had us do a mock interview. That really

helped because I had never done a

professional interview and most of the

advice he gave us was true and really

helped.”

“I had an internship at the Cortland

favorite professor that I took every class

he taught. I leaned so much from him. It

“My public speaking class and my

advertising classes helped me become

successful in the business world.”

“My communication skills are definitely

my best takeaway from SUNY Cortland.

I spend my day talking to tons of

people and so I need to know how to

communicate - on the phone, in person,

and via email. My professors and the

overall curriculum for the COM degree

definitely got me there.”

“I served as a sports writer for the

Dragon Chronicle each of my five

semesters at Cortland, and copy editor

for my final semester. My time there

gave me the basic feel of what it's like

to work in a newsroom and piece

together a story.”

“Key experiences were getting involved

in a variety of organizations, gaining

mentors from different departments on

campus, and forming meaningful

relationships with peers.”

“Don't get frustrated when applying to jobs. You may get rejected multiple times but every

time you get rejected it will make you stronger and more experienced at interviews.”

“Take every internship you can handle. Work for free and work hard. I wouldn't say it's ONLY

about who you know, but a reference goes a long way, so make sure you have several.”

“Ask the question: Who am I? College gave you the foundation of forming a sense of identity.

Take those experiences and constantly reflect. Ask yourself: How can I continue to grow and

develop purpose with my life?”

“Get involved and step out of your comfort zone. Classes are great for getting the basics of

what you want to do, but real-life experiences are what will prepare a college student for

what comes next (and it looks better on a resume). Cortland offers clubs of various shapes

and sizes that can be fun, and any extra involvement you do outside of class is worth it.

Before you graduate, push to work as an intern somewhere. It's an invaluable experience,

you'll meet contacts you can use for future reference and plenty of them even pay you.”

“Being a part of the Cortland NYPIRG

chapter taught me the way that laws and

bills work in Albany.” “All the leadership organizations I belonged

to really helped me to develop as a leader

and become a professional.”

“Take advantage of all the opportunities that are presented in college! Whether it be an

internship, study abroad program, and elective credit, do it all!”

“Don't be afraid to start at the bottom. Take any job you can in your field in the beginning

and the better stuff will come later, you just need to work for it and earn it. Don't get

discouraged if you don't succeed right away, you will get there, just make a plan of where you

want to end up and stick to it.”

“Do not be afraid to take the leap and move somewhere new, different, or not in your

original life plan. Countless times people would bring up the lack of jobs in education or

how their brother, cousin, etc... still did not have a job teaching in New York/Long Island.

The truth is there are PLENTY of jobs in education out there, you just need to be willing to

step out of your "bubble" and go do it. Did I expect to become a teacher in Florida, no way,

but I am so thankful I bought myself a one way ticket and took the opportunity given to

me. I'm not someone who is sitting, waiting, and doing next to nothing to try and become a

teacher in NY/LI. I'm getting fantastic experience and loving every moment of it. About

95% of the people telling you, "You won't get a job", "Getting a job is too hard", are the

same people who have no intention of leaving their "bubble" or adapting their "life plan".

The job market is tough, but those jobs are out there if you are willing to look. Never feel

like you are failing, keep your head up, and breathe. It always gets better.”
