• BRICIO, HODSON TAKE HOME NATIONAL HONORS ... USC’s Samantha Bricion and Stanford’s Hayley Hodson were tabbed AVCA National Player of the Year and AVCA National Freshman of the Year, respectively. Bricio is the fifth Pac-12 player in the last six years to win the national player of the year honor. She had an outstanding season en route to the honor, leading the Trojans to a 30-win campaign, a No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and a share of the Pac-12 crown after finishing the 2014 campaign with a disappointing 16-16 record. She put up incredible numbers this season, leading the nation in points (6.18) and services aces per set (0.68), while ranking third in kills per set (5.14). Hodson is fourth player in Pac-12 history to win the national freshman honor, the second in three years and first Cardinal. Hodson led Stanford to a 23-7 mark, leading the team with a 3.82 kills per set average, as well as 4.52 points per set. She was the only freshman in the Conference to rank in the top 10 in both categories, coming in seventh and sixth, respectively.

• RECORDS WATCH ... USC’s Samantha Bricio has etched her named all over the Pac-12 record book, ending her career as just the seventh player in league history to ammass 2,000 kills in a career, ending with 2,095 to rank fifth all-time. Already owning the league’s service aces record entering the season as the only player to record over 200, she leaves having shattered the career mark with 301.

• SEEING DOUBLE ... For the second-straight year, Arizona’s Penina Snuka cracked the 20-match mark for double-doubles, posting a league-high 22 on the season. She had 25 last year, making her the first player since 2011 with 20 or more double-doubles (20, Stanford’s Rachel Williams and Karissa Cook). Thirteen different Pac-12 players have 10 or more double-double matches this season. Fifteen hit that mark in 2014, 18 had 10 or more in 2013, 12 reached that in 2012 while 11 recorded double-digit double-doubles in 2011 and 2010.

• JOIN THE CLUB ... Six players joined the 1,000-career dig club this season, including Colorado’s Alexis Austin, Washington State’s Kyra Holt, Stanford’s Jordan Burgess, Stanford’s Brittany Howard and Oregon’s Martenne Bettendorf. Arizona State’s Macey Gardner entered the season over the 1K mark and ended her career short at mid-season, tallying 1,882 kills for her career. USC’s Samantha Bricio was also already over the 1,000-mark, but became the first place in USC history and the seventh in Pac-12 history to get up over 2,000, ranking fifth all-time in the league. Stanford’s Inky Ajanaku will enter next season for her final campaign over the 1,000 mark, as well. She say out this season after suffering a season-ending injury last summer.

• SENIOR CLASS AWARD ... Washington’s Cassie Strickland was selected the winner of the Senior CLASS Award. The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I volleyball coaches, national volleyball media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division I volleyball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have no-table achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition. A model student-athlete both on and off the volleyball court, Strickland is a three-time Academic All-Pac 12 honoree who earned 2014 Pac 12 Libero of the Year honors in just her first season in the position before going on to earn AVCA All-America honors as a senior. Strickland has maintained a 3.21 GPA entering her senior year. As an anthropology major, she demonstrated her commitment to her future career by participating in a study abroad trip to Tahiti to study the effects of colonization on communities. Stanford senior Jordan Burgess was named a first team Senior CLASS All-American.

• Bring it on... In order to prepare for the rigors of the Pac-12, league teams scheduled tough non-conference matches. Of the 129 non-conference tilts on the 2015 docket, 37 were against teams that competed in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

• PAC-12 COACHES GETS MILESTONE VICTORIES ... Utah’s Beth Launiere picked up her 500th-career victory this season, ending the season at 501 in her 26 seasons. Her entire coaching career has been spending roaming the sidelines in Salt Lake City with the Utes.

• PAC-12 TEAMS WORK FAST... Pac-12 teams went 97-31 (.758) in the non-conference, including going 27-7 in the opening weekend. In the opening weekend, 17 of the 27 wins came in three-set sweeps. Since 2002, league teams have dominated the first weekend of play, going 332-81 (.804).

• Eight Pac-12 players were named 2015 AVCA All-Americans, with another seven garnering honorable mention honors. For a full list of honorees, see page 5.

• FAB FRESHMAN ... Pac-12 volleyball continues to recruit marquee student-athletes. Seven Pac-12 teams landed at least one Volleyball Magazine FAB 50 recruit with OREGON pacing the Conference with four. STANFORD signed the nation’s top recruit according to the publication in Hayley Hodson.

• NEW FACE FOR 2016 ... The Pac-12 has already welcomed a new face for 2016. Colorado announced the hiring of Jesse Mahoney. Mahoney is the fifth coach in CU history and joins the Buffs after spending four seasons at the University of Denver where he guided the Pioneers to a, 88-41 mark, including back-to-back NCAA Tournament seasons in 2014 and 2015. The Buffs finished 19-13 overall and 11-3 in Pac-12, placing fifth in the Conference.

• Fear the Underclassmen... The underclassmen in the Pac-12 were the majority again this year, out-numbering the upperclassmen, 110-82, and accounting for nearly 57 percent of combined Pac-12 rosters.

PAC-12 WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL WEEKLY RELEASE // December 21, 2015 6

The freshman class was the biggest in the Conference with 68 rostered players with no collegiate experi-ence, outnumbering the junior class by 15. The senior class was the smallest with just 39 players in their final year of action. ARIZONA had the most freshmen with nine, followed by UTAH and WASHINGTON STATE who both had seven each. The Wildcats and Golden Bears had the most underclassmen with 12 combined freshmen and sophomores. The Cougars only had one senior on this year’s roster for the small-est senior class in the league. Class designations are based on playing eligibility.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING...• The Pac-12 has captured six of the last 15 NCAA crowns (2011 - UCLA, 2005 - Washington, 2004 - Stanford, 2003 - USC, 2002 - USC, 2001 - Stanford) and 14 NCAA titles overall.

• The current group of Pac-12 volleyball coaches finished the 2015 season with over 5,000 Division I victories to its credit, having compiled 5,040 wins in a combined 230 years of head coaching experience. That averages out to nearly 22 wins a season for each coach per season.

In addition, these coaches have guided NCAA Division I teams to 38 NCAA semifinal appearances and eight NCAA titles. In the last 14 years, seven different coaches have been named the ASICS/Volleyball Magazine Coach of the Year and/or the AVCA Coach of the Year - Arizona’s David Rubio (2001 ASICS), Cali-fornia’s Rich Feller (2007 ASICS, 2010 ASICS and AVCA), Stanford’s John Dunning (2001 AVCA), UCLA’s Mike Sealy (2011 AVCA), USC’s Mick Haley (2003 AVCA, 2015 AVCA), Washington’s Jim McLaughlin (2004 ASICS and AVCA), and UCLA’s Andy Banachowski (2006 ASICS and AVCA).

• The Pac-12 has had 10 or more All-Americans selections in seven of the last 10 years. This year, eight were named to the AVCA All-America squad, USC’s Samantha Bricio and Washington’s Lianna Sybeldon were named to the first team, Stanford had a pair of second-team selections in Hayley Hodson and Merete Lutz, with USC’s Alicia Ogoms joining them. On the third team, Stanford’s Madi Bugg and Brittany Howard, and UCLA’s Taylor Formico earned spots. Ten former Pac-12 players have earned All-America honors four times, while 18 players in all have earned All-American honors three times.

Since 1990, Pac-12 players garnered AVCA Player of the Year honors 14 times, including the five of the last six - CAL’s Carli Lloyd (2010), USC’s Alex Jupiter (2011), ORE’s Alaina Bergsma (2012), WASH’s Krista Vansant (2013) and the latest honoree in USC’s Samantha Bricio. The NCAA Honda Sports Award honor has been bestowed upon a Pac-12 volleyball player 13 times, including Vansant in 2013.

In addition to the annual coaches poll, the Pac-12 an-nounced the Preseason All-Pac-12 team, as voted on by the league coaches. 10 of the 14 all-Conference honorees from a year ago appear on the 14-player preseason squad, including eight first-, second- or third-team AVCA All-Americans. Pac-12 volleyball is coming off another historic season after sending a league-record 10 teams to the NCAA Tourna-ment in 2014, besting the previous best of nine which was set in 2013. Stanford advanced to the national semifinals, mark-ing the fifth-straight year a Conference team had advanced that far. Half of the Pac-12’s NCAA Tournament teams were seeded in the top 16 and the league went 10-0 in the first round, the most first-round tournament wins for the Conference. The Pac-12 also set a league record for most teams ranked in the AVCA Coaches Poll, with nine teams in the top 25 of the final polling.

PAC-12 VOLLEYBALL AT THE LONDON OLYMPICS

The Pac-12 has had a long and storied history at the Olympics, and the 2012 London Games was no exception. The Conference was well represented in London, sending over 250 athletes, delegates and officials with Pac-12 ties. In the sport of volleyball, the Conference’s influence could be seen in the indoor competition and on the sand. In the indoor competition, five former Pac-12 players were named to the Team USA squad and two on the coaching staff also had Conference affiliations with the league. In addition, former Husky Janine Sandell represented host-nation Great Britain. The USA team went on to win the silver medal. The Conference’s ties on the sand could not be overlooked. Both of Team USA’s sand women’s teams had Pac-12 ties. Three of the four players in the “All-American Final” were Pac-12 alumni, as the Confer-ence added a gold and silver medal to its total medal count. Pac-12 athletes claimed 45 total medals at the London Olympic games - 19 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze. If the Conference was a nation, it would have ranked fifth in overall medals and in gold medals.
