Morning, I-70acrylic on panel, 24”x36”

$2,000

An artist trained in analytical psychology, Margaret Weisbrod Morris’s work is a straightforward blend of metaphor and reality, with a touch of the absurd. Working in a variety of mediums and subjects, her work focuses on visually representing sensory dynamics and visual minutiae to convey the intensity of precise moments in life. Morris is drawn to monotonous, repetitive visual elements, and strange, illogical visual situations, and her her work juxtaposes emptiness with chaos, calm with intensity to create meticulous, dreamlike, or irrational scenes that are based in reality but are slightly implausible. Morris holds a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and an MA from New York University.

Texture always plays a large part in my paintings, actual and visual; currently breaking into the picture plane and creating actual 3-D space on canvas. Also simpli-fying composition to eliminate all that isn’t important to the painting. Sim-plification makes each mark significant. Paint application is also paramount. I mix different methods of making marks and shapes together to create a visual tension. “Westward” is one of the first paintings of this series.

Sally Frerichs Piller was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1955. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking at the University of Kansas in 1977. Making woodblock prints has been the primary focus of her art making in her adult life, though she also works in other printmaking techniques such as intaglio, lithography, monotype, let-terpress, as well as in many other media, including painting in oil and gouache, ceramics, assemblage, wood carving, papermaking, and the most important in her opinion, drawing. One of her large color woodblock prints was acquired by The Spencer Art Museum, where it was included in an exhibit entitled, “Inspired by Japan,” 2003, which featured 19th and 20th century western art as well as Edo period Japanese masterpieces, and in “Windmills to Workshops, Lawrence and the Visual Arts” in 2004.

In 2007 to 2009, Sally was the owner, director and curator of 6 Gallery in Lawrence, Kansas. The gallery featured group shows with topical themes. Sally has been working in mokuhanga, Japanese woodblock printing, since 2005 and in Oct.-Nov. 2013 she won a five week residency at Mokuhanga Innovations Laboratory in Kawaguchiko Japan. She has taught this tech-nique at the Lawrence Arts Center. www.sallyfpiller.com

RAISE THE PADDLE

Raise your paddle to make a donation to the Lawrence Arts Center’s Visiting and Resident Artist Fund. The Lawrence Arts Center’s Visiting and Resident Artist program is vital to our ability to offer the best in arts education, performing arts, and contemporary exhibitions. These artists work with preschoolers through adults, teach in our studios and in the community, exhibit, create new work in dance, theater, or visual arts, challenge us, and inspire us.

Project-based Residencies

This residency supports area artists who wish to learn new mediums and/or who need temporary studio space to complete special projects. Artists receive use of studio space at the Arts Center, a materials stipend, and pri-vate instruction in any medium.

Short Term Invitational Residencies

These residencies include visual and performing artists who are commis-sioned to create new work for the Lawrence Arts Center.

Year Long Residencies in Ceramics and Printmaking

The Lawrence Arts Center offers 12 month artist in residence programs to ceramics and printmaking artists. Each year, applicants with M.F.A. degrees apply for the two positions. The residents, chosen by Arts Center staff, other artists, and curators, receive living space, a monthly stipend, curatorial and technical support, instruction in teaching workshops and classes, and a solo exhibition of new work created at the Arts Center. They teach classes and care for studio spaces. Our 2013-14 artists-in residence are John Mc-Caughey, printmaking. Kyla Strid, ceramics.

Thanks to the National Endowment for the Arts, ArtPlace America, Center for Global International Studies, Anne and David Hollond, Beth Schultz, the Thomas D. Galloway Family, Ellen Lecompte, and all who “raised the paddle” at our April Benefit Auction for support of our Visiting and Resident Artist Fund.

Mark Cowardin is a father, a husband,

consists of an essential and delicate

conflicting ideas, and as a native U.S. Midwesterner, Cowardin

examines the complex relationship to natural resources that the

Midwest sometimes embodies. The implications of Cowardin’s

narratives are sometimes alarming, complex and layered, and

often ultimately tinged with yearning for a connection to the

level of meaning. Her work demonstrates the subtle power of a very

discriminating veil of ambiguity in her vision. Her opalescent and often

shimmering light is set against a background of essential mystery. Her

imaginative eye produces work rich in textures, middle-tones, and darks,

which beautifully contain transcendent dream-like obliqueness. Her

imagery is similarly oblique and indirect, often seeking out the most

common objects seen in surprising and puzzling ways. This work is

unique and demanding of the imaginative participation of the viewer.

Oma and Opal ithograph, 84/90, 25”x33”

$900

Elizabeth Layton, a native of Wellsville, Kansas began drawing in

1977 at the age of sixty-eight when she took a drawing class at a

local university. In class she learned to use the technique of “blind”

contour drawing in which the artist looks at the paper only for

points of reference, concentrating on the subject reflected in the

mirror rather than the line being drawn on the paper. Every day,

Layton worked at creating self-portraits that reflect her response

to contemporary social issues. That fall, a local newspaper reporter,

Don Lambert, was searching for an interesting subject for an article

and stumbled upon the class display at the college. Upon discover-

ing the drawings of this “old woman from small-town America,” Don

became her biggest fan – and promoter - and to this day continues

to tirelessly promote her drawings and her story.
