Program Overview School-WidePositiveBehavioralInterventionsandSupports(PBIS)isaframeworkof“supportthatincludesproactivestrategiesfordefining,teachingandsupportingappropriatestudentbehaviorstocreatepositiveschoolenvironments”(WhatisSWPBS?,2015).Inanefforttoproactivelyaddressissues,positivesocialbehaviorsareintroduced,modeledandreinforcedforallstudentswithintheschool.AtClarkSchool,thesepositiveexpectationshavebeenintroducedthroughtheuseofthe“ClarkCoreValues”whichare:BeRespectful,BeResponsible,BeCaring,andBeSafe.Theseexpectationsaresetschoolwide,andarereinforcedthroughthehandingoutof“PantherPaws.”Pawsarewrittenwhenadultsseestudentsmodelingpositivebehaviorswithinthecorevalues;studentsareabletousepawsasticketstocashinforclass-wideorschool-wideincentives.

ClassroomPresenceOnaverage,HuskySportvisitedandranprogramsintheclassroom27timesaweekatClarkSchool.EachactivityandlessonincludesexplanationsanddemonstrationsoftheClarkcorevalues,aswellasreinforcementofthesepositivebehaviorsthroughthedistributionofmodified“PantherPaws.”Attheendofeachvisit,HuskySportstaffholdsaraffleusingonlythepawsdistributedduringthatclassperiod-onewinnerfromeachclasswillbeselectedtoreceivetheprizeoftheweek.Attheendofeachday,ProgramLeadersrecorded“PantherPaw”dataforeachclassroomvisit,includingindividualpawsreceivedperstudent,classpawtotals,numberofHuskySportstaffwritingpawsandrafflewinners.
StaffPresenceDuringeachHuskySportvisit,HuskySporthadatleasttwostaffmembersintheclassroom.Onaverage,therewerefourHuskySportstaffandvolunteerspresentineachprogram.Havingmultipleadultsintheclassroomallowsfor:

WorkingtoenhanceHuskySport’spartnershipwithClarkschool,wedevelopedfourspecificpawsthatmatchedthecorevaluesoftheschool.Indoingsowewereableto:
• Providevisualexpectations• Addressspecificcorevalues• Developclearexplanations• Alignstaffimplementation
Inthisprocess,HuskySportalsojoinedtheschoolwidePBISleadershipteamtoassistinClarkschool’splanninganddevelopmentofschoolincentives,programandevents.HavingadirectorontheleadershipteamcreatedadirectconnectionforHuskySporttobestalignwithClarkSchool.Additionally,ClarkLeadershipattendedtheHuskySportmidyearretreattodiscussHuskySport’seffortswithPBISandtorprovidefeedbackonwaystobestalignwiththeschool’sownpractices.
School-WideIncentives
HuskySportalsoassistedClarkSchoolwithmonthly,school-wideincentivesthatincludedphysicalactivityand“minutetowinit”gamesforstudentstoplay.StudentswereabletousethePawstheyreceivedthroughoutthemonthtoparticipate.HuskySportstaffcollectedPawsandranphysicallyactivestationsthatincluded:
• Longjump• Footballpassingcompetition• Basketballobstaclecourse

TrainingsSinceHuskySportsentfourvansofvolunteerstoschooldayprogrammingeachweek,theHuskySportPBISteamfacilitatedseveraltrainingswiththesport-basedyouthdevelopment(SBYD)studentvolunteers.ThesetrainingsstartedwithexplainingtheideaofPBISanditspractices,thenintroducedhowPBISwouldbeimplementedinHuskySport.Thesesessionsexplained:
• theadult’srole• theimportanceofpositivelanguage• desiredbehaviors
TheobjectivesofthetrainingsweretoprovidestudentvolunteersknowledgeofPBISframeworkinordertoincreasecomfortintheirroleswhiledistributingpawstoClarkSchoolstudents.
PBISPractitionersBeforeenteringtheclassroom,volunteersweregivenaHuskySportmatrixtoreference,whichdetaileddifferentexpectationsforeachClarkcorevalueinthevariousprogramsandenvironmentstheywouldbeprogrammingin.VolunteerswerethenencouragedtowriteanddistributePawstoClarkstudentswhentheysawthemexemplifyingpositivebehaviors.Afterspendingtimeintheclassroom,thestudentshadtheopportunityto:
