dear friends

What a great pleasure and privilege it has been to curate the festival and season outlined in this calendar! Early Music Vancouver plays a unique and increasingly large role in our region’s cultural life and I am thrilled to be a part in defining its continued success and evolution. We remain committed to casting works from musical history into fresh light and creating unique moments in time.

This calendar unveils a new logo and design for EMV — one that carries forward the tradition of visual richness that our audiences have come to expect from our materials. Our new logo demonstrates an ongoing commitment to great music of the past while acknowledging that whatever we present must transcend time and touch people today. The partial representation of a circular canon from the 16th century evokes the idea of layered voices from our past still resonating in harmony today.

Why flowers? Flowers, and roses in particular, are associated with passion, perfection, life, love, ephemera, fragility and the passage of time. A flower, like a live musical performance, exists most vividly for only a brief moment and then fades; its beauty is momentary yet eternal. We would like to thank Vancouver photographer Alex Waterhouse-Hayward, whose exquisite scans of roses from his garden inspired this calendar, and David Carlin for his invaluable help in choosing botanical images.

Warmest thanks to you, our audiences, and closest supporters, for your generosity and continued interest in EMV. I look forward to seeing you at a concert soon.

Turning 80 this year, Colin Tilney is a giant in early music: one of the first musicians to bring historically-informed performance to the general concert-goer’s awareness, and one of the few still actively performing today. He’ll perform “Quinque” by the South African composer Priaulx Rainier, Bach’s 6th English Suite, and elegant works by 18th-century French clavecinistes. Presented in collaboration with the Queer Arts Festival.

Hot on the heels of a performance by a grand master of early music, we bring you a concert featuring a rising star. Renowned soprano Ellen Hargis curates this recital of Rameau cantatas and instrumental works, performing the famous “Orphée” cantata and lending her guidance and expertise in this elegant music to young mezzo-soprano Sylvia Szadovszki in her first appearance with Early Music Vancouver.

Two venerated composers, two eminent soloists, and two distinguished instruments. This shared recital explores the blurring of the lines between lute and harpsichord repertoire in the eighteenth century, when lutenists imitated harpsichord music — and vice versa. Our exploration begins in Italy, continues to France, and finishes in Germany with a tête-à-tête between two compositional masters: Sylvius Leopold Weiss and Johann Sebastian Bach.

After last summer’s groundbreaking performance of “Israel in Egypt” and the critical acclaim lavished on 2012’s “Orlando”, we’ve selected another extraordinary work from Handel’s oeuvre for our 2014 Festival centrepiece. Touring to the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival before coming to Vancouver — a first for EMV — this production will reach greater heights of artistic expression than ever before. In the 17th century, Roman composers were surrounded by the remains of one of the greatest civilizations the world has ever known, so it’s no surprise that their texts and music explore the passing of time and the ephemeral nature of physical beauty and pleasure. From the time of Christianity’s introduction into Europe until the end of the first millennium, apocalyptic images of the End of Days and the Last Judgement were widespread. In this programme, Sequentia explores the musical world of these surprising, powerful texts, some of which survive only as fragments, including German verses describing the terrible final day and a harrowing portrayal of the pagan Ragnarök, when ‘Muspell’s People’ and the armies of Surt and Loki launch their final, deadly assault on the northern European gods. Working closely with internationally renowned American tenor Michael Slattery, Montreal’s La Nef lend some of John Dowland’s music a simple Celtic flavor and breathe life into the possibility that one of the greatest English composers was actually an Irishman.

Since graduating from Juilliard, Michael Slattery has enjoyed an exciting international career. He has worked with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival, the French National Orchestra in Paris, the Akademie für Alte Musik in Berlin, and with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. Career highlights include Peter Sellars’ Tristan Project at Lincoln Center, the title role in Bernstein’s Candide at Royal Festival Hall in London, and Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at the Châtelet Theater in Paris, the Staatsoper in Berlin, and at Glimmerglass. His solo discs “The Irish Heart”, and “Secret and Divine Signs” received critical acclaim from Gramophone Magazine and Five Star ratings from BBC Music Magazine and Classic FM. This boundary-crossing programme features early and traditional musicians exploring some of the roots of the United States’ folk and popular music. “Old-time” songs are some of America’s own early music. In the mid-to-late 1800s, America witnessed a surge in publications of “popular” music: Civil War songs, slave songs, cowboy songs, minstrel plays and parlour songs, along with hymns and revival tunes. “An American Tune” spans this half-century, tracing particularly the path of old world British Isles folk music to the isolated rural areas of the United States. Catherine Webster (soprano) and Stephen Stubbs (lute, guitar and conductor) have spent careers based on the exploration of 17th and 18th century European music traditions and are now turning their interest to some of the first popular music of their own country.
