How do I rent a locker?

Due to overwhelming demand for a limited number of lockers, we have implemented a locker lottery system for September. Starting August 1st you can register on-line for the locker lottery, names will be drawn the week of Sept. 7th. Just go to: www.marauders.ca and click on Locker Lottery. You will need to log-in and enter password for the on-line system.

Hours and Facility Orientation

Facility Hours of OperationThe following hours have been set aside for use of the Athletics & Recreation Complex facilities and services. Use of athletic facilities is allocated such that major university events, academic programs, inter-university athletics, intramural athletics and recreational programs have priority over community groups in respect to use of the facility. Please note that services are limited or unavailable during certain holiday periods and/or special events. Facility closures will be posted, in most cases, at least one week prior. While not anticipated, facility hours of operation are subject to change.

Rules - Play Safe

Please follow these basic rules while using the Athletic & Recreation Centre. Other A&R rules applicable to a specific area are posted throughout the building and must be followed.

1. All visitors should report to the Joan Buddle Service Desk. Service Staff may ask you to present proper ID. You may be asked to leave the building if you fail to provide the proper identification or proof of membership.

2. Recreation Members may keep articles locked in temporary day lockers only during period of facility use (rental lockers excepted). Lockers left overnight with locks attached will have their locks removed and contents will be secured by staff. There is a fee to retrieve secured articles. Management is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen personal property. We strongly recommend you secure all your belongings at all times in the facility.

3. Guests are welcome to use the Athletics & Recreation Centre but must be sponsored by a current member to purchase guest passes. Guest fee payments are made at the Service Desk.

4. Facility use privileges are non-transferable. Recreation/Pulse memberships are for use by purchasing member only. If a non-member is found fraudulently using a membership, both member and non-member will lose current and future membership privileges and the Student Code of Conduct protocols will be followed.

5. All personal belongings must be removed from rented lockers by the expiry date of your service. Any and all articles left behind are assumed unwanted by their owner and will be disposed of after two months in accordance with University policy regarding lost and found articles Management is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen personal property. We strongly recommend you secure all your belongings at all times in the facility.

6. It is important that participants wear appropriate foot wear when participating in the activity areas within the ARC. “Street Wear” shoes are not allowed in indoor play areas.

7. Inappropriate behaviour such as swearing and physical or verbal abuse will result in the immediate loss of all current and future membership privileges

8. For your safety please do not move equipment. Should you require any assistance with equipment (basketball hoops, soccer nets etc) please see the Customer Service Staff at the Joan Buddle Service Desk.

9. Please read all posted signage. Signs are posted to inform all users of rules, proper etiquette and upcoming events/closures etc in and around the facilities.

.PLAY SAFEWe want your experience in the Athletics and Recreation Complex and Stadium to be fun, enjoyable and good stress relief from the pressures of studying! There are many inherent risks of sport and activity. By following some simple safety rules you can help prevent injuries and play safe.

1) Have you eaten today? Make sure you eat a healthy meal and hydrate well before any kind of work out or activity (usually an hour or more prior to exercise)

2) Drink water while working out to prevent dehydration.

3) Warm up adequately for the sport or activity you are playing. If you need some ideas, speak to the personal trainers in the Pulse.

4) Wear all mandatory and recommended safety equipment for your sport – eye goggles are mandatory for playing squash, wear a helmet while skate boarding, cycling or in-line skating. Use safety harnesses during climbing activities.

5) In the locker rooms, wear flip flops in the shower and dry off after showering before entering the locker area.

6) In the Pulse, remember to put your equipment away after use and take extra precautions when putting dumbbells back onto the rack to avoid pinched fingers. Ask a trainer if you are unfamiliar with the use of a particular piece of equipment. They are there to help!

7) Moving soccer, basketball and volleyball nets can be dangerous if you are not trained. Please do not move them, just ask for assistance from the Service Desk.

8) Know your limit! Everyone has good days and bad days. Listen to your body and only push yourself when it is appropriate and take days off of activity when it makes sense for you.

Informal Sport and Recreation Times

To ensure the safety and security of all members and the facility, routine facility checks are carried out by McMaster Athletics and Recreation staff and proof of membership or day-pass purchase must be presented upon request. Failure to present proof of membership/purchase will result in removal from the facility.

BadmintonInformal badminton is offered in the Sport Hall only. Court use is based on a ‘first-come, first-serve’ basis.

Basketball Informal basketball is offered in the Sport Hall, Smith Gym and East Auxiliary Gym. Court use is based on a ‘first-come, first-serve’ basis.

*NEW* Boulder Climbing and Fitness Circuit, OutdoorEnjoy the benefits of working out outside with the installation of the TREKFIT Fitness Circuit and Rockwerx Boulders. Our outdoor fitness circuit and calisthenic rack is made for fitness enthusiasts who are beginning as well as those looking to take their training to the next level. The multiple bars and variations in angles and levels are organized in such a way that you are guaranteed fun, free, fitness. Two boulders provide climbing enthusiasts with the opportunity to climb with no harnesses, ropes or special equipment. Come experience Mac's very own "street workout" revolution. Open during regular facility hours and best of all, it’s free! Look for more information on classes on our website in September. Thank you to the McMaster Student Life Enhancement Fund for their generous funding of this project.

Field Sports, OutdoorInformal football, soccer, rugby and ultimate frisbee are permitted on the grass fields and artificial turf fields (excluding the Ron Joyce Stadium) when not in use by varsity teams, clubs, or rental groups during daylight hours, April - November. Meditation/MindfulnessThe new Mindfulness Centre is open daily for quiet meditation and prayer. New to meditation? See page 25 for FREE courses.

SkateboardingA variety of ramps will be available for use on selected dates and times throughout the fall. Skateboards are not provided. Helmets and wrist guards are required. Dates and times to be announced or call the Service Desk in September.

Soccer, IndoorInformal indoor soccer is offered Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00pm-4:00pm,January-MarchintheSmithGym.

Soccer, OutdoorOutdoor soccer is offered between April - November on Field B, Alumni Field, and 10-acre fields. In the event of inclement weather, fields may be closed without notice.

SwimmingInformal swimming is offered in the Ivor Wynne Centre Pool. The current schedule can be found in the Aquatics section of our website www.marauders.ca or on page 8.

Table TennisInformal table tennis is offered Mondays and Thursdays from 1:30pm-4:00pmon theWestCourt,SportHall. Four tablesare set-upand use is based on a "first-come, first-serve" basis.

Tennis, IndoorInformal indoor tennis is offered Mondays from 7:00am-12:00pm,January - March on the West Court, Sport Hall. Court reservations can be made 7 days in advance in person at the Joan Buddle Service Desk or by phone, 905-525-9140 ext. 24612.

AQUATICSAbsolutely Terrified Swimming Lessons for AdultsAre you absolutely terrified at the thought of swimming? This program is designed for adults who need special attention to overcome their fear of water. If you have had a bad experience in the water or you need a little 'TLC', this course is for you! You will receive private or semi-private instruction during a quiet time in the pool with patient instructors that have a passion for teaching people how to swim. You will learn basic water survival skills so you can play safe around the water or move on to learning swim strokes in the LSS Adult 1 and 2 levels. Space is very limited for this programme. Member $45.00 Non-member $80.00

CURLINGCurling Club - WomenThe McMaster Curling Club is a competitive club geared towards students withexperience curling. The team competes in OUA's and potentially CIS and beyond pending performance during competition. There are also several other exhibition tournaments against other schools in which the team will be competing. The team generally practices once a week together on Sunday nights throughout the curling season. In addition, exhibition games are regularly scheduled and the team may also enter a local club league for additional games (played mostly Wednesday nights). FIGURE SKATINGClub - Women and MenThe McMaster Figure Skating team is comprised of 20+ skaters, ranging in all Skate Canada levels and figure skating abilities. We have a great team environment, attending three competitions and multiple local exhibitions throughout the season. There are two streams within the team, competitive and development. The competitive team practices on-ice three times a week from

September to February. Participants on this team compete in Synchro and either Dance or FreeSkate events, ranging in level from Jr. Silver to Novice competitive. Previous competitive experience with Synchro, Dance, or Freeskate is highly recommended. The development team skates twice a week throughout the season and is designed for skaters wishing to improve their skating skills. The Pulse Rules and RegulationsThese rules and regulations have been designed to keep the centre clean, organized and safe. Please observe and follow all established rules. Disregarding these rules and regulations may result in the loss of membership privileges.

1) A fitness centre membership must be presented upon each entry to the facility. You will not be permitted in the Pulse without a membership. Your Pulse membership is not transferable. If you have forgotten your membership, a temporary day pass MUST be purchased at the Joan Buddle Customer Service or the Recreation Business Office.

2) All exercisers are responsible for ensuring they have a spotter during free weight exercises. Pulse Personal Trainers are available for spotting when it is requested.

3) All lifting must be done in a controlled manner. All drops must be controlled.

4) Proper athletic footwear must be worn. Bare feet, sandals, work boots or dress shoes are not acceptable. Shoes worn outside must be cleaned before entering the Pulse.

5) A full shirt with sleeves must be worn. Halter tops, tank tops, shirts bearing midriff or torn shirts are not permitted. Sleeveless unitards must be covered with a full shirt.

6) Shorts, short or long track pants, wind pants or tights are permitted. Trousers, jeans, and cutoffs and pants with zippers are not acceptable.

7) Gym bags, knapsacks, jackets, keys and other personal belongings are not allowed in the Pulse and cannot be stored at the front desk area. Lockers are available for day use or long-term rental.

8) No food, cans or glass bottles in the fitness facility. Only plastic or metal water bottles are permitted.

9) The use of cell phones/cameras is prohibited inside the Pulse. For special events and projects, contact the Fitness Coordinator for permission of cameras.

10) Under McMaster University regulations, smoking is not permitted in any of the university’s buildings or rooms.

11) Towel service can be purchased for your convenience at the Joan Buddle Service Desk or you may bring your own towel. A towel should be placed between you and the upholstery of the equipment while being used. You are required to clean off each piece of equipment after use with a towel and disinfectant sprayer, which is provided.

12) Bars are to be stripped of weight after each use. Return all weights and dumbbells to their proper places. Keep all weights in their designated areas, and do not take them into the fitness studio.

13) Please refrain from using the circuit for single station use.

14) Fitness classes are on a first come first serve basis. For safety purposes we have a cutoff based on the class type. Cutoffs will be at the discretion of the instructor.

15) Day/guest passes are available at the Joan Buddle Service Desk or the Rec Business Office. Members are responsible for their guest’s actions. Guests must be made aware of the Pulse’s rules and regulations and must sign a waiver upon entrance to the facility.

16) Treadmill usage is restricted to 30-minutes when all other treadmills are occupied.

17) Equipment can be signed out for use at the Pulse front desk. If the equipment is not returned the member’s account will be automatically charged. Please be sure to scan the equipment out and to have it scanned back in by our desk staff.

18) Conduction and/or the solicitation of personal business is prohibited in the Pulse. Only the Department of Athletics and Recreation staff may conduct personal training sessions in the Pulse.

19) The Department of Athletics and Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

20) Any members with special requests and/or needs are asked to please see the Fitness Coordinator prior to their first visit to the Pulse to make the necessary arrangements.

Group Exercise ClassesAre you looking for a complete workout… facilitated by a certified fitness professional… that is available every day… when you only have 30-50 minutes to spend… and most importantly you want it at no additional charge? Strength Challenge:You’ve heard time and again just how good strength training is, so why wait! This class will challenge you to strengthen every muscle group in your body. Your certified instructor will lead you through a multitude of exercises using free weights, body bars, steps, and resistance tubes. No experience is required, so join in on the challenge!

Combo Class Descriptions: *NEW CLASS* G- FIT:This class will exceed your fitness expectations! Utilizing the popular (HIIT) High intensity Interval Training principles will test both your cardiovascular and muscular strength. This high intensity circuit class is not for the faint of heart! ABC-All-in Body Conditioning:Join one of our certified instructors for a mix of hardcore cardio and resistance training. Yoga / Relaxation Descriptions:Hatha Yoga:This intermediate level yoga class consists of stretching postures in all directions, including the more active standing positions. This thorough work out will emphasize breathing control through pranayama breathwork, and will leave you with a more flexible and inviting spirit.

Traditional Yoga: Yoga is an ancient system of breathing practices, physical exercises, postures, and meditation intended to integrate the practitioner’s body, mind, and spirit. Feel free to bring your own yoga mat, and be sure to wear comfortable clothing.

There are no try outs and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. GYMNASTICSGymnastics ClubThe McMaster Gymnastics team offers recreational and competitive gymnastics programs for both men and women. The competitive stream consists of masters levels as well as a newly formed provincial team (women only). HAIDONG GUMDOHaidong Gumdo is the Korean art of swordfighting. Join our experienced instructor, Ben Jackel, in this introductory class in which basic sword techniques and stances will be taught and drilled with emphasis on control, endurance, speed and strength. A typical session begins with extensive warmup, then basic training, a series of repetitive cuts and stances, followed by traditional patterns (forms). This class is entirely non-contact, please come prepared for intensive physical exercise. HOCKEYIce Hockey Club- MenThe McMaster Men’s Hockey Club competes regionally in tournament series competition with Colleges and some Universities throughout Ontario. The schedule varies from year to year but usually consists of six or seven tournaments, practices leading up to tournaments and the occasional exhibition game. Over the past few years the club has been successful in winning several OCCCR events. Last year we had double entries in three tournaments so there is need for a sizable roster.

Look for sign up information at the club sport day during frosh week for tryout dates. KUNG FUShaolinKung Fu ClubThe McMaster Shaolin Kung Fu Association provides an active and supportive forum in which members develop and hone individual expression in the martial arts. This is achieved through extensive study of the ageless forms of Shaolin. The Association stresses a non-competitive atmosphere, instead focusing on a strive-together framework that incorporates study of both offensive and defen-sive techniques. Training sessions will generally consist of an intensive guided instructional period during which the students are exposed to the Shaolin com-bative methods. What do my student supplementary fees pay for in Athletics and Recreation?

Students* at McMaster University pay an Athletics and Recreation Supplementary Fee that is included in tuition. This fee is considered a Base Membership. A Base Membership provides a member access to the athletic facilities at McMaster (except the Pulse Fitness Centre and Feather Family Climbing Wall). Base Membership privileges include access to open gym time, indoor track, squash courts, pool, outdoor track, saunas, access to intramural programmes for a small fee, members rates for instructional programs and use of day lockers.

*some student groups (continuing education as an example) do not pay student supplementary fees to Athletics and Recreation.

ORCKA Tripping II This course builds on skills learned in Level 1 and teaches new theories, enhancing leadership abilities and providing participants with the tools to teach canoe tripping to others. There is a strong emphasis on leadership, risk management and teaching styles and techniques. There is a prerequisite for this course –candidates must have completed 25 nights of wilderness canoe tripping totalling a distance of 500km, at least six canoe trips in which the candidate was responsible for some of the organization and at least one wilderness canoe trip of five days or more. Certification from ORCKA for qualified participants. ORCKA Level 1 is not a prerequisite.

Overview

The Athlete’s Edge at McMaster o�ers a wide variety of training and development services needed to complete and care for an Athlete in all stages of development. We o�er Strength training to Athlete’s looking to build upon their sport skills and give them the edge above competition. This training, led by Steve Lidstone, our full time and student interns, can o�er both in and o�-season training for individuals, groups and teams of all sport backgrounds. First we assess the athlete, design individualized programs based o� of these results, and then train them through the programs. In addition to these training service, we also have our full functioning Sports Medicine Clinic to o�er our Athletes for all sport rehabilitation and injury maintenance needs including Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy, Athletic Therapy, as well as our Concussion Management and Nutrition Programs, to name a few. TAE KWON DOTae Kwon Do ClubTae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art and has been a recognized Olympic sport since the Sydney Summer Olympics in 2000. At McMaster, we practice the WTF/Olympic style of Tae Kwon Do. In a typical session, we practice basic to advanced Tae Kwon Do skills, patterns, sparring, and self-defense. TAI CHITai Chi - Beginner/Intermediate ComboOriginally founded as a martial art, Tai Chi has evolved into an aerobic mind-body fitness exercise of physical movements paced by slow diaphragmatic breathing. Tai Chi’s requisite mindful awareness of one’s breath-coordinated movements, dynamic balance & weight-shifting transitions imbue a relaxing sensorium of "meditation-in-motion". We offer the first half (13 TC forms) of the internation-ally standardized 24-forms simplified Yang style Tai Chi, which is the most widely practised TC routine in the world. A relatively shorter learning curve than the traditional long-form TC makes it suitable for beginners, intermediate-level Tai Chi practitioners or those with other previous martial arts experience. Our shortened, simplified TC allows better consolidation of TC skills & self-efficacy. TC improves balance, flexibility, lower extremity muscle strength, mental focus & facilitates relaxation.
