FOUNDATION The Los Angeles Valley College 2015 ANNUAL REPORT Breaking Ground for Admin & Career Advancement Bldg. Enthusiasm erupted last January as Valley College broke ground on the Administration and Career Advancement (ACA) Building. This facility will be the hub for the college’s administration and Job Training Program. It will also be the future home of the LAVC Foundation! Job Training Director Lennie Ciufo was especially excited about “the future of workforce development.” He recog- nized that while the new center will serve the needs of the college, it will also serve members of the surrounding areas and help provide jobs! Foundation Executive Director Raul Castillo was equally excited and proud of the forthcoming building. “As someone who meets with alumni and former students regularly, the ACA will be a modern facility and our alumni can return to visit our campus with pride and excitement!” LAVC President Erika Endrijonas presided over the ground- breaking and was joined by LACCD Board President Scott Svonkin, Assemblyman Adrin Nazarian, LACCD Chancellor Francisco Rodriguez, and Student Body President Sandhu Sukhsimran. The ACA Building will be a 41,000 square-foot two-level struc- ture located near the college’s main entrance on Fulton Ave- nue. The building will also house college services, Cooperative Education, classrooms and meeting spaces. The ACA is scheduled to open in late 2017. LAVC Astronomy Receives $50,000 Donation Professor David Falk was pleasantly surprised to receive a donation last December for $50,000 to benefit the LAVC Astronomy program. Mr. Stephen Gerard made the donation to honor the memory of his brother Robert Gerard who had passed away in September 2014. Robert had taken courses in music at Valley College in the late 1980’s. One day, he came across a flier about the Astronomy Group on campus and began attending the group’s various activities. He was a member of the Astronomy group for 26 years, even serving as its Treasurer and volunteering to sell tickets and help set up for the Astronomy Group’s shows. Before he passed away, Robert mention to Stephen how much the Astronomy program had meant to him. After a visit and tour of the Planetarium, Stephen un- derstood Robert’s apprecia- tion of the LAVC Astronomy. The Astronomy Group’s Sun- day Night guest lectures are now named the Robert J. Emeritus Math Prof Leon Marzillier Establishes Endowment

Emeritus Mathematics Professor Leon Marzillier established an endowed math scholarship with a $10,000 donation to the LAVC Foundation last May. Marzillier has been a long time supporter of the Foundation with donations to provide scholarships to LAVC math students.

Marzillier retired from the LAVC Mathematics Department in 2008. He served as chair of the Department on several periods during his 30 years of service. He also served as the AFT President, Academic Senate President, and a Grievance Representative.

Math Professor Luz Shin was hired by Marzillier in 1989. When asked about Marzilier’s donation, Shin said, “I am never surprised by Leon’s generosity. He has been a giving person with his time, talent and treasure. We should all be that way!”

Freeway Lady Finds A Home at Valley College

Last March, renowned artist and muralist Kent Twitchell began to resurrect The Old Lady of the Freeway. Many of us simply know her as The Freeway Lady and we saw her during the 1980’s along the 101 Freeway in Hollywood. She suddenly disappeared in the early 1990’s when a billboard company accidentally painted over the mural.

The Lady is now located at the Student Services Building on campus and it is the first mural ever to be painted at Valley College. The expected completion and opening will be in the fall.

The LAVC Art Gallery also showcased Twitchell’s art from November 2014 to February 2015. He is known for his realistic portraits some of which are celebrities, which you can find in many distinct areas of Los Angeles.

Greetings from LAVC President Dr. Erika Endrijonas

Chemistry Receives Donation $183K Awarded in Scholarships The LAVC Foundation awarded $183,000 in scholarships and stipends to its students during fiscal year 2015.

In the past 13 years, the LAVC Foundation has awarded near-ly of $1.5 million in scholar-ships. The LAVC Foundation

wishes to thank all of its contributors who include alumni, corporations, faculty and staff for continuing to make annual donations to scholarships and awards. A number of en-dowed scholarships have also been established ensuring perpetual scholarship funding.

If you wish to establish a scholarship, please call the LAVC Foundation Office at (818) 947-2618.

LAVC Music Department & Foundation Featured in People Magazine In June, People Magazine featured actress Kristy McNichol who talked about her love of singing and her enrollment at the Los Angeles Valley College music program. McNichol enjoys participating in the college choral group. McNichol also appreciates her fellow classmates who have come from all walks of life. Some of the younger students look up to her and her passion for singing. Lastly, McNicol stressed how important it is to support the Music Department and the LAVC Foundation with dona-tions. She understands that community colleges like Valley do not have robust budg-ets, and donations allow the Choral group to purchase things like sheet music, provide stipends and scholarships, and needed supplies.

Thank you Kristy for shining a light on Valley College! You are a terrific advocate and champion.

Time flies when you’re having fun, which is why it’s so hard to believe that I’ve just completed an entire year as President of Los Angeles Valley College.

A major focus of this year has been the amazing amount of construction taking place on our cam-pus, thanks to Bond Measures J, A and AA. Over the last year, the college broke ground on the new Student Union building, the Athletic Training Facility, and on the Administration and Career Advancement building (formerly known as the Valley College Gateway). If you have driven by the corner of Burbank and Coldwater Canyon, you’ve seen the new softball and baseball fields going in as well. In March, the college held a well-attended ribbon-cutting for the new Community Ser-vices Center. In the coming year, the college will break ground on the new Valley Academic and Cultural Center (formerly known as Media and Performing Arts). Lastly, Kent Twitchell’s “Freeway Lady” mural is almost complete and hard to miss as you travel south on Fulton Avenue.

Also exciting this past year was college’s removal from “Warning” and successful reaffirmation of our accreditation status by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges

(ACCJC). This was due to a great deal of hard work by many people at the college, but we’re not done yet. March 2016 is the next comprehensive visit by the ACCJC to all nine colleges in the LACCD, so accreditation work continues at the college and across the district.

Much of the success of LAVC is due to the community and the donors who support the college through gifts, large and small. I am extremely proud of the LAVC Foundation and its Board and I look forward to continuing our great work together.

Emeritus Chemistry Professor Karen Timberlake pictured with her husband Bill donated $5,000 last December to benefit the Chemistry Department as well as provide scholarships for students studying chemistry.

Our new Valley College President, Dr. Erika Endrijonas, has brought much energy to our campus since she arrived last August 2014. Dr. Endrijonas, myself and members of the Foundation Board have been strategizing and meeting individuals to get them better connected with our wonderful campus.

The Foundation will be receiving two new grants this coming year from the California Community College Foundation (CCCF) and the Workforce Investment Board (WIB). CCCF will award the Foundation $100,000 to support the Valley Internship Pipeline Program (VIPP). This program provides high school interns college credit and exposes them to mentors in industry that include Business, Child Develop-ment, and Computer Information Technology. The WIB will be awarding $148,000 to support The L.A. Fellows Program which takes cohorts of recently displaced or unemployed professionals, retools their skills, and assist them to better market themselves in their industry.

Emeritus Math Professor Leon Marzilier has been a long time supporter of the Foundation. He solidified his support of our students by establishing an endowed math scholar-ship this past year. Also, every once in-a-while the Founda-tion receives a surprise and unanticipated donation. This past year, we received $50,000 form Stephen Gerard to support the Astronomy program, and $10,000 from the Mac Valley Users Group for general scholarships.

You will be happy to know that your LAVC Foundation awarded $183,000 in scholarships, stipends and awards this past year to 308 students. The Foundation has also distributed nearly $600,000 to support various campus programs and activities!

I truly appreciate your continued support of our Foundation. Please continue to encourage fellow alumni, friends and family to consider supporting Valley College and our students.

Sincerely,

Raul Castillo Executive Director Los Angeles Valley College Foundation Class of 1988

Foundation Annual Report

Dear LAVC Friends,

If you have not had the chance to visit Valley College recently, I definitely want to encourage you to do so! There has been so much happening on campus. From the opening of the Commu-nity Services Building to the painting of the Freeway Lady, it has been exciting. The new Student Union is on schedule to be completed at the end of the year and we will be breaking ground in a few months for the Valley Academic & Cultural Cen-ter (VACC).

College President Dr. Erika Endrijonas joined our Board last August 2014 and I appreciate her participation and enthusi-asm at our meetings. She not only brings much needed leader-ship to the college, but has also shown great interest in ad-vancing the mission of the Foundation.

As we start this new fiscal year, the Foundation will continue to collaborate and partner with a number of the campus’ depart-ments and programs in hopes of identifying and securing grants and donations - all of which the Foundation will fiscally manage. Examples of such relationships are the Family Re-source Center and Extended Opportunities Programs & Ser-vices (EOPS), which yielded grants from LA UP and the Pritzker Foundation respectively. Job Training, Cooperative Education and Health Sciences will soon be in the mix with pending grants and proposals!

We so appreciate your support of our Valley College students. If you have in the past donated to support programs such as scholarships, you may want to think about naming a bench or buying a brick to support our endowment. If you are working on your estate plans, perhaps you will consider including the LAVC Foundation in your plans. You have a menu of options!

Los Angeles Valley College is very grateful to you for being so supportive of the Foundation. Thank you once again and “Go Monarchs!”

Sincerely,

Andrea Goldberg Kaufman President Los Angeles Valley College Foundation
