Each summer white tents dot the landscape around Powderhorn Park bringing individuals from all over the country together to enjoy an abundance of creativity and skill that flows through the artists participating in the Powderhorn Art Fair. The real beauty of the Powderhorn Art Fair is that the event’s impact is felt throughout the year and not just on event days. The Powderhorn Art Fair is a unique collaboration with the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association (PPNA) and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB). Proceeds from the Art Fair help fund park programs such as theatre arts, computer lab, teen center, music recording studio, the pottery studio and team sports – giving neighborhood residents of all ages a safe environment in which to play, learn and grow. As you enjoy this year’s Art Fair, please take a moment to reflect on your importance to Powderhorn Park and our community. Emily’s work has largely focused on regional environmental and modern land use concerns. From expressive tree forms and intimate portraits to moody landscapes and maps, she has sought to develop a dialogue between the viewer and the natural world through colorful woodcuts, collagraphs and mono-types. Using these media and im-agery, she hopes to convey not

only the sense of our place in the environment but also a desire to understand and protect the natu-ral world.

Emily grew up in Northern Low-er Michigan and currently lives in Minnesota.

Second PlaceJulie Crabtree, Fiber

Bill creates robot sculptures from a variety of materials acquired from thrift and antique shops, yard sales, recycle shops, flea markets and hardware stores. The results are unique and one-of-a-kind robot sculptures. Bill is motivated by his passion for art, beauty, post-apoc-alyptic movies and recycling. His bots come to life with unique per-sonalities and narratives as he assembles them. His creative process is intentional, spontaneous and serendipitous. His bots are truly a la-bor of love. Bill is a South Dakota native currently living in Minnesota. Bill’s Bot Shop - billsbotshop.com

Julie’s artwork is a combination of stitchery, made by hand to create multiple layers of texture, free mo-tion machine stitching, dyeing, needle felting, distressing, fusing, dissolving and including some mixed media to create individual pieces. Many of her pieces are inspired by the ever changing landscapes and the won-ders of nature to be captured in needle and thread. Wherever pos-

sible she tries to use recycled fibers and fabrics in the process. She also teaches workshops on various tech-niques in Modern Embroidery Fiber Art. Julie was born in Nottingham-shire, England and currently lives in Wisconsin.

Each year four top awards (Best In Show, Second Place, Third Place, Merit) and invitational awards are given to Main Exhibitors and one top award to the Community Showcase. All artists are eligible for The Spirit of Powderhorn award. A panel of three judges, of varying

art backgrounds (one of whom is a Powderhorn Park Neighborhood resident), is chosen by the Art Fair Committee to jury the Main Exhibitors and select award winners. One judge is chosen by the Community Showcase Committee to select the Spirit of Powderhorn award winner (the artist whose work best represents the unique qualities found in the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood), and “Best In” for the Community Showcase.

Tammy Olson, Mixed Media

In Tammy’s mixed media art she enjoys bringing many different mediums together into one piece such as watercolor, coffee, acrylic, ink, pencil, found papers, old text, and recycled coffee filters and tea bags. Tammy is drawn to bright, lively and vivid colors especially orange, lime green and aqua. She

finds inspiration all around her in the Driftless Region of Wisconsin, but especially in the light hearted play of her children and their in-teractions with nature.

Third PlaceEmily Koehler, Printmaking

Spirit Of PowderhornAdam Costello, Photography

Adam has always made his photo-graphs the old-fashioned way, with film and paper. His equipment con-sists of various 35mm, medium and large format systems, including a 5x7 Seneca City View camera made in the late 1800’s. Currently, Adam’s favorite camera is his Speed Graphic Pacemaker that he has been experi-menting with making soft focus lens-es adapted to fit to the front of it.

He thinks it is fun to experiment with photo equipment twice and sometimes three times as old as he is and seeing the images that emerge. Adam is a Minnesota native who lives in Minneapolis.

This year’s Powderhorn Art Fair image is by 2014 Invitational Award Winner, wire sculpture artist Bud Bullivant. “Great Blue Heron” is an original

wire sculpture created especially for this year’s Pow-derhorn Art Fair. An image of the sculpture is seen in this year’s PR and on 2015 t-shirts for sale at the Powderhorn Art Fair. The original wire sculpture can be seen in Bud’s booth (59) during the art fair.

“In a world that seems to get more and more complicated by the day; I have come to love working with the simplified lines of wire sculp-ture. I have always enjoyed drawing and in wire I can “draw” in three dimensions. I am a passion-ate observer of nature and a mighty storyteller. My memory is filled with scenes and events that I have collected from time I’ve spent as an out-doorsman. I bring those memories into clear view in wire and strive to make connections to others with these sculptures. Each piece is a hand made memory and it delights me that so many people share in the joy of finding them in a simple and recognizable form.

My wire sculptures are often created using one continuous piece of wire. They are often com-plex compositions with the illusion of simplicity. Viewers see the simplification and understand the imagery but are well aware of the complexity and challenge of the work. These contradictory elements are often what captivate viewers of my work. They marvel at the fact that the tools and materials are minimal and accessible to anyone who wants to visit their local hardware store.

I am happy to be back at the Powderhorn Art Fair and honored to have had my work chosen to rep-resent the show. Powderhorn Park is a jewel nes-tled into an urban setting and a wonderful venue for an art festival. It is a gathering of wonderful people, amazing artwork in a beautiful setting. We all owe gratitude to those before us who had the wisdom to preserve this and other green spaces in the plan for this growing city.”

What do these words have in common: millefiori, skinner blend, pasta ma-

chines and kaleidoscope cane? No, they’re not heavy metal bands from the 70’s- they’re all polymer clay tech-niques. At this year’s Powderhorn Art Fair, members of the Polymer Clay Guild will have their pasta machines rolling to demonstrate techniques.

Polymer clay is uncured plastic that comes in bright colors that can be mixed. The basic techniques have a lot in common with both Venetian

Making Cake Puppets at the Powderhorn Art Fair with Patty Gille

Saturday event

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts turns 100 this year. On a

continued quest to surprise and delight, and to bring art outside the museum walls and into the community, the MIA invited artist Patty Gille to make cake puppets with you today.

Patty Gille has been a Powderhorn resident and “fix-ture” for many years. She is a childcare worker (Early Learning and Seward), fruit-laden “Carmen” in the May Day Parade, and composer of such neighborhood clas-sics as Halloweeno, May Day Money Song, and Raffle (sung at Empty Bowls).

Today she’s delighted to help people create a ver-sion of her “magic” cake puppet, a frequent per-former during Saturday Matinee Puppet Shows at In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater.

glassworking and candymaking. Poly-mer clay, molten glass, and hard candy all have the ability to make complex patterns in a log form that can then be stretched & stretched to make the pattern really tiny. The log is then sliced to reveal the intricate patterns. After completing an artwork, the clay is baked in a home oven to become “cured”. This cured plastic is similar to PVC piping in its strength and du-rability.

The 35-member Guild meets at the Textile Center in Minneapolis the

second Tuesday of each month; clay play starts at 5:00, and the meeting begins at 7:00.

Want to see more polymer clay? Several Artist members of the Guild have their own booths in the park this weekend:

Powderhorn Art Fair volunteers receive T-shirts to help them stand out in the crowd.

By Becky Timm

For the past five years, I have had the privilege of being a part of the Powderhorn Art Fair. As my last days of being the Executive Director of the

Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association (PPNA) draw down, I have the chance to think back about all of the amazing, and sometimes heart breaking stories that have unfolded over this time.

I was hired in June of 2011, and my first art fair in Au-gust was an eye opener. In one short day, a quiet park transforms into a tent wonderland with hundreds of artists enthusiastically setting up shop. As a self-identi-fied non-artist, I have valued the interactions with art-ists who are part of the art fair, and part of other PPNA programs like Powderhorn365, Arts on Chicago, paint-the-pavement and wall murals. To me, the arts are one of the best ways to bridge differences, speak a common language and build community.

Planning for the art fair is a year round process. I want to give profound thanks to my dear friend Dixie Treichel who co-created this fabulous event with me for five years. I want to thank the Art Fair Committee, the co-ordinators, the park directors and staff, the dozens and dozens of volunteers and the PPNA Board of Directors for your unending reserves of support and energy.

Next year, the art fair will celebrate its 25th Anniver-sary. It started with an idea from three local artists to put on an art fair to support artists and to raise money for arts activities at Powderhorn Park. Now, the art fair is a thriving and growing part of the arts scene in the Twin Cities and raises about $20,000 each year for arts, culture and sports activities for the Powderhorn Park neighborhood. This is why I believe arts can change the world.

See you all next year as I take on a new role as one of the many art fair volunteers.

Enjoy!

By Liz Kraus, Recreation Supervisor, Powderhorn Park

I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all of you who will be visiting Powderhorn Park for this year’s

Powderhorn Art Fair. This event is truly amazing!

Whether this is your first time or have been here many times, you’ll find that the event is always fresh and new, with many exciting artists displaying their creations and food vendors that represent all corners of the world.

While thousands of people enjoy this event every year, it has traditionally produced a lot of waste that we have started to think about differently.

A major commitment that we’ve made, as event organizers, is to work towards becoming a truly green event. As our ability to compost and recycle more items evolves within our communities, so will the ability at our events.

Last year, we composted or recycled about 70-80% more waste than the previous year. To put this in perspec-tive, that’s the equivalent of roughly seven green trash dumpsters that remained empty, due to participants

taking the time to dispose of items properly. That’s quite impressive!

We’d like to continue on our quest, so as you enjoy the Fair, please join us in our efforts by disposing of compostable/recyclable materials into appropriate containers located throughout the park.

I hope you enjoy the Fair and look forward to seeing you at the park!

Waste WatcherPowderhorn Art Fair Staffer Avram Keeps It Green

By Sabrina Crews

Avram Leier-wood is al-ways looking

for ways to recycle anything and every-thing. “I’m not per-fect,” he says, “but pretty much have waste management down to a science. I’ve learned a lot from the wonderfully green community in South Minneapolis.” Now on his third year as Powderhorn Art Fair’s Waste Sta-tion Coordinator,

Avram oversees the set-up of waste stations throughout Powderhorn Park, educates visitors on what is recyclable and compostable, and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty by sorting the waste himself.

He’s also passionate about Powderhorn. In the Heart of the Beast’s annual MayDay Parade and Festival tops Avram’s list of favorite local events, and his go-to neigh-borhood spot is the May Day Café on Bloomington Av-enue. He also loves discovering new artists at the Pow-derhorn Art Fair, and plays an essential role in executing Powderhorn Art Fair’s green initiatives and policies. “Pow-derhorn Art Fair goes above and beyond other art fairs because we care about the environmental impact of the event. Simply throwing things in the trash is easy. Sorting recycling and compost is more time consuming, but in the end, it is absolutely the right thing to do!”

Although art fair goers may need to take an extra minute or walk a few more feet to dispose of their waste ap-propriately, Avram hopes they’re aware of the benefits. Powderhorn Art Fair’s waste stations keep a significant amount of trash out of the landfill or incinerator. “I un-derstand you need to get rid of your waste as quickly as possible,” he says, “but do you really want to breathe in that paper plate when it gets burned in downtown Min-neapolis?” Eventually, Avram would like to see Powder-

Look for the green flags. There will be five strategi-cally placed waste stations positioned throughout the event. Each waste station includes a 10 x 10 tent, green flag marker, waste stations banners, and three types of waste receptacles (organic waste, recyclable waste and trash waste).

Volunteers will be at each waste station assisting and educating art

fair goers about the proper way to dis-pose of their waste.

horn Art Fair become 100% waste-free. He’s confident that someday the art fair won’t generate any waste at all. Powderhorn Art Fair participants and visitors can do their part by separating their waste into the proper re-ceptacles and asking questions. Stop by one of the waste stations to meet Avram and his dedicated team members, and learn something new about recyclable and/or com-postable materials. “All it takes is a little more time to ponder where your trash goes,” explains Avram. “Mother Earth will thank you for it!”

Four Years a Favorite

By Sabrina Crews

Thank you, Minnesota Women’s Press readers! Af-ter completing an online survey earlier this year, you named Powderhorn Art Fair a 2015 Hon-

oree in the “Favorite Art Festival” category. The news appeared in MWP’s most anticipated issue of the year, “What Women Want!” Readers look forward to the special edition all year and keep it as a reference. To celebrate four years in a row as “Favorite Art Festival”, we’re revealing four little-known facts about our favor-ite women-centered publication:

1 Since February 2009, MWP has featured the art of 79 Minnesota women artists on the cover, along with a feature story inside the magazine.

2 In April, Minnesota Women’s Press celebrated 30 years of publishing!

3 April’s 30th an-niversary issue featured local “cake lady” Bon-nie Heller, who has painted hun-dreds and hun-dreds of cakes. According to Heller, “Cakes take us through life’s rituals”.

4 Minnesota Women’s Press has more than 500 distri-bution sites around the Twin Cities. You can find one near you by logging onto WomensPress.com.

Thanks again to MWP and its readers for four years of celebrating the Powderhorn Art Fair. Will we make it to year five? That’s up to you!
