Robert Weiss, CEO & Artistic Director
Robert Weiss has served as Carolina Ballet's Artistic Director/CEO since the company's professional launch in 1997. Under his artistic and executive leadership, Carolina Ballet has become one of America's premier professional ballet companies, and one of the nation's finest arts organizations (The Wall Street Journal). Weiss began his career as a professional dancer at the age of 17, when he joined the New York City Ballet at the request of George Balanchine. He remained with the company for 17 years, rising to the rank of principal dancer. His career took him next to Pennsylvania Ballet in Philadelphia, where he served as Artistic Director for eight years. As a choreographer, Mr. Weiss has created over 50 new works for Carolina Ballet, and has received great critical and audience response for his Carolina Ballet world premieres including Romeo and Juliet, Messiah, Stravinsky’s Clowns, Carmen, Nutcracker, The Kreutzer Sonata, Firebird, Swan Lake, Cinderella, and countless others.
Nate McGaha, Executive Director
Nate McGaha became Carolina Ballet's Executive Director in 2013. Prior to joining Carolina Ballet, Mr. McGaha had served as the Director of Operations at North Carolina Dance Theatre (NCDT) in Charlotte, NC under the artistic direction of Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux since 2005. During his NCDT tenure, he worked to create and implement a variety of programs including the cARTwheels and American Masters programs bringing high quality ballet to elementary students throughout North Carolina, creating large new works such as Nutcracker, Othello, and Dangerous Liaisons, and working to see NCDT into its new home and performance venue in the heart of the city. Mr. McGaha has also served as the Production Manager for Chautauqua Dance at Chautauqua Institution and toured internationally with Complexions Dance Company. He is a graduate of University of North Carolina School of the Arts, School of Design and Pro-duction where he concentrated his studies in lighting design.
