The session will include the reasoning why Buckland Mills Elementary implemented student led conferences, the steps that each grade level took to introduce the conferences to the students and parents, and resource examples to help any school get started with implementation.

Learn the foundations of using inquiry circles as an instructional technique that fosters collaboration and
comprehension leading to deep student thought. In this session, explore how inquiry circles combine
research, thinking, and collaboration as a method for small group projects that work.
A5 History Alternative Assessments in Middle School
Presenter: Jeff Girvan, Supervisor, History and Social Sciences, Office of Student Learning
With the elimination of USI and USII SOL tests in 6th and 7th grades, the History and Social Science staff
facilitated teams of teachers in creating authentic performance and project-based assessments. These
assessments will enable teachers of US History I and II flexibility and choice to support and assess
student mastery of standards. This session will provide an opportunity for teacher leaders and
administrators to peruse the assessments, sample results, and discuss implications for planning and
instruction with a focus on historical literacy.
A6 Facilities Maintenance Operations in a World-Class School Division
Presenter: Brian Gorham, Administrative Coordinator, Office of Facilities Services Matt Venturini, Facilities Management Specialist, Office of Facilities Services Liz Garver, Secretary III, Office of Facilities Services This presentation will cover the various systems and tools available to staff for requesting maintenance
services and provide instruction into how to effectively cooperate with various facilities based policies
and regulations. Basic training will be provided to aid in understanding the elements of facilities
management that ensure a productive and comfortable environment for all staff and students.
A7 Using a Digital Device and Smart Notebook to Assess Students

informally assess your students. You will learn how to create the assessment quickly, how to give it to

A10 Using Video as Data to Support Professional Growth

When used as non-evaluative data during a reflective conversation, video allows teachers to intimately
examine their instructional delivery and the impact on student learning. In this session, participants will
be introduced to a structure for incorporating video during reflective conversations.

A12 Crafting Questions that Increase Rigor

Asking powerful questions is a critical skill in teaching, mentoring, and coaching. Not only do questions
provide teachers formative information, questions can also be compelling feedback for others. In this
session, participants will examine the elements of questions that increase the breadth and depth of
responses.
A13 Exploring Ways to Complete the Training in EL Techniques Requirement
Presenter: Kimberly Peterson, Professional Development Coordinator, Office of EL Programs and Services Sarah Serrano, Elementary ESOL Specialist, Office of EL Programs and Services This session will call attention to existing course offerings, the PD menu of options, as well as other
opportunities for completing the required training in EL techniques. This session will be an open forum
for discussion and sharing of ideas and experiences between participants who may be instructional
personnel, school, or central office leaders.
A14 Collaboration between the Administrative Team and School Counseling Department
Presenter: Cherif Sadki, Principal, Gar-Field High School Jason Supon, Director of School Counseling, Gar-Field High School Kaitlyn Kellogg, Career and College Counselor, Gar-Field High School This session will offer an in depth look at the collaboration between an Administrative Team and a
Professional School Counseling Department. The focus will be on how the two resources can work
together to increase student achievement within a high school setting through the leadership activities
of the professional school counselor and administrator. Relationships between the principal and director
of school counseling will also be examined.
A15 Budgeting for Results (ZBB)
Presenter: Prashant Shrestha, Administrative Coordinator, Office of Finance/Budget
On March 19, 2014, the School Board approved adoption of a zero-base budgeting process. A program,
called Budgeting for Results, has been implemented by the Finance Department to review central
departments and build budgets from zero budget authority. Budgeting for Results is designed to support
our organizational values, the Strategic Plan, Federal/State mandates, and the VA Standards of Quality.
This program follows a process framework that fosters continuous incremental improvement. This
presentation will provide some background on budgeting and discuss the Budgeting for Results
program.

Presentation discusses items, budget, mental, health, Supplemental Retirement and VRS employees

A17 "My Kids Don't Know Their Facts!" Grades 3-6
Presenter: Donna Stofko, Elementary Mathematics Coordinator, Student Learning
This is a concern that seems to transcend the grades particularly from grades 3 and above. What exactly
are the "basic facts"? Which ones should children know at each grade level? What does “automatic
recall” mean? What is a good way to assess basic facts? How can I help my students who have not
learned them? If you are wondering about any of these questions, come join me for an engaging
discussion about this topic and take away some ideas to use in your classroom.
A18 PBIS in Action

School PLCs and collaborative teams throughout the school offer tremendous opportunities for
continuous professional growth and student learning growth. PLC and CLT throughout the Division have
developed at different rates and with varied levels of understanding. This session is designed to provide
insights, assess current reality, and identify strategies to "re-charge" the power of PLCs in your school!

The dashboard emphasized our commitment to the Baldrige continuous improvement process, collaboration, and improved collection and analysis of data for improved student outcomes. This project was implemented through a collaborative process including the entire staff, committees, and PLC’s. We needed to have common, relevant data sources at each grade level on a document that was easy to use and understand; and it needed to be generated by the teachers that would use it.

A24 VAAP…it’s Not a Mystery

The Virginia Alternate Assessment (VAAP) is an evidence-based alternate assessment available to students with significant cognitive disabilities. The academic standards that these students work on have been reduced in complexity and depth. This session will demystify the process of: who qualifies, how to collect data, how the VAAP is scored.
A25 Planning the Perfect PLC
Presenters: Ashley Hoyle, Third Grade Teacher, Minnieville Elementary School Deb Ellis, Assistant Principal, Minnieville Elementary School Robyn Walker, Fifth Grade Teacher, Minnieville Elementary School Planning the Perfect PLC focuses on Minnieville's journey to refine its PLC process. Since 2011, Minnieville has significantly increased its overall academic performance on all SOLs, consistently earned the TIPA recognition award, has been recognized as a PLC National Model School, and is currently a School of Excellence. This session will go through Minnieville's PLC process and help attendees reflect and refine their current collaborative planning process.

Learning
In this session, the role of the administrator and their impact on literacy instruction will be explored. As
a means toward high-quality Tier I instruction to support learners, the role of continued growth in
literacy learning on the part of the administrator cannot be underscored. In this session, participants will
have research presented which outlines the key elements to successful literacy practice in classrooms.
Participants will also learn behaviors of leaders in schools with strong literacy practice with an
awareness of the role of administrator in literacy accountability.

B10 The Network Practice- Transforming School Culture

The OUR Education Network Processes = Total Engagement. Participants will examine the process of
transforming school culture from vision to continuous school improvement. This core process ensures
that all voices are heard, respected and acted upon through consensus and action learning. This
research based practice has been refined and refined through experience across six countries: Australia,
New Zealand, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Norway and the United States.
B11 Science Technology and Hands on Manipulatives to Support Student Mastery

As more rigorous standards in science are implemented and pedagogical methods have to adapt to
assess student mastery, the effective use of technology and hands on materials to support instruction is
critical. This session will expose educators to some equipment, technology, and web resources available
to assist in inquiry based science education.
B12 Update on Federal and State Accountability Requirements for School Leaders
Presenter: Jennifer Cassata, Director, Office of Accountability Paul Parker, Supervisor of Testing, Office of Accountability Each year, the requirements for federal and state accountability change and it can be overwhelming for
educational leaders. The purpose of this session is to provide an overview of current state accreditation
requirements as well as to explain the impact of the new ESEA flexibility waiver on federal accountability
requirements. A major goal of this session is to help prepare educational leaders to respond to inquiries
about their schools’ performance in the appropriate context.
B13 Using Music to Enhance Instruction in Kindergarten

Music is a powerful instructional modality, especially among young learners. This session will review the
reasons for using music in instruction, demonstrate how music can be used to meet content objectives,
and show how music can benefit ESOL learners. Lists of content related songs and artists, as well as
teacher written songs will be provided. Participants will have the opportunity to write their own content
based song in a group setting. This session is intended for classroom teachers who would like to increase
the use of music in their instruction.

One of the greatest challenges in leadership is how to work across generational lines. Most schools have
at least three generations working together and this could lead to missed opportunities for
communicating effectively and enhancing student progress. This session will help administrators
improve communication, retain staff, and look towards a multigenerational plan for student success - to
include recruitment, coaching and professional learning.

Presenter: Melissa Dyas, Fifth Grade Teacher, Alvey Elementary Mary Anderson, Fourth Grade Teacher, Alvey Elementary
Student driven learning empowers students with skills for the 21st century. Through Project-Based
Learning and 20 Time in Education, upper elementary teachers facilitated students on a journey of
exploration to understanding curriculum. Developing skills of collaboration, communication, critical
thinking, and creativity, students learned and met standards through projects. Integrating subject areas
allowed for a more natural connection to the real world and the authentic learning motivated students
towards success.
B18 Redefining the Rubric on Grading

Based on the books “A Repair Kit for Grading” and “Grading Smarter, Not Harder,” this presentation will
focus on examining and improving grading practices in the classroom. Teachers and administrators will
break down assessments including projects, homework, tests, and test retakes, to effectively
communicate student achievement and mastery through these traditional assessments. Attendees will
walk away with ideas that can be immediately introduced into the classroom and/or school as well as
ideas about implementing grading systems that will accurately reflect student mastery of the content.

solving techniques that allow the participant to think like a genius. How so? Participants will be
encouraged to identify the type of ‘smarts’ they possess based on the theory of multiple intelligences

On March 19, 2014, the School Board approved adoption of a zero-base budgeting process. A program,
called Budgeting for Results, has been implemented by the Finance Department to review central
departments and build budgets from zero budget authority. Budgeting for Results is designed to support
our organizational values, the Strategic Plan, Federal/State mandates, and the VA Standards of Quality.
This program follows a process framework that fosters continuous incremental improvement. This
presentation will provide some background on budgeting and discuss the Budgeting for Results

and understand; and it needed to be generated by the teachers that would use it.
