New, familiar faces fill offense, defense

By Greg FordSports Editor

[email protected]

It’s a mixed bag on offense for the 2015 Mustangs, who return plenty of firepower, but also have a lot of holes to fill.

Specifically, Sachse is loaded at the re-ceiver positions, where the likes of Devin Duvernay, Donovan Duvernay and Kam-eron Steen return; the former two, brothers, are Div. I prospects.

Also, the Mustangs will bring back a number of quality offensive linemen.

However, the backfield is a different sto-ry, as the Mustangs must replace both their quarterback and primary ball carrier.

“We’ve got a lot of experience coming back at receiver,” head coach Mark Behrens said. “We’re very senior-oriented. We’ve had some senior kids who’ve had the op-portunity to play for three years on the var-sity.”

He added, “Those guys are going to be very comfortable with what we’re doing, and they’ll have to be, because we’ll be young at quarterback.”

Besides the Duvernays and Steen, the Mustangs also should have Nate Shelton catching some passes, with sophomore Drew Jackson, junior Nick Alexander and senior Chris Hill also having a to see play-ing time.

The offensive line will feature the likes of returning All-District player Sam Weldon, along with Nate Thompson, Calder Mc-Carthy, Zach Lannerd, Grant Burrell (each was injured for part of 2014), Kevin Valdez, Hayden Park and Marcus Rodriguez.

There still is a question at quarterback, where sophomore Jalen Mayden, and Alex Williams, a junior, are battling for the start-ing slot. They’ll replace the graduated Brett Cox.

“Each one of them has some special things they do, and we’ll just wait and see how it pans out after (the scrimmages),” Behrens said.

Devin Duvernay also might see snaps in Sachse’s version of the Wildcat formation

“He’s a state 100-meter champ, and we’ve got to get him the ball,” Behrens said. “I think our quarterbacks can. Our offense is built around spreading it around and getting it to those guys.”

Things are a little more settled at running back, where junior Kelon Wilson steps in for Devine Ozigbo, who was the team’s pri-

mary runner the past three seasons.“Kelon is not quite as big, but what

Kelon does really well is that he’ll block,” Behrens said. “He’s been growing up where the blocking part was more important than the running. (Also), where Devine was more straight ahead and big, (Kelon) has a bit of shake in him.”

Another person who could see some car-ries is sophomore Christian Cole, who Beh-rens said “had a very good spring.”

DefenseSachse’s defense takes the field this sea-

son with many familiar faces and one new one: defensive coordinator Mitch Reed.

Under him, the Mustangs will try some new twists and turns along the line and in the secondary in order to slow down and stop enemy attacks.

“The kids are excited about it,” Behrens said. “We’ve got several seniors along the defensive line who are going to be leading the pack.”

Reed inherits a defense that surrendered 38.3 points per contest last season, but did record a shut out in a 55-0 walloping of North Garland. Overall, the Mustangs fin-ished 6-4 and missed the postseason.

Among those manning the front wall in 2015 will be Matt Yarbrough, Trevor Gra-ham, Keith Washington and Tony Krasniqi.

“He had a great year as a sophomore and has gotten bigger and thicker,” Behrens said of Krasniqi. “We’ll move him inside.”

Also, Behrens expects the likes of Chris Lee, Jose Rios and Quentin Brown to see playing time.

Behind that front four will be a lineback-ing corps featuring junior Riko Jeffers at middle linebacker, where the Mustangs ex-pect big things from him. Harrison Foerster and Jake Edwards also should be in the sec-ond line of defense, while the last line will have Jared Mayden and Devonte Emory at cornerback and Blake Shires at free safety.

“He had a good spring,” Behrens said of Shires. “He’s not real big, so he has got to stay healthy.”

The coach added that Donovan Duvernay and Kameron Steen, a pair of wide receiv-ers, will likely see time in the secondary.

Duvernay was a starting cornerback a year ago.

“Depth in the secondary is probably our biggest issue. We may have to use more of those skill guys from offense,” Behrens noted.
