a very long length of employment. He treats them all like family and they appreciate the flexibility he gives them citing “family first”. Customer service is the most important part of Leslie’s and they have built a reputation of excellence at all stores. Leslie’s has always been a family store and has involved sons, daughters, and grandchildren. Dave has been supportive of and involved in many community activities and events. He has the distinction of being the youngest Board Chairman ever for the Chamber, serving in that capacity when he was only 28 years old! He has also served on the Westmont board and worked diligently on the Capitol Restoration Project with Betty Babcock. The Leslie’s Hallmark stores are known to sell tickets to community events (MANY events) for no gain, only to help the organizations succeed. Dave and his wife Colleen (and the entire Simkins family) feel very blessed to do business in and live in a community like Helena.

2014 George D. Anderson Business Person of the Year Over thirteen years ago, Jim Stanger came to Helena with the purchase of what is now Helena Motors. Helena Motors has seen great success with Jim’s leadership. After several years in Helena, Jim expanded his ownership to include Helena Auto Center. He employs over 120 people between the two entities. Both businesses have seen great success and growth in numbers of employees and numbers of sales. The service departments have also grown greatly under his leadership. Jim not only works hard to build these two businesses (representing 9 auto flags) but he also volunteers for organizations that

are part of the Helena community. Jim is a former board chair for the Helena Chamber. He also supports his staff in their volunteer efforts in the community. The flexible and family friendly atmosphere at the dealerships makes them an employer of choice. Jim incorporated support for the local schools into their advertising messaging and developed a student of the week program. In addition to helping the community in areas like youth activities, food share, and various other benefits and causes, Helena Motors and Helena Auto Center are also committed to helping Helenans drive safer and more reliable vehicles. Jim has also donated several autos over the years to special families in need.

Not only did he update their facilities to better serve Helena, they are also constantly training employees in the ever-changing automotive industry & the technology that comes with these changes. Held to the high standards of seven auto manufacturers, Helena Motors and Helena Auto Center both show flexibility in change and progress as well as commitment to uphold brand standards of their flags. With the success of any business comes growth in size which means more jobs. Jim is pleased to increase his employee base, creating several new positions in 2014, as well as new jobs over the previous few years. Jim and wife Suzi Stanger have volunteered their extra time to several organizations in Helena and always have an open door to their employees. They are supportive of the many employees who also choose to volunteer their time to community schools, clubs, youth sports and other organizations. It is this flexible and “family” atmosphere that makes Helena Motors and Helena Auto Center so successful.

Kelly Fleiner is one of the most energetic and enthusiastic volunteers we have! She never seems to have a bad day and is not afraid to take on the heavy tasks such as leadership of a committee or working at an event. Kelly is actually a former employee of the chamber, is a current co-chair of the banquet committee, is a member of the golf tournament

committee, and is the new vice-chair of the Young Professionals. We are so lucky that she has followed in her mother’s footsteps as a model citizen volunteer - She sees the advantages and benefits of volunteering.

Liz Bangerter is a natural hostess and greeter to visitors from all over the world. Her summer job allows her to dress in striped coveralls and wear a conductor’s hat. She loves telling Helena’s story to hundreds if not thousands of visitors who ride the tour train. Liz also works tirelessly behind the scenes to haul heavy boxes of maps, guides, and

brochures to the Chamber’s airport visitor center, keeping it well stocked for incoming Helena visitors. The airport visitor center is the biggest outlet for our publications out of our three visitor centers. Liz is one of the most selfless people you will ever meet, a former state legislator, an amazing Helena ambassador, and a great friend to the Helena Chamber.

➧ Orchestrated and completed a feasibility study for a new Visitor/Interpretive Center with Faucher Enterprises. With positive results, we moved forward with the Visioning process for the building. With a site chosen, we did a RFQ and selected SMA Architects from a very highly qualified field of member architect firms. We completed a several month process of determining what the purpose, uses, and potential components could be for this center and now have a complete vision portfolio with schematic drawings for what can be an outstanding new addition to Helena’s hospitality efforts. SWISH Tourney – over 80 teams – economic impact of $½-3/4 million to Helena’s economy Visitor Centers at WalMart, Helena Airport, and Chamber office distributed about 10,000 maps and guides over the year, plus the Convention and Visitor Bureau mailed out nearly 20,000 guides. Volunteers and paid staff at the Chamber and VIC (WalMart) combined to greet nearly 10,000 visitors over the year. Several thousand guides were sent out to persons interested in relocating to Helena.

Leadership Helena graduated its 31st class of 32 participants who completed 9 months of classes, tours, and

education. Young Professionals had a very successful year of new programs, events, and have a growing membership of over 150 young business people. New this year was a monthly newsletter and expanded Facebook page by new staff liaison Anna Strange.

Many workshops were held for our members including an Entrepreneur with SCORE, non-profit directors training with Big Sky Non-Profits, customer service and more.

TOURISM: The Chamber’s Convention and Visitor Bureau had a very busy year promoting Helena to visitors and tourists. ➧ The CVB hosted 4 travel writers in July and has already received some great press from articles written about Helena in both regional and national publications. ➧ The CVB also did a trip giveaway this year which drove people to our helenamt.com web site where a lucky family was chosen to spend 4 days in Helena with all expenses paid. This promotion drove nearly 4,000 new visitors to the web site. ➧ The CVB continued to promote Helena by placing ads in national publications such as Better Homes and Gardens, Sunset Magazine and National Geographic Traveler just to name a few. From these publications, the CVB receives requests from readers to send them more information about Helena. Nearly 15,000 requests were received this year from these publications and each one of them was sent a copy of our Vacation Guide. ➧ The CVB also worked with the Chamber to see that

Page 23: 2015 - TownNews

adequate staffing of our local visitors center at WalMart was provided, as well as placing two new 40” TVs at the airport Visitors Center that run different videos promoting the many wonders of our Capital City to those utilizing the airport visitor center hosted by the Chamber/CVB.

PUBLICATIONS/PROMOTION: ➧ Produced the Vacation/Relocation guide, Helena street map, B2B (2-3 issues) magazine, Report to the Community. ➧ With KTVH – produced (recorded) 52 weeks of Chamber Spotlights interviewing members of the chamber. 2014 ADVOCACY: ➧ Continued our e-Advocate reporting with the City of Helena Commission Reports going out to members within 2 days of those meetings. ➧ Successfully lobbied for tax abatements for Boeing Helena and Pioneer Aerostructures. ➧ Again met with and joined the Coalition of Chambers with over 30 positions we will jointly lobby on at the 2015 Legislative Session which collectively represents nearly 5500 businesses in Montana’s urban centers. The Government Affairs committee has worked diligently to update and ready our own Helena Area Chamber of Commerce Position Papers for the 2015 Legislative Session. At past sessions we have lobbied on over 100 bills per session. Lunch with Local Government - 2X/year – were very successful this year with a move to holding them at hotels with a hot meal. Up to 70 members per event take advantage of this opportunity to hear from and discuss issues with our local elected officials and their Administrators.

EVENT SUCCESS: Our member events were all supported at higher levels than ever before: ➧ Annual Awards Luncheon - 340 attended ➧ Annual Banquet - 820 attended ➧ Golf Tourney - 33 teams ➧ Plus 14 successful Business After Hours Events and 5 Business Before Hours Events.

PROGRAMS: ➧ Leadership Helena - Graduated 32 class members in May and quickly filled with 32 people in the 2014-2015 class. Participants completed 9 months of classes, tours, and education. This program continues to shine for the Chamber. ➧ Young Professionals - We now have over 150 people as members of this growing and vibrant group. The steering committee worked hard to provide at least one (sometimes 2) events/meetings/ activities for the YP’s every month. From professional development, life skills, networking and more, to fun gatherings like the Halloween Haunted Helena event at the Montana Club. New this year was a monthly newsletter and newly improved Facebook page.

ALSO: Cathy continues to serve on the board for the national chamber association American Chamber of Commerce Executives, this past year as chair of their Audit Committee. She was honored at the national convention with the Chairman’s Special Recognition Award in August of 2014.

Helena Chambers Young Professionals Come Join Us

The Helena Chamber Young Professionals (YP’s)

were created in 2009 for the purpose of

getting young working individuals

in the Helena community

involved with the Chamber as

well as providing them with

networking opportunities.

The Young Professional

steering committee

meets monthly to create

events which support their

mission of engaging young

professionals through professional

development, networking, and civic

participation and involvement.

In 2014, to give back to the community, the YP’s

volunteered their time at YMCA Camp Child, sponsoring

cabin updates, as well as sorted toys for Toys for Tots during

the holiday season. They hosted very successful social

gatherings including a ‘Brewers Night Out’ at Kindrick Field,

a casual 9-hole golf outing, and a ‘Haunted Helena’ Mixer in

the Rathskellar at The Montana Club, complete with ghost

stories by Ellen Baumler. Additionally, the group hosted

career building events such as a ‘Young Entrepreneurs of

Helena’ event, a lunch focused on stress management

and workplace burnout, and a progressive

dinner tour of businesses in the Great

Northern Town Center, where

they enjoyed presentations

from Linda Kindrick with

Montana Community

Finance, Suzanne Severin

with Anderson ZurMuehlen,

and Dan Trost with DA

Davidson & Co.

If you are between the ages of 21

and 45, the Helena Chamber invites you to join the

Young Professionals! If you are looking to recruit younger

employees to Helena, this group provides the means for

employees to connect with others their age, creating a

strong community network. If your business is looking for a

great way to develop your young talent, please call Anna

Strange at the Chamber at 442-4120.

Inexpensive Benefits! SWISH Tournament Celebrates 20 Years

of Competition The Chamber website is visited by thousands of people

each month, both by local individuals and people looking

to visit or relocate. Because of this the Chamber has

created two interesting new benefits for its members, Job

Postings and Hot Deals.

➧ The Job Postings section of the website is a simple,

effective and affordable means to acquire new talent for

your business. Your employees are your life-blood, and

this tool will allow you to tap into a huge talent pool with

the very affordable cost of $50 per six week listing.

➧ For business looking to attract more patrons or

promote a deal currently being offered, Hot Deals are a

great, inexpensive way to reach the masses. For $25 your

deal can be shared with the entire Chamber membership

as well as every visitor to the chamber website.

In addition to being present on the website, these deals are

also featured in the Chamber’s bi-weekly email update. To

find out more about these offerings call the Chamber at

442-4120.

The Chamber is recognized for hosting one of the longest running youth basketball tournaments in the state as the SWISH Basketball Tournament Celebrates 20 consecutive years of great competition. Over the years, the SWISH tournament has been known for its high level of competition and for allowing kids the opportunity to play in a safe, competitive environment. Last year the SWISH included a 3 point shooting contest and featured Carroll College Football Coach Mike Van Diest as key note speaker. The six time National Championship Football Coach talked to the youth about overcoming adversity, what it takes to be a winner and the importance of commitment and practice. The event drew nearly 300 participants who all got to take part in the 3 point shootout. This year the SWISH will also be a part of the Tournament of Champions (TOC) and the Chamber will host the annual event on March 7th and 8th, 2015. The tournament is open for all 5th – 8th grade boys and girls and will welcome teams from all across the state. Registration forms are available on the Chambers web site at helenachamber.com and also on the Universal Athletics Youth Calendar web site at universalathletics.com. 34 n 2015 Report To The Community n Helena Chamber Of Commerce

The Chambers Leadership Helena Program has

been in existence for 33 years. Each year the Cham-

ber recruits employees from member businesses to

participate in the class and it is estimated that nearly

1,000 Helenans have successfully completed the

program. These individuals have graduated from the

program with new or re-developed leadership skills

that help them not only in the business world, but

also in their personal and family lives.

Leadership

Helena is

designed

to develop

informed,

skilled,

vigorous

and effective business leaders through a course of

leadership development, networking, and chamber

and community involvement. By providing leader-

ship development and community involvement, the

program is successful at giving participants the tools

necessary to question standard practices, encourage

new visions, empower themselves and others to act,

and to make a difference in the community.

The chamber is honored to have the leadership

training portion of the program facilitated by Dev

Warren of Anderson Zurmuehlen’s Upstream Acad-

emy. Some of the topics covered during this training

include Time Management, Personal Discipline and

Great Leadership, Dealing with Underperformers

and Playing to Strengths while Minimizing Weak-

nesses. This training allows the participants to

openly discuss the qualities and traits of leaders and

how they can incorporate these aspects of leadership

into their own business and personal lives.

The Chamber would like to thank Chairman

Dean Mack of the Student Assistance Foundation

for his time and dedication to the program. We

would also like to thank the Helena community and

in particular the many businesses that support this

wonderful program. It is because of this great part-

nership that the Leadership Helena program contin-

ues to thrive. The Chamber continues to work hard

to make Leadership Helena the premier leadership

program in the state.

Montana painter, Dale Livezey, has been a professional working artist for over thirty

years and is known for his evocatively understated landscapes that contrast the richness

of light and shadow against the austere beauty of the land. His paintings are landscapes

of light and emptiness, the daily seduction between the land and sky, dramatically

serene. Working in oil, Livezey brings a new aesthetic sensibility to his paintings, in

which the artist disappears into the viewer’s deepened ability to see. We all come away

from personal experiences in the outdoors with photographs that upon later viewing are

somehow lacking in representation of the true experience. Livezey paints to capture a

more whole experience of a landscape, with its emotional and spiritual breadth intact.

Dale Livezey began his focused study of the Montana landscape in 1978 when, at the

age of 20, he left behind the Ohio farm country where he was raised. Working strictly

in oils, he has enjoyed a loyal and enthusiastic following throughout the region. Several

of Livezey’s images have been used for book covers, including The Big Sky by A. B.

Guthrie and The New Montana Story: an Anthology edited by Rick Newby. Livezey is

represented by

A.L. Swanson Gallery in Helena, MT and Stremmel Gallery in Reno, NV. Find more of

his work on the web at www.dalelivezey.com
