Admission Calendar 2015-16 Back Cover

Page 3: 2015 Graduation Trinity

The four-year cycle of each class covers a range of experiences; in many ways, it actually begins

during their 8th grade visit and application period, extending into the first year of college or work.

We count on students coming back after graduation to fill us in on how they are doing, what worked

for them here, and what they have come to appreciate. For the Class of ’15, looking back to 2010 is

to see a time of unexpected change; the Ursuline closure announcement of November 9th caused

significant and permanent realignment. Instead of two incoming classes at two schools with set

traditions, they became the first incoming co-ed class of one school, the pioneers of a new era.

For many families, the change made explicit something they saw as implicit. As a CN grad of ’77, I

felt that our class had become one over the four years together, a CN-Ursuline combination, so I

was hopeful that our new model would match what I knew was true for many graduates from the

two schools. An early indication that things would be ok was a text my younger son, who would be

an entering freshman, sent me the day after the news broke, “Don’t worry Dad, I told all the girls that things will be alright and that

everyone will be welcome.” Sometimes prophets are found in unusual ways. Now as we wrap up this school year, celebrate their

achievements and graduation, we can conclude that they have been a remarkable, groundbreaking group, who have lived out their

opportunity together, and provided support for each other often.

There is also for me, like other parents, an end of an era experienced in this graduating class.  After having had a student first arrive

in 2006 and the second finishing now, my time as a parent here is ended; just another emeritus parent, able to go to the Dad’s

Club, see old friends, catch up on the adventures of others, wait for the growth into new family units and grandchildren. I will miss

the added contact with students that having your own student provides. Some of these graduates have been in school with my son

since kindergarten, their growth remarkable over 13 years. No one will be swinging by our house, sharing dinner, getting ready to

go out, sharing stories of events attended, acting far more polite than their parents think they are, as I hope my son has been doing

so elsewhere. Having had more time with students outside of school the past nine years has made me a better teacher, given me

a different insight into the rest of their days and nights. The new phase for me will be hearing from my sons as college students, as

one begins and the other leaves the Marine Corps to go to school. After years of helping prepare students for college, working with

ones in college, and hiring graduates to come teach, I look forward to a new role. Luckily, I know current juniors and sophomores

as my son’s friends, so I will ease out of my parent side gently. I also am not the only one feeling this separation, as there are six of

our faculty and staff who have graduates this year, the highest number in a single year. Perhaps that was useful in our first combined

class, because we were all in it together.

For the coming year, the growth has already begun. The science building construction has started. The Academic Support Center

has a classroom and a Director has been hired. Technology will be served by a newly-hired Assistant Principal who will work with our

other two APs to help push our WCEA/WASC goals forward. Wiring and routing has begun for the increase in WiFi to serve the many

devices that will be brought next year; SCOE confirmed an increase in our service to power the devices already. While we finish the

current year, much has been done for next year; just as summer school is around the corner from now, likely August will be here

sooner than some think, until we hope students enjoy the rest of their break.

PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING

JULY 2015 • TRINITY MAGAZINE 3

Page 4: 2015 Graduation Trinity

Our 50th anniversary year has been exciting and momentous for the Cardinal Newman High School

community. We have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating our history, heritage in the Santa Rosa Diocese,

and the many accomplishments of our school in the company of our alumni and friends who made it all

happen. We look forward to the next 50 years and the important mark we are making on the lives of

our students, today and in the years to come.

Perhaps the most significant celebration in May of this year was the start of construction for our new

state-of-the-art Science Building. As I write to you today, amidst the excavators and bulldozers, survey,

excavation, and building, pad preparations are well in place. Over the course of the next three months

a beautiful new building containing exciting learning environments for physics, biology and chemistry

classes will come to fruition. This is our first opportunity to build a facility, which will stand as a symbol

of advancing the start of our 21st century science program goals. Students returning in the fall of 2015 will take advantage of new

courses in Astronomy, Principles of Engineering and Computer Technology.

We remain most grateful to the Ernest L. and Ruth W. Finley Foundation for their extraordinary support and lead gift of two million

dollars for the construction of the Science Building. We look forward to sending you more updates on our groundbreaking ceremony

and plans for the blessing of our new building soon.

Planning is well underway for the 1:1 technology program allowing for all students, faculty and staff to bring their own devices for

classroom learning and teaching in August 2015. The 1:1 program will ensure that our academic program is infused with student-

centered instruction complemented by technology tools that help our students create, communicate and discover.

The Academic Support Center will also open in August with the mission of providing academic support, which includes helping

students to become self-advocates, while discovering and utilizing the services that will aid them in their education at Cardinal

Newman and beyond.

Finally, we have launched our new admission materials and branding message, Touching Hearts and Wining Minds. John Henry

Cardinal Newman spoke of the need to teach, inspire and cultivate an excitement to grow in faith, learning and service. This message

is now ingeniously described in our invitation to future students and families to Be A Part Of our family, community and 50 years of a

rich Catholic education tradition at Cardinal Newman.

Thank you for all you do to support the value and mission of a Cardinal Newman High School education.

BACCALAUREATE MASS

The Baccalaureate Mass took place on Thursday, May 21, 2015, at St. Joseph

Catholic Church in Cotati. Fr. Raul Lemus served as the principal celebrant

and Fr. Moses Brown as the concelebrant. The Class of 2015 was beautifully-

dressed in graduation gowns and the church was filled to capacity with

relatives and friends.

The first reading was from the Book of Ecclesiastes (3:1-15) that speaks

about everything having an appropriate time. For example, “A time to be

born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot; a time to kill

and a time to heal.” The Gospel was John 15:12-17 where Jesus gives us the

commandment to love one another as he loves us.

The homily reminded the class of our universal call to holiness, and Catholic

author and speaker, Matthew Kelly’s fundamental principle “Become

the Best Version of Ourselves” became the theme. Fr. Raul spoke about

Matthew Kelly’s book Rediscover Catholicism where he mentions three

flawed philosophies that our culture has been built on: individualism,

hedonism and minimalism. Finally, an antidote to those three philosophies

was given using a prayer that Blessed Cardinal Newman wrote titled The

Mission of My Life and questioned students by asking, “God will call on you.

Will you hear the Lord?”

God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments. Therefore, I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him, In perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about.

SWIMMING The 2015 swim season ended at the league championships on May 8th and

9th. The men’s team had only eight swimmers on the team and managed

to take second in league this year which is quite an accomplishment. The

women’s team grew in size this year with many new additions to the team and

swam well against a lot of hard competition. The seniors’ leadership and hard

work will be missed next year, especially Gino Tarantino who took two first

places at League this year.

MEN’S VARSITY TENNIS The Cardinal Newman Men’s Varsity Tennis team had one of the most successful years in the past 20 years of CNHS varsity tennis!

SPRING SPORTS 2015

The Cardinals finished 21-5 overall and 13-1 in

league earning another NBL Championship. The

team lost in the quarterfinals of NCS competition

in a hard-fought match vs. Branson High School.

Freshman standout Alejandro Serrano Osoba from

Spain led the team by losing only two matches the

entire season. Other strong singles players were

Connery Gschwend, Tom Broffman and Bradley

King.

Doubles were led by John Paul Destruel,

Chris Buse’, Cole Henry, and Trevin Anderson-

Soria. Number three doubles of seniors Cutler

Price and Chris Urasaki went undefeated in league

and were key wins in some of our victories.

Individually, the Cardinals were very

successful. Connery Gschwend and Tom Broffman

teamed up to win NCS Doubles this year. Alejandro

earned second in NCS Singles. Many of our

players earned All-League honors. The Cardinals

look to build on the success from this year and

look forward to the Spring of 2016!

JV MEN’S LACROSSE The JV Men’s Lacrosse team came a long way

during the 2015 season. The Cardinals started the

season with a ton of work to do and the players did

everything the coaching staff asked of them. The

season started off with a low-scoring win against

Terra Linda where the boys did everything well,

including hitting the goal, just not the net. The next

few games were against very strong opponents

in Justin Siena, Marin Catholic, and Piedmont. The

team played good lacrosse in all three games but

were physically outmatched, which happens when

a team is 90% freshmen. Even though those were

tough losses, no one quit. Despite insurmountable

deficits, every player gave the same effort in the

fourth quarters of those games as in the first, a true

indicator of the team’s character. The hard work

finally paid off with two awesome wins against

Rancho Cotate to end the season, capped by a

seismic “Newman!” chant led by Nicholas Scrivan-

ich. It was a fitting end to an outstanding season.

VARSITY MEN’S LACROSSE The Cardinal Newman Men’s Lacrosse team en-

joyed their first season playing in the newly-formed

NBL lacrosse league. Season highlights included

two regular season wins over Windsor and Rancho

including a dramatic overtime win against Rancho.

The Boys also made it to the first league champion-

ship game ever by beating Casa in the semi’s 12-11.

Seniors Pat Evans and Shane Bruno both earned

the honor of First Team All-League Defense and Jr.

Spencer Almy earned First Team All-League goalie.

With only five graduating seniors the team looks to

follow-up their first season in the NBL competing

for the league pennant.

WOMEN’S JV LACROSSE The Cardinal Newman Women’s JV Lacrosse team had a great season!  Many

of the NBL schools were unable to field JV teams, so the girls didn’t have

many games to compete in, but they had two exciting wins over MCAL teams,

Redwood and Marin Catholic!   The whole team, along with co-captains

Aislinn Zimmer and Katy Dell’Era, worked hard and had fun! The future of CN

Women’s Lacrosse looks bright!

WOMEN’S VARSITY LACROSSE Spring 2015 was a season of firsts for Cardinal Newman Women’s Lacrosse.

The varsity lacrosse women went undefeated in the North Bay League’s

inaugural lacrosse season. Windsor, Sonoma Academy, Rancho Cotate, Casa

Grande, and Petaluma vied for the pennant. At Newman, we had 21 students

make the varsity team and fielded the first junior varsity women’s lacrosse

team with 16 students. The varsity Co-Captains were Maddie Wilson and

Celine Gallo. The Cardinals were led by 5 seniors: Alex Dennen, Tori Dove,

Jordan Foster, Celine Gallo and Maddie Wilson. We had an impressive six

students selected to the all-league teams!

Kasey Braun, Kathleen Hanley and Caroline Olsen were selected to

compete in the National Tournament representing the Pacific Nor-Cal team

in Pennsylvania over Memorial Day weekend at the NCAA Championships.

From the outset our goal was simple - we wanted the first league pennant

for women’s lacrosse in the NBL to hang on campus and we did it thanks to

everyone who gave us their best.

The coaches would like to thank the students, parents, faculty and staff for

their support throughout the season. We look forward to another great season

next year.

JV BASEBALL The 2015 Cardinal Newman JV Baseball team

completed their season with an 18-6 record and

were 12-2 in league play, making them NBL JV

Champions. After starting the season 1-4, the team

went on a 12-game winning streak, and finished

17-2 in their last 19 games. Of their 6 losses, 4 were

by a single run. This was a very competitive group

who were led by a trio of starting pitchers Matt

Matulaitis, Drew Oliver and Ryan O’Hara. Catcher

Mikey Daly was a leader behind the plate and on

offense. Jake Hernandez was also a standout in

centerfield before being brought up to varsity.

The team ERA was 2.188, only giving up 50 earned

runs in 24 games. The team scored 174 runs in

those 24 games while batting a collective .314.

Congratulations to the coaches and players on

their winning season!

FRESHMAN BASEBALL The 2015 Cardinal Newman Freshman Baseball team completed their winning

season with a 16-6-1 record. There were a number of highlights during the

season, including winning their bracket in the weeklong Monte Vista High

Easter Tournament in Danville, and shutting down the perennial powerful

San Ramon Valley High Baseball team at their place.

These players have a bright future. As they get to know each other and

build team chemistry, they are going to make some noise in North Bay

League baseball!

VARSITY BASEBALL This season was an outstanding one ending in tough fashion, but the journey

was one to remember! The varsity baseball team ended the season with a

21-6 record and finished second in the NBL with an 11-3 record. The Cardinals

faced many challenges on and off the field as the team had to overcome

travel issues in Arizona and a bomb threat on game day at home, to name a

couple. The team’s resilience paid off as their internal drive and heart allowed

them to carry their strength onto the field and win some very tough games.

The team ended the league season with an 8-inning win over Maria Carrillo,

a 10-inning win over Maria Carrillo, and then knocked off Casa Grande in the

league tournament Championship, 2-0. The team grinded and fought all year

and never gave up when behind. Runs did not come easy, but quality pitching

and great defense kept the Cardinals in the game. Our pitching was led by

seniors Cal Clamar, Michael Clark, and Juniors Connor Foster and Gavin

Williams.

Other than going 3-0 against Maria Carrillo, CN went 3-1 in Arizona, and had

quality wins over Alameda, Monte Vista, and Pinole Valley in the preseason.

A number of players received All-League Honors. We will miss this

tremendous group of seniors.  They gave us so much on and off the field.

Not only were they excellent teammates, but they are outstanding people.

MEN’S VARSITY GOLF The 2015 season was a rebuilding year for the Cardinal golfers with an injury

to last year’s #2 player in the NBL, Eric Bolander, keeping him out of action

for the last 3/4 of the season. Newcomers Jules Fieri and Patrick McNeany

had bright spots during competition, with Jules finishing 14th in the NBL,

narrowly missing out on the top 11 all league team. Will Kelly came on at the

end to help us make a late season run, and Seth Doolittle, who came out

late due to basketball, played well at times to help the team make a run at

2nd place. Senior Brandon Bone had his best season ever as he won a few

tournaments and was at the top of the NBL for most of the season, actually

tied for the lead going into the championship tourney.  He ended up second

by .3 of a stroke.  His playoff experience went extremely well, taking third at

NCS and winning a medal for his efforts.

MEN’S JV GOLF This year’s JV golf team was coached by Frank

Guillen and Forrest Granzotto. Once again, the

team’s home course was Windsor Golf Club. This

year’s team played a shortened schedule with a

record of 5 and 2. We anticipate next year’s varsity

team to have a great season with some quality

players moving up.

WOMEN’S VARSITY SOFTBALL The Varsity softball team completed their 2015 campaign with an overall

winning record of 11-8 and an NBL record of 7-7 with at least one win over

every NBL team except for one. As a result of our winning record we played in

the Div IV NCS playoff series. This year’s success was anchored in the play of

our three senior leaders; Emily Jaffe, Sarah Holly and Megan McConnell, and

the strong pitching and catching duo of juniors Lexie Raasch and Sarah Knight.

Coach Briggs and his staff are proud of the student athletes’ accomplishments

on and off the field.

Junior Lexi Raasch pitching

Freshman Sabelle Vreeland Sliding into home

TRACK & FIELD This year’s enthusiastic team was one of the smallest track and field teams in

Newman’s history and the team was plagued with many injuries. Senior Tommy

Streb has a chance to be the first Newman sprinter to win both the 100- and

200-meter dash. Brad Neuerburg has an opportunity to win the 400 meters.

David Knapp and Spencer Jacobs have an opportunity to be successful in

the jumping events. Rita Hu will be a competitive opponent in the hurdle races.

Congratulations to all the athletes on a successful season!

GRAD NITE! 2015

Friday, May 15, 2015 an annual CN tradition, Day on the Green, started out on

a gorgeous Friday, celebrating the last day of classes for the academic year!

The ASB leadership class organized fun events, booths, and music to thank

the students for a stellar year!

ASB provided food trucks while class councils and various other clubs sold

delicious treats.

After indulging in food and drink, students enjoyed the dunk tank, a huge slip

‘n slide, hamster balls, volleyball, and music run by the music department!

A perfect end to the last day of classes for the 2014-2015 school year!

The commencement ceremony of 2015 was filled with excitement, anticipation,

a little wind and many smiling faces as each student reached the podium to

receive his or her diploma, recognizing four years of accomplishment from

Cardinal Newman High School.

Once the diplomas were handed out and the traditional “turning the tassel”

was complete, the transition from candidate to graduate was accomplished.

Flying hats and hugs marked the celebration. Graduates and their families

exchanged hugs and posed for photos before heading over to an all-night

celebration in their honor.

The graduates celebrated with food, carnival, karaoke, and live entertainment

lasting until the early hours of the morning. Their goal for the evening was to

collect as many tickets as possible in hopes of winning one of many prizes

distributed that evening. It was continuous fun and laughter as they celebrated

as a class for one last time.

The evening was a HUGE success due entirely to the help and support from

our parent volunteers. A BIG “thank you” goes out to the many families who

generously donated their time, prizes, gift cards and the incredible baked

goods that were enjoyed by our graduates.

We would like to acknowledge and thank the following individuals who

graciously volunteered their time and efforts to create yet another successful,

safe and sober “Grad Nite”.

NEWMAN OXFORD SCHOLARS SPRING 2015

In the Fall of 2014, we looked back in time one hundred years and tried to measure the impact of WWI on us today. For the Spring,

we turned to the future, looking fifty years ahead to what Cardinal Newman will be as a high school, in the school year when we

celebrated our start fifty years ago. While this challenge for them was difficult, imagining themselves at age 67 or 68, retiring instead

of just starting, the view of possibilities was fascinating. While technology, all agreed, will continue to expand and increase, other

things such as student and teacher interaction will exist. All expect to find our school still here, though the configurations and

building plans varied. From typewriters to computers to who knows what is next, we heard them try to clarify that communication

will go on. Dick Tracy may have had a two-way radio wrist watch in the comics then, now we have Apple watches on the market;

the students showed an ability to distinguish between the look of things and the use of things that directly change our lives. We

even tried to have a dinner menu that matched what may be tastes of the future, and also reflected our current preferences, being

non-GMO, and a choice between meat and vegetarian. With gratitude, we had Mr. Scharfen’s leadership to moderate and question

the presenters. Parents were in attendance along with other family members, including siblings, and several faculty members. Our

yearbook this year used the theme “That was Then . . . This is Now”, and with the help of our top academic students, we also asked,

“This is what will be”. Learning will continue, just with different ways, like next year’s use of portable electronic devices. A school

though is a community of people, not buildings and a collection of things.

CBSL SENIOR BOARDS One of the most pride-filled days on campus took place on Thursday, May 14, 2015, as our Class of 2015 presented their Community-

Based Service Learning (CBSL) projects to the entire school community and many guests from the greater Sonoma County

community. The seniors’ project work reflected the Gospel message of Jesus and a response to the Blessed John Henry Cardinal

Newman who offers to all, “God shall call on me and I will hear the Lord.” The Class of 2015 responded to that call remarkably in a

variety of ways. This year our seniors served locally and globally, touching lives in Nicaragua, Vietnam, India and Cambodia.

The success of the day depended upon not only our seniors, but the efforts of the Hospitality Committee, our maintenance crew and

the CBSL Committee. The spirit of the day was one of celebration and thanksgiving. Many seniors shared they truly realized that in

the end their CBSL work transcended a grade or a graduation requirement. In the words of one senior, “In the beginning it was about

me. In the end, it was about those I served.

Campus Ministry seeks to encourage

the spiritual growth and promote the

faith formation of Cardinal Newman

students. In keeping with our school’s

mission, programs are designed to care

for the whole person and to bring the

message of Jesus in a spirit of love to

our community. Students are invited to

experience the Catholic faith on campus

and nourish themselves spiritually and

religiously through theology classes,

prayer opportunities, monthly liturgies,

class retreats and outreach events.

CAMPUS MINISTRY

Campus Ministry Students

In addition to school-wide programming, Campus Ministry Class is an

opportunity for Sophomore, Junior and Senior students to go beyond the

religion curriculum through leadership, peer mentoring, and faith sharing

activities in an intimate class community. Campus Ministry students help to

plan liturgies, act as peer leaders on retreat, plan events, and advance the

message of the Gospel on and off campus. During the fall semester Campus

Ministry hosted special events. Oregon Catholic Press singer and songwriter,

Greg Walton, came to campus in September to present on the personal call

to holiness to theology classes as well as lead a special lunchtime concert,

“Praise on the Green”, for the community to enjoy. Later that month, the

Campus Ministry Classes invited all students to meet at the flag pole during

break for “See You at the Pole”, a global student-led event to bring young

people together in prayer. CN students sang, offered intentions and prayed

together. Campus Ministry students made candy cane prayer cards to

encourage all students during finals week. Throughout the year the Campus

Ministry class students helped to staff retreats, lead rosary prayer during the

week, prepare school liturgies, as well as take time for their own class retreats.

Over one hundred golfers hit the green to play

in the 25th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament on

Thursday, May 28, 2015. It was a perfect day for

golf and golfers were able to enjoy a full 18 holes!

Once golfers were registered and collected

their raffle tickets, mulligans, and tee prizes, they

enjoyed tasty bites before heading out to the

course. As soon as the carts hit the course, golfers

discovered that they would be “Golfing Around

the World”, finding holes representing different

countries such as Germany, Italy, China, Mexico,

France, Cuba, and America. Golfers enjoyed food

and/or drink on almost every hole, making for a

very festive event. On Hole #3, Passport Photos

were taken by Lifetouch Photography as golfers

enjoyed a layover in Cuba by relaxing with cigars

donated by The Squire. Golfers also had the

chance to win a car thanks to Silveira Buick GMC for making a hole-in-one car

available!

Following 18 holes of golf, participants gathered in the club’s beautiful outdoor

reception area for drinks and a fabulous Mexican buffet. Golfers and guests

enjoyed the evening as they shared stories and viewed the auction items,

raffle prizes and tournament trophy with names of past winners engraved.

Special thanks to Mr. Nick Werle ’97 and Mr. Ryan Vice ’90 for serving as our

MC and Auctioneer this year. The final paddle raise during the live auction will

A LETTER FROM THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONPresident – Nick Werle ‘97The Cardinal Newman Alumni Association would like to thank the alumni

donors from Cardinal Newman and Ursuline High Schools for giving time

and support to Cardinal Newman High School this year. We were very

pleased to award the Alumni Legacy Scholarship ($1000 awards) to two

deserving students. While contributing to tuition assistance through the alumni

scholarship, we also attended and volunteered at many school-related events

including Cardinal Newman’s Homecoming, Fun in the Fall, Career Day,

Ursuline Crab Feed, Spring Legacy Gala, Alumni Golf Tournament, and many

other events benefitting CNHS.

Another fun way to be an active member of the CN and Ursuline alumni

community is to attend a Quarterly Alumni Luncheon. These Alumni

Luncheons are held on campus in July, January and April. These catered

luncheons are FREE to all CN/UHS alums and are a great way to reconnect

with your alma mater and friends of yesteryear.

The Alumni Association Committee meets monthly to discuss ways of involving our alums of all ages, and ways to support the school through the Association. Many events are supported through this association including our Fun in the Fall Wine & Beer Tasting event, our annual Career Day, our annual Golf Tournament, our Quarterly Alumni Luncheons, and our Homecoming festivities. The committee is always looking for new alum involvement. If you are interested in being an Alumni Association Committee Member or for more information. Contact Nick Werle at [email protected].

KEEPING IN TOUCHWhat Our Alums Are Up To!

David Placek, Class of 1970David Placek, the president and founder of Lexicon, is responsible for driving the strategic and creative vision for Lexicon Branding. Under his leadership, the company has continued to focus on the development of brand names that support business and marketing objectives.  In developing category-changing names like Pentium®, Swiffer® and BlackBerry®, Lexicon has become one of the most influential branding agencies in the world. Other Lexicon credentials include General Motor’s OnStar®, P&G’s Febreze®, Coca-Cola’s Dasani® and Truvia®, Toyota’s Scion®, Sonos®, Microsoft’s Silverlight®, and Colgate’s Optic White® and Wisp®. The New Yorker magazine described David as a leader with “an unpredictable imagination”. Fast Company

magazine claims “no branding agency has generated more envy than Lexicon Branding”.

Christa Durand, Class of 2003A versatile lyric soprano praised for her clarity and warmth of tone, Christa Durand has performed in hundreds of concerts and shows in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.  A native of Santa Rosa, California, Durand is recognized as a gifted performer who is equally comfortable in a classical recital hall as she is in an intimate cabaret venue.

Christa was a recipient of the Everett B. Person Scholarship for Vocal Studies at Sonoma State University, where she received her classical training and her Bachelor of Arts in Music. During her studies, she became an avid enthusiast of new works and composers. She works, and has worked with, many composers to help bring their opera, folk, jazz, and new-age visions to life.

While at Sonoma State, she performed vocal works by composer and pianist Noam Lemish and began collaborating with composer Glenn Grubbs. Christa and Mr. Grubbs have released two albums with their new age western rock project, Image and Nation, and continue to produce cutting edge music together.

Christa’s newest album, Abide with Me, is a tranquil album that reminds us of loves enduring presence. The peaceful sounds of voice, harp, piano, and flute inspire and comfort. Albums and digital downloads of Abide with Me and Golden Slumbers are available through CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com/cd/abidewithme) and iTunes. Concert schedules and other media can be found at  www.christadurand.com.

Chris Fisher, Class of 2003Chris Fisher has a unique appreciation for walking. After surviving a horrific car crash in 2001 and being told he may never walk again, he’s overcome obstacles that most of us will never encounter. He now has as close to a normal life as he ever could have expected. He lives in Manhattan Beach, drives to work at his alma mater, goes to the gym, and skis. As the basketball announcer for USC, he still faces daily challenges, but his positivity, patience, and attitude have helped him reach the success he’s had in all aspects of his life. For a full story see the article in the Orange County Register, “USC Basketball Announcer Chris Fisher has Unique Appreciation for Walking”, www.ocregister.com/articles/fisher-651671-chris-able.

Daniele Citti, Class of 2011The Cardinal Newman High grad, now 21 and a senior at St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga, took a break from studying for finals to perform with the St. Mary’s choir at the storied Carnegie Hall in Manhattan.

He and the other students were invited by a producer who heard their gold-medal performances at the World Choir Games last summer in Latvia.

Having now triumphed, too, at Carnegie Hall, Daniele will soon graduate from St. Mary’s with a BA in performing arts and launch

another dream — to compose music for films, TV or video games.

There are many great ways to get involved here at Newman, and you don’t need to chair a large fund raiser or head up a large committee to do it. Take a look at the many groups that make up our volunteer community at Newman and see if anything appeals to your talents and interests:

Parent Board: The Cardinal Newman Parent Board works toward

building a community within our school and we are

always looking for creative and energetic parents to

work on committees. It is a great way to meet new

parents and be involved in our wonderful community. If

for more information,

Contact: Tracey Aldridge @ [email protected]

Dads’ Club: The Dads’ Club is open to all dads, grads, grand-

dads and friends of Cardinal Newman. Monthly Dads’

Club dinners are held at different venues and are a

great way to meet new friends. If you are a dad, grad,

granddad or friend, you are already a ‘member’ of the

Dads’ Club! So plan to join them for the next Dads’

Club dinner!

Contact: Jeff Bertoli @ [email protected]

Boosters: The CN Boosters are committed to supporting our

student-athletes, coaches and the Athletic Department

with consistent hands-on involvement primarily through

volunteering at sporting events. If you are interested

Committee meets monthly to discuss ways of

involving our alums of all ages, and ways to support

the school through the Association. Many events
