Year in Review2014

The year 2014 brought another State Title to Chaska High School for Girl’s Volleyball as well as the First Metro West

Conference Championship and countless player accolades. Chaska renamed it’s home tournament the Toni Kaiser Me-

morial Invitational in memory of it’s past player Toni. Chaska went on to win it all in an emotional celebration for the

program and the Kaiser Family. What will be remembered most of the season was the young women’s commitment to

achieving the ultimate team goal and creating life long memories. Chaska graduated 7 seniors in the Fall of 2015 and

7th MSHSL State Volleyball Championshiplooks to continue the legacy of

greatness at Chaska Volleyball

with strong underclassmen coming

up.

The Mother Of Chaska VolleyballBy: Kenzie BachmannPrinted in Eye on the Hawk: The student news site of Chaska High School | October 29, 2014

For Sue Murphy, coaching volleyball isn’t just her job, it’s her life. And it’s been a part of her life for as long as she can remember. In fact, along with playing four years in high school (graduating in ’82), she has been coaching for 33 years. And over those years, Sue has been able to coach many talented girls and has brought them to six state championships. And Chaska volleyball seems to be positioned for another very soon. “I love coaching for two reasons really,” Sue Murphy says. “The first being working with such great kids year in and year out, we’ve always had such great athletes taking part in our program. The second is community pride. I grew up in this community and have seen it grow a lot over the years and it is very exciting for me to see how our community supports us.” “I love coaching with Sue,” assistant coach Chuck Zemek says. “She has so much passion for the game and it’s so fun to watch. And it’s even more fun to see the girls put that passion that Sue gives them into action.” During the 33 years Sue Murphy has been coaching, 18 of those years, Zemek has been along for the ride. They have been a very successful pair. And having been together so long, it makes it easier for the pair to read each other. They know what each other wants without explanation. “It’s that brother/sister relationship that we’ve developed,” Coach Zemek continues. “You can trust them, and you can irritate them.” Sue Murphy’s coaching has continued to develop and her techniques and styles tend to grow as she matures as a coach. However, she knows what she wants from her teams and the goals they can achieve. “What I really ask for from my teams is uncompromised effort and consistency. Volleyball is supposed to be a safe place where players can leave all the stress of the day behind, work hard and enjoy being with their teammates,” Murphy says. At home, Sue was blessed with three boys of her own. “I always like to think of the girls as the daughters I never had,” Sue shares. “I’ve shared some very great memories with all of them, some really tough times, and everything in between. I really enjoy seeing former players as women, living their lives, enjoying their careers, and raising their own families.” This volleyball season in particular is very special to Murphy. It not only brings her another opportunity to coach and to shape young women, but it gives her a very big opportunity to take this community back to the state tournament. Last year Chaska fell just short of the state tournament. However, having majority of the same players back, it should be another great season for the Hawks. “It’s really great to know that we should be knocking on the door again,” Sue states. This said, the group has 7 senior starters and as the season progresses Sue can start to feel the pressure. And her goal is to challenge the girls to keep them at their level and thinking about working harder and having more fun than any other program out there. And as the pressure rises, Sue must keep the girls calm and focused.Junior Megan Purdy can definitely feel the pressure of the season rising. “People don’t say we can go to state, they say we are,” she says. But Murphy says that as long as the Hawks can focus on their goal, and keep working hard, it shouldn’t be too far out of reach. And Sue has done her best throughout all her years of coaching of keeping the program strong and united. Junior captain Keena Seiffert states, “Chaska Volleyball means family. There’s nothing else to it.” Sue has helped each and every one of her girls over the years to not only grow as a player, but as a person. Senior cap-tain Lindsay Snuggerud says, “Sue has pushed me to get better and better every day. I look up to her. She is a true role model. She’s taught me leadership skills and how to be a good caring person and I am very thankful for that.” “Could I describe Sue in one word? Wow, that’s difficult. So many great words pop in my head,” Snuggerud continues. “How about succesful.” Not only does Murphy push girls to be the best and help them work towards success, she makes them all better people. Coach Sue Murphy is considered somewhat of a hero for Chaska Volleyball. She is and will be remembered as something great.
