Our Lady of Lourdes students are blessed by

As you’ll see in the pages of this report, Our Lady of Lourdes School is thriving, our parents and children are happy, and are well on the way to sending another generation of young men and women out into the world to be effective, faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.Actually, we set the bar a little higher than that. Our students are learning not just to be “disciples”, i.e. FOLLOWERS of Jesus. They’re learning to be APOSTLES: young men and women energized and equipped to spread and share the Good News. None of this would be possible without your loving care and support. THANK YOU for your countless hours of service, your participation in our many school and parish-related activities and the financial gifts that flow from your generous love. Together, we will continue to share in the mission and ministry of serving our children, and preparing them to serve others in Jesus’ name.

Peace, with love,

Rev. Richard “Woody” McCallisterPastor, Our Lady of Lourdes Church

Greetings from Fr. Woody

Rev. Richard McCallister, Pastor, Our Lady of Lourdes Parish

Our Lady of Lourdes School prepares our graduates for a rich spiritual life, academic  excellence, creative pursuits, and compassionate service in our changing world.  We work with the Archdiocese, parish, parents, and

community to foster a strong Catholic identity in our students, to educate the whole child, and to fulfill the ministry of the Roman Catholic Church.

Our Mission Statement

Dear Friends,

Welcome back to the 2016-2017 school year! Schools seldom slow down, and that is certainly true at Our Lady of Lourdes. Since last year’s Annual Report was published, the school received glowing Accreditation reviews that, for the 14 standards, boasted three effective ratings and eleven highly effective. They included standards such as Assessment of the School’s Catholic Identity, Instruc-tional Methodology to Support High Achievement of All Students, Data Analysis and Action to Support High Achievement of All Students, and Resource Manage-ment and Development to Support High Achievement of All Students. The staff remains proud of the accomplishment, but continues to work on improving all aspects of the school, for they are truly dedicated to the students in their care. With all that we aim to achieve, we recognize that our major goal is to help children develop a relationship with Jesus Christ that can only be built over

years of daily interaction, ritual, and connection. In order to reach that goal, we strive to offer our children a safe and nurturing environment where they can make mistakes and try again, where they can challenge their thinking and recreate a new paradigm, where they can pray without ceasing, and where they can be authentically human in the presence of the divine. We work to offer our students a foundation that will allow them to excel not just through good times, but also through challenges. With intentional practices, we develop students’ intellectual capacity to thrive in whatever arena they choose, and the emotional intelligence to maintain strong and healthy relationships. We aim to instill in them a spir-itual longing to stay deeply in love with Jesus Christ so that their safest place to go, even in their darkest moments, is to Him. We want them to have a spiritual joy that compels them to share their heart’s delights with the Virgin Mary, and we want them to have the spiritual discipline that keeps them rooted in a faith community when they go through spiritually bankrupt moments. In short, every day we enrich relationships with God through authen-tic interactions so that wherever they are, they will ‘go home’ to the Catholic Church. The Accreditation Report offers its readers information about programs, finan-cial data, test scores, and enrollment. This Annual Report, too, offers factual information about the health of the school. What they might not necessarily tell you, however, is that our children treat others with kindness, work hard, and smile easily. The staff sees each child as an individual, and, through nurture and high expectations, challenges each one ac-cording to their needs. The teachers keep learning about ways to help their students grow. And Jesus Christ is at the heart of all we do. We offer tremendous, heartfelt thanks to the many partners, parishioners, families, and staff who share in our mission to offer Catholic education to all.

Sincerely,

Holly RogersPrincipal

A Year In Review Our Lady of Lourdes School children experience an incredibly well-rounded education, one that far surpasses the boundaries of a classroom. Learning takes place in many different settings - by teaching others through our buddy system, taking part in community service projects, specialized learning activities that delve deeper into subjects such as geography club, and retreats to outdoor camp.

Faith is the foundation of our school. Annually nearly 30 students receive their First Communion here at the parish. Faith is a daily practice and every grade leads Mass at least once a year, gaining respect and love for the Lord. Guided though prayer, our graduates lead a rich spiritual life.

Service is an integral experience and way of life here at Our Lady of Lourdes School. Students can be literally out in a field toiling for others, sometimes inside a warehouse stacking boxes of produce, sometimes bringing and collecting food for the hungry, sometimes tutoring local school children in math. Whatever the work, our students demonstrate compassion, consideration, and respect for others - a lifetime value.

With the vast array of activities available, we find our students apply themselves with vigorous determination and fortitude. Winning can become a consequence of their focus, such as the swim team who took first place for the fourth year in a row, and students involved in this year’s Battle of the Books team who won for a third year!

Music reigns here at school with opportunities such as new instruments, band, choir, and the much anticipated Christmas play. If you were around campus during June, you could not help but notice the entire band learning how to simultaneously march and play in practice for the Junior Rose Parade in Portland.

Fifth graders experienced learning in the great outdoors attending Camp Seymour outdoor school. Here learning is extended to outdoor values, scientific experiments, and appreciation of the diverse Pacific Northwest. Seventh grade’s research was closer to home concentrating on social issues, homelessness being the theme this year, learning and presenting how we can all make a difference. Eighth grade made their annual trip to Washington D.C., bringing to life the social studies they had learned throughout middle school.

Family remains a key element to our school both in terms of extending teaching and values, and in creating the warmth and joy of the school. Grandparents Day was delightful, everyone savoring the extended family that is so important.

During the dry summer months, monies raised with the fund-an-item at the Auction were put to good use. The remaining four classroom windows on the south side of the campus were replaced, the parking areas and black top were resealed and restriped, and the roof was replaced over offices and classrooms.

We had a superb year. Thank you for supporting this thriving group of future leaders in our community and incredible teachers who throw their lives into teaching others.
