WELCOME TO THE 2015–16 SEASON!I’m thrilled to be back home in Rochester and delighted to begin a new chapter in the RPO’s rich history with this community that I love so dearly.

The arrival of a new season brings a fresh opportunity for musical exploration. In my first Philharmonics season, we’ll cover a broad spectrum of music. Towering symphonic masterpieces, enchanting vocal repertoire—both large and small scale—and brand new works, never before been heard in Rochester, are combined to include something for everyone on each and every program. We welcome a dazzling array of guest artists, many of whom will be making their RPO debut, alongside familiar favorites. Above all, each program will showcase our world-class orchestra, which is the heart and soul of our 93-year tradition of musical excellence.

Jeff Tyzik has another sensational Pops lineup in store, with a wonderful mix of exciting new artists visiting us for the first time and much-beloved artists who will return to share their gifts with the Rochester community. Michael Butterman continues his excellent work on our OrKIDStra series, and we have a newly designed Sunday Matinee series at Hochstein, which will highlight music of the great masters—Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, and Mozart. Once again this year, we will present a number of special performances to complement our four core series. No matter what your particular musical taste, I guarantee you’ll find something that speaks to you!

We look forward to seeing you at Kodak Hall many times this season. Music is a universal language, able to communicate far beyond mere words, exploring the human condition in tremendous depth of emotion and expression. We are all better off with music in our lives and the energy of the audience is the key to unlocking the magic of a shared musical experience. The RPO’s bass trombonist is spotlighted in a concerto by Eastman School of Music alumnus Eric Ewazen. The program kicks off with the intimate grace of one of Mozart’s greatest early symphonies, written when the composer was just 18 years old.

Composed in the final year of his life, Strauss’ meditative farewell to the worldly realm is some of the most moving music ever written, and the culmination of his lifelong love affair with the soprano voice.
