I am excited to share the enhancements in student experience, advancements in our research agenda and some of the community outreach initiatives delivered in the past year as a result of this group of engaged leaders.
As I look at the list of Haskayne Founders’ Circle members, I am inspired by the number of individuals supporting the school and their unique stories. To our generous donors – you are some of the school’s greatest champions. There are as many different reasons for becoming a Haskayne Founders’ Circle member as there are members; the common element that each of you have is a commitment to supporting business education and the vision of the Haskayne School of Business. On behalf our Haskayne family—faculty, staff, alumni and students—I thank you.
I encourage each of you to engage further with our community – to help spark the minds of the next generation of business leaders. Throughout these pages, we have highlighted ways you can be a part of the exciting initiatives at Haskayne and I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events.
Sincerely,
Jim Dewald, PhD

The Haskayne School of Business:Advancing business leadership since 1967
“I have been so impressed by the achievements of the Haskayne Founders’ Circle and by those who are now a part of the circle. When I attend Haskayne Founders’ Circle events, I am moved to see how many people also subscribe to my belief that it is better to give than receive. I am honoured to have this generous group carry my name and to be a part of the Haskayne Founders’ Circle, furthering business education in Calgary.”
- Richard (Dick) Haskayne, OC, AOE, FCA
Member, Haskayne Founders’ Circle
The Haskayne legacy was cemented in 2002 when the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Management was renamed the Haskayne School of Business following Dick Haskayne’s transformative gift, which has grown to be one of the University of Calgary's largest endownments. Dick Haskayne’s support of our school is game-changing. The stable funding provided by his endowment allows the school to advance research and attract top scholars and students. Dick Haskayne provided the essential seed funding that launched the Global Energy Executive MBA program and is a contributing member of the Haskayne Founders’ Circle. His continued generosity is felt in every corner of our school and by every student, graduate and stakeholder.

Haskayne Founders’ Circle members create a legacy for students Many Haskayne Founders’ Circle members have chosen to support student awards. To date, over $834,000 in gifts and pledges from members have funded or established new scholarships and bursaries at the Haskayne School of Business. These awards provide needed support to students, easing fi nancial stresses and allowing them to focus on their studies. Student awards offer the opportunity to make a more personal gift by allowing donors to select the criteria and name of the award, with many donors choosing to create a lasting legacy by honouring the memory of a loved one.
Haskayne Founders’ Circle Scholarship Endowment Fund Thanks to the generous gifts and pledges from Haskayne Founders’ Circle members, we have now endowed an undergraduate and graduate scholarship at the school. This means that gifts from the Haskayne Founders’ Circle will continue to give in perpetuity. The fi rst ever recipients were selected in 2014: Lilian Liu, BComm student, and Heather Hirst, MBA student. As of summer 2015, the Haskayne Founders’ Circle Scholarship Endowment Fund is at $195,000 in gifts and pledges and continues to grow – providing a stable source of funding to support future Haskayne students.
“As a second-year commerce student, this award has motivated me to continue my involvement in student leadership and community service, and pursue academic endeavors beyond the classroom, including competing in the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition. I am very humbled to be a recipient of the Haskayne Founders’ Circle Scholarship this year.”

Enriching the student experienceSupporting access, inspiring excellence and providing innovative
educational environments are all part of the vision of the student experience
at the University of Calgary and at the Haskayne School of Business.
The Haskayne Founders’ Circle has supported this vision with investments
in scholarships and the Student Experiences Fund, o ering global study
opportunities that provide a new approach to teaching and learning.

A day of discovery for fi nance students A group of Haskayne School of Business students and faculty travelled to New York City to visit eight exceptional alumni who have made a name for themselves in fi nance. The meetings ranged from casual lunches and Q and A sessions to a New York Stock Exchange tour. The students, who received travel support from the Haskayne Student Experiences Fund, achieved insight into where they can aspire to take their careers.
International excellence at the Hult Prize competitionThe Hult Prize is an opportunity for social entrepreneurs to develop ideas to make big change in the world. The winners receive $1 million in seed capital and mentorship to implement their innovative solution. In 2015, the mission of the Hult Prize is to educate 10 million children in urban slums around the world by 2020. The Haskayne Student Experiences Fund supported travel for the 2015 Haskayne Hult Prize competition team, fi ve highly motivated women from a variety of educational backgrounds. The team fi nished among the top 30 worldwide out of a record 20,000 applications for the competition.

Invest in a named trading station within the N. Murray Edwards Trading
and Finance Lab and become a Haskayne Founders’ Circle member.
Inter-Collegiate Business Competition: 37 years strong1978 was a year that saw signifi cant fi rsts: the fi rst "micro on a chip" was patented by Texas Instruments, Velcro was fi rst put on the market and University of Calgary business students competed in their fi rst annual Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC) led by professor and coach Dr. Bob Schulz. Haskayne has now amassed 84 national championships at this elite competition, far more than any other university, confi rming a legacy of winning that spans four decades.
Maintaining this winning legacy was the stimulus for the development of the Haskayne Founders’ Circle – creating a priority fund to provide fi ve years of fi nancial support to hire and mentor a candidate to succeed Dr. Bob Schulz, ICBC team coach since 1978. The search for the right candidate has renewed and continues to be a priority for Haskayne. The Dr. Bob Schulz Business Competition Succession Fund has been successfully established thanks to the generosity of Haskayne Founders’ Circle members. With this fund in place, the school is well positioned to implement a succession plan and maintain this winning legacy.
Rotman International Trading Competition: A new legacy beginsThe N. Murray Edwards Trading and Finance Lab was established at Haskayne in 2011, one year later the fi rst team went to the Rotman International Trading Competition in Toronto. Teams from Haskayne have placed better each year. The 2015 team placed 4th out of 50 teams, competing alongside top schools such as MIT, Cornell, Princeton, Duke, Berkeley, University of Toronto and McGill. Considering the short history of the N. Murray Edwards Trading and Finance Lab compared to the fi nance programs at these well-established institutions, the achievements of Haskayne teams are even more signifi cant.
To maintain our winning legacy against top business schools in other fi nancial centres, continued investmentis required. Contribute to the Haskayne Capital Enhancements Fund to invest in a named trading station in the N. Murray Edwards Trading and Finance Lab.

Investing in researchLeading in research and knowledge creation is one of our key goals within
the University of Calgary’s Eyes High vision and at the Haskayne School of
Business. The Haskayne Founders’ Circle has invested in this vision through
PhD student support, which is essential to a strong research program.
PhD Entrance Scholarships A strong PhD program needs to attract the brightest students. Four $15,000 scholarships, funded by the Haskayne Founders’ Circle, have signifi cantly increased our ability to recruit talented PhD students. The path to a PhD is not easy, and the support provided by the Haskayne Strategic Plan Fund helps fuel students’ educational achievements and provides motivation to continue.
Receiving this award encourages me and makes me feel that the Haskayne School of Business really cares about PhD students. I talk about the award with my prior classmates who also want to apply for a PhD program. They said this award is very attractive for them, and also affects their decision to apply.”
PhD Summer Research Grants Haskayne offers a Summer Research Project/Research Development course to enhance research skills and academic preparedness of our PhD candidates. Students develop a research project, compose a research manuscript and communicate the project to an academic audience. The top two students received $5,000 each, with the other nine students receiving $1,000 each. This course and funding from the Haskayne Strategic Plan Fund builds a strong foundation for Haskayne PhD students, setting them on a path to success. The Haskayne Strategic Plan Fund also supported 14 students to attend nine different conferences, offering additional opportunities for learning and collaboration.

On May 5, 2015, Dr. Robert Thirsk, University of Calgary chancellor, Canadian astronaut and proud University of Calgary alumnus shared his experiences in orbit as well as exclusive photos of our home planet from the unique perspective of the International Space Station. Dr. Thirsk also highlighted innovations that were test-driven in space and are now changing lives on earth. One example, the Neuroarm, was developed by a University of Calgary researcher and is based on Canadarm II technology. The Neuroarm performs intricate brain surgeries and is saving lives right here in Alberta.
Creating community connectionsThe Haskayne Founders’ Circle o ers the opportunity to engage with
other members to create an active community of support for the school.
