I recommend “Two Ostinatos for Lent by Nicholas Palmer” (005769, e05769, $1.40) During WLP’s Sing the Seasons choral reading sessions held throughout the country in 2014, musicians in attendance were drawn into the beauty of the second of these two ostinatos, Adoramus Te, Christe. Easily learned by the choir, both ostinatos refrains can be

used throughout the Lenten Season. I particularly like what the composer did with the choral harmonization for the verses in Adoramus Te, Christe. He gives the option of either continuing the ostinato refrain as the cantor sings the verses or humming a different harmonization he composed to be sung under the verses. The harmonic structure here is haunting and quite satisfying. I also want to draw your attention to Purified and Enlightened: RCIA Sessions for Lent by Mary Birmingham (017175, $39.95) Mary has brought her more than thirty years’ parish experience of the RCIA to bear with this must-have resource for RCIA ministers for the Lenten Season. As the editor of this book, I found Mary’s insights and solid approach to adult spiritual formation to be both helpful and insightful. the michael Joncas Psalter: Volume 2 Advent and christmas Psalms

This second volume in the series includes Lectionary responsorial psalms for Sundays and Holy Days from the First Sunday of Advent through the Baptism of the Lord. Renowned composer and liturgical scholar Jan Michael Joncas has devised a form allowing for a spacious and meditative way of praying the psalms. An extended melodious refrain is sung by the assembly with four-part harmony by the choir as accompaniment. This same harmony is then vocalized by the choir under verses sung by a cantor. No instrumental accompaniment is necessary. This purely vocal performance creates a special ambience for the community praying the psalms in this way. A keyboard reduction of the music is provided for rehearsal and situations where instrumental backup might be desired, or for masses where choral performance is not possible. New to this volume are optional shorter versions of the refrains, for occasions where they might be preferred.

The J. Michael Joncas Psalter: Volume 2 is a resource for communities that take the psalms seriously and want to elevate the understanding of them with a spacious and beautiful musical setting. Volumes to complete the liturgical year are in preparation.

Una hermosa estrella guió a los magos a Jesús. Hay varias personas brillantes y hermosas que nos guían a Jesús. ¿Puedes recordar a alguien que en tu vida te indicara el camino para Jesús, ya sea que haya dicho o hecho algo? ¿Qué podrías decirle para agradecerle?
