EDITORIAL

Kjære leser,

Bransjen vår er inne i tøffe tider. Etter en nesten uavbrutt vekst siden før 1990 har markedet nærm-est kollapset. Årsaken er overkontrahering av skip kombinert med fallende oljepris. Og det er ingen tegn til at markedet vil bedre seg på lenge. Dette må også vi i Østensjø Rederi forberede oss på. Tøffe kostnadsinnstramminger gjøres i alle ledd, samtidig som vi arbeider hardt for å holde skipene våre i operasjon. Med på laget har jeg dyktige kol-legaer. De har høy kompetanse innen sitt fagfelt, inklusive det å yte service til våre kunder. Sammen skal vi lose selskapet gjennom nedgangsperioden.

Vi er vant til omstilling og vil fortsette vårt fokus på effektivitet, kundebehandling og innovasjon. Perioden vi er inne i nå, er svært kontrastfull. I det dårligste markedet på flere tiår har vi hele ti nybygg under bygging, noe som er svært positivt. Vi har også entret det fornybare energimarkedet –en god indikasjon på vår omstillingsevne. I løpet av førti år har vi etablert fire segmenter, og kan dermed by på et mangfold som vi er stolte av og som jeg tror vil være til stor hjelp i den fasen vi nå er inne i.

I denne utgaven av magasinet vårt kan du lese mer om våre nye kontrakter og byggeprosjekter. I tillegg håper jeg at du vil lære litt mer om oss som bedrift og de organisasjonsendringene vi nå gjør for å bedre vår service og konkurransekraft ytterligere. Dersom du har kommentarer til artiklene, er det bare å ta kontakt. Vi setter pris på tilbakemeldinger.

Et nytt år nærmer seg. For maritim bransje vil året bli tøft. En av bransjens største utfordringer i tiden som kommer, vil være å beholde kompetansen vi har opparbeidet oss gjennom årtier. Én ting er jeg sikker på: Oppturen vil igjen komme. Da skal vi stå klar til å gripe alle de muligheter den vil by på.

Med disse ordene ønsker jeg deg og din familie – enten du er rederiets kunde, samarbeidspartner eller medarbeider – en god og fredfull jul og et riktig godt nyttår.

Dear reader,

Times are tough. After an almost uninterrupted growth since before 1990, the market has virtually collapsed. A surplus of new building contracts of ves-sels in combination with a decline in the oil prize is to blame. And there are no signs of a speedy improve-ment. As a business, we need to prepare ourselves accordingly. Tough cost effective measures have been implemented on all levels and we are work-ing hard to keep our vessels in operation. With me on this, I have my competent colleagues. They are highly skilled in their field and know how to provide good service to our customers. Together, we will steer our company through this downturn. Being well accustomed to change, we will continue our focus on efficiency, customer service and innovation.

We are in a period of contrasts. In the worst mar-ket in decades, we have as much as ten new builds under way. This is a positive thing. We have also en-tered the renewable energy market – a good indica-tion of our adaptability. During forty years, we have established four segments, thus being able to offer a diversity that we are proud of and that I believe will be very helpful in the phase we are currently in.

In this edition of our magazine, you can read more about our new contracts and new builds. In addition, I hope you will learn a little more about us as a company and the organizational changes we are making to improve our service and to strengthen our competitiveness. Should you have any comments on the articles please feel free to comment, as we would appreciate your feedback.

A new year is approaching. For the maritime indus-try, it will be a difficult one. One of our industry’s biggest challenges in the upcoming period will be to retain the expertise we have built through decades. I am certain of one thing: The market will recover. And when it does we’ll be ready to seize every new opportunity offered.

With these words, I wish you and your family – whether you are our customer, partner or employee – a peaceful and merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Early in 2015, DONG Energy invited interested parties to an introduc-tion meeting in Copenhagen. About 50 companies attended. In March, DONG Energy issued a formal tender and received twenty-two offers to deliver the requested vessel and services for their offshore wind farm. We were so fortunate as to win the final round, formally signing the contract in October.

FIVE YEARS FIRM PERIODThe contract has a five years firm period with five optional years. Commencement date is set for September 1st 2017. The Service Operation vessel will function as a mother ship for wind turbine techni-cians as they perform maintenance work on Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm off the coast of United Kingdom

DESIGNED FOR EFFICIENCYThe new build is a DP2 Service Operation Vessel with high station keeping capacities. The vessel’s 60 single cabins of high standard is intended to accommodate up to 40 wind turbine technicians in addition to a

marine crew of 20. A motion-compensated gangway system with an adjustable pedestal will be installed to ensure safe operations and optimal uptime. Special areas and functions on board the vessel are developed in accordance with the charterer’s requirements. The vessel, which has a length of 81.1 meters and a beam of 17 meters, will work out of Grimsby operation base in the UK.

The vessel is designed by Rolls Royce in close cooperation with us. To build the ship we chose Astilleros Gondan in Spain. This decision emphasises a long and strong relationship between our companies as this will be the 12th vessel we will get built at their yard since 2005.

FOUR SEGMENTS IN FORTY YEARSThe contract enables us to expand our business into the renewable energy sector. This is part of our strategy to diversify our operations. We know this sector has further demands for similar vessels during the next few years and that is definitively of interest to us. As with our other segments, we will work hard to develop a service that our customers will prefer. We are already on our way.

NY FEMÅRS-KONTRAKTI oktober signerte vi en femårs-kontrakt med DONG Energy som innebar bygging av et offshore støttefartøy til vindturbinparken Race Bank i engelsk sektor. Fartøyet skal fungere som moderskip for teknikerne mens de utfører vedlikehold.

BYGGET FOR EFFEKTIVITETDet nye skipet har DP2, gangbro med bevegelig pidestall og 60 enkelt-mannslugarer som vil kunne huse opptil 40 teknikere i tillegg til et marint mannskap på 20. Skipet, som er 81,1 meter langt og 17 meter bredt, vil operere ut fra Grimsby base i Storbritannia.Skipet er designet av Rolls Royce i samarbeid med oss. Verftet Asterillos Gondan i Spania skal stå for byggingen. Dette blir det tolvte skipet de bygger for oss.

FIRE SEGMENTER PÅ FØRTI ÅRDenne kontrakten gjør det mulig for oss å entre det fornybare energi- markedet. Det er et naturlig resultat av vår strategi om å skape variasjon i de operasjonene vi tilbyr. With the help of our tug Felix, our new offshore construction vessel was successfully launched. The event took place at Kleven shipyard, with shipowner Johannes Østensjø and Chief Operating Officer Kenneth Walland present. Thanks to Kleven’s expertise the process went smoothly, and floating in the water just outside the yard the vessel looked beautiful.

The offshore construction vessel is 150 meters long and is designed for cable laying operations, offshore construction and installation, mainte-nance and repair (IMR) operations. The vessel will work for Deep Ocean once delivered in April 2016.

SUCCESSFUL LAUNCHING

EDDA FREYA:

The float-out of a new vessel is always special. On August 15 this year it was time for our new offshore construction vessel (OCV) Edda Freya, to test the waters. She performed perfectly.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? The meaning of the name “Freya” is love and growth. As we already love this amazing new vessel, the name fits. And we certainly have expecta-tions of growth in regard to the experience, competency and revenue she will reward us with.

This will be the third time we use this particular name in our fleet:

Well, absolutely nothing – and at the same time surprisingly much: The discrepancy of the dynamic positioning system on board vessels is no more than the size of a pizza.

WHAT DOES PIZZA HAVE TO DO WITH A VESSEL MAINTAINING ITS POSITION?

THE DYNAMIC POSITIONING SYSTEM:

In the early days, the deviation of these devices could be more than five meters. Today it is reduced to +/– 0.30 meter. Accuracy is an important part of marine operations where precision is crucial for success. Dynamic positioning allows for correct placements of seabed installations and enables safe gangway operations. It is also vital when a vessel is in close approximation to vulnerable units at sea, such as rigs.

The positioning system is based on information from several different types of reference systems monitoring weather and position. A mathematical formula uses this information to calculate just how much power the propellers, rudders and thrusters will have to use to keep the vessel at the intended position. Even though the system is an amazing tool, it requires skilled people on board controlling it. We are fortunate enough to have just that.

THESE THREE WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE BETTER

ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE:

We aim to provide high standard customer service. Due to our expansion in recent years, we have concluded that in order to maintain our high standard and to prepare ourselves for future growth we need to make some changes. Therefore, as of October 1st, we divided our organization into three operational levels, each with a dedicated fleet manager.

Johan Rokstad, our CEO is confident this will strengthen the company’s position. “We strongly believe this change will provide our customers with better service as they will have a dedicated team working on the seg-ment of their particular interest. It will also be beneficial to our organisation as a whole.”

Our company provides services within four segments; towage, offshore, accommodation and offshore wind. As they all differ in vessel

type and the type of operation they can pro-vide, the laws and regulations under which they operate also differ. With an increasing fleet and continuous changes under which we operate, we believe that we are now better prepared for the future.

“I am looking forward to working with the crew on board to strengthen our company’s position in the tug segment. Our tug fleet is growing, we have seven new builds arriving in the next couple of years and we are capable to provide a varied range of high quality services”, says Sveinung Zahl, Fleet Manager Towage. Both Solent Towage (Southampton) and Lee Towage (Ireland) will fall under his segment.

Stian S. Waage, Fleet Manager Accommoda-tion comments, “Edda Accommodation has come a long way in a very short time. Feedback

from customers shows that our performance is constantly getting better. A positive attitude in all parts of our organization is a key element. We need to maintain our “can do” attitude both in the offices and on board the vessels while fine tuning our product for the years to come.”

Alf Helge Lyngholm agrees. “I am looking forward to focusing on our offshore fleet, making sure we are in the forefront of every-thing going on in the relevant market. We have an amazing chartering department handling the commercial aspects. My job is to make sure we have the right vessel ready. If not, we might have to build one”, he smiles. Included in his segment is the new offshore wind vessel. Another proof of our company’s ability to enter new markets and to accommo-date customers’ requests.

Med en taubåtflåte i sterk vekst ser flåtesjef Sveinung Zahl frem til å styrke segmentet i samarbeid med mannskapet om bord.

Flåtesjefen for flotellene, Stian S. Waage, ser en positiv utvikling i sitt segment som han vil jobbe for å stimulere til å fortsette. Alf Helge Lyngholm, flåtesjef for offshore, lover at han skal ha rett fartøy klart til rett jobb. Med det nye skipet som skal bygges for vindturbinparker, har han fått enda en skipstype innunder i sitt ansvarsområde.

Wärtsilä is delivering the design for our four new mooring boats bound for terminal work at Sture and Melkøya. This design is not new to our company as we have several similar boats. Max and Obelix, to mention two, are in operation at Nyhamna for Shell.

The two mooring launches working at the Melkøya terminal will start in June 2017. The duration of this contract is ten years with five optional years. The Sture contract commences in December 2016, with a duration of eight years plus seven optional years.

We have delivered tug services to the Sture terminal for several years already, but this will be our first time working at the Melkøya terminal. Both contracts are with Statoil ASA.

They might look cute, but with a bollard pull exceeding five tons our new mooring boats, built for terminal work, are a force to be reckoned with. However, we do like it if you find them to be cute too.

A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH

COOPERATION WITH WÄRTSILÄ:

De ser kanskje søte ut, men med en trekkraft på fem tonn hver er disse fortøyningsfartøyene noen kraftfulle plugger.

Wärtsilä har levert designet på våre fire nye fortøyningsbåter. De skal utføre terminalarbeid på Sture og Melkøya for Statoil ASA. Kontraktene, som har oppstart i 2016 og 2017, er på henholdsvis ti år og åtte år. Selv om de fire båtene er nye, har vi flere båter i selskapet med liknende design. Max og Obelix er to liknende båter. De arbeider i dag ved Nyhamna terminal for Shell.

PARTNERSHIP

After eighteen years, Øyvind is now retiring from his position as manager of the local maritime apprentice office: Maritimt Opplæringskontor Sør/Vest Norge. Østensjø Rederi took part in establishing this office in 1996, and we have since then received all our apprentices through it.

Øyvind and his colleagues have continuously worked to improve the learning experience for the nation’s apprentices and to provide the instructors on board with the tools they need to guide them in the best way. Øyvind s dedication and passion has made the office a place of innovation, knowledge and guidance. Thank you so much for your amazing effort, Øyvind.

Inge Jarl Auestad will take over the managing role from 1st February 2016.

WHEN COSTLY CHANGES MAKE SUCCESS

Large projects require a great deal of planning and sometimes costly changes. On Edda Fjord, all the modules on deck were rearranged for the Heidelberg job. Certainly, a high cost, but worth it when it allows for a smoother operation and – most importantly – satisfied clients.

Større prosjekter krever mye planlegging, noen ganger også kostbare endringer. Selv om disse er kostbare, er de verdt det når operasjoner kan utføres bedre og kundene blir fornøyde.

FASE I: EDDA FJORD ANKOMMER HEIDELBERGDa vår MPSV Edda Fjord ankom Heidelberg, var riggfoten i riktig posisjon. Lekteren Balder utførte hovedoppgaven med festingen av gass- og væsketransportrør, samt kontrollkabler fra havbunnen og til riggen. Da “Balder” hadde ferdigstilt arbeidet og forlatt området, overtok Edda Fjord kontrollen for 500-metersonen. Fjords primæroppgave var flotellvirk-somhet for de 120 personene som arbeidet på innretningen.

ETT SKIP, ETT TEAMEt av Anadarkos krav var at mentaliteten “ett skip, ett team“ ble etablert

om bord. Dette medførte omstruktureringer av modulene på dekk. Resul-tatet ble felles spisested, flere arbeidsplasser og felles uteområde med benk-er, solseil og nettilgang. Kaptein Håvard Melvær sier at de strukturelle endringene bedret arbeidsflyten, men framhever òg at smil og tiltale ved fornavn er viktig for arbeidsmiljøet. Dette koster ikke noe, men bidrar til trygge og hyggelige arbeidsplasser – og forenkler også håndteringen av vanskelige situasjoner.

FASE II: OPPRETTHOLDE FORVENTNINGERVerdens største kranlekter, “Thialf”, løftet toppdekket på plass da Edda Fides ankom Heidelberg. De overtar for Edda Fjord som flotell i siste fase av prosjektet. På det meste vil de ha 320 klienter om bord. Alt er lagt til rette for at samme gode service skal videreføres i denne fasen. Om de klarer å lære seg navnet på alle gjestene, gjenstår å se.

PHASE I: THE ARRIVAL OF EDDA FJORD When our multi-purpose supply vessel (MPSV) Edda Fjord arrived at the Heidelberg location, the spar was already upright and moored (held in place by nine mooring lines made up of chains and fibre ropes).

The heavy lift construction barge Balder was still in legal possession of the spar and was connecting subsea risers and umbilicals from seabed to spar. (Risers are pipes used to transfer fluids or gas to or from the seabed and surface facilities, while umbilicals are tubes that include electric cables or optical fibres used to control seabed structures from the platform.)

As both risers and umbilicals are situated at the centre of the spar, the spar needs to be installed before the top deck is lifted into place. A temporary deck was already in place making it possible to do the preparation work. When Balder left the spar, the 500 meter zone became Edda Fjord’s command.

During the commissioning phase, Edda Fjord acted as a flotel providing high quality accommodation, food and housekeeping services for 120 people. The marine crew also took part in coordinating simultaneous op-erations (SIMOPS) together with the client. During this initial phase, Anadarko conducted pre-tension of mooring lines, pressure testing and cleaned up the area for the next phase.

ONE VESSEL, ONE TEAM!One of Anadarko’s requests was to implement the “one vessel, one team” mentality on board. In order to provide a joint dining area and additional office space, structural changes had to be made to the vessel by rearranging all modules on deck. The changes enabled everyone to eat as one team. The deck on the forward modules allowed for a shared outside recreational area with park benches, sun sails and of course Wi-Fi access. “These costly structural changes provided a more effective flow of personnel and gave us the opportunity to meet Anadarko’s require-ments in a way that otherwise would have been difficult. All the proposed changes were based on the crew’s previous experi-ences. We are fortunate to have a management willing to provide us with the tools we feel are necessary to succeed”, says master of Edda Fjord Håvard Melvær. Restructuring a vessel can only do so much. Sometimes the simple day-to-day things allow for the relaxed and positive atmosphere needed to build a team. “We set a goal to meet everyone with a smile and to greet each person by using his or her name. It doesn’t cost anything, but it creates a strong foundation for an inclusive work environment and good relations. The building of a united team also provides us with a sense of security when difficult issues need to be addressed. It makes everything easier for all parties”, Melvær explains.

PHASE II: KEEPING UP WITH THE EXPECTATIONSThe top deck was being lifted into place by the world’s largest crane vessel/barge “Thialf ” when the accommodation vessel Edda Fides arrived at Heidelberg.

As the gangway connected onto the western part of the spar, their job to make phase II a success for both Anadarko and ourselves began. At its peak during this project, Edda Fides will accommodate more than 320 clients. All of whom will experience the quality customer service that Edda Fides is known for.

Making sure all successful measures from phase 1 are implemented, our two vessels have exchanged experiences. Some personnel in the catering- and service- department have even changed vessel in order to make sure our clients’ expectations are met. Whether they are able to learn everyone’s name remains to be seen.

ABOUT US

Five minutes each day the second floor of our head office turns into a training facility. At exactly two o’clock people come out of their offices carrying colourful stretching bands. Ingrid Bergersen leads the exercising session as she has been doing for four years.

The exercises are always the same, as are the amount of repetitions for each one. You are supposed to change after twenty repetitions, but that only happens if anyone remembers to count. The heaviest part is when you need to stretch the rubber band over your head. Since everyone is deeply focused, the first exercise is often performed in utter silence. Groans, laughter and occasional “I need to scratch my nose”-excuses do appear as people start to struggle.

FIVE-MINUTE BREAK The five-minute break is a valued time and an important part in creating a positive and healthy working environment. Other contributors are flexible workstations, fresh fruit and varied lunches supplied throughout the week. In addi-tion to the everyday rubber band exercise, our colleagues ashore and on board participate in triathlons and several biking and jogging events.

Our seafaring colleagues also participate in various competitions organized by the Norwegian Maritime Authority. Our crew on board the tug “Ajax” won first prize last year and came in at number four this year. Well done!

DJUPADALTEN 2015

In Østensjø Rederi we believe in healthy, happy employees and a positive working environment. If you happen to be at our head office around two o’clock you will most likely hear groans and laughter.

Despite miserable weather, our Østensjø Rederi team ran “Djupadalten” on Saturday October 24th along with 1 560 other participants.

Our team of seven did great on the 9.3 kilometer long run. Thomas Wiig finished first of our team, with the great time of only 38 minutes and 59 seconds. The training for next year’s competition has already started and the team urges everyone to join.

“Next year my goal is to finish within 50 minutes”, says Miriam Hanson, document controller. Wiig aims for a sprint on a shorter track of only four kilometres.

På tross av dårlig vær stilte kontoransatte fra Østensjø Rederi til start ved Djupadalten lørdag 24. oktober sammen med 1 560 andre deltakere. Vårt lag på syv presterte bra på den 9,3 kilometer lange løpeturen.

Først i mål av våre syv var Thomas Wiig, med en suveren tid på kun 38 minutter og 59 skunder. Laget har allerede startet opptreningen til neste år og oppfordrer alle til å bli med.

“Neste år er målet å komme under 50 minutter”, sier Miriam Hanson, document controller. Wiig satser på en kortere distanse neste år.

In today’s market situation it’s all too easy for a company conference to spend all its allotted time focusing on cost saving measures and the market downturn. Even though those themes are ever so important, this year’s conference also gave room for good news.

I in-nleggene sine minnet både viseadministreren-de direktør Kenneth Walland og finansdirektør Håvard Framnes deltakerne på viktigheten av å spare. “Vi skal gjøre det vi kan for å holde skipene våre i drift, men det er viktig at vi alle bidrar med sparetiltak”, sa Walland.

NYE MULIGHETERWalland informerte også deltakerne om to større endringer for selskapet. Inndelingen i tre operasjonelle segmenter som vil styrke tjenestene vi tilbyr i hvert enkelt segment, samt kontrakten med DONG Energy som gir oss innpass i det fornybare energimarkedet.

Every year we hold two operational confe- rences in Haugesund. According to Master Johannes Golmen, who attended his fourth conference this year, the conference is a good place to have important discussions and for maritime and onshore employees to meet.

ROUGH WATER AHEADIn their presentations, both Kenneth Walland (COO) and Håvard Framnes (CFO) stressed the importance of focusing on cost saving measures. ”We will do everything we can to keep all of our vessels in operation, but it is important that everyone contributes by saving wherever possible”, said Walland. He veri- fied that the market situation has changed drastically since the last conference. He was, however, confident that the diversity of

the operations we provide would be a huge advantage for our company as a whole during this period.

NEW OPPORTUNITIESAt the conference, Walland also revealed the exciting news of us entering the offshore wind segment. In addition, he talked about the organisational changes implemented in order to strengthen each segment, enabling us to meet increasing demands and still maintain a high standard. “Making this change will help us become more specialised”, said Walland. Each department will have its own fleet- and technical manager, plus a team for chartering, HR, HSEQ and other support functions.

“Each building process is equally exciting.” – Johan Rokstad, CEO, Østensjø Rederi

Østensjø Rederi has a longstanding and successful collaboration with Asterillos Gondan. Together we have built several outstanding vessels and this year alone we have commissioned an additional four.

In January, we gave the Asterillos Gondan shipyard the assignment to build the three escort tugs for our Melkøya contract with Statoil. These tugs have a RAL4000 DF design and is larger than the five previous tugs the yard built for us. In addition, the yard was awarded the building contract for the first service operation vessell (SOV) in our new segment Offshore Wind. The vessel will work for DONG Energy at Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm. This will be the fourth offshore vessel that Asterillos Gondan is building for us.

Even though we are entering a new segment with this vessel, the processes of building new designs incorporating breakthrough technolo- gies are not new to the yard or us. Innovation in vessel design is crucial to stay competitive in this business. “New technologies, new knowledge of hull shapes and how they perform at sea and information on the operations the vessel is set to perform, will always influence vessel designs. Each process is different, that is why each building process is equally exiting”, says CEO Johan Rokstad. The steel construction process for the escort tugs has now begun. “We are always excited when initiating a new project for Østensjø Rederi, but this time the challenge is even bigger because both of us are moving forward into new technology. Thus, for us it is an additional pleasure to work as a team on dual fuel technology development”, says the Factory Director, Ceferino Ron.

Fire av våre nye skip skal bygges hos vår gode samarbeidspartner skipsverftet Asterillos Gondan i Spania. Tre nye taubåter som skal gå på Melkøya for Statoil ASA, er allerede påbegynt. De har RAL400 DF design som er ulikt designet på de fem tidligere skipene verftet har bygget for oss. I tillegg skal Gondan bygge det nye offshoreskipet som skal settes inn i vindturbinmarkedet. Dette blir det fjerde offshoreskipet verftet bygger for oss. Alle skipene skal være leverings- klare i løpet av to år.

Innovasjon i byggeprosesser er nødvendig for å holdes oss konkurransedyktige i dagens marked. Tilgang til ny teknologi og ny kunnskap vil påvirke design-prosessen. “Ingen prosesser er like, det er det som gjør hver byggeprosess så spennende”, sier administrerende direktør, Johan Rokstad.

40 YEARS OF BUILDING GOOD RELATIONS

ASSOCIATION WITH SHELL:

Signing a new client is an achievement. Sustaining this new relationship is a good indicator that you are doing something right. One might even call it a success. We believe we have reached such a success in Aberdeen, having maintained a client relationship there for 39 years.

Thanks to our early focus on the United Kingdom’s Oil and Gas Industry, we became one of the first shipping companies to establish a base in Aberdeen in 1974. Since then we have chosen to stay, focusing on maintaining a personal follow-up of valued and important customers. One of which is oil major Shell who has been working with us since 1977.

HOW DID THE COLLABORATION START?Our association with Shell started in 1977 when Edda Supply Ships AS had a number of vessels on the spot market in Aber-deen. We had two vessels, which Shell had hired on a number of occasions. Following this, the Edda Sprint commenced a term charter for five years in 1978 and Edda Sprite was delivered to

Shell in January 1979 for a three-year term. Since then we have had vessels continuously on term charter to Shell UK.

EVERYONE WINS This working relationship has been profitable and pleasurable for both parties. Our collaboration has been instrumental in making great progress over the years. A shared enthusiasm and a high focus on safety have been key drivers in continually im-proving the design and operation. This has enabled us to provide a continuous fleet of modern safe and efficient vessels operat-ed by highly qualified and motivated crews. Our future collab-oration with Shell depends on the market situation as well as whether we can deliver what Shell requires.

2015 marked a new beginning at the Aberdeen office. Following the retirement of Mrs Izzie Smith, after many years’ loyal service, Phil Brown took on the role of gen-eral manager. He will provide operational and HSEQ support to the company’s ves-sels. This currently includes Edda Frigg, Edda Fram, Edda Frende and Edda Ferd.

Phil started in the British Merchant Navy as a trainee deckhand in the 1980’s. After qualifying from Maritime College, he sailed on various types of vessels operating all over the world. Following his sea career

Phil came ashore and was heavily involved with various disciplines in marine training and assessment for the Oil and Gas plus the wider Merchant Marine industries.

Prior to joining Edda Supply Ships, an Østensjø Rederi company, in December 2014, Phil was employed as a Marine HSE Advisor on board flotels and platform supply vessels. “I am excited and looking forward to maintaining the good working relationship we have with our clients here in Aberdeen”, says Phil.

PREPARING FOR EMERGENCIES

Martin Paulsson, safety officer at Edda Fides, gives us a peek inside the safety drills conducted on board. “The weekly scenarios are planned in cooperation with vessel management and client. All drills are of course in compliance with SOLAS as well as Østensjø Rederi’s guidelines. Our aim is to make everyone confident with his or her role during an evacuation. That will save lives if a situation should occur”, says Paulsson.

“During our full-scale fire drills, well-trained emergency response teams perform search and rescue actions in smoke-filled areas. Rescued casualties are handed over to our qualified medical staff so they can practice their profession. Everyone involved always goes through a de-briefing to identify possible improvements or the need for additional training”, Paulsson continues.

“A drill scenario can be mustering of all personnel on board the respective survival crafts with a full demonstration of life saving appliances. It can also be a full abandonment of the vessel, from platform or rig connected to the vessel via the gangway. In such a drill, you need to evacuate up to 600 people”, says Paulsson.

Hver søndag gjennomføres beredskapsøvelser om bord på flotellet Edda Fides. Her øves det på å håndtere ulike hendelser som en håper ikke skal skje. Målet er at hver enkelt skal føle trygghet i sin rolle, noe som vil kunne redde liv i en reell situasjon. I øvelser med evakuering av arbeidere fra plattform som er tilkoblet skipet, kan opptil 600 personer være involvert.

“Under brannøvelsene foretar en veltrent nød-responsgruppe et søk, ofte i røykbelagte rom, hvor skadde blir brakt til kvalifiserte helsearbeidere. Alle deltakerne gjennomgår en samtale i ettertid for å identifisere forbedringer eller behov for mer trening“, forteller Martin Paulsson, som er sikkerhets- ansvarlig om bord.

HR Sandvold is a small Haugesund company with ten employees. They supply pipes, valves and ventilation to the shipping-, offshore- and manufacturing industry all over the world. The company, having over 60 years of experience, has benefited Østensjø Rederi for decades. Earlier this year, HR Sandvold made a large delivery to the multiple purpose vessel Edda Fjord in Galveston, Texas.

“The service we receive from Sandvold is always of the best quality. They are welcoming and do their utmost to find the products we need, always with the high quality we require. In addition to providing superior service, they hold a good price level”, says Chief Engineer Kevin Gorman, Edda Fjord.

William Vestbø, department manager at HR Sandvold tells us, “Discussing challenges early in the process makes it possible to agree upon solutions quickly with the suppliers. This saves the shipping companies as well as ourselves both time and errors connected to delivery.”

Building competency in an organization is not done in a jiffy. It is – and must be – an ongoing process for as long as the organization exists, and it requires daily focus. Our employees’ competency forms the basis of the kind of operations and services we can provide. Maritime laws and regu-lations change in accordance with new technology, knowledge of safety, the environment, and changes in society as a whole.

The result for the maritime industry are new requirements for training, personal certificates, safety measures, handling and maintenance of new equipment etc. Masters on board each vessel and office personnel make sure we comply with the requirements at all times. Making sure certificates and courses are valid is only one part of building competency in the organization. The terms training, drills, trainees and support can be used to cover all the competency work we do in the company. Let’s call them “the basis of the Østensjø Academy”:

1. TRAININGIn all positions and roles, people must meet certain requirements to be permitted to work. Without valid maritime certificates or relevant work

experience, you cannot be part of the vessels’ crew or service personnel. It is therefore crucial for the company to arrange for training in this regard to keep our vessels operable. In addition, specific training is necessary in order to operate certain kinds of equipment on board – equipment such as cranes and navigation systems.

Every assigned role also has a set of qualifications that needs to be met. Training may occur both ashore and on board and can be anything from online learning, courses at certified training facilities, in-house class-room sessions etc. In many occasions, the result is a diploma and or a certificate.

2. DRILLS AND EXERCISESDrills and exercises are performed regularly on board. These include safety drills, preparations for vessel specific operations, testing of equip-ment, teamwork and next level performance.

The learning process rely on feedback from colleagues and people in charge of the drill or exercise.

3. TRAINEESTo be able to recruit within our company, educating new seafarers is of great importance. Each year the company engages new apprentices and cadets for the engine, and deck department. Our marine crew is our main resource in preparing the trainees for the trade they have chosen as their profession. They do a remarkable job to carry forward good craftsman-ship and the Østensjø Rederi spirit and standards.

All trainees get their own designated instructor on board to help guide them through the set curriculum and help them familiarise with life away from home.

When Edda Fram proudly sailed into the market in 2007, she set the standard for future platform supply vessels. Two years later, shaped in the same mould, Edda Frende followed in her footsteps – or should we say wake? Although they have their differences, they tend to hang out in the same places. Since they entered the market they have been working for Shell. Meet the sisters Edda Fram and Edda Frende.

BLI KJENT MED OFFSHORESØSTRENE Edda Fram satte standarden for fremtidige forsyningsskip da hun entret markedet i 2007. To år senere ble Edda Frende bygget etter samme støpeform. På tross av sine forskjeller har de en tendens til å oppholde seg på samme sted. Siden de entret markedet, har de begge jobbet for Shell.

Søstrene kommer fra en nyskapende familie med en lang merittliste. Forventningene til deres innovative egenskaper var derfor høy allerede før ferdigstilling. De skuffet ikke. Edda Fram videreførte en god del av familiens innovasjoner. Her kan sikkerhetstiltak for mannskapet på dekk nevnes ved høye skutesider og slangemottaker. Nye løsninger ble også introdusert. Som verdenes første plattformforsyningsskip innførte Edda Fram faktisk Voith Schneider-propeller med bevegelsesdemping, egne tanker for borestøv, magnetdrevet sidepropell og ekstra høy standard for mannskapet.

SØSKENRIVALISERINGFor å kunne konkurrere med storesøster inkorporerte Edda Frende alt det storesøster entret markedet med. I tillegg kunne hun by på noen overraskelser. Hun ble rederiets første PSV som benyttet urinstoff (urea) for å redusere NOX-utslipp. I tillegg hadde hun forberedt seg slik at montering av oljeoppsamlingsutstyr kunne gjennomføres enkelt.

UTSEENDET ER VIKTIGFor å sørge for at de blir godt stelt med tar søstrene hvert år imot opplæringsstillinger. I detalj får disse opplæring i å håndtere søstrenes sprell og humør. På denne måten sikrer søstrene at de blir godt ivaretatt i frem-tiden. Selv om inntaket av ferskinger baserer seg på et egosentrisk tankesett, skal søstrene ha takk for innsatsen de gjør for fremtidige sjøfolk. Så langt er det ingen i familien som tar inn flere opplæringsstillinger enn disse to spreke damene.

Edda Fram comes from an inventive family with a long list of world firsts. The anticipation of her bringing something new to the marked was therefore present prior to her arrival. She did not disappoint. Edda Fram became the first platform supply vessel in the world to install:

• Voith Schneider propeller with a roll-reduction systemThis enables her to perform better during bad weather, as the propeller is exceptional at keeping the position. The roll-reduction system keeps the vessel steadier as it reduces the impact of the waves.

• Dedicated drill cutting tanksAllows drill-cuttings to be brought back to shore instead of being dumped at sea. This has a positive impact on the marine environment.

• Rim thruster A thruster using magnetic power. The compact unit requires less maintenance and less space. This allows it to be placed differently than other types, resulting in it working more efficiently. It is also quiet.

• High comfort class for crewHigh standard of comfort enables the crew to better focus on their operational tasks.

SISTERLY COMPETITIONWhen the second sister arrived, she had incorporated all of her sister’s finer points. However, in order to keep up in the sisterly competition that exists among siblings, Edda Frende brought some surprises along as well:

• First PSV in our company to use urea to reduce NOX emissionsUrea, water and high temperature converts the NOX gasses into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. This reduces emissions into air.

• Prepared for oil recoveryKeeps her prepared in case of oil pollution alerts. A quick response will reduce the environmental impact.

BRINGING FAMILY TRADITIONS FORWARDTo acknowledge her family’s innovations, Edda Fram continued with the following successes:

• High sidesToday this is industry standard, but Edda Fram’s family was the first shipping company in the world to introduce this on platform supply vessels back in 1975. This improves the working conditions for the crew and ensure their safety.

• Vent under the water lineReduces emissions of dust to the air. First introduced by her family in 1987.

• Clean class

In order to reduce spills in case of a collision, no oil-filled tanks are placed on the outer sides of the hull. Water and ballast-water tanks create an outer safety barrier.

• Dedicated methanol tanks with nitrogen inertsTo enable transportation of methanol to rigs, separate tanks were installed. Nowadays that is common on this type of vessels.

• Hose catcher A metal rod that clinches the hose to the side of the vessel to keep it from moving around on deck. This increases safety for the deck crew when handling oil-, water-, fuel- or mud tubes.

KEEPING UP APPEARANCESThe sisters like to be pampered. To ensure that there are people around to understand their exact needs, they welcome apprentices and cadets on board in order to teach them exactly how they like to be treated. No one in the family takes on as many trainees as the sisters. Even though driven by selfishness, they still provide much needed practice experience for our future crew. So – as the kids say – “Cred!”.

Why the maritime industry? My father is a mariner. He inspired me.

What is your biggest accomplishment? Receiving my navigation certificate and becoming a second officer.

What is your favorite vessel? I like all the vessels I have worked on. Very nice people and a good working environment in every one of them.

PÅL FREDRIK HJELMELAND – Master “Edda Fjord”

What is your perfect day? A day filled with good news!

Why the maritime industry? My family inspired me. I have always wanted to become a mariner.

What makes a good work environment? A positive tone and a nice atmosphere among colleagues.

BJÖRN RICHTER – Second Engineer “Edda Fonn”

What is your perfect day? Waking up with my two kids and fiancée! A long breakfast. Outdoor family activities such as hiking, boating, bathing, depending on the season. Good dinner cooked together with family and friends, and a muddy obstacle course race training session.

Biggest accomplishment at work?I cannot pinpoint one single accomplishment, but I do hope my colleagues appreciate my designing and fabricating skills plus my ambition to maintain a good and happy working environment on board.

What is your favorite vessel? Edda Fonn! A very well maintained vessel with everything you can ask for! Nice accommodation areas, very good working environment for me as an engineer, multi-purpose skills resulting in many different types of contracts, awesome food and wonderful colleagues!

Why the maritime industry? To learn new things. It was different and new from what I had done before. I have never regretted choosing it.

What makes a good work environment? Good leadership. A company that cares about you. Happy crew, happy ship.

What is your favorite vessel? Edda Fides, of course. She is my first and so far only vessel in the Østensjø Rederi fleet.

JOHN EINAR EDVARDSEN – Technical Superintendent Edda Accommodation

What was your first on board experience? I was homesick as I was six months on the sea and was only 16 years old. I wanted to go home to my mom.

Why maritime industry? Both my dad and grandfather worked in the maritime industry, so I guess they influenced me.

Favorite vessel? Edda Fram (II). I was there for almost eight years. The crew was great. And the vessel has top equipment.

ALMOST THEREEDDA FORTIS:

A site team of 16 persons is currently working in Korea to complete the largest vessel in our company’s history. The completion of this complex project will provide our company, not to mention our customers, with yet another high standard purpose-built ship.

Arbeidet på Edda Fortis er inne i siste fase. Hele 16 personer er nå til stede i Korea for å ferdigstille det til nå største skipet i selskapets flåte. Når skipet er ferdig, vil markedet bli tilført enda et spesialbygd flotell av høy kvalitet.

Det er stor aktivitet på verftet nå som siste hånd på verket legges. De siste lugarene settes på plass, mens de andre ferdigstilles. I restauranten, byssa, kontorene og på broen gjenstår nå kun små detal-jer som skal på plass før disse avdelingene er ferdige. På dekk fungerer kraner som de skal og det samme gjelder alt sikkerhetsutstyr. Malingsarbeidet kan derimot ta litt tid ennå grunnet skipets størrelse. Skipet er forsinket, men når det ferdigstilles, vil vi med glede og stolthet kunne presentere det vi me-ner er det perfekte flotell.

Edda Fortis is near completion. She is 154.9 meter long and 32.2 meter wide. Making her the largest vessel in our company’s history. Expected delivery in early 2016.

Hectic work is ongoing at the Hyundai Heavy Industries yard. As cabins in some areas are being installed, others are being decorated and made ready for their first guests to arrive. When finished, the vessel will provide high standard accommodation for 800 people.

INDOORThe restaurant, galley, cinema and office areas are undergoing their finishing touches as well. It is not long before the chefs can serve wonderful cuisine in the beautiful restaurant on the fifth deck.

THE BRIDGE The bridge equipment is already in working order, but there is still some minor interior-work left in order to complete the bridge to our high standard.

Additional resources are provided by the yard to ensure that the heating-, venting- and cooling system (HVAC) on board can be ticked off as completed soon. The paintwork might still take some time. Due to the vessel’s size, this is a time consuming task.

DECK On deck, all offshore cranes are commissioned and working as intended, as are all lifeboats, rescue boats and the life raft system (MES). Safety is of the highest importance and it is cru-cial that everything is in order in that regard. The project is delayed, but when finished, we will be proud to present what we believe is the perfect accommodation vessel.

What would you have said if someone asked your permission to use a photo from your private collection on a 15 meter long wall? Michal Aase said yes.

SUPPORTING THE DALE OEN EXPERIENCE

The idea to found The Dale Oen Experience was created by the Norwegian Olympic swimmer Alexander Dale Oen and his brother Robin Dale Oen. They wished to inspire children and youth to challenge themselves, identify their own capacity and realize their own worth. The organisation believes that conquering physical activities is key to becoming who you really are.

The two brothers meant to launch the idea right after the London Olympics in 2012, but when Alexander suddenly passed away, the launch was postponed. To honour their common goal, Robin decided to continue the process on his own.

Our vessel T/B Ajax replaced its man overboard boat this summer. As the old one was still still in working order, a decision was made to donate it to The Dale Oen Experience.

Born in Haugesund, where our main office is located, Michal now lives in Karasjok in the northern part of Norway.

Every time he visits Haugesund, he takes pictures of his beloved hometown. Recently, one of his photographies was printed in a local newspaper to our delight. Why? Because it

solved our difficult task of decorating a 15 meter long glass wall on board the Edda Fortis.

The picture, which actually consisting of 36 photos put together with great accuracy, displays a panoramic view of the city’s quay. Just perfect for us! We contacted Michal and asked for his permission to use the picture.

Michal, a former sailor, immediately said yes, only proud that his picture will decorate Østensjø Rederi’s largest vessel ever. The picture will be printed onto plastic film and placed on a glass wall in the multi lounge. If you are ever on board, please take the time to check it out. Perhaps you can locate our main office in it?
