It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the historic sixth season

of Missouri Mavericks hockey. Historic because of the new adventure that

awaits the Mavs for the 2014-15 season!

This season comes with great excitement as the Mavs have joined the ECHL,

the Premier AA hockey league in North America, and are eager to showcase

the best fans in the hockey world to new faces in new places.

Last season came with great accomplishment as the organization wasrewarded with its fourth consecutive Franchise of the Year honor and on the

ice, secured a franchise record 44 wins and the CHLs Governors Cup for the

most regular season points in the league (90 points).

But as we turn the page and look forward to new rivalries, new challenges and a new leader in our new

head coach, former NHL star Richard Matvichuk, we are gracious and humbled to have all of the Orange

Army by our side joining us in the quest for the Mavericks first Championship.

We strive to give you the best entertainment experience coupled with a successful franchise that you are

proud to support with unmatched character and community presence.

We look forward to a memorable, competitive and exciting season and thank you for your support!

    Go Mavs,

This season marks The New Era in history for the Missouri Mavericks as we join the newly expanded ECHL. Our new league hasgrown to include 28 teams in 20 states and one Canadian province as the ECHL begins its 27th season of play.

The ECHL was founded in 1988 with five teams spanning four states. Since then the ECHL has grown to encompass teams from coast-

This marks the 13th consecutive season with more than 50 former players on NHL opening-day rosters. This season our Mavs will

compete with six of our former rivals from the Central Hockey League in the Central Division of the ECHL. The Missouri Mavericks,

along with the Allen Americans, Brampton Beast, Quad City Mallards, Tulsa Oilers, Rapid City Rush, and Wichita Thunder were ap-

proved as expansion teams by the ECHL on October 7th of this year.

These additions strengthen our base in the center of the country and give the ECHL, for the first time, a truly national presence,

    said League Commissioner Brian McKenna.

This season the Mavericks begin the quest to capture the Kelly Cup Championship.

    Are you ready Mavs fans?

    By Bill Althaus

    Special to the Missouri Mavericks

    Want to see Missouri Mavericks

    coach Richard Matvichuk smile?

Just ask him about newly acquired

    forward Josh Brittain, whose two-

    goal performance Sunday at the

    Independence Events Center helped

snap a three-game losing streak as

the Mavericks went on to claim a

    heart-stopping 4-3 shootout victory.

What do I like about Josh

Brittain? a grinning Matvichuk said, repeating the question. Everything!

Hes been great since we got

him. Hes a new guy in the locker

    room, and hes already displaying

leadership skills and on the ice, well,

you cant ask for much more than

hes given us in the three

    games hes been here

    Brittain split last

    season between the

    Reading Royals and

    the AHLs Hershey Bears. The

24-year-old native of Milton, Ont., led

    the Royals with six game-winning

goals. He set a team-record with

    three consecutive game-winning

    goals from February 28th-March 7th.

    While Lindsay Sparks shootout

goal proved to be the game winner

and David Rutherford netted the first

goal of the shootout, their heroics

would not have been possible had

it not been for Brittains two-goal

performance including the game-tying goal with just 51 seconds left

    in the third period.

Before the game, we had a

    players-only meeting, Brittain said.

Im a new guy on the team, but I

just said that if the skaters skate,

the passers pass and the shooters

shoot basically, if we just do our

job were going to be fine.

    I was impressed when Coach

Matvichuk came in before thegame and said, Im going to leave

it up to you guys. And he left,

and we talked and it was a

    great talk. Even though

    it took three periods to

    get the game tied and

    a shootout to win it,

    I really thought we

    were going to win that

    game.

I havent been with the team that

long, but this was an emotional win,

a great win. We needed a win after

the way wed been playing and now

we need to build on this.

    Brittain, acquired by the Mavs

from Kalamazoo earlier in the week,

scored the first goal of the game. His

    second goal came after Matvichuk

    pulled goalie Mike Clemente from

    the net with 1:21 left.

Honestly, the puck came my way

and I was able to shoot it and getthe game-tying goal, Brittain said.

When I got traded here, I heard a

lot about the Mavericks and Coach

Matvichuk, and it was all good.

And I heard a lot about the fans,

and having that many fans standing

and cheering for you late in the (4-3

shootout win) game made it easy to

    maintain your energy level.

We can thank our fans for helping

us win that game. Im still the newguy, but I love it here. I cant think of

    a better place to play.

FREQUEN TLY ASKE D QUESTION S

What is the puck made of?

The puck is made of vulcanized rubber and is three inches in diameter and one inch

thick, weighing about six ounces. It is frozen before entering play to make it bounceresistant.

    What about deflections?

Deflections arent just luck. Players practice redirecting shots by standing at the side of the

net and knocking a shot from the outside past the goalie into another area of the goal.

    How thick is the ice?

The ice is approximately 3/4 thick and is usually kept at 16 degrees Fahrenheit for the

proper hardness. The thicker the sheet of ice becomes, the softer and slower it is.

What are the standard dimensions of the rink? The standard is 200 by 85, although some do vary.

Can the puck be kicked in for a goal?

Not intentionally. However, if a puck is deflected off a skate or off a players body and

no overt attempt is made to throw it or kick it in, a goal is allowed.

Who gets credited for an assist?

The last player or players (no more than two) who touch the puck prior to the goal

scorer are awarded assists. For example, if player A passes to player B who passes to

player C who scores a goal, players A and B get assists.

Why do goalies frequently come out of in front of their net?

Usually when a goalie leaves the area immediately in front of the goal, it is to reduce

the shooting area, cut down the angle of the shooter or for the offensive player to

release his shot before he would like to. After coming out of the net, the goalie is

usually backing up slowly in an attempt to get the shooter to commit himself first.

Why doesnt the referee stop fights?

First, it is his job to watch what is going on and determine who should be penalized.

Also, it is quite hazardous in close during a fight and because he is in sole control of

the game, he has to protect himself from injury.

How are the markings - the red and blue lines, goal lines, crease and face-

off circles - applied to the ice?

The ice is built up to a half-inch thickness by spraying water over the concrete floor,

which has the freezing pipes embedded into it. Then the markings are painted on,

after which additional water is sprayed to coat the markings and build the ice to the

    prescribed thickness.

    Are all sticks alike?

Far from it. Just as baseball players have individually personalized bats, so, too, do

hockey players have their own patterned sticks. Flexibility, the angle of the blade,

weight, etc., vary from player to player.
