At Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) at Southeastern Regional Medical Center (Southeastern), patients like Terence are at the center of our hearts, minds and actions every day as we do everything scientifically and humanly possible to help them beat cancer.

Our story in Newnan is one of impact—for patients and their families, for our hospital team and for the community we call home. In 2015, we served nearly 2,700 patients. We expanded our facility to 455,000 square feet, doubling our footprint. We grew our clinical roster, adding experts in gynecologic oncology, medical oncology, stem cell, gastroenterology and plastic surgery, among many others. We understand the value of specialized care, demonstrated by the Centers for Advanced Oncology—our next generation of care model that includes a multidisciplinary team with training and experience in treating breast, lung, prostate, hematology and gastrointestinal cancer patients. By having experience treating only cancer, our experts can better target the disease. Through Precision Cancer Treatment, we can better understand a patient’s cancer through advanced genomic testing that enables physicians to take a more targeted therapy approach. And our growing clinical trials program offers treatment options available at few hospitals in the country.

We focus intensely on delivering high-quality care that patients value. In 2015, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recognized Southeastern as a five-star “overall” rated hospital. The Joint Commission named us a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® and Press Ganey® honored us with the Guardian of Excellence Award® for patient experience.

We proudly answer the call to make Georgia a better place to live, work and do business, exceeding the economic impact and jobs we promised to the state of Georgia. Our economic impact in Georgia now totals more than $1.3 billion in new economic activity and $950 million in Coweta County alone. Since opening, we have provided $45 million in charity/indigent care to patients from Georgia and more than $800,000 to charitable organizations, local and regional cancer support organizations, and community events. And did I mention the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) named Southeastern the #1 Top Workplace in metro Atlanta in the large company category?

Expanded Services and Highlights

CENTER FOR ADVANCED INDIVIDUAL MEDICINE (CAIM)

The Center for Advanced Individual Medicine (CAIM) provides education and consultation to patients about genomic testing and treatment options, as well as patient navigation for targeted therapy options as recommended by a medical oncologist based on the patient’s genomic testing. For those who qualify, advanced genomic testing may be able to uncover in-depth genetic information about the patient’s cancer that enables physicians to identify and prescribe a more targeted and potentially effective treatment option—at the molecular level. Additionally, it provides patients with a deeper understanding of the unique nature of their cancer at the genetic level.

CENTERS FOR ADVANCED ONCOLOGY

The Centers for Advanced Oncology at Southeastern provide specialized care for breast, lung, prostate, hematologic and gastrointestinal cancer patients by bringing together multidisciplinary teams of clinicians with training and experience in treating those specific types of cancers. Prior to treatment, clinicians recommend options based on the patient’s specific cancer type, which ultimately helps reduce side effects and improves well-being.

GROWING GASTROENTEROLOGY, ENDOSCOPY AND NUTRITION CENTER FOR INTERVENTIONAL ENDOSCOPY

In 2015, Dr. Kevin Woods, Chief, Interventional Endoscopy, Gastroenterology & Nutrition, joined Southeastern and has helped to grow the Gastrointestinal Center for Advanced Oncology, which offers state-of-the art diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic technologies coupled with comprehensive consultative care. The hospital’s team of board-certified gastroenterologists, advanced practice nurses and nutritionists works with patients to deliver the highest standard of clinical care with the personalized care expected from our patient-centered approach. To better serve and meet patients’ needs, the hospital launched five new clinical services in addition to our advanced oncology services. Services include Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal neoplasia service, the pancreatic cyst and pancreatic cancer screening service, the interventional endoscopy and advanced mucosal imaging service, the colorectal screening clinic and the endoscopy service. Equipped with exceptional diagnostic and treatment techniques, the center aims to deliver the best health outcomes in treating digestive diseases and all GI cancers with a safe, compassionate and innovative approach.

Southeastern Regional Medical Center offers a variety of technologies and treatment modalities to treat cancers, as well as comorbidities and side effects. The following is a comprehensive list of cancer programs and treatments launched in 2015.


GROWING GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY PROGRAM

Gynecologic oncologists Dr. John Geisler and Dr. Kelly Manahan joined Southeastern’s growing clinical staff in 2015, bringing new capabilities such as debulking cytoreductive surgery. This surgery, which takes place prior to chemotherapy, has been proven to be more effective in removing tumors. Patients typically stay four or five days in the hospital instead of seven to 10. With the team of Dr. Geisler, Dr. Manahan and advanced pelvic surgeon and gynecologist Dr. Rama Rao, Southeastern is growing its gynecologic oncology program and its use of innovative treatments targeted for gynecologic cancers. For example, Interstim® Medtronic, launched in 2015, is a proven therapy that targets the communication problem between the brain and the nerves that control the bladder.

INFLAMMATORY BREAST CANCER (IBC) RESEARCH PROGRAM

The Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) Research Program at Southeastern was founded this year by Director of Cancer Research and breast medical oncologist Ricardo Alvarez, MD, to address IBC, the most lethal form of breast cancer, affecting mostly young women and African Americans. While early detection and treatment are pivotal to the success of a positive outcome, innovative detection methods and specific therapies for effective treatment have yet to be determined. The program includes a diverse group of scientists, physicians, nurses and staff focusing on and learning about the most recent medical advances and future trends in IBC detection and advanced clinical practices. The multidisciplinary approach to IBC at CTCA allows physicians to efficiently work together, share ideas and treat patients with this aggressive and quickly spreading form of breast cancer.

PLASTIC SURGERY/RECONSTRUCTION

With the addition of plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Frederick Durden, Southeastern now offers patients more options in reconstructive plastic surgery. For instance, patients with breast or head and neck cancers can now choose to have tissue transplant procedures using microsurgical techniques that allow the tissue to be transferred from another regional flap. Patients who have had implant failures or complications tend to benefit most. Dr. Durden’s microvascular skills provide the ability to offer the unique DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Peripherater) flap.

PRE-PROCEDURE ANESTHESIA RISK EVALUATION (PrePARE)

PrePARE allows a safer method of general anesthesia for patients undergoing surgical procedures in which anesthesia is required. In recent months, PrePARE has been regularly used for patients undergoing major abdominal surgical oncology and gynecologic oncology procedures. As the Southeastern clinic continues to grow and increase its staff, services will be expanded to other surgical subspecialties as well. These services ultimately will improve patient safety and increase efficiency for both anesthesiologists and surgeons. Specifically, PrePARE may provide cardiovascular risk stratification, which is the traditional first-line evaluation for a patient prior to surgery; may identify and manage significant comorbidities to ensure an optimal perioperative period; and may help identify patients we would consider unsafe for elective surgeries and tune up their immediate pathology.


STEM CELL

The Hematology Center for Advanced Oncology took big steps in developing its transplant program in 2015 with the additions of stem cell and cellular therapies physician Dr. John Pawloski, transplant coordinator Bethany Harrelson, and Lisa Nelson, a social worker dedicated solely to the hematology team. New equipment also helped bolster the program by providing additional resources. In late 2015, a multiple myeloma patient became the first Southeastern patient to have stem cells harvested and stored in case of recurrence of disease. The entire process took six days, including

increasing the number of stem cells in the patient’s blood (called mobilization), followed by stem cell harvesting using a process called apheresis. The patient was able to go home just two days after the procedure. In 2016, more patients are anticipated to go through the harvest process. The hematology team, along with the laboratory and pharmacy, is working to get processes in place to conduct its first autologous stem cell transplant.

TARGETED RADIATION THERAPY PROGRAM

We continue to grow our targeted radiation therapy program and have launched a variety of new treatments.

Accuboost® is a new and innovative radiation treatment for early-stage breast cancer patients. The procedure enables radiation oncologists to target the boost dose to the lumpectomy cavity margin, the tissue that is the most likely site for future recurrence. Accuboost provides many benefits to patients, including a shorter procedure time, the possibility of preventing recurrence, reduction of radiation side effects and reduction of scarring when compared to regular radiation therapy. In addition, the process directs the radiation parallel to the chest wall, thereby reducing exposure to organs below the chest wall.

In addition, Chief of Radiation Oncology Dr. Sean Cavanaugh helped to launch SpaceOAR—a new tool proven to protect prostate cancer patients from the negative side effects of radiation therapy. The SpaceOAR system is intended to temporarily position the anterior rectal wall away from the prostate during radiotherapy for prostate cancer, creating space to protect the rectum from radiation exposure. Southeastern is the first treatment center in the state of Georgia, and one of the first centers nationwide, to adopt this advanced technology.

Our Cancer Committee includes a multidisciplinary team of board-certified physicians and health care professionals. Membership includes physician representatives from medical oncology, radiology, pathology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, interventional pulmonology, pain management and supportive care. Additional members include representatives from administration, nursing, pharmacy, dietary services, rehabilitation, genetic counseling, research, nurse navigation, care management, cancer registry and psychosocial services, and an American Cancer Society (ACS) delegate. The Committee Chairman and Cancer Liaison Physician emphasize a collegial and harmonious interaction among the members so we exceed high standards in patient care and meet their communication needs.

The Cancer Committee is responsible for setting goals and implementing and improving cancer-related activities in our institution. The committee meets once a month. Throughout 2015, our center prepared for Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation—a highly prestigious certification founded by the American College of Surgeons that emphasizes a commitment to excellence and is dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and, importantly, the monitoring of comprehensive care.

As part of this endeavor, the committee set our clinical and programmatic goals. Through everyone’s efforts, we established the foundation for a state-of-the-art Advanced SUrgical REcovery (ASURE) program coming in 2016, interventional pulmonology and gastroenterology programs, and the Centers for Advanced Oncology.

In the past year, and as part of our preparation for CoC accreditation, the committee assessed our population needs and implemented the seeds

for lung, colon and breast cancer screening programs. In addition, seamless processes were put in place for patient navigation and psychosocial distress screenings.

The Commission on Cancer made cancer survivorship a major priority as well. In response to this, our program implemented an outstanding survivorship program that places our institution ahead of its path for accreditation. Several patient safety initiatives were also launched throughout the year, and we held four successful cancer conferences that included comprehensive case presentations in a multidisciplinary setting.

Under the strong leadership of Dr. Anita Johnson, our National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) is moving toward accreditation and continues to thrive and provide exceptional care to breast cancer patients.

2014 Southeastern Cancer Conference ReportDuring 2014, the Southeastern Cancer Registry coordinated weekly General and Breast Cancer Conferences. These were attended by a multidisciplinary physician, nursing and ancillary service team to ensure comprehensive representation and care.

Together, they reviewed cases in detail and discussed stage, prognostic indicators, national guidelines, plans for appropriate diagnostic studies, therapies and clinical trials. These conferences were prospective, patient-oriented treatment planning meetings that provided free consultation to our patients and education to our medical and hospital Stakeholders.

Cancer Registry Report

Cancer data is important for a variety of different reasons, including collecting and recording the most complete and accurate cancer data possible.

During 2014, 1,486 cases were added into the Southeastern Cancer Registry database. Of these cases, 819 were analytic and 667 were non-analytic. In 2015, over 1,900 cases have been accessioned into the Cancer Registry database thus far.

Collectively we maintain data collection and ensure follow-up is complete and accurate with quarterly quality review by the Cancer Committee’s multidisciplinary physician representation. We have maintained a successful follow-up rate of 80% or higher on all analytic patients to date.

The Southeastern Regional Medical Center Cancer Registry Department maintains a data system designed for the collection, management and analysis of data on individuals diagnosed with cancer. The Cancer Registry has entered more than 5,000 analytic and non-analytic cases into the Cancer Registry database since January 1, 2013.

Report on Cancer Program StandardsThe Prevent. Aggressively. Coweta Expo

In 2015, Southeastern launched the Prevent. Aggressively. employer wellness program, which provides education in the areas of breast, lung, prostate and skin cancer prevention, along with nutrition, physical activity and stress management. Each of these campaigns includes informational materials with insightful and inspiring information on cancer prevention and general wellness. Complementary programming in the forms of educational presentations, wellness challenges and awareness events is also included in the program.

Southeastern also conducted a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) in early 2015 in the Coweta County community, which represents both the largest number of patients served at Southeastern and the hospital’s physical footprint. The assessment determined that the top three cancer-related causes of death within the community are lung, colorectal and breast cancer.

As a result of the assessment, Southeastern conceptualized and hosted the Prevent. Aggressively. Coweta Expo, held in November 2015. The event was promoted to the Coweta County community through multiple communication vehicles and was designed to educate participants on the signs, symptoms and risk factors of each of the three cancers.

Specific features of the event included pre-scheduled breast (screening mammogram) and lung (low-dose lung CT) screenings, and breakout sessions on each of the three cancer topics led by Southeastern physicians. An educational expo also provided information on a number of topics related to cancer prevention and risk reduction, including smoking cessation, nutrition, fitness, stress management and cancer survivorship.

Approximately 100 community members participated in the event and completed an event evaluation to determine the effectiveness of the event.

• 70% of respondents found the event to be very informative.

• 67% of respondents felt very comfortable or comfortable after attending the event (a 17.5% increase).

• 74% of respondents stated they would make lifestyle changes toward cancer prevention as a result of the event.
