Federal funds

MTA Capital Construc-tion President Michael Horodniceanu said $1.27 billion of the $1.4 billion it cost to complete the station came from fed-eral funds, including the largest stimulus package awarded to date. An additional $847 million came from a 9/11 appro-priation from Congress, and $130 million from the MTA in local funds.

Fulton Center opens aft er series of delays

After the sun comes up today, commuters using Lower Manhattan’s Fulton Center subway station can expect a brighter, more spacious commute.

The main entrance, at Fulton Street between Broadway and John Street, opens to riders at 5 a.m. today. The center connects the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, J, Z and R lines, and it will eventually extend to the World Trade Center and PATH trains. With 27 entrances, wider corridors and new pedestri-an traffic flows, officials say the 300,000 daily commut-ers will move more quickly

through the station. The main entrance fea-

tures a glass pavilion with multiple levels and wind-ing staircases. Installation “Sky Reflector-Net,” by James Carpenter, allows natural light to pour in be-low street levels, using 81 glass diamond-shaped pan-els to let the light in.

The station has 52 digi-tal screens throughout to display ads and emergency

information. It boasts 10 escalators and 15 elevators.

On Sunday afternoon, the MTA hosted a tour at-tended by elected officials, MTA chairs, community leaders and architects.

“Welcome to New York’s next great public space … something New York has never seen be-fore,” said Thomas F. Pren-dergast, chairman and CEO of the MTA. “The center

is an important symbol for New York in so many ways.”

In addition to highlight-ing the visually stunning atrium, dignitaries spoke on how Fulton Center is a symbol of Downtown’s resilience and revival after 9/11.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer called the station a “re-minder to come out of the ashes but never forget.”

“Who would have thought, in those dark days after 9/11, when we were breathing poisons, and the place was covered in white dust and debris, that Down-town would recover as it has … that 40,000 more people live here, that it’s a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week community?” Congress-man Jerrold Nadler asked.

of kiosks, shops and offi ce

Center, and will be leased

out by Westfi eld. Tenants

start in the new year.

• While giving reporters a tour of the new facility, Michael Horodniceanu, MTA Capital Construc-tion president, said that

the project fi nished with about $30 million left over and that the funds will return to the MTA.

• When asked about the extensive delays of the center, which was origi-nally slated to open in 2007, Horodniceanu said that one delay can throw a whole project off .

The MTA said more digital screens that assist riders with planning their trip will be ready to go by the end of the year.

There are 30 stations in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens that have the interactive screens, called an “On the Go Travel Station,” and the MTA said 153 more of the screens will be ready to use by the end of 2014.

The screens are funded by a public-private partner-ship between New York City Transit, Outfront Me-

dia and Control Group NYC. The project began as a pilot program three years ago. According to the MTA, some 1.2 million riders have access to the digital transit information every day.

“The On the Go Travel Station network is one of the most ambitious in-sys-tem customer information initiatives we’ve undertak-en since the introduction of our subway countdown clocks,” MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prend-ergast said. “Having a digi-tal platform for customers to obtain travel informa-tion, while simultaneously giving us the ability to com-municate with them, is a huge step forward in our efforts to provide timely information to customers at the point of transit deci-sion-making.” METRO

It’s the most wonderful time of the year again — when Metro launches To-ny’s Metro Magic, our toy drive for underprivileged children in New York, Bos-ton and Philadelphia.

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the ap-peal, which was renamed last year in memory the man who oversaw the project for more than three years, Tony Metcalf, Metro’s longest-running editor-in-chief, who passed away in July 2013 from co-lon cancer at the age of 50.

There was nothing Tony

loved more than to see the smile on the countless children’s faces each year as they opened gifts gen-erously donated by Metro readers.

“Year after year, we are astonished at how well Metro readers respond to Tony’s Metro Magic,” said Metro CEO and Publisher Yggers Mortensen. “It is wonderful to see the gifts stack up at our Metro of-

fices and to realize that we are all helping to make a needy child’s holiday more joyful.”

Once again this year, we’ll be asking readers to contribute what they can to Tony’s Metro Magic, which, since its inception, has donated thousands of toys to children for whom there would otherwise be no gifts over the holidays.

In conjunction with

Toys For Tots, Metro has es-tablished a wish list at the Toys “R” Us website that readers can access by going to www.metro.us and click-ing on the Tony’s Metro Magic logo.

From there, just choose the toys you wish to do-nate, pay online using Toys “R” Us’ secure payment sys-tem, and your gifts, along with your name attached, will be delivered to Metro’s

offices. So starting today, and

throughout November and December we will be re-minding readers to donate both in print and online at www.metro.us.

This season, we hope you will remember the children who will spend the holidays in shelters or who may not have gifts to open. Even a small gift makes big difference. METRO

Tony’s Metro Magic brings holiday cheer Toy drive. Today Metro kicks off its fi fth annual drive, which invites you to help brighten a child’s holiday.

Gifts for kids

Who you’re helping In addition to Toys for Tots, Metro New York teams up with The Partnership for the Homeless, a local non-profi t that provides a number of resources to get homeless families into shelters and to help them with hous-ing and job training. Their annual holiday party provides meals and toys for more than 450 kids. This is the third year in a row that Metro will work with them. There are more than 22,000 children who live in the city’s shelter system.

“With a toy dona-tion you can help The Partnership for the Homeless transport that child to her holi-day dreams for at least a day,” said Arnold Cohen, president and CEO of The Partnership of the Homeless, dur-ing the Tony’s Metro Magic drive last year. METRO

“Everybody agrees the immigration system’s broken. And we’ve been talking about it for years now in terms of fi xing it.”Obama, in the interview, according to a CBS transcript

President Barack Obama de-fended his plan to use exec-utive powers to implement some immigration reforms, saying in an interview on Sunday he had waited long enough for Congress to act.

Republican leaders warned that an ease to some restrictions on un-documented immigrants would “poison the well” or would be “a red flag in front of a bull.”

The meeting came after the Democrats were pun-ished in midterm elections last Tuesday. Republicans seized the Senate and kept a majority in the House of Representatives, in what Obama said was a message from voters who held him responsible for how Wash-ington worked, or didn’t.

In an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Obama said he had watched while the Senate produced a bi-partisan immigration re-form bill, only to have it not taken up by House Republi-can Speaker John Boehner.

Obama said he had told Boehner if he could not get it done by year’s end, the White House was going to have to take steps to im-prove the system.

He said borders need to be secure, the legal im-migration system needs to be more efficient and there needs to be a path to legal status for the 11 million un-documented immigrants. REUTERS

As the top federal pros-ecutor in Brooklyn, Lynch has been tough on terror-ism and cyber crimes.

She received a polite response so far from Repub-licans, but Obama urged the Senate to act quickly on the nomination.

The Senate will remain in Democratic control until January. A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Democrats

Two Americans freed Saturday by North Korea after a secret mission by a top U.S. intelligence offi-cial to secure their release were reunited with loved ones after arriving at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.

“It’s been an amazing two years, I learned a lot,” Kenneth Bae, a Korean-American tour guide and missionary detained two years ago, told media upon his arrival at the

base, the Associated Press reported.

Bae and Matthew Miller, who had been sentenced to years of hard labor for commit-ting “hostile” acts against the Kim Jong Un regime, traveled to the U.S. ac-companied by American intelligence chief James Clapper, who negotiated the men’s freedom in a one-day trip to North Ko-rea, the first by a senior U.S. official in about two years.

The Obama adminis-tration’s efforts to free the men should not be viewed as a “diplomatic signal,” said a senior U.S. official traveling with President Barack Obama to Asia, who spoke on the condition of not being identified. REUTERS

Nurse who fought Maine Ebola quarantine moving out of state

A nurse who treated Ebola patients in West Africa and publicly fought quarantine orders in New Jersey and Maine after returning to the United States last month has decided to move away from her home state, a newspaper in Maine reported.

Kaci Hickox and her boyfriend, Ted Wilbur, plan to leave Maine after Nov. 10, or the expiration of the monitoring period

for the virus’ 21-day incu-bation, according to the Press Herald newspaper.

Wilbur did not say where the couple planned to move. “We’re going to try to get our lives back on track,” he told the newspaper on Friday.

Wilbur and Hickox could not immediately be reached for comment.

After criticizing New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie over the forced isolation, she was driven to her boyfriend’s home in Fort Kent, in Maine’s far north, where Gov. Paul LePage ordered her quarantined even though she had tested negative for the virus. REUTERS

Valeria Lukyanova, the self-proclaimed “Human Barbie,” is nursing facial wounds after reportedly be-ing attacked last week out-side her home in Odessa, Ukraine. The 29-year-old model suffered swollen lips and minor head injuries following an assault on Halloween night that she alleged was the result of a two-year hate campaign by anonymous stalkers. Metro spoke to Lukyanova, who gained worldwide fame for her doll-like face.

How did the attack happen?I came back home from a shop with bags and entered the door code when two men rushed from the dark and attacked me. They were waiting,

I heard footsteps but did not realize that something like this could happen. I wanted to run, but they tethered me with a rope. I tried to free myself, but they cut my lips. I screamed. They hit me on the head. Then the second man hit me in the jaw. Then they ran away. Later in the hospital doctors told me that they had to remove two of my teeth. I did not see who attacked me. I only know that they were two men who were as

small as I am.

You have had threats in the past, so why didn’t you have insurance?I receive threats every day. But still nobody dared to do something to me. I’m sure that this attack was made by one of my detractors on the Internet. Because in I never have any conflicts. I didn’t have insurance, because I had no idea this would happen.

Have you recovered? My “outside” is already in order. But my “inside” is still recovering. The doctors had to stitch something on the inside of my mouth. I do use makeup, but no one can see it because I wear sunglasses. DMITRY BELYAEV, METRO WORLD NEWS

Cloud of pot smoke puts Colo. school on partial lockdown A high school in Colorado, one of the fi rst two U.S. states to legalize recreational marijuana use, was put on partial lockdown on Friday after a student’s weed pipe fi lled a class-room with pot smoke, the school said.

The smoke from the device, known as a “gravity bong” or “bucket,” was released into a classroom at about 9:45 a.m. at Ad-ams City High School in Commerce City, a northeastern suburb of Denver.

“As a precautionary measure, our students were placed on a modi-fi ed lockdown to limit movement throughout the school,” the school said in a statement, adding that teenagers who had been near the device were examined by medical personnel. REUTERS

Animal rights group PETA has slammed the Discovery Channel’s “Eat-en Alive” show, which claims it will show a man being eaten alive by an anaconda, as a publicity stunt that will torment the snake.

Trailers of the show, which will air Dec. 7 on the cable network, show naturalist and wildlife filmmaker and author Paul Rosolie donning a custom-built snake-proof outfit.

Although PETA said the premise of the show sounds far-fetched, if the description is accurate the snake will be tormented. It added that whether it is a hoax or not, it has asked

the network to pull the show.

“Anacondas go days without eating and expend the energy needed to do so selectively. Making this snake use up energy by swallowing this fool and then possibly regurgitating him would have left the poor animal exhausted and deprived of the energy that he or she needs,” PETA said in a statement. Question

How do you feel about the situation in Ukraine? The authorities are manipulating people to make more money. I’m sure there is mafi a involved. Ukraine, Russia and the United States are all at fault. But I believe the U.S. the most, because they acted aggressively from the beginning.

Everyone says that Ukrainians and Russians have become enemies. This is just “brainwashing” served up by the press. I have good relations with Russians, I have family living there. My friends in Ukraine also talk to people in Russia. Nobody fi ghts.

Much like with any successful shopping trip, it helps to know what to look for when visiting schools — a daunting task for most high school seniors.

“You have to think, ‘Where will I be the most happy?’” says Suzanne Luse, the founder of College Expert, a college consulting group.

Keep these questions in mind when visiting college

MOLLY CONGDON

Like many high school seniors, Eileen Hurley is both excited and nervous at the thought of gradu-ation and heading off to college. To find the right schools for her, Hurley and her family are spending time visiting campuses.

Currently, Hurley’s fa-vorite is Syracuse Univer-sity; the Queensbury, New York, native says she’s drawn to the large-school atmosphere. “A big thing for me is the sporting

fi tting in?Tours, each led by a current student who is extremely competent at walking backward, will give you a good idea of the campus scene.

“This happens in most cases during the tour,” Luse says. “Is there a Greek system? Is this a rah-rah campus with sports? Is it more nerdy or preppy? Are these students you would want to spend the next four years with? That’s what the student needs to identify.”

Use caution

Avoid this mistake Whatever you do, don’t judge the entire student body by your tour guide. “You might have a tour guide who is having a bad day,” Luse says.

Tip

Don’t forget to consider the price tag “You have to think about whether your family can aff ord this college,” Luse says. “This is something parents pay more at-tention to, but students need to keep this in mind as well.”

campuses, Luse suggests:

Would you do best at a small college or a large university?“The best way to see if you match up with a school is to go to the information session,” Luse says. “That’s when you will get an idea of the class sizes, what ma-jors they have and do you fit in with the SAT score range and GPA.”

It’s also important to ask yourself what kind of learning environment works best for you. For example, are intimate classrooms more your thing, or do you prefer the impersonal quality of large lecture halls?

Do you like big cities or small campuses?“Drive around the area to get a feel for what it’s like,” Luse says. “For students coming from out of state, you have to think about how easy it will be to get there and where the airports are.” Some students love rural settings full of quiet and haystacks, while others thrive in the noise and pace of a city.

Video games. This college says gamers deserve scholarships, too High school students who are outstanding athletes or promising intellectu-als are used to fielding scholarship offers from some of the nation’s top universities. But a small college in Illinois is offering considerable scholarships to a previ-ously overlooked sector — those who obsessively play video games.

Robert Morris Univer-sity Illinois introduced the scholarship program for gamers this summer, telling reporters that it was recognizing the growing power and popu-larity of what the school calls “eSports.”

The scholarship concentrates on one game in particular: League of Legends, a multiplayer online battle game. Melcher told ESPN they were focusing on that game in particular because participants had to develop skills like team strategy to succeed. LAKSHMI GANDHI

5College application season can seem like a blur for many students, as test prep, campus visits and filling out a seemingly endless stream of forms combine to create what can be a stressful start to senior year. The new startup AdmitSee collects and analyzes applications from students who were accepted to colleges and

T hings college freshmen would do diff erently in high school

universities across the country. The site recently asked its members about what they would do differently if they had to apply to college all over again. Co-founder Stepha-nie Shyu shares their answers with us.

Find internshipsto enhance real-world experience“A lot of students are just not aware of [the opportunities] that are out there,” says Shyu. While internships are usually

associated with college and graduate students, she says there are op-portunities out there for high school students if they know where to look. AdmitSee is working to launch a resource guide for teens to help them connect to companies and positions that would be a good fit.

Start prepping for the SATs earlierWell after graduation, many students still wish they had studied more for the SATs, says Shyu. Familiarizing yourself with

the exam and the material it tests can go a long way. According to AdmitSee’s data, many students say they wish they had begun prepping during their sophomore year or earlier.

Join after-school activitiesSchool clubs and sports are great ways to both explore new interests and make new friends. “I think that some students felt that they didn’t join as many activities as they could have or that they weren’t joining the right activities for them,” says Shyu.

Avoid regret

Put more thought into application essays The college admission essay is one of the only times during the entire process where the student has the opportunity to let his or her personality shine through. Taking the time to customize an essay for each school could make a big diff er-ence. Shyu also points out that many students use their essays to bol-ster the weak points in their applications. (For example: Did your grades suff er dur-ing your junior year because you had mono or were going through some family drama? There’s no way for an admissions offi cer to know that unless you tell them.)

Visit every college you apply to

Shyu and her co-founder, Lydia Fayal, found that many students they talked to applied to col-leges without ever visit-ing the campus. While it may be cost-prohibitive to visit schools across the country before being accepted, it’s a good idea to plan trips to all of the local schools you are interested in. It’s also recommended to keep a journal about each of your visits to keep every-thing organized.

the sun rose today Andy Dick is in trouble with the law, which re-ally shouldn’t count as news, I know, but there you go. So what did the ever-volatile comic do this time? Dick allegedly stole a necklace from a man after an encounter on Hollywood Boulevard last week, according to TMZ. That encounter apparently consisted of Dick riding up to the guy on his bicycle and asking if he could see his chain, reportedly

Some celebrities are just better at taking a joke than others. Macaulay Culkin, for instance, laughed off a Facebook death hoax this weekend by tweeting a “Weekend at Bernie’s”-style photo of him from the Twitter account of his band, The Pizza Underground. Fake reports circulated over the weekend that Culkin had been found dead, but as the photos posted by the band prove, he’s very much alive. “We’re on

Here’s how to get over the ‘Too Many Cooks’ theme Looking for something to get the “Too Many Cooks” theme out of your head? (See page 26 if you don’t know what we’re talking about.) Jon Cozart, the talented fi lm student behind the

Disney parody “After Ever After,” teamed up with fellow YouTuber Peter Hollens for “Boy Brand,” a sickeningly catchy medley mocking the titans of boy band-dom. The harmonies are tight, and the jokes at the expense of the bands — particularly N*SYNC and Backstreet Boys — are genuinely funny, if a little mean.

Poor Mark Zuckerberg found ‘The Social Network’ ‘hurtful’

In not-so-surprising news, Mark Zucker-berg didn’t enjoy “The Social Network.” The topic of the David Fincher-directed, Aaron Sorkin-written film about the founding of Facebook came up during a live Facebook Q&A. “It was a very inter-esting experience to watch a movie that was supposedly about my life,” Zucker-berg says. “They went out of their way in the movie to try to get some interesting details correct, like the design of the of-fice. But on the overarching plot, in terms of why we’re building Facebook to help connect the world, or how we did it, they just kind of made up a bunch of stuff that I found kind of hurtful.” Poor guy. So what hurt the most? “They kind of made up this whole plot line about how I somehow decided to create Facebook to, I think, attract girls,” he says. That’s totally wrong! The real reason was that he was tired of playing Farmville alone.

valued at $1,000. Recog-nizing Dick as a famous person, the guy said yes, at which point Dick took it and rode away. The owner of the necklace reported the theft, and cops spotted Dick this weekend — also while tooling around on his bicycle — and nabbed him. He was released on $25,000 bail. I’m hoping his legal team goes with the “It’s Andy Dick, what did the guy expect to hap-pen?” defense.

Haters gonna hate

As Taylor Swift’s song goes, “the haters gonna hate (hate hate hate hate hate).” For some celebri-ties — like Swift — all that animosity wilts in

the face of continued success, while for others — looking at you, Renee Zellweger — it’s an ob-stacle they can’t get past. We noticed that certain famous women constant-ly find themselves on the receiving end of a wave of negativity, despite put-ting out great work, and it’s really kind of a head-scratcher. men get a pass from this kind of premeditated bashing?

Take Swift and Kath-erine Heigl, for example. They attract about the same amount of ire, but Swift keeps going plati-num while Heigl has struggled since leaving “Grey’s Anatomy” five years ago. With the mas-sive success of Swift’s “1989” last week and the premiere of Heigl’s buzzy new show, “State of Af-fairs,” next week, it’s a perfect time to take a look at some of the more divi-sive female stars of today and see how all the toxic chatter is really affecting their bottom lines.

We broke down some of the most beloved to the most taunted celebri-ties to see how they stack up in the success depart-ment. Maybe you think we got something wrong, though? Like maybe Jen-nifer Lawrence isn’t so infallible, or maybe we’re all done beating up on Anne Hathaway now. Let us know in the comments at www.metro.us.

“Big Hero 6,” Walt Disney’s animated superhero film featuring an inflatable, sometimes flying robot, clocked $56.2 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales to lead the weekend box office, topping director Christopher Nolan’s space adventure, “Interstellar.”

“Interstellar,” starring Matthew McConaughey, opened on Wednesday and recorded $50 million over the three days from Friday through Sunday, and $52.2 million over five days.

“Gone Girl,” director David Fincher’s hit starring Ben Affleck as a husband suspected of murdering his wife, was third with

$6.1 million, according to estimates from Rentrak. It has taken in more than $145 million since opening on Oct. 3.

Rounding out the top five, low-budget “Ouija,” the top film for the past two weeks, made $6 mil-lion while the Bill Murray-Melissa McCarthy com-

The Stephen Hawk-ing biopic “The Theory of Everything,” starring Ed-die Redmayne and Felicity Jones, had the fourth-best per-screen-average of the year, grossing $207,000 from just five theaters. It expands Friday. REUTERS

Michael Caine’s work in Chris-topher Nolan’s new film, “Interstellar,” gave him the chance to become friendly with theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, who in turn intro-duced Caine to Hawking — who himself only had one thing on his mind: Caine’s wife.

When Christopher Nolan explained this project to you, how did you wrap your head around it?Well, I was fascinated by it because I knew Kip Thorne’s book about black holes and all that stuff, and then I found out that Kip Thorne was the techni-cal adviser. And then he introduced me to Stephen

At what point do you just assume that you’re the voice of reason in Christopher Nolan’s head?I seem to be that all the time, don’t I? [Laughs] I’m always the one who’s sort of there represent-ing the people who stayed behind. Like in [the Batman fi lms], I was the realist, saying, “You’re going to do what? You’re going to put on a suit and go to the top of the building?” I seem to represent the people on Earth who don’t go out and actu-ally do the things. ‘Too Many Cooks’

AdultSwim.comFirst aired during the 4 a.m. slot on the Cartoon Network, the Adult Swim-birthed short “Too Many Cooks” somehow became a viral sensation, despite being powerfully and bril-liantly weird. It’s a pastiche of the feel-good opening credits of nice ’80s sitcoms like “Full House” and “My Two Dads,” with actors freezing in goofy poses as their names pop up, all against a blood-curdlingly catchy theme song. (And the one here is scarily spot-on. “Too Many Cooks” may run 11 minutes, but the song will stay in your head for a lifetime.)

But it offers more than repetition-as-a-joke (though that would have been funny too). It keeps changing, turning into

Working with Terrence Malick One of the producers of “The Better Angels” is Terrence Malick, who is also a major infl uence on the style. (Director A.J. Edwards has worked on Malick’s last three fi lms.) Clarke even has a role in the legendary fi lmmaker’s “Knight of Cups” — though, like most Malick actors, he’s not even sure if he’ll be in the fi nal cut. “I really truly have no idea what it’s going to be and how it’s going to come out in the end. Terry’s got a particular style, particu-lar motives. It’s a truly amazing little carnival to work in,” Clarke says. “He’s got a lot of method to his madness.”

Into the woods with Jason Clarke Interview. The

future “Terminator:

Genisys” star

talks playing Abe

Lincoln’s tough dad

in the fi lm “The

Better Angels.”

In “The Better Angels,” Ja-son Clarke plays Tom Lin-coln, the rugged, remote fa-ther of the 16th president, seen enduring the death of his wife Nancy (Brit Marling) and the arrival of young Abe’s stepmom, Sarah (Diane Kruger). But it’s no traditional biopic. It’s told in a series of mon-tages, with a script Clarke describes as a “blueprint.”

“As an actor it allows you to let go of some of the things you have as walking sticks to help you along,” Clarke says. “You find a great amount of freedom and a lack of pressure, which is very refreshing. There is no right or wrong.”

If the acting style was

unusual for Clarke — who’s now do-ing giant films, like this year’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” and the forthcoming “Terminator: Genisys,” in which he’ll play John Connor — the actual business of m a k i n g a film in the midst of nature was not. C l a r k e grew up on a farm in Austra-lia, and is an avid out-doorsman. This was still hard.

“We really built the cabin out there. We wore clothes that were made from cloth that was right from the time pe-

riod,” he says. Tom has been dis-

puted over the years, some historians attack-ing him as a lout, others

as a good man. “It was a different way of being

a father at that point,” Clarke explains. “The kid’s got to learn how to farm, build, cook, find heat and shelter. If the father dies, which

they did quite young back then, it’s his

job to step up and support the

family.” It can be shocking for mod-

ern viewers to watch their cold father-son relationship. “It’s [Tom’s] job to tell him to do this, that his job is to learn, he’s about to be a man. He needs to know what he’s doing, otherwise he might die out there.”

Make this the most wonderful time of the year by taking these steps to avoid depression.

Happy holiday how-to

Flipping the calendar to November kicks off the anticipation, joy and fun of the two-month holiday season. But those same occasions can leave some people feeling less than jolly, whether it’s because of the looming winter, the prospect of uncomfortable gather-ings or not feeling like there is much to cel-ebrate. We got some tips from wellness counselor Anne Parker, of Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa, on how to avoid holiday depression.

Keep up your exercise routine

With gift-buying, decorating and planning trips, it can be tempt-ing to move your usual workout routine to last place on your to-do list. However, this is the time when it is most impor-tant to make sure you are exercising regularly. “Exercise will keep your energy level up, release tension and support a positive mood,” Parker advises. “Exercise is the No. 1 way to keep melancholy at bay!”

Be careful of expectations

Expectations about how things “should be” are dangerous, particularly at holiday time when activities and events feel even more signifi cant. “Remember to focus on the things that you can actually impact and let go of the expectations about things you can’t control,” Parker says.

Raise a toast, but keep it to just one glass. / THINKSTOCK 1 Dial back the drinking Even though alcohol can have the eff ect of loosening us up, it is actually a depressant,

Parker reminds us. “Alco-hol consumption has a rebound eff ect on mood that is similar to sugar and can increase your melancholy and feelings of negativity.”

56 Don’t fi ght the sadness As the year is coming to an end, sadness and grief can become ampli-fi ed. “This is normal, and you need to be gentle with yourself about this,” Parker says. “Fighting the feelings or judging yourself for having these feelings just gives them more strength.” Writing is a great way to acknowledge what you are feeling and move the energy in a positive way.

Enjoy the moment Allow yourself to be fully present and engaged with holiday happenings. Focus on what is going on and fully enjoying what you have instead of dwelling on how you wish things could be. “If you are truly pres-ent, you give yourself the opportunity to discover, play, connect and enjoy!”

Get enough sleep

This basic self-care habit is absolutely critical to warding off depression — it is also an easy thing to cut back on when the holidays are in full gear. Make sure you’re giving yourself adequate time (and a proper bed!) for nourishing sleep.

Don’t skimp on sleep. / MOODBOARD

98 Set priorities Or, in other words, don’t sweat the small stuff ! “Focus your attention and energy on what is most meaningful and congruent with the holiday experience you want to create for your-self and others,” Parker says. “Putting pressure on yourself to have all the details and minutiae perfect is a quick way to plunge yourself into frustration, anxiety and a negative mood.”

Stay connected All the obligations and endless to-do lists of the holidays can be over-whelming and lead you to lose touch with what supports you the most. “Be careful not to isolate yourself or withdraw from life — people, ac-tivities, animals, nature, God, spirit,” Parker says. “That disconnect creates the opportunity for sadness, regret and disappointment to take over.”

Start new traditions or transform old ones

If old traditions are no longer meaningful or just don’t fi t current circumstances, they can become a source of stress and confl ict. Transform them to honor what is mean-ingful while creating something that fi ts what is important to you now.

Being a ‘rookie’ on the job may be key to success

The first few months of a new job are often filled with stress as the new-comer navigates his or her way through a sea of new faces, new rules and new challenges. But a new book argues that being the new kid on the block in a new company or field can also lead to increased creativity and some of the best mo-ments of your career.

“When we’re in this rookie mode is when we tend to do our very best work,” says Liz Wiseman, the author of the book “Rookie Smarts: Why Learning Beats Know-ing in the New Game of Work.” “There’s brilliance

Career track. A former tech

executive says new

employees are the

key to innovation.

New to the job? Now is the time to be creative. / FUSE

in it. A rookie move isn’t a mistake or a disaster but is actually something that is innovative.”

Here are some things real-life rookies should keep in mind as they navi-gate the workplace.

1There is no honey-moon period. “Rather than be

nervous, [real-ize] that this is where you are going to do your best work,” says Wiseman. “Instead of see-ing those first six months as a write off and kind of being

in learning mode and not being expected to contrib-ute, actually the first six months is when people are valuable.”

2Ask smart ques-tions. “Start reaching out to people who

know [the lay of the land],” says Wiseman. “And that humble request for help

is likely to kick in somebody’s mentoring genes.”

3Don’t be arrogant.No one has

made friends by bluntly criticiz-ing the way

things are done. “I think approaching anything by saying ‘I have a better way’ is not going to go over well,” Wiseman notes. “I think the best approach, the humbler approach, is to think ‘what can I learn from you, what can you teach me’ and then just deliver fast and I think just show them.”

4Build a record of success. “If you could show a trend of [suc-

cess], hiring managers will see that what you have is learning agility,” she notes.

LAKSHMI [email protected]@metro.us

The time is now

Age is just a number “It’s never too late to be a rookie,” stresses Wiseman. “Profession-als who are able to use their hard-won experi-ence but are still able to tap into their rookie smarts will build a cul-ture of innovation.”

Election message anything but clearRe: ‘Obama needs to fi x his policy’ (Metro, Nov. 7) When letter writer George Christian says Obama’s policies were on the ballot this election, he is right, but not how he thinks. After all, several (red) states passed increases in minimum wage, another state passed expanded background checks for gun purchases and Massa-chusetts opted to require paid sick time for workers. Most of these same states voted in Republican lawmakers who oppose (or fl ip-fl opped on) these measures. In that light, the message of this past elec-tion is hardly clear. CHARLES HALL, VIA EMAIL

What is the GOP angry about?Re: ‘Obama needs to fi x his policy’ (Metro, Nov. 7) So George Christian argues the election was a “stunning” defeat of “Obama’s agenda”? What is that agenda? All I see is a guy who is trying to improve the quality of life of Americans. Stocks are up, gas is down, property values have rebounded, health care means more than it did and we are not in any major wars. What exactly is the percentage who voted Republican actually upset about? BRIAN BECK, VIA EMAIL

Cuban: OKC

should tank

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is no stranger to saying

controversial things. He dropped his

latest on Sunday. Cuban suggested the Thunder should tank the season with stars

Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook

both out an extended period of time,

referring to when the Spurs fi nished near the bottom in 1997 when David

Robinson was hurt and they won the lottery and picked Tim Duncan. “The

question I don’t think anybody has asked is: Why don’t they pull a David Robin-son and try to get Tim Duncan?” said

Cuban. The Thunder has started 2-5.

Jaiquawn Jarrett couldn’t remember after Sunday’s 20-13 win the exact num-ber of starts he’s had with New York — even if he can count them on one hand.

But it was the unher-alded Jarrett, a former second-round pick of the Eagles in 2011, who keyed a feisty Jets defense to the win.

He had seven tackles, one sack, a fumble recov-ery and interceptions in the first and third quarter after finding out Friday he would be making the start for rookie first-round pick Calvin Pryor.

“When the tables are rolling for you, you just got to continue to capitalize,” Jarrett said. “The ball fell in our favor and we were able to get the offense the ball and they were able to go down there and get some points for us.”

Pryor is still far more comfortable playing the run. In a game against a quarterback like Ben Roethlisberger, the Jets feared Pryor could get burned.

And so Jarrett got his first start of the season against a quarterback who had an NFL-record 12 touchdowns the last two weeks.

“I think as a unit, as a team, we came together. We dialed in, we stayed focused on doing just our job,” Jarrett said. “We were able to go out there and execute and get the job done.”

New face, new place

Seahawks run over Giants on way to victory

The Giants hung tight with the defending champions long enough to make it look like they could pull off a huge upset. In the end, it was just a tease.

The Seahawks (6-3) pounded the Giants (3-6) in the second half — and fourth quarter specifi cally — as they sent New York to its fourth consecutive loss, 38-17.

We look at three things that went wrong as the Giants are perilously close to making the last month

of the season completely meaningless for the playoff picture.

1BeastingThe Giants simply had

no answer for Marshawn Lynch, specifi cally in the second half. The running back known as “Beast Mode” pounded the Giants for 140 yards and four touchdowns as part of a day in which Seattle rushed for 350 yards. New York hasn’t given up that many rushing yards since 1978. Buff alo’s Terry Miller ran for over 200 yards in that game in a season in which the Giants fi nished 6-10. It looks like they’re

headed to a similar end-of-season record in 2014.

2Gotta have heartThe talk all week from

the Giants was about

eff ort and heart. And yet, on Sunday, it looked like only Odell Beckham Jr. — a rookie — showed much of any fi ght. The defense and off ense both took a rain

check on the second half. Even Eli Manning’s late fumble was an odd non-contact dropped ball. Now we’ll fi nd out if the team really has any heart.

3Broken recordIt’s become like a bro-

ken record, but the Giants can’t run the ball and they can’t win if they can’t run the ball. Hopefully Rashad Jennings will be back next week, because Andre Williams — despite a nice touchdown Sunday — is not cutting it. Maybe get-ting Beckham involved in the running game, as they did once against Seattle, is an option. MARK OSBORNE

What went right

1Containing Big BenIt was assumed Steelers

quarterback Ben Roethlis-berger would have a huge game against the Jets. Instead, Roethlisberger fi nished with a rather poor 30-of-43 for 343 yards with two interceptions. But that includes an 80-yard garbage time touchdown. Roethlis-berger came into this game with just three interceptions on the season.

2All about turnoversThe Jets didn’t have a

single turnover in the game for a second straight week — a huge accomplishment for a team that was hemor-rhaging the ball under Geno Smith.

3Set the toneThe Jets came out early

and dominated the ball in the fi rst quarter. They al-lowed just fi ve total yards.

New face, place

Vick solidifi es his hold on starting spot

Michael Vick has proven to be everything that his previous 12 years in the league would indicate.

While his two touch-down passes, including a 67-yard connection with T.J. Graham in the fi rst quarter, were im-portant for spurring the Jets’ win, it was equally important that he didn’t turn the ball over.

“In my heart, I feel like on any team I can be the starter. As long as it is not Aaron Rodg-ers or Ben Roethlisberg-er,” Vick said. “I am not saying those guys are better quarterbacks, I am just saying that I am confi dent in my abili-ties. If there is an oppor-tunity there, yeah. But I do feel like at times, the opportunities were there but the coaches made the decisions not do it. And I solely understood everything that was taking place. It was all about develop-ing a young quarter-back, mentoring a young quarterback and giving him every op-portunity to succeed.” KRISTIAN DYER

Russell Wilson had the Giants defense running in circles tothe tune of 107 rushing yards. / GETTY IMAGES
