ANÁLISIS DE LA ZONA DE LANZAMIENTO SEGÚN EL DISEÑO DE LA
LÍNEA DE TRES PUNTOS EN MINIBASKET FEMENINO.
Arias, J. L.
Universidad Católica de San Antonio. Murcia.
posterior análisis (Macpherson, Rothman & Howard, 2006; Platanou & Geladas, 2006).
Igualmente en baloncesto ha ocurrido lo mismo en edades adultas (Husak, Poto & Stein, 1986;
Liu & Burton, 1999) y en las primeras etapas (Chase, Ewing, Lirgg & George, 1994;
Regimbal, Deller & Plimpton, 1992).

p = .000).

ANALYSIS OF THE SHOOTING AREA FOLLOWING THE DESIGN OF THE
THREE-POINT LINE IN FEMALE MINI-BASKETBALL.
INTRODUCTION
The Spanish Federation of Basketball (SFB) changed Mini-basketball rules for the
season 2005-2006. The inclusion of a three-point line delimited by a rectangular area, whose
purpose was to boost 3-point shots, stands out from these rules. Given these regulations,
several organizations have chosen to use the line, which delimits the area of the restricted zone
as a three-point line. Since they were conscious of the limitations of some game rules, in
several sports they have worried about its change and its subsequent analysis (Macpherson,
Rothman & Howard, 2006; Platanou & Geladas, 2006). Likewise, in basketball, the same
situation has happened with senior players (Husak, Poto & Stein, 1986; Liu & Burton, 1999)
and with at first stage of players (Chase, Ewing, Lirgg & George, 1994; Regimbal, Deller &
Plimpton, 1992). In Mini-basketball, at the competitive level, we have only found the study
published by Piñar (2005) as a point of reference. In this study, after including a three-point
line four meters away among other changes, we notice an increase in the number of shots from
outside the restricted zone. Therefore, the purpose of this study was: to examine how the two
modalities of the three-point line have effect on shooting areas.
METHOD
Participants
Sixty seven mini-basketball female players (age: M = 10.39 years, SD = 0.67) from six
teams participated in two championships. 1.642 ball possessions were examined during the
first championship and 1.669 ball possessions during the second one. Two inclusion criteria

Desde la base a la élite deportiva 7
were set: a) during the two championships the same female players should play and b) 30 days
before the second championship, the coaches should train with the rectangular three-point line
proposed by the SFB. Players’ parents and teams provided informed consent to participate in
this study.
Design
The observational methodology was applied through a follow up, ideographic,
multidimensional approach (Anguera, 2003) in order to examine: a) the three-point line
delimited by the area of the restricted zone (situation 1) and b) the three-point line delimited by
a rectangular area proposed by the SFB (situation 2). The criterion of shooting area was
compared in both situations. The following categories were established: Zone A, delimited by
the restricted area; Zone B, the gap between the restricted area and the three-point line
established by the SFB; and Zone C, the space outside the three-point line established by the
SFB.
Procedure
1. Devising of the category system and the register instrument from a Microsoft Excel
2003 worksheet along with the software Virtual Dub 1.6.15.
2. Digital recording of nine matches in each championship through two video cameras.
3. Preparation of the training manual and instructions for the observers.
4. Four observers’ training following the stages suggested by Anguera (2003).
5. Obtaining of the register’s reliability using the Kappa concordance coefficient, which
achieved values between .90 and .98.
6. Observation data collection.
Statistical Analysis
The statistical package SPSS 13.0. for Windows was used. Through the Mann-Whitney
U Test, it was examined if there were significant differences between the averages of the
compared criterion, paying attention to the two situations target of study. The correlations
-

Desde la base a la élite deportiva 8
between the criterion and the two situations were obtained using the Chi-Square test. The level
of significance was set at p < .05 and the results were reported at 99% confidence intervals.
RESULTS
According to the results (Table I), significant differences between the two situations
were found (Z = -3.56, p = .000). The relation between the situation 1 and the shooting area A
and C was direct, while the relation was reverse for the Zone B (2 = 19.85, d.f. = 3, p = .000).

one C Recount 37 21

DISCUSSION
From these results, 89.73% of total shots in the situation 1 were carried out from inside
the restricted area, while 89.16% of total shots in the situation 2. From Zone B, 12 shots more
were carried out in the situation 2 than in situation 1. And 16 shots more than in the situation 1
were executed with regard to the situation 2 from outside the three-point line established by the
SFB. Moreover, having into account the total number of shots made from the zone C in the two
situations, 69% of shots did not touch the hoop, so it seems necessary to move the three-point

line closer to the hoop in order to increase the success in shots. As for the shots made from
inside the restricted area, Piñar et al. (2003) remark some values of 69.5% in male Mini-
basketball. As long as Piñar (2005) finds 71.6% of shoots for 5x5 modality in female Mini-
basketball and 54.7% for 3x3 modality. Therefore, we can prove that, in Mini-basketball, the
shots outside the restricted area are slender and the far-off shots are nonexistent. Despite these
facts, on playing with the three-point line delimited by the restricted area, a larger number of
shots are made from inside the restricted area and from a distance greater than four meters,
what means a training approach, which was more appropriate to the needs and interests of the
stage.

3 puntos, y tiros libres (anotados y fallados), rebotes ofensivos, rebotes defensivos,

DIFFERENCES IN GAME-RELATED STATISTICS BETWEEN STARTERS
AND NONSTARTERS PLAYERS ACCORDING TO PLAYER’S POSITION IN
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL.
INTRODUCTION
The basketball research through game-related statistics analysis reflected that the
player’s game-related statistical profile varied according to player’s positions, probably
because the differences in players’ anthropometric characteristics conditioned the
distance they play from the basket (Sampaio, Janeira, Ibáñez, & Lorenzo, 2006b). And,
on the other hand, the team status (starters or nonstarters) also conditioned the players’
performance (Sampaio, Ibáñez, Lorenzo, & Gómez, 2006a). However, the available
literature is reduced and only conducted on men’s samples. Therefore, the purpose of
this study was to identify the basketball game-related statistics that best discriminate
between starters and nonstarters when related to player’s position in women’s
basketball.
METHOD
Archival data were obtained for all 17 playoff basketball games from the
Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) 2005 season. The data was
gathered by experts from the League. The game-related statistics included were:
minutes played, free-throws (both successful and unsuccessful), 2- and 3-point field-
goals (both successful and unsuccessful), offensive and defensive rebounds, blocks,
assists, fouls (committed and received), turnovers and steals.

The players were classified as starters (n = 284) or nonstarters (n = 172) as they
were selected or not for the starting five of the team. The sample were subdivided in
guards (as starters n = 127, or nonstarters n = 59), forwards (as starters n = 101, or
nonstarters n = 33), and centres (as starters n = 56, or nonstarters n = 20) as suggested
the available literature (Sampaio, et al., 2006b). Players whose participation in any
game was less than five minutes duration were excluded for the analysis. Each player’s
results in every game-related statistics were divided by player’s minutes on court,
resulting in derived rate variables. Results were analyzed through discriminant analysis.
Statistical significance was set to 5%.
RESULTS
The means, standard deviations and univariate differences of game-related
statistics for each group of basketball players are presented in table 1. In Table 2 are
presented the structure coefficients that describe the game-related statistical profiles that
differentiate starters and nonstarters performances for guards and forwards. However,
the function obtained for centres was non significant (2 = 18.14, p>.05).

DISCUSSION
The discrimination between starters and nonstarters may be influenced by
different factors such as the distance they play from the basket and the gender of the
sample studied. As suggested Sampaio, et al. (2006a) from an empirical perspective the
differences between both groups might be reflected in field-goals made. In fact, the
starters players who play farer from the basket (i.e., guards and forwards) showed better
values in 2- and 3-points field-goals made than the nonstarters. These variables are
offence-related and strongly associated with winning teams in women’s basketball
(Gómez, Lorenzo, Sampaio, & Ibáñez, 2006). This may suggest that starters guards and
forwards exhibit better shot execution and accurate decision-making than nonstarters
(Sampaio, et al., 2006a). The starters guards were also discriminated from nonstarters
guards by their lower number of blocks and steals. Both variables are defence-related
and reflect that during the playoff series the nonstarters have better defensive
performances than starters. This fact, increase the importance of nonstarters guards in
defensive tasks and in their participation during women’s basketball games (Oliver,
2004). On the other hand, forwards starters were also discriminated from forwards
nonstarters by their higher values in steals and their lower values in fouls committed.
These results show that starters have better offensive and defensive performance than
nonstarters (Sampaio, et al., 2006a). Also, the results reflect that the forwards are a
more flexible role with different contributions to team performance. Particularly,
starters players are more confidence and concious in their defensive readiness. And,
nonstarters players are less worried with the 6-fouls limit that exists in the WNBA,
probably because they play less time. Thus, they could play focusing their attention on
-

Desde la base a la élite deportiva
high defense pressure because they are not affected by their exclusion (Sampaio, et al.,
2006a).
One interesting finding from our results is the absence of significant differences
between starters and nonstarters centres. These players game occur near to the basket,
and are very focused on defensive rebounding and blocking, inside field-goals,
screening or drawing fouls (Sampaio, et al., 2006b). These results may reflect that in
women’s basketball the centres are very specialized. This could suggest that the
antropometric measures, physical fitness and game systems based in only one inside
centre play a special role in women’s basketball and allow to get good performances
with better rotations between starters and nonstartes centres.
Information obtained in this study could help basketball coaches selecting
players and also taking decisions during women’s basketball games. Specially, during
the playoffs these decisions should provide immediate impact over team’s performance
allowing to understand the differences between starters and nonstarters, and better
regulate and prepare competitions.

junior (28.1%) (Sillero, Refoyo, Lorenzo, & Sampedro, 2007).

Harris, 1984).

COMPARING SOME PERCEPTIVE ASPECTS OF SPANISH EBA AND
EUROPEAN FIBA BASKETBALL OFFICIALS.
INTRODUCTION.
The decisions of the basketball officials are based on an appropriate visual
perception of all the match elements (M. Sillero & Sampedro, 2004). Some of their
perceptive characteristics, however, are not strictly visual but they require, for example,
cognitive processes like decision making and concentration on the task.
Most of the information from the area where officials focus their sight is obtained
from the dominant eye, while the non-dominant eye provides them with additional
information, which for example allows three-dimensional vision. As is the case with
players of different sports (Steinberg, Frehlich, & Tennant, 1995), the dominant eye of the
official plays a relevant role in certain aspects of the refereeing technique, such as taking
the best position so that the match continues in the most appropriate way.
Simple visual reaction time is an important visual ability for officials, who have to
react to the players’ actions as quickly as possible. However, most of the actions in
basketball are not predictable; what the official really needs is therefore a good choice
reaction time, which always has to be longer than the simple reaction time because it
requires certain time for information processing. According to Fitt’s law (Schmidt & Lee,
2005), the length of this reaction time is analogous to the number of options needed to be
considered in the decision.
-
CIB’2007. IV Congreso Ibérico de Baloncesto
Desde la base a la élite deportiva
Finally, having good visual abilities is not enough if the official is unable to
maintain the concentration during the whole match. This capability will help him/her to be
isolated from the disturbances generated by the audience and to focus on the match.
MATERIAL AND METHOD
This study was initially performed on 26 International Professional FIBA officials,
who were participating in the FIBA Europe Clinic for Potential Referees (Gran Canaria, 14-
18th and 21-25th June, 2007). To avoid the influence of visual deficiencies on the results,
officials with Snellen visual acuities below 0.9 were removed from the original sample; the
final sample was therefore composed by 22 officials (20 male and 2 female) aged 32.5
years in average (SD = 4.7 years). In order to compare these data with a similar sample,
non-published data from Spanish EBA officials with Snellen visual acuities higher than 0.9
(24 subjects, 23 male and 1 female, aged 31.0; SD = 3.4) have been considered.
We used the Knudson and Kluka method (1997) to determine the dominant eye, and
some of the tasks from the “Harris Test of Lateral Dominance” reported by Rigal (1992)
were used for assessing the subjects’ lateral dominance. Using the Visual Lab programme
(Cedrus Corporation, San Pedro, CA), two tests were designed, one for simple visual
reaction time (SRT) and other for choice visual reaction time (CRT) (Sillero, Refoyo,
Lorenzo, & Sampedro, 2007). The concentration was assessed by recording the amount of
numbers recognized by the subject from a 10x10 concentration grid in 1 min (Harris &
Harris, 1984) and in 3 min. SPSS 9.0 was used to run a t-test for two independent samples
(FIBA and EBA officials) for concentration results, and a Chi-square test for dominances.
-
CIB’2007. IV Congreso Ibérico de Baloncesto
Desde la base a la élite deportiva
RESULTS
We found that 91.9% of the FIBA officials were right-handed and only 9.1% were
left-handed. However, only 45.5% of the whole group was right-eye dominant and 54.5%
had left-eye dominance; the crossed dominance rate was therefore 54.5%. In a similar way,
4.1% of the EBA officials were left-handed and 95.8% right-handed, while 50% of them
had right or left dominant eye. The EBA officials crossed dominance rate was 45.8%. A
Chi-square Test showed non-significant differences (χ2 = 0.35; p = 0.55) for crossed
dominances between FIBA and EBA officials.
The FIBA officials’ averaged results for the SRT were 208 ms (SD = 46.7) and 569
ms for the CRT (SD = 125.1), with a mistakes rate of 0.5 over 5 trials (SD = 0.2). In the
concentration grid, FIBA officials found 9.1 numbers (#) (SD = 4.5) in 1 min and 28.6 #
(SD = 5.6) in 3 min. In the same test, the EBA officials scored 9.7 # (SD = 3.1) in 1 min
and 26.9 # (SD = 4.3) in 3 min. T-test results pointed out non-significant differences for
concentration results (t1min = -0.54, p = 0.59; t3min = -1.11, p = 0.27).
DISCUSSION
The rate of left handed FIBA officials (9.1%) agrees with the 10% reported by
Perelle and Erhman (2005) in normal population. The Chi-square analysis indicates that
the results for Spanish EBA officials (4.1%) were comparable to the FIBA officials.
However, the high incidence of crossed dominance in FIBA (54.5%) and EBA (45.8%)
officials is quite intriguing. Crossed laterality is a fairly unusual condition and it has been
-
CIB’2007. IV Congreso Ibérico de Baloncesto
Desde la base a la élite deportiva
related in the past to intelligence and psychomotor deficits (Sulzbacher, Thomsom, Farwell,
Temkin, & Holubkov, 1994) and language problems (Lamm & Epstein, 1999). However,
we have previously registered high rates of crossed dominances in Spanish junior
basketball players (28.1%) (Sillero, Refoyo, Lorenzo, & Sampedro, 2007). The crossed
dominance has been linked to performance in some sports (Steinberg, Frehlich, & Tennant,
1995), and we think that it could be strongly related to good performance in refereeing.
Further research should be done on this point.
Unfortunately, we could not compare the reaction time results of FIBA officials
with EBA officials. However, SRT results (208 ms) agree with data reported in literature
for different sports (Galilea & Roca, 1983), and they are slightly higher than data recorded
with the same protocol in younger high-level basketball players (230 ms) (Sillero, Refoyo,
Lorenzo, & Sampedro, 2007).
Surprisingly, comparing the CRT results of the FIBA officials (569 ms; mistakes
rate = 0.5 over 5 trials) with the high-level junior basketball players (470 ms; mistakes rate
= 0.9 over 5 trials), they can pose a conservative strategy in the decision making in
officials, who are forced to avoid mistakes at the expense of a certain delay in the decision
making process.
Concentration results for FIBA officials are not so good (9.1 #/1 min and 28.6 #/3
min), but they are comparable with the Spanish EBA officials (9.7 #/1 min and
26.9 #/3 min). However, concentration can be easily trained to reach normal values, which
are higher than 20 numbers in one minute on this test (Harris & Harris, 1984).

baloncesto utilizan dichas estrategias formativas.

Me he pasado horas y horas hablando de baloncesto, movimientos y escribiendo

THE DEVELOPMENT OF COACHES THROUGH INTERACTION; THE
CASE OF BASKETBALL COACHES’ COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE.
INTRODUCTION
The learning process of coaches may involve: - i) formal and non-formal
education; ii) observing other coaches; iii) the transmission of information; iv)
experience; iv) the competition itself; and v) the existence of a mentor figure (e.g.;
Abraham, Collins, & Martindale, 2006; Jones, Armour, & Potrac, 2003). Cushion,
Armour and Jones (2003) suggest that most of what a coach learns is through the
interaction with the development context as well as through informal sources. Nelson,
Cushion, and Potrac (2006), reflect that such informal learning takes place through
“communities of practice”.
According to Wenger, McDermott, and Snyder (2002), a community of practice
(CoP) is a group of people -coaches in this case- that shares a common objective, a
passion in a specific activity and that deepen their knowledge and experience through
interaction. Members of CoP work together with a sense of mission; they make a
commitment to development and develop a common repertoire of strategies and
development activities, all of which generate coherence. Generally speaking, coaches
belonging to the same club or team have the potential to form CoP, but only if they
decide to learn through the said medium (Culver & Trudel, 2006).
As it is very difficult to develop this kind of learning environment in the current
state of sport, coaches use other forms of interaction and knowledge sharing. Hence, in
an informal knowledge network, coaches meet and exchange information; however their
-

discussions are informal and are characterised by less depth because there is no
common objective (Culver & Trudel, 2006).
The aim of the present study is to establish if expert coaches in basketball make
use of these educational strategies.
METHOD
The methodology used in our study is of the qualitative kind. The instrument
used was the semi-structured interview (Patton, 2002). Sixteen Spanish expert
basketball coaches were interviewed; all were men and holders of Spain’s highest-
ranking basketball trainer title. In addition, they all had experience in the men’s
basketball professional top league and/or experience in the management of national
teams (senior or young people). The selection of the interviewees was based on the
following criteria: i) having 10 years of experience; ii) an academic education related to
basketball; iii) being considered as a prestigious trainer and iv) having trained teams and
players at an international professional level. The analysis of the data was carried out
according to Côté, Salmela, Baria, and Russell (1993). The reliability was established
by the classification of a random sample, which was carried out by an independent
expert.
RESULTS
The relationship with other colleagues in the profession was regarded as a highly
valued learning medium. Almost always, it’s an informal relationship developed in the
course of trips or competition activity.
-

I’ve spent hours and hours talking about basketball, sets and noting things down.
(Subject 2).
In the case of the interviewed coaches, some reflected the existence of a
community of practice, around which their development took place. These coaches had
belonged to the same club for many years.
We could go on talking for days; the conversations were endless. We had to
defend and argue our theories to the other colleagues. This led us to much new learning
and insight. (Subject 6).
DISCUSSION
Various studies (e.g.; Gilbert & Trudel, 2001; Jones et al., 2003) show that
coaches usually contact other colleagues or specialists when they require information.
Our results confirm that coaches consider the conversations and debate in relation to all
topics related to basketball that take place during trips or pre-games as very important.
Gilbert and Trudel (2001) state that when coaches have the opportunity to
discuss aspects of their profession, such conversations have in fact great significance for
them. According to Cassidy and Rossi (2006) coaches perceive such conversations as
very valuable for their own professional development.
However, our results basically show that such relationships are formed in an
informal, loosely structured manner resembling more an informal knowledge network
than a practice community (Culver & Trudel, 2006).
Hence, if the development of coaches is the result of a social and interactive
process, it will be necessary to design learning environments favourable to knowledge
acquisition through the said interaction. Furthermore, the relationship with other

coaches is a highly regarded learning medium. It can be argued hence that communities
of practice, as well as informal knowledge networks, can be considered to be adequate
learning mediums catering for the needs of coaches.

responsabilidades (Ward, Smith, Makasci, y Crouch, 1998; Crouch, Ward y Patrick,
1997; Ward, Smith y Sharpe (1997).

Carlson y
Hastie (1997), Ward, Smith y Sharpe (1997), Crouch, Ward y Patrick (1997), Ward,
Smith, Makasci, y Crouch (1998), Dyson (2001), Johnson y Ward (2001).

EFFECTS OF TRANSFERRING RESPONSABILITIES ON BASKETBALL SPORT LEARNING
INTRODUCTION
Last years several teaching models, which have been focused on aspects such as
pupils participation and their capacity to take some responsibilities in their teaching-
learning process, have been developed.
So, during the nineties, several studies appeared, from an ecologic point of view,
where pupils took a serial of responsibilities (Ward, Smith, Makasci, and Crouch, 1998;
Crouch, Ward and Patrick, 1997; Ward, Smith and Sharpe, 1997). In all of them a
meaningful growth in correct tests of sports like volleyball, basketball, badminton, and
football was produced.
Other authors like Johnson and Ward (2001), who used the tutoring between
equals, and Dyson (2001) found in their studies that transferring responsibilities in the
teaching-learning process had a positive influence on motor skills learning in basketball
and volleyball, so as in the interaction between pupils.
MATERIALS AND METHOD
Subjects
Twenty-eight pupils of the second course of Higher - Secondary Education aged
between seventeen and eighteen years participated during fifteen sessions and the
content to be developed was basketball. Four of them took responsibilities in the
