Les Grands Concours du monde 2015 EditionRiesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Sylvaner and Pinot Blanc

Two major events for the 2015 Grands Concours du Monde edition organized by Strasbourg Événements*

The two days format has been supported by all professionals related to the Wine world.

This year, the competitions will take place on Sunday and Monday (instead of Saturday and Monday as in the previous edition) because this enables a larger availability and a wider representation of the involved professional wine judges (wine merchants – winegrowers – oenologists – sommeliers – purchasers – journalists – representatives of the viticultural world). That change has also been confi rmed by the whole range of our partners and particularly by Union de la Sommellerie Française.

2015 edition strengthened by the VINOFED accession

VINOFED is the World Federation of Great Wines and Spirits Competitions. The Federation gathers 9 international contests which all obtained the OIV patronage.

As in the previous editions, the 5 grape varieties’contests will take place simulteanously what represents a technical challenge and does really confi rm the high quality of the organization.

With 20 competing countries Strasbourg Evenements is so grateful for the fi rst participation of CYPRUS, CROATIA and KAZAKHSTAN wines !

The Grands grands concours are defi nitively international Jury members of 20 countries of the 5 continents will be present.

The ContestsThe protocol

The very strict tasting rules require the jurors to be unfailingly impartial in their judgement.

The tasters will be required not only to taste but also to describe and comment on the wines according to the following criteria :

• The visual aspect • The olfactive aspect • The impression on the palate • The overall impression • The particular uniqueness and character of the product

The whole criteria are then reported and registred through a numerical process thanks to an electronic device.

The Grands Concours du Monde welcome professionals tasters (qualifi ed tasters, oenologists, wine waiters, wine growers, journalists etc...), selected throughout the world according to their experience andcompetences. Most of them are also experts for other international OIV supported competitions.

Each table will be made up of 3 French and 4 foreign tasters. So, a majority of foreign tasters is secured for each table. There will be 10 tables. Each jury will taste the 3 grape varieties every day starting at 8.30 am. The 70 national and international judges will debate rat their jury’s table regarding about 800 tasted samples and grant then their note.

The rewarded winegrowers coming from all over the world will be authorized to affi x the seals of the prizes obtained to their bottles.

Focus 1Interview of Katerina Karampatea

The Grands Concours renewed this year their 2 focuses on international judges. It is a funny way to travel virtually in different cultures and carreers always related to the passion for wine.We decided 2015 to devote our pages to Mrs Katerina KARAMPATEA andMr. Tommy LAM.

The ladies take precedence, with the interview of Katarina KARAMPATEA, greek wine expert and regular judge in the Grands Concours du monde of Strasbourg.

Katerina KARAMPATEA is chemical engineer and oenologist (Master degree in Chemistry, DEA of œnology from the Université de Dijon and a Diplôme National d’œnologue de la République Française). She worked in prestigious Wine estates in Burgundy, Switzerland and Greece. Since 2012 she is Director of the Greek oenology lab Oenopolis. In the same time, she teaches in the

oenology department in the Technology Institute of East Macedonia and Thrace. She is wine-grower and qualifi ed as food safety trainer and also organizes some winetastings. She is member of the Union des Œnologues de France, of the Union of greek chemists and of the Union of Greek oenologists. As a wine expert she is also judge in a lot of international wine contests.

Katerina took time to answer that interview and we can discover a highly passionate and available person.

2. During your studies in France in Dijon you lived right in the middle of the French culture and education, what did you take away from the French œnology teaching ?

French scientifi c education is at the high level and characterized by strong values like precision, consistency and respect. It is quite rewarding to study oenolgy right in the country where modern oenology was born. There are still so many researches to be carried out in oenology, in order to improve wine production and embottlment and also to understand wine impacts on human health. To reach those goals the training and the education are necessary. During my studies in France I have learnt how you can appreciate wine as a real piece of civilization, indeed you have to consider it as the search for happiness and not as a luxury product.A French adage says :«opening a bottle of wine is like immersing oneself in a book «.I love France and its culture is very inspiring.

3. You did work in several importants positions in famous French wineries and know you are at the helm of the innovating Onenopolis lab. What is the work of Oenopolis ? Could you let us know some of its achievements? Which are its partnerships ? and what about your job as the managing Director of the lab?I have always dreamt of an innovative lab. We took the risk to launch that project in the very diffi cult context of the greek economic crisis. But during rough periods, people often look for quality products. That is why Oenopolis main missions are following : achievement of chemical and oenological integrated studies, providing high quality scientifi c services and advices with tecnical support. All those missions are are aimed at improving the product quality in accordance with national and international legal requirements. An innovative example is the molecular biology applied to oenology in order to detect and enumerate micro organisms altering wine quality. We work with French partners such as a French cooperage, an other winemaking lab and a greek wine nursery. Our customers are located in the greek areas and cultivate different vines. All are quiet young wineries, that is what motivates us most! Actually we had the chance to build directly with them

1. Has your interest in chemistry led you to discover the wine in all its complexity and diversity or was an early passion for wine which led you to select chemistry studies as the fi rst step in the wine knowledge ?

The truth is that it all started with chemistry! During my chemistry studies, in order to discover and learn pratically the fascinanting chemical engineer job, I used to follow training periods each sommer in different chemistry branches. And during one of those training periods I worked within the Greek State National Chemistry Lab in the tobacco Institute. Then I teached chemistry in private companies and I fi nally completed my chemistry studies with a decisive training period ( harvest – winemaking) in a greek winery. And from that «meeting» onwards I have built my strong relationship with wine and wineworld in general!

4. The story between Greece and wine has been a life or rather a centurieslong love a air ; nowadays is it still a strong relationship ?Which are the greek present grapevarieties ? What about the wine production, importations and exportations ?

There were already 3 types of wines in the Ancient Greece : white, rosé and red. Following several archaeological excavations, the oldest wine-press in the World has been discovered on the island of Crete. Wine inspired the whole Greek mythology : Dionysos who teached wine making to Orestes who planted the fi rst vine… and vine becames the pillar of the greek agriculture and one of the 3 major elements of the mediterranean triad « grains – olive trees and vine »Since 1956 through a the French law, the Samos wine has been classifi ed as a « Grand Cru » with the adequate sticker on its bottles : an important French recognition of its high quality! And more recently, over last 20 years, the Greek wine quality has really improved.Greek businessmen investments in wineries’ building and tecnical settlments have hardly started and so we are only at the beginning of that new wine story or History...Most of the greek oenologists are highly educated, studied in Greece, France, Italy or in the USA and have worked all around the world. The vines composition after being mainly characterized by French grape varieties is now changing through the promotion and planting of greek grapevarieties.Greek grape varieties such as Assyrtiko, Malagousia, Xinomavro, Agiorgitiko, Limnio, Moschofi lero, Roditis, Athiri, Robola (even if their names are quiet diffi cult to pronounce in the exportations context) produce highquality and elegant wines to be laid down or drunken young . Those wines refl ect mediterranean climate, Greek culture and terroirs.Wine industry is an important branch within the greek economy especially thanks to the increasing exportations towards Europe (Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and France), United States and recently China and Russia. The development of wine tourism is a great challenge : to ensure an harmonious combination between the wine as a gastronomic product and the rich greek cooking without compromising products quality.

their strategy and their relative products. We have also founded a Wine lovers’club which organizes tastings, wine making seminars, also speak about harmony between wines and food gives, sommellerie advices… The lab Director is part of the operating team and also manages it keeping in mind strong principles like respect, quality, tracability, confi dence and professionalism.

6. You know that the OIV President is Mrs Claudia Inès Quini and that she will be our prestigious guest during the 2015 edition ; In your opinion which guidelines and steps could be launched anf reached by that important and international organization particularly thanks to its woman chair?

The wine domain was strictly reserved for males. Nowadays women have sucessfully integrated the wine industry. So, the OIV female presidency is obviously a good thing. With her great carreer, Mrs Claudia Inès Quini is a wine expert recognized by her peers. Born in Argentina, where the production, consumption and exportations of wine is relevant, the OIV President could play an important role in harmonizing international rules and could also form a bridge between the New and the Ancient wine world.

5. You are really familiar with the international wine contests and a regular judge in the Grands Concours du monde, so how would you describe that Strasbourg appointment and its own organization ?

I appreciate international wine contests, because they are places where you can meet and discuss with a wide range of experts of the wine world ( production, sales, education, restaurants, press...). At the same time it is a pleasure to taste wines coming from all continents, trying to categorize them according to their quality level so that the world consumers could choose more easily their bottle of wine. The Grands Concours du monde gather several grape varieties competitions and are open not only to Alsacian but also to international Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Sylvaner and Pinot Blanc. It is so surprising to discover the differences related to the various climates, countries, terroirs and to various winemaking and technologies.Excellent organization and strict observance of the OIV rules, those are important criteria which develop credibility of the rewarded wines on the market.

7. What about you Katerina and your projects for the 5 next years? You know I am interested in various topics, that is why I chose oenology : it is a living subject !Obviously I want to go with Oenopolis in order to improve and develop the lab.And I would also like to write wine books…2010 I personally planted a little 2.5 ha vineyard composed by Greek and Alsatian grape varieties. So, my big project would be the management of my own winery in order to produce myself a high quality wine ... so that, one day, I could have my wine rewarded with the Grand Prix du Jury in the Grands Concours du monde!!!!!

At this stage of her project, if her nectar has the same quality as Katerina, we can immediately award it the Great Generosity Medal … it is a very promising quality for a wine, isn’t it ?

Focus 2Interview de Tommy Lam

Asia in sight !

Our virtual judges’tour takes us to Singapore where we « meet « Mr. Tommy LAM who honours us for the fi rst time with his presence in the 2015’edition of The Grands Concours du Monde. His judging experiences are within the famous Berlin Wine Trophy, Vinitaly, Los Angeles International Wine Competition and also in National Wine competitions, challenges or awards in Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Chile, Germany and Portugal.

Mr. LAM’s experience included : 16 years of Tourism (1971 - 1986 HK), 9 years in Hotel management (1986 – 1994 Hong Kong & Singapore), 17 years in Restaurant operation (1995 – 2011 Singapore) and 9 years in wine education (2005 – 2014 Asia).

He started to be more interested in wine mid 90’s.From this decade onwards, he has been carried away by the inspiring wine passion : on the one hand he acquired a solid and complete training as wine educator - to mention but a few, 2003 Prof. Lam is the First Asia Wine Educator graduated with the Prestige Wine MBA from Bordeaux Business School- and on the other hand Tommy LAM also founded (or assisted to found) Alliances and Associations or big events linked with Sommellerie and wine education promotion in Asia.

He has always been interested in international jobs or businesses and everything he touches seems to turn in big national or vast international projects! So it comes as no surprise that he brings his manager’s competences and his wine expert’s talents to the service of the sommellerie development in a huge playground as China.Naturally, he created the China National Sommelier Competition in 2009, and the China Young Sommelier Team Competition in 2011. 2015 is the Fourth edition and the most important moment will the National Final on April 24th.

Mr. LAM emphasizes that the way of becoming sommellier is still different according to the to the wine culture and traditions of the country or continent and: « the clear difference is that in Europe sommeliers learn their job when in School, while in Asia, young people learn to be a Sommelier by pick up interested when they are at work. »

Another current phenomenon in China is the increasing interest of women for sommellerie and their growing participation in sommellerie competitions.

Tommy LAM takes the opportunity to mention 2 great ladies of the chinese wine he considers to be particularly noticeable : Emma Gao from Silver Height and Judy Chan from Grace Vineyards and explains what make them unique in the chinese wine world.« Emma being the wine maker from Ningxia, managed to blend the technique she learnt

0000•VINS CONCOURS_dossier-presse-EN.indd 18 10/04/15 14:12

PRESSBOOK

LES GRANDS CONCOURSDU MONDE 2015

from France with the terroir that she grown up with to make wines that representing Ningxia/China with quality on par with International expectation.. »« Judy, being the second generation of a home grown vineyard, focus solely in a true China wine styles yet earning recognition from international wine critics. Though rather new, but with open-minded philosophy to provide opportunities for young local and Asia wine professionals.»

Those 2 chinese wine sucess stories are maybe linked with the market size and evolution over the 10 past years : a double digit growth of the domestic consumption refl ected by import fi gure whereas it will remain single digit growth for a long time. Although investment slow down, quality has improved in China. Regarding the white wine varieties, the chinese production is very small… No well-founded fear for the 2015 competitors of the Grands Concours du monde to have their Great Gold medal captured by a Chinese Riesling or Gewürztraminer wine grower!Mr. LAM who has already discovered many vineyards all over the world remembers of the Alsacian area he visited 4 times and particularly of high quality white wines produced by small wine growers.

Another anecdote but not the slightest illustration of Pr. LAM’s entrepreneurial nature and tenacity is the successful lauching of a national or rather continental day of the Asian sommelier. In 2013, after seeking the approval from Master Brian Julyan, the CEO and founding member of The Court of Master Sommelier, Prof. LAM announced April 23 to be The Asia Sommelier Day. Sommeliers in 3 Asian cities celebrated the First Asia Sommelier Day in 2013. Sommeliers in 7 Cities joined in 2014. On April 23, 2015, the First Asia SOMM will be held in Qingdao. His concrete training actions and wine education plan, are true examples of his strategic vision and objective to step up to a higher level, hoisting Asia to the top ranks of world sommeliers.A strong and organized development of the wine education is the prerequisite for reaching that ambitious goal. Nevermind ! “WiSDOM I II III” a wine knowledge and service duo-focus education program, was launched by Prof Lam in 2006. Through cooperating with Universities and Institutes in Asia : 1.
