SPRING 2015

Page 2: 2015 Spring Catalog

There’s something within all of us crying out for adventure. We hear it when we stare out a window at work, flip through the pages of a magazine, or when we’re lost in our imagination.

That cry for adventure drives us forward. Inhibition be damned as we chase the sun as it rises, giving up only after it sets into night. We’re driven to create moments.

MOMENTS THAT ARE MEMORABLE. MOMENTS THAT ARE VIBRANT. MOMENTS THAT INSPIRE.

We are empowered and we seek to empower others around us. Adventure and exploration by nature are not selfish, and those who answer the call will invariably broaden their views and increase their capacity for empathy.

This, the unbound passion to explore, help, and create, is the meaning of it all. This is who we are.

This is the solar life.

THE SOLAR LIFE.

6 SOLAR PANEL SCIENCE

We took solar power from stationary to portable, from rooftops to backpacks. Powering your phone, headlamp, camera or whatever essential gear is in your kit from the sun is a reality. It’s a little surreal, opening a solar panel, plugging in a phone, and watching as it starts to charge...

The science behind solar is powerfully interesting:

The Solar Power HouseNuclear fusion at the sun’s core creates energy, released in the form of light. The sun’s light takes an 8½ minute trip to the earth – even though we’re 93 million miles apart.

THE GUIDE TO GATHERINGSUN POWER

SOLAR PANEL SCIENCE

2.8 million exajoules of energy

rain down from the sun every year

compared to the 551 exajoules of all other

forms of energy.

Page 9: 2015 Spring Catalog

goalzero.com 7

Solar Panels Absorb the Sun’s EnergyThink of it like solar billiards. Visible and invisible light from the sun hits the top-layer electrons like a cue ball, and gives them the push they need to break loose and race toward the bottom layer, creating a current as they move.

Herding the Electron FlowPathways created in the solar panels harness moving electrons, acting like a waterslide and forcing the energy where you want it.

Plugging InAn open solar panel is generating quite a bit of energy; the key is to harness that power and put it to good use. Placing a battery in the middle of the electron waterslide allows you to collect and store energy – which charges your battery.

Solar Panels = Electron PlaygroundsSolar panels contain two layers of carefully grown silicon slices with a uniform pathway in between. Energetic electrons in the negatively charged top layer are itching to jump to the positively charged bottom; all they need is a little push in the right direction.

The top level of silicon is mixed with

phosphorus, creating the negative charge. The bottom

level is mixed with boron, creating the positive

charge.

GZ solar panels are constructed of

monocrystalline, which has the highest

efficiency rating . of 17-18%. Monocrystalline panels

have a longer life-span than other types of solar. GZ Nomad panels have a 5-7 year life span;

Boulder panels a 20-year life span.

HARNESS THE SUN. POWER YOUR LIFE. Power should fit your adventure, not the other way around. Whether you’re backpacking across the Rockies or hunkering down for the season, we have a panel to fit your needs. All of our panels are built with highly-efficient monocrystalline technology, featuring an intelligent charging junction box. Whether you choose a foldable Nomad panel for backpacking trips, or a rigid Boulder panel for an installation is up to you.

EMPOWERING PASSIONI sort of have a double life. One is a life of expeditions and exploration.

I have completed over 50 expeditions, which have spanned all seven continents and to some of the most remote places on the planet - all in pursuit of a passion for first ascents and exploration. I live to experience the magic, power and beauty of the wild planet that few will rarely see, and to inspire them to get out and live their dreams.

Then there’s another side. When I’m home, I’m a dedicated full-time dad to my beautiful, sweet daughter Lilliana.

She has grown up seeing the photos, the videos, and hearing the stories from all of these expeditions - now she’s dreaming of far off places. She wants to get out and travel, to see the world and experience the magic, power and beauty for herself.

To me, there is no better education or experience than to get out and travel the world. Empowering Lilliana to live her dreams and follow her passion is my top priority, and I’ll be right beside her as she takes on the world, one step at a time.

EN ROUTE: THE SOLAR VAN LIFETraveling to remote locations, hanging from a 500-foot bridge, and staying up all night just to get a shot are all a regular part of Travis Burke’s adventure-photographer lifestyle. His next adventure is exploring North America nomad style – living out of his van and all that comes with it.

As an outdoor adventure photographer, having a mobile office is just kind of a no brainer. It opens up so many opportunities and makes it easy to be available at the drop of a hat. I specifically built this van to help me explore as much of North America as possible during my one-year venture.

As far as ‘actually’ living the van life, no it’s not always as glamorous as Instagram feeds make it seem. Showers can be few and far between, living spaces are tight, and loved ones are distant. The payoff is getting to meet incredible humans from all walks of life, standing among breathtaking landscapes, and participating in activities that I’ll remember and be proud of for the rest of my life.

I’ve worked hard to be in the position where I am not tied down and can just cruise, so I’m really trying to take full advantage of that. North America especially interests me because so many people feel like they have to travel overseas to experience life, when in reality we are pretty spoiled with what we have here. I really want to use my passion to bring awareness to that and encourage others to get out and explore. Just because something is only three hours from your driveway doesn’t mean it’s not traveling.

Just get out there. Go do it and live in that moment.

In the heart of the Navajo Nationfamilies struggle as they live without power.

Page 25: 2015 Spring Catalog

goalzero.com 23

The Navajo Nation is a place full of diverse landscapes, tradition and beauty. Roughly 250,000 people call this “domestically dependent” sovereign nation home. Unfortunately many of its inhabitants lack simple amenities like running water, power and lights; over 18,000 homes are without power.

We saw an opportunity to partner with Eagle Energy’s ongoing project to provide power and light to the inhabitants of the Navajo Nation. With the help of Clif Bar, The North Face and the Honnold Foundation we were able to provide safe and reliable power solutions to those in need. Our team was invited into the homes of some amazing individuals to install solar systems. One of the recipients, Helen Salazar, has been a life-long resident of Monument Valley. “The most rewarding part of the trip was to see Helen’s reaction when she saw the lights turn on in her Hogan for the first time,” said Jonathan Munk, Goal Zero VP of Marketing. “Then to see her sit down and begin working on a blanket was amazing. The hogan was full of people and different conversations, but when she started working it got quiet and everyone turned to watch. It felt as if we all got a chance to honor that tradition and see it for the first time.” Wilbert Yazzi, another Monument Valley citizen and recipient commented, “We have about 50 generators out in the trash dump. I go through generators every year, I can’t keep up with them. I have wanted a solar panel. I needed something like that.” Each person we came in contact with shared something beautiful and unique from their culture and their lives. We are proud to have been able to bring power and light into the homes of Wilbert, Helen and others. We hope these systems make their lives easier.

“ The positive effects of adding solar to the community were immediate. No more running a truck for two hours to charge a phone. No more breathing fumes from lanterns to see at night.” - DAVID ROSNER, GOAL ZERO INSTALLATION & PRODUCT MANAGER

As Goal Zero employees we count ourselves lucky to work on products that empower people. We also know how important it is to step away from the office. Whether it’s an evening laughing with friends around a campfire or a limit-testing expedition across the globe, we believe in getting outside and enjoying life.

FROM PHOTO SAFARI TO MOUNT KILIMANJARO Visiting Africa had always been a dream, but one which always seemed out of reach enough that it remained firmly in the “someday” category. It wasn’t until last year that we finally posed the question: if not now, when? It was truly the trip of a lifetime.

INSPIRED BY CURIOSITY There is no greater feeling than seeing a beautiful mountain sunset after an uplifting conversation with my wife. We are teaching our son about the secret mood boosters of the mountains. -ALEX

GETTING JAMESON OUTSIDEBeing outside is key to a healthy life. I grew up going on family camping nights, scout camps and just playing outside. With life moving so fast these days it’s easy to forgot that just a few minutes away there is calmness and beauty. It’s kind of like a cleanse, being outside in nature. - JAMES

KEEPING GOOD COMPANYI am always searching for the next adventure and a good companion to share it with. Willow and I love spending our time together outdoors.

We looked down an alley lined with timeless homes accented by multi-colored shutters, cobblestones, and Italian chatter. A cool breeze pushed its way down the street causing the drying clothes in every window to wave. At the end of the alley stood the 2000 year old Pantheon; we were in Rome, someplace I never thought I would go.

This wasn’t the beginning of our journey, but it was definitely when it hit me that we were living out the adventure of a lifetime.

When talking about Goal Zero powered adventures, a month long trek in Europe seems really mild, but for me and my wife, it was always on our bucket list. We ended up visiting 8 different countries, seeing things I had only ever imagined seeing.

We watched the sunset from the top of the Eifel Tower, stayed in a chateau built before Columbus sailed the ocean blue, saw the greatest pieces of art in the world and strengthened our friendship. I wouldn’t trade anything in the world for the trip and the experiences we had.

So here’s what you should do: Call your best friend, book the flight, and don’t look back. You’ll never tell your grandkids, “Man I’m glad I didn’t risk losing my job, spending my savings, and just sat kicking it right here in this cubicle.”

You’ll look back with zero regrets and a million stories to tell, and to me that’s what life is all about.

PHILIPPINES: AFTER THE STORMLate last year Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded, fell on the unprepared residents of the Philippines. They were subjected to torrential rains, sustained winds up to 195 mph, and devastating storm surges. Homes were obliterated, entire families were lost and more than 6,000 people perished.

Goal Zero, along with Barebones and Tifie Humanitarian, sent a team and supplies to Ormoc and Tacloban to rebuild a school and erect 50+ semi-permanent homes, complete with power and gardening equipment.

“The biggest need right now is for semi-permanent housing,” said Robert Workman, Goal Zero Founder and CEO. “The need drives what we can do. What we can do is take a family, put them into a new home with electricity and a vegetable garden, on their own piece of land that’s been deeded to them by a local plantation owner. That’s pretty darn cool.”

Things in the Philippines are improving; however, much of the country is still in ruin. People are still struggling to piece their lives back together and get back on their feet. Tarps, tents, beached ships, buildings near collapse, and all manners of makeshift shelters are what most call home. Our goal was to change that for a few. This trip wasn’t our first, and it won’t be our last.

RebuildingFrom empty donated land, families helped build their own homes – embracing the process so quickly, many moved in before they were even finished. Each family began leveling floors, building patios and turning their tents into homes.

Page 33: 2015 Spring Catalog

Schoolhouse Power Restored The school in Ormoc was destroyed. The roof was gone, three of the

four walls came down and all supplies were a total loss. Things were patched up, but the resources to get things back to normal weren’t there. In this area of the Philippines, all teaching materials are online. We set out to not only repair the school, but to supply them with the tools they needed to get back on their feet.

“ When we came with laptops and internet access they all started to cry. One of the teachers told me, ‘We can now be 21st century teachers.’ They downloaded their materials that night and on our last day, we were invited to visit and see how the laptops and improved facilities were helping. It was a great lesson and we could see and feel the love that these teachers have for their students.”

- REBECCA LITCHFIELD, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Universal Truths“ While in the Philippines you see people who are happy. They are happy even

though they lost so much. They laugh, play basketball, do what they need to do to survive and then go home to a tarp tied to a tree. Can we make a difference? Yes. We do what we can, and that’s where it starts.”
