UBC Point Grey campus offers the University community an extraordinary experience for youth to be active and participate in sport. Choose from rowing, hockey, swimming, tennis, and many other activities. Residents of the University Neighbourhoods Association and UTOWN are encouraged to take part in many of these programs and facilities through discounted rates.

RED CROSS PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONSSTARFISHLEVEL 1

An introductory class for babies and their parent or caregiver. Allows babies to experience buoyancy, movement, entries and songs and play in the water (caregiver required).

DUCKLEVEL 2

For toddlers or older babies with a parent of caregiver. Toddlers build confidence while enjoying the water through games, songs and active water play (caregiver required).

SEA TURTLE LEVEL 3

For preschoolers and their parents. Develops skills in swimming, glides and floating and builds awareness of deep water and safe entries (caregiver required).

SEA OTTER LEVEL 4

First level for new swimmers who can spend 30min without their caregivers. Swimmers work on front and back floats and glides, kicking on front with buoyant object and will be able to swim 1 meter upon completion of this level.

SALAMANDER LEVEL 5

Preschoolers actively learn new swimming skills including assisted floats and glides through games and songs. The fun includes learning to jump into chest deep water.

SUNFISH LEVEL 6

Preschoolers work on stroke and skills progressions. Leaning also focuses on good judgment in, on and around the water, and entries and floats in deep water.

CROCODILELEVEL 7

Preschoolers start independent glides and kicking in deep water. Endurance is built through increasing distance for front and back swims. Swimmers learn about the dolphin kick and try synchro skills in the water.

WHALELEVEL 8

Children will learn to swim independently and participate in team games. Preschoolers will increase their distance and improve skills in front and back swims. Swimmers also learn about throwing assists to help another person in the water.

SWIM KIDS 2 Swimmers learn front and back glide with flutter kick, develop front swim, complete deep-water activities (assisted), and swim 10 metres continuously.

SWIM KIDS 3 Swimmers increase their distance on front and back glide with flutter kick, perform flutter kick unassisted, wear a PFD in deep water, float in deep water, and swim 15 metres.

SWIM KIDS 4 Swimmers learn back swim with shoulder roll and front crawl (10m), work on flutter kick on back, perform kneeling dive, introduction to sculling, and swim 25 metres continuously.

SWIM KIDS 5 Swimmers develop front crawl (15m), learn back crawl (15m) and whip kick on back, learn stride dive and treading water, perform head-first sculling on back, and swim 50 metres continuously.

SWIM KIDS 6 Swimmers increase distance on front and back crawl (25m), learn elementary backstroke (15m), learn dolphin kick, tread water in deep water, perform front dive, and swim 75 metres continuously.

SWIM KIDS 7 Swimmers increase distance on front and back crawl (50m) and elementary backstroke (25m), learn front scull, perform whip kick on front and dolphin kick, learn stride entry, and swim 150 metres continuously.

SWIM KIDS 8 Swimmers increase distance on front and back crawl (75m) and elementary backstroke (25m), learn breaststroke (15m), learn eggbeater / tread water, perform feet-first surface dive and standing shallow dive, and swim 300 metres continuously.

SWIM KIDS 9 Swimmers increase distance on front and back crawl (100m), elementary backstroke (50m) and breaststroke (25m), learn sidestroke kick, perform head-first surface dive, and swim 400 metres continuously.

LEARN TO SKATE LESSONSA fun approach to learning to skate, designed for children with limited or no experience. We will focus on familiarizing your child with the ice and arena environment. Standing along and balance are the basic essentials for your child to progress in a positive way on the ice. Skates, helmet (with chin strap), pants, jacket, and mittens are required. When registering, you will be prompted to select a “Level” which is closest to your child’s ability.

LEVEL 1 Participants have no on-ice experience or cannot stand unassisted. This program will develop balance and posture, as well as introduce forward skating, gliding, and stopping.

LEVEL 2 Participants must have passed level 1 or be able to stand and walk on the ice unassisted. This program will develop forward skating and stopping. Gliding on one foot and backward skating will be introduced.

LEVEL 3 Participants must have completed level 2 or be able to sakte with strides the width of the ice. This level focuses on gliding on one foot and backward skating. Forward crossovers and backwards gliding will be introduced.

LEVEL 4 Skaters must have completed level 3 or be able to glide on one foot (3 secondes) and skate backwards. This program will develop forward crossovers and backwards gliding.

LEVEL 5 Skaters must have completed level 4 or be able to perform forward crossovers and backwards gliding. Backward crossovers and backward stopping are the focus of this course, while edge control, mohawk turns, and parallel stopping will be introduced.

ICE MICE - BEGINNER (AGES 4 - 6 YEARS)A program is designed for kids playing hockey for the first time. From holding a hockey stick to learning how to put on full equipment, this program will provide a fun introduction. Previous skating skill in Level 5 Learn to Skate or equivalent required.




ICE MICE - PLUS (AGES 4 - 6 YEARS)This program will build on all the fundamentals from our Ice Mice (Beginner). Aiming to provide confidence for your child playing minor hockey. Previous skating experience from our Ice Mice (Beginner) is required or an equivalent other program.

This guide lists all UBC Camps spring and summer programs. Use this guide in conjunction with the UBC Camps brochure (found in the centrefold of this publication) to find the courses that best suit your child’s interests and schedule. When you are ready to register, just use the Course ID next to each activity to quickly find the program and expedite the registration process.

Most UBC Camps are either a morning, or an afternoon program. You can custom-build a full day of camps for your child, by choosing a morning and afternoon program, and adding Lunch Supervision. If early drop-off and late pick-up are needed, Before Care and After Care services are also available. For more information see page 21 of the UBC Recreation Youth Guide.

BUILD YOUR WEEK

LOCATIONS: UBC Camps programming occurs at the UBC Point Grey campus and in the surrounding community. The location of each camp is listed below the program description. All programming facilities and locations at UBC, have been identified on the map attached to the rear of this publication. UBC Camps programming also includes off-site locations at: Douglas Park, Trimble Park, Jericho Sailing Centre, the UBC Golf Course, and the UBC Boathouse. ONLINE: Online registration will begin March 2, 2015. Please visit www.camps.ubc.ca to find the appropriate course, then follow the “Register” link to our secure online registration portal. A Visa or Mastercard and a valid email address is required for all online registrations.

If you already know the program that you wish to register for, on our secure registration portal, you can also use the Course ID to find classes.

BEFORE CARE (AGES 5 - 16 YEARS)The additional care services offer families more flexibility in dropping off and picking up children at UBC. During this time children will take part in supervised mini activities. Not available with the following camps: Golf, Speed and Power, Sailing, Skimboarding, Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Watersports, Windsurfing, Beach Volleyball and Douglas Park Soccer School. AFTER CARE (AGES 5 - 16 YEARS)The additional care services offer families more flexibility in dropping off and picking up children at UBC. During this time children will take part in supervised mini activities. Not available with the following camps: Golf, Speed and Power, Sailing, Skimboarding, Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Watersports, Windsurfing, Beach Volleyball and Douglas Park Soccer School. ROPES COURSEADVENTURE PLAY FOR YOUTH (AGES 15 - 17 YEARS) The focus is on developing leadership and team building skills while learning how to work with kids, tie knots, climb safely, and so much more. No experience required. Training will include facilitation skills and hands-on learning at the UBC Ropes Course. During this program, we will offer you an internship program where you will be able to apply what you have learned with a group of boys and girls participating in our summer camps.

MARCHING BAND CAMP (AGES 10 - 17 YEARS)At this camp, students will have an opportunity to learn new styles of music typically found in traditional marching bands. A morning session will be spent learning warm-ups and show music. Then, students will take to the field in the afternoon to coordinate that music with a marching routine. It is sure to be an exciting experience, learning to coordinate playing and marching, all while working on technique, reading abilities, and showmanship. First week will be for junior high students with the 2nd week progressing in difficulty for senior high students.

BEACH KIDS (AGES 5 - 7 YEARS)Beach Kids is a program aimed at children 5-7 years of age who want to learn about sailing and water safety. The goal of this program is to get children comfortable around boats and the water before they go into the Sail Optis program. Although participants will learn some basic sailing concepts, children will not be able to sail on their own at the completion of this course. SAIL OPTIS (AGES 7 - 10 YEARS)These courses are for beginner & intermediate sailors aged 7-10 years old. Using the world famous optimist dinghy, this course introduces participants to the basics of sailing while maintaining a fun and safe atmosphere. In level 1 students share a boat with another student and can expect to learn how to rig and de-rig the boats, capsize and recover, understand the wind, handle a boat, tack (turn) and tie knots. Level 2 courses provide sailors with an opportunity to sail by themselves and develop additional sailing skills over a broader wind range. Level 3 helps sailors refine their sailing techniques and introduces them to racing. (Level 1 is a pre-requisite for Level 2, and 2 for 3).

SAIL ESCAPES (LEVEL 1/2/3) (AGES 10 - 14 YEARS)These courses are for beginner & intermediate sailors aged 10-14 years old. Using escape dinghies, this course introduces participants to the basics of sailing while maintaining a fun and safe atmosphere. SPRING SPEED & POWER SCHOOL (AGES 8 - 12 YEARS)The core of this program is focused on developing the 3 pillars of athleticism: Speed, Power, and Agility. This program offers the aspiring athlete the type of individualized attention and instruction generally reserved for university or professional athletes. Committed athletes will learn how to: sprint faster, accelerate more explosively, jump higher and farther, change direction quicker, decelerate under control, breathe properly, and avoid injury during hard fitness sessions. All athletes will be given take home drills to work on flexibility and core strength specific to their body type. Structure: Athletes can sign up for 1 or 2 sessions per week, for a total of 8 weeks. At the time of registration, participants will be asked to choose which day(s) they will be attending. Please note: highly developed and motivated 13 year olds may sign up for the 14-19 year old group. ADAM’S LATEST COACHING TRAININGAdam latest education took him to Arizona where he spent 4 months training with the world’s most respected sports training facility, Athletes’ Performance Inc. This is the company responsible for the training of the German National Soccer team, the US National Soccer Team, the LA Galaxy, and countless NFL and MLB players. During Adam’s time there he had the opportunity to work side by side with some of the world’s most explosive professional athletes. Specifically football players preparing for the NFL combine. Adam also had the chance to do work with professional MLS soccer players getting ready for their seasons. Adam is now going to fuse the training he learned working with the pros to deliver the most technologically advanced speed programs ever offered to the young athletes of British Columbia.

WEEKLY SPEED & POWER CAMP (AGES 8 - 16 YEARS)If you are looking for a way to improve your child’s athletic performance over the summer but are unable to commit to our 10-week Speed School then this camp is the next best thing. This program offers the aspiring athlete the type of individualized attention generally reserved for university level athletes. All participants will be introduced to techniques that will improve their speed, agility, and quickness. Over the course of the week the kids will have loads of fun using speed ladders, hurdles, and medicine balls. Each and every athlete will leave with an exciting new approach to bettering his or her athletic ability. Not eligible for extra care services.

SUMMER SPEED & POWER SCHOOL (AGES 8 YEARS - ADULT)This program is focused on sending you or your child into the fall season in the best shape of your life. The core of the program is devoted to developing the 3 pillars of athleticism: Speed, Power, and Agility. Aspiring athletes will receive detailed instruction on the complex biomechanics of sprinting, cutting and jumping. This type of instruction is generally reserved for professional teams. During the program all athletes will learn how to: sprint faster, accelerate more explosively, jump higher and farther, change direction quicker, decelerate under control, breathe properly, and avoid injury during hard fitness sessions. PROGRAM STRUCTURE: registered athletes will train at a frequency of 2 sessions per week for a total of 8 weeks(16 sessions). Athletes will choose either- Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. The program runs for 10 weeks so athletes are free to choose any 8 week period at 2 sessions per week to complete their 16 sessions. This flexible program has been designed for athletes wanting to train all summer but need a couple weeks off for vacation. Not eligible for extra care services.

WEEKLY SOCCER SPECIFIC SPEED & POWER CAMP (AGES 8 - 16 YEARS)These camps will incorporate all of the skills, speed drills, and finishing techniques Adam used with the highly successful UBC Soccer team who won the CIS national title in 2005 & 2007. This cutting edge camp will focus on the development of game speed with and without the soccer ball. The sessions will be split into speed work on and off the ball with an emphasis on explosive acceleration and precision shooting and goal scoring situations. FAMILY WATER SPORTS DAY (AGES 7 - ADULT YEARS)Enjoy a fun filled day at the beach with the family! Includes a sailing lesson and tour around English Bay aboard a 24 ft sailboat. After a short break enjoy paddle boarding/kayaking along beautiful Kits Beach. This program takes place at the Kitsilano Yacht Club over a 4hr period. WINDSURFING CAMP (AGES 12 - 17 YEARS)Windsurfing camps are recommended for youth 12 years or older, and/or weighing at least 80lbs (36kg). An active on the water rescue team is available during all lessons. Safety is the main priority at Windsure. Lessons include the use of a complete sailboard, wetsuit, and life-jacket.

YOGAYOGA AND THE OUTDOORS (AGES 8 - 12 YEARS)This camp exposes children to yoga poses, philosophy and relaxation techniques. Body/mind/heart benefits of Hatha yoga will be integrated with traditional fun summer camp activities. Participants will also get the opportunity to explore the outdoors through walks and hikes around the UBC Campus.

COURSE & PROGRAM CANCELLATION POLICYUBC Recreation reserves the right to cancel any program due to low registration, unforeseen circumstances or conditions that make any such activity unsafe. Notice to participants will occur immediately after the registration/course cancellation deadline or where such a date is not available:

• Advanced Aquatics course updates, including cancellations, will be made a minimum of 3 business days in advance of program start dates.

• Youth program course updates, including cancellations, will be made a minimum of 5 business days in advance of program start dates.

REFUND POLICYFor individual-based program registration, a full refund or credit will be granted under the following conditions:• If the program is cancelled • If an individual withdraws from a program prior to:

• The registration/course cancellation deadline or• Where a registration/course cancellation deadline is not

available:• 5 business days prior to the start of youth

programming (view camps.ubc.ca for exceptions)• 1 week prior to the start of all advanced aquatics

programs

UBC RECREATION POLICIESREFUND POLICY (CONTINUED)Once the withdrawal deadline has passed, the following conditions apply:• In all other cases, participants will be required to complete a

refund request form. • Participants withdrawing for medical reasons must provide

medical documentation from a licensed physician. Notes must be received within one week of the date of illness or injury. Participants will receive a pro-rated refund for the remainder of the program.

All successful refund requests will be subject to a refund admin fee: • UBC Camps programs: $25.00• Programs < $50: $5.00• Programs $50 < $100: $10.00• Programs over > $100: $25.00• Refunds will be made in the same form as the payment

received• Course conflicts are not a valid reason for a refund and will

not be considered

UBC Student Rate PolicyTo be eligible for student rates and facility access, a student must:• Be registered in more than one UBC academic course in the

current term, having paid the Athletics and Recreation Fee• Produce a valid UBC student card

UBC STAFF/FACULTY RATE POLICYTo be eligible for staff/faculty rates and associated access, staff/faculty must:• Be a current employee of UBC• Provide a proof of staff/faculty status (eg. an-up-date UBC

Staff/Faculty Card)

COMMUNITY SERVICE CARD (CSC) & UNA RATE POLICYTo be eligible for CSC rates and facility access, residents must:• Produce a valid CSC or UNA Access Card to the facility staff

upon registration or rental • Only one discounted rate is available per card - each person

must present their own individual valid card to claim the discounted rate

METHODS OF PAYMENTUBC Recreation accepts Visa, MasterCard, Interac, UBC Journal Vouchers, and cash. Personal cheques are only accepted at the Boathouse. When paying online, only Visa and MasterCard are accepted.
