“College” is the attainment of valuable postsecondary

credentials beyond high school, including professional/

technical certificates and academic degrees.

Alabama Possible works to build educational equity by increasing the number of Alabama students who pursue and complete a college education, particularly among low-income students, first-generation college-going students, and students of color. We do this by:

Teaming individual students with near -peer mentors to complete milestones focused on the social, emotional, and financial aspects of college access and success through the Blueprints College Access Initiative;

Building a college-going culture by supporting all students with resources and relationships necessary to pursue and complete valuable postsecondary credentials;

Nurturing cross- sector partnerships with school systems, higher education institutions, and other like- minded community organizations to fill gaps rather than duplicate services.

About Alabama Possible’s College Access and Success Work

From left to right: A cohort of Phil Campbell High School students after they discussed their college choices with Alabama Possible Program Coordinator Landon Taylor. \\ A University of Alabama Honors College student shared a meal in the cafeteria with a Hillcrest High School freshman during a campus visit. \\ A Ramsay High School freshman described what college means to him as part of our college knowledge curriculum.

Page 3: 2015 Alabama Possible College Access and Success Impact Report

Blueprints students are teamed with college student “near-peer” mentors who equip them to make structured decisions and navigate the college admissions process, including academic planning, college and career exploration, and financial aid planning.

Trey Hawkins and Jarrell Jordan, both Blueprints students at Woodlawn High School, received prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarships, which

are administered by the United Negro College Fund with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The scholarship provides high-

achieving, low-income, minority students with the opportunity to complete an undergraduate degree in any major at any university. It also helps pay for

the students to attend graduate school in STEM or education fields.

They don’t know what opportunities are out there.

You have a choice to experience what’s out there.”Trey Hawkins, Woodlawn High School Valedictorian

Cash for College boosts the number of students completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students and their families must complete the FAFSA to apply for the Pell Grant, federal loans, and other work-study programs at Alabama’s two- and four-year, academic and technical schools.

Why is the FAFSA important?

9 out of 10 students who complete their FAFSA attend college the following fall, according to the U.S. Department of Education

With more than 100 questions, the FAFSA is longer and more complicated than a typical tax return.

Many parents and students lack adequate knowledge to accurately estimate the costs of college.

Most Birmingham City Schools students who file their FAFSA qualify for up to $5,755 in Pell Grant funding to attend the college of their choice.

low-income students across Birmingham enabled me to

embark on a journey full of new and wonderful opportunities.”

Alabama Possible leads a partnership to boost college completion which includes the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, Birmingham City Schools, the Birmingham Education Foundation, Jefferson State Community College, Lawson State Community College, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Lumina Foundation chose Birmingham as one of 20 cities for that partnership and pledged $120,000 over the next two and a half years in funding.

The team’s goals include boosting college enrollment for Birmingham City Schools from 36 percent in 2014 to 75 percent by 2025. It will work to equip students with a network of resources and relationships that will enable them to overcome the economic and social barriers that

prevent many students from starting and finishing college.

Birmingham and the other 19 communities will work closely with Lumina and other national thought leaders to develop a customized action plan focused on reaching attainment goals to increase the percentage of high-quality credentials held by community residents.

The overall effort connects to Goal 2025, Lumina’s national goal to increase the percentage of Americans with high-quality degrees, certificates, and other credentials to 60 percent by the year 2025.
