NATIONAL INTERAGENCY AVIATION FREQUENCY GUIDE

FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY

The Aviation Frequency Guide has been compiled by the National Interagency Communications Division (NIICD) / National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) to support aviation communications within the Western United States. This guide lists the frequencies assigned to the Geographic Area Coordination Centers (GACCs) and interagency dispatch centers at the time of publication. Assigned frequencies and tones change. It is the responsibility of the user to obtain the correct frequency for their flight. Do not use any frequencies not assigned for use in your area.

An Interagency Aviation Technical Bulletin (IATB) dated Feb. 28, 2010 gives new direction in reference to toning the National Flight Following Frequency of 168.6500. Please read the IATB located in Appendix D. Should you have any questions regarding this change please contact the individuals listed at the bottom of the IATB.

Please report any errors, omissions or changes to the:

Interagency Guidance on Toning of the National Flight Following frequency

All Users of National Flight Following

During the National lnteragency Radio Meeting, an agreement was reached the Forest Service and the Department of the Interior (DOI) requiring tone protection on the National Flight Following (NFF) frequency ( MHz, narrowband analog) to avoid radio interference.

The of the Chieffnfonnation Officer Directive and Forest Memorandums dated August 13 and August 14, authorized and provided guidance on implementation. The project to implement NFF toning is to be completed by May

The implementation is a three-phase approach managed by the Interagency Radio Alliance (IRA). The following guidance is provided by the Interagency Interoperability Oversight Group (IIOG):

Phase I: NFF toning action plan data collection. I consists of radio technicians and telecommunications ers collecting data on what wiU be required to tone NFF during the implementation of 11 and Ill.

o Phase I has been completed.

Tone radio transmitters. consists of toning the transmitters of all base station aircraft radios ing this frequency, without exception. All transmitters operating on NFF must be programmed to transmit the Continuous Tone-Controlled Squelcb System tone of Hz.

o II for base stations (ground) has been completed. o II for aircraft (air) has begun and must be completed no than March 26,

Fire and Aviation Management is responsible for ensuring all aircraft have complied with this clirection and should verify for proper configuration.

It is important that the ll toning of transmitters is done no later than the dale specified above. If the transmitters are not toned before tl1e receivers are toned in Phase III, then there will be a loss of collllllunications.

Phase Tone radio receivers. consists of toning the receivers of all base stations and aircraft radios using this frequency, without exception. All receivers operating on NFF must be programmed to accept the CTCSS tone of

o III for aircraft (air) shall begin no earlier than March 29, and be completed no later than May 28,

o Phase JTI for base stations (ground) shall begin no earlier than April 19, and must be completed no later than June 25,

areas due to safety:

o Due to chronic interference issues afTecting aviation safety the areas are authorized to immediately implement II and III (ground and air):
