Making the most of Careers Fairs

A chance to impress or get some pens?

A Careers Fair is a unique opportunity to meet lots of employers in one place. Making the most of it means you have to know why you are attending, have a plan of action and be prepared. Do you want to find out more about what the jobs actually involve? Are you interested in hearing about the working culture/environment? Would you like to practise speaking to employers to build your confidence for later job searching? All of those are possible, but each requires preparation. Spending some time in preparation will help you feel relaxed and confident on the day - which is a whole lot more impressive to employers than wandering around looking bemused!

Preparing for the Fair

A week or so before the Fair, check the Careers Centre website for a list of Exhibitors and make a list of the top 6 –8 you definitely want to meet.

Look at the recruitment section of the websites of your top 6-8, so you are well informed on the day. Prepare a list of questions you want to ask. The specific questions will depend on why you are attending

the Fair and what y our research has already told you. We’ve made a few suggestions – please read on.

At the Fair

Be sure to dress smartly, so you give a good impression. Try to arrive at least one hour before the Fair is due to finish. The earlier the better as, towards the end, fairs can get very busy and you may miss the chance to speak to a popular employer you are really interested in.

Pick up a floor plan and identify the location of the Exhibitors you plan to visit. Approach Exhibitors with a smile, firm handshake and positive attitude. Remember to introduce

yourself and ask them your questions. Bear in mind the people you meet at the Fair are likely to be part of the recruitment team, so you might meet them again if you apply. There might also be recent graduates from St Andrews or elsewhere, giving you a chance to speak to someone actually doing the job. Make a note of who you speak to and refer to them in any application.

Keep an open mind. Speak to Exhibitors who are not in your top 6-8 to see how they compare and whether or not there are any interesting opportunities for you.

Page 4: 2015 Law Fair Guide
Page 5: 2015 Law Fair Guide

After the Fair

Review the information you have collected and add it to your career search folder. Make a note of any application deadlines in your calendar and add any other tasks you need to your

action plan, for example tailoring your CV and practising interview techniques. Visit the Careers Centre, either online or in person for help in furthering your career search and

preparing applications and interviews.

Knowing what to say when approaching Exhibitors at a Fair can be a bit nerve wracking.

Working out in advance what you want to find out will help you feel and behave more confidently

A good strategy is to begin by saying something you know about the firm, after first introducing yourself, and before

you ask a question eg “I know you have a number of international offices and that appeals to me as I want an

international career”

Questions you might ask about the job

What are the main responsibilities? What do you actually

do in a week? What kind of work do trainees do in your

firm?

What do you enjoy most about your work? What do you enjoy least aboutyour work?

What kinds of problems and challenges do you have

to deal with? What special skills do you use?

How will my performance be reviewed?

What opportunities are there for career progression?

Questions you might ask about the firm

What makes the experience of working in your firm different from working at your competitors?

Could you describe your firm’s culture and the type of employeewho fits in well?

What do people like most / least about working for your firm?

Questions you might ask

What do the strongest applicants

get right? What top tips would you

give me?

What’s the main reason candidates are unsuccessful?

Personal qualities are just as important. You need to be happy collaborating with a team yet capable of, and used to, independent action. You will need to demonstrate an ability and desire for lateral thinking, be capable of close attention to detail, and have the energy, resilience and ambition to succeed in a top global law firm.

Travers Smith LLPTravers Smith is an award-winning independent City law firm with a reputation for enterprising thinking and uncompromising quality in all of its chosen fields, and a focus on advising clients on international matters. Competing directly with the largest City firms, we attract top-quality work but still offer a professional yet relaxed working environment providing the best of both worlds.

It is this environment that has led to one of the highest staff retention rates in the City. A very high proportion of our work has an international dimension and we accompany our clients to every corner of the globe. To do that, we have developed close ties with carefully chosen lawyers within overseas independent law firms who share our specialist strengths and demanding standards for quality.

The firm’s comprehensive training programme ensures that trainees experience a broad range of work. All trainee solicitors sit with partners and associates, which ensures a refreshing lack of hierarchy. It also means that trainees receive individual and extensive training from experienced lawyers, and can look forward to client contact, and the responsibility that goes with it, from day one.

During the vacation scheme, students spend two weeks with the firm; each week they are able to experience a different department, sharing an office with partners, associates and trainee solicitors. The workload includes attending meetings, drafting documents and letters and carrying out research. We extend our internal seminar programme to include a number of talks, case studies and negotiating exercises specifically for students to give an authentic taste of a City lawyer's work. The timetable also includes a 'City tour', plenty of sporting and social activities such as softball and mixed hockey, 'working' lunches and informal evening events.

OPPORTUNITIES:

Christmas vacation scheme 2015: There are 15 places for the two week scheme running from 7 to 18 December 2015

- places are allocated on a rolling basis so there is no deadline.

Summer vacation scheme 2016: There are 15 places for each two week scheme commencing 20 June, 4 July and 18July 2016 - deadline is 31 January 2016

Training Contracts 2018: We offer 25 training contracts for September 2018/March 2019 - deadline is 31 July 2016

The Summer scheme is designed primarily for law graduates and penultimate year law undergraduates, whereas the Christmas scheme is primarily for non-law graduates and final year non-law undergraduates.

The firm looks for people who combine academic excellence with common sense; those who are determined and articulate, can think on their feet and take their work but not themselves seriously. Applications are welcome from law and non-law graduates.

Our minimum criteria is AAB at A level (excluding General Studies) and a 2:1 degree if graduated.

University of St Andrews Law & Mooting SocietyThe University of St Andrews Law Society is open to all students of the University who want to learn more or pursue a career in law.

While the University of St Andrews does not have a law faculty, we are there to fill the void. Our dedicated committee works together with our incredible sponsors to link the University of St Andrews and the larger legal community. Every semester we invite speakers, organise trips, hold socials, and provide support for undergraduates. Members of the society come from all over the world and from all tracks of life, but are united by a common interest in the law.

MootingThe Law Society has a tremendously intelligent and dedicated mooting team; this has led us to some spectacular victories against prestigious universities, including Bristol and Oxford. To find out what mooting is, please read our informative introduction below.

So you want to moot?Moots are competitive mock trials used to prepare trainee lawyers for the atmosphere of a court. They are abrilliant tool to improve presentation, communication and speaking skills, and heighten your ability to produce and defend complex arguments. They are similar to debates, but the focus of a moot is much more on using analytical skills to build and defend arguments based on facts and legal precedents.

Mooting at St AndrewsMooting at St Andrews is the only mooting team without the benefit and assistance of a law faculty or law library, which makes mooting with us a much more hands on experience than you would find anywhere else.

Mooting is typically done in pairs, with a junior and senior speaker (counsel) working together against their opponents. You will be given as much opportunity as possible to practice mooting through weekly training sessions, as well as pub nights, team dinners and other events.
