A father at Daytona Beach in Florida, US, was horrified when he walked in on a man who was molesting his 11-year-old son.The 18-year-old was allegedly caught in the act by the boy’s father, whose name has not been released in order to protect the victim’s identity. After walking on it, the dad beat the teen to a pulp.Sources said Raymond Frolander was arrested and charged with sexual battery on a person less than 12 years old, but not before his face was completely battered by the victim’s father.

The boy’s told the 911 dispatcher:“I did whatever I got a right to do except I didn’t kill him.”He also claims the weapons he chose for his attack were “my foot and my fist” and remarked that the 18-year-old was a “damn lucky boy that I love my God.”When police asked where the man was once they arrived on the scene, he told them:“He is nice and knocked out on the floor for you. I dragged him into the liv-ing room.” When asked if he was still unconscious, he responded: “Yes… I hit hard, sir.”

All foreign investors will henceforth be required to prove they can create opportunities for the youth to win State contracts. The new requirement has been implemented as part of the Govern-ment’s efforts to prove its serious-ness in creating jobs for the youth.Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru on Monday said those eying Government con-tracts, including foreign investors, must demonstrate the number of

jobs they will create for the youth before being allowed to begin oper-ations in the country. She said the measures are expected to deal with the rising cases of youth unemployment. The new requirements are outlined in the National Employment Policy which is awaiting approval by Par-liament for implementation.“Once approved, all major invest-ments and projects will be subjected to a systematic analysis to determine their employment creation potential

before they are accepted,” Waiguru said while opening the International Conference on the Great Lakes Re-gion (ICGLR) at KICC in Nairobi.Creation of job opportunities was one of the major promises the Jubilee administration made to the youth during its campaigns. She said the youth population in Kenya has risen to 16 million, up from 3.3 million in 1969. The unemployment rate stands at 12.7 per cent.Youth aged between 15 and 35 years

of age account for more than 30 per cent of Kenya’s 44 million people.“The statistics show that Kenya is experiencing a youth bulge. That is a labour force that is predominantly youthful,” she said.Idleness among most the youth has been blamed for the rise in criminal activities, including radicalization. Waiguru urged MPs to quickly ap-prove the policy and ensure creation of jobs for young people. She also directed State departments to conduct a similar analysis to

determine the number of jobs that can be created for the youth. The Government has set aside up to 30 per cent worth of State tenders for the youth, women and the dis-abled to ensure the group is not left out in development programmes.“Youth employment is key for devel-opment,” the minister said. The ICGLR Executive Secretary, Prof Ntumba Luamba, urged the youth to work harder. The three-day conference is attended by partici-pants from 12 member states.

Gun men killed four people last night and injured 11 others in an attack at Soweto in Likoni, Mombasa County. Police say the attackers escaped on foot after the 9 pm incident.Officials said among the killed is an 11-year-old boy who was walking home at the time of the attack.

The injured are admitted at local hospitals in stable condition.Witnesses said the attackers were armed with rifles and opened fire in the residential area before escaping. The motive of the attack has not been established but tension remains high.Mombasa County Commander

Robert Kitur said they are investigating the incident. The larger coastal region has witnessed a wave of violence in recent months, with 100 residents reported dead in gun attacks. The violence has largely been attributed to Somali Al-Shabaab militants. However, residents local

political gangs are responsible for the raids. Witnesses said the gunmen rampaged through the streets as they shot passers-by.A resident said he saw two masked men armed with a rifle and a pistol carry out the shooting.“I saw two men dressed in black with a red ribbon around their

heads. They were just shooting randomly at anyone,” said the witness. The attack comes barely a day after Inspector General David Kimaiyo imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Lamu County in a move aimed at allowing police time to comb the area.

The war against cancer has received a big boost after scientists identified a gene that can stop the disease’s movement from lungs to other parts of the body.In what will provide a new way to fight the world’s deadliest cancers, scientists at the Salk Institute in the US announced that they have detected the gene that can also help in treating cervical cancer. The spread often happens quickly in lung can-cer and results in a bleak survival rate. But the scientists say they are able to explain the metastasis after identifying why some tumours are more prone to spreading than others. The newly discovered pathway was detailed yesterday in the journal Molecular Cell.“Lung cancer, even when it’s discovered early, is often able to metastasize almost immedi-ately and take hold throughout the body,” says Reuben J. Shaw, Salk professor of molecular and cell biology “The reason why some tumors do that and others don’t has not been very well understood. Now, through this work, we are beginning to understand why some subsets of lung cancer are so invasive.”Lung cancer, which also affects nonsmokers, remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths throughout the world and its survival rate is also dismal.Up to 80 per cent of patients are said to die within five years of diagnosis. This is largely due to the disease’s aggressive tendency to spread throughout the body.To become mobile, cancer cells override cellular machinery that typically keeps cells rooted within their respective locations.

The Government will upgrade slums in 15 major towns at a cost of Sh14 billion from the World Bank.County Assemblies where the pro-gram will be undertaken have already endorsed the project expected to be rolled out by end of this month.Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Kilifi, Kericho, Kitui and Machakos counties will be among the beneficiaries of the project. “We have been looking

towards getting the project rolled out since 2004. Ten years down the line and our slums have remained exclud-ed. We must use devolution to correct these injustices,” said Kaloleni-Shauri-moyo MCA Prisca Auma Misachi. She called on MCAs to come up with teams to work out, among other issues, ways to reduce resistance by residents. Civil society organisations are also working to rally people for

success of the project.Dr Steven Akoth of Pamoja Trust, which is one of the organisations collecting views from residents on key demands, said lack of proper struc-tures and institutions needs attention. He said lack of a clear formula from the Commission on Revenue Allo-cation (CRA) on how funds should be shared was the reason for the slow transformation of slums.

Elephants can tell if a human poses a threat by listening to his voice and detecting subtle clues about person’s age, gender and ethnicity, a study released on Monday says.Researchers from the University of Sussex and the Amboseli Trust for Elephants have discovered that aside from an elephant’s legendary memory, the animals also have the ability to distinguish the different speech patterns of human beings. Karen McComb and Graeme Shannon from the University of Sussex, and Katito Sayialel and Cynthia Moss from the

Amboseli Trust, played re-cordings of human voices to wild elephants in Kenya and watched how they reacted.“Our results demonstrate that elephants can reliably discriminate between dif-ferent groups of people that differ in the level of threat they represent,” the authors said in an article published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study said an elephant herd was more likely to bunch up in a defensive po-sition following playbacks of voices of native Maasai people, who, had hunted elephants for centuries.

Police are looking for a suspected thug who shot and wounded a reveler during an argument at a drinking den in Mukuru slums, Nairobi. The suspect escaped leaving his AK47 rifle with eight bullets after other revelers overpowered him in the incident which hap-pened last night. Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue said the two had an argument before the gunman rushed to his nearby house, returned with firearm and shot the victim once in the stomach. The victim is admitted in hospital in a stable condition.

A Kenyan has reportedly died in the US after sus-taining gun-shot wounds in California.Randy Kamau Kimani, 22, had been rushed to Riverside County Regional Medical Center in critical condition where he died of his wounds. He was shot last Tuesday and police did not disclose details of the shooting. It is said the victim had been arrested and charged with three counts of driv-ing under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license and petty theft just a month ago.

The Central Organisa-tion of Trade Unions (Cotu) has opposed a new employment policy which will see cabinet secretaries and principal secretaries have more powers in the hiring and dismissal of public servants. Cotu crit-icized the policy saying it goes against international labour requirements. The new system will allow cabinet secretaries to ap-point and dismiss workers in their ministries as they deem fit. But Cotu says the government could be resorting to unfair labour practices that are meant to silence workers.

The Kenya Defence Forces has urging the public to ignore postings on its official Twitter, saying the account has been hacked. Also hacked is the official Twitter account of KDF Spokesman Major Emmanu-el Chirchir. The hacker is said to have used the account to send abusive information on Sunday night and early this morning. Major Chirchir has urged the public to ignore any postings on the timelines of the two accounts because they are being made by imposters. He said the hackers also defaced a website of an agency of the Ministry of Environment. It is believed KDF’s involve-ment in the war against Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia may influence the imposters to send mis-leading information, Maj Chirchir said.KDF forces made incur-sions into Somalia in 2011 following a spate of attacks and kidnappings attributed to Al-Shabaab militants. The soldiers have since been in Somalia as they seek to pacify the war-torn nation that has not had a stable government since 1991.KDF which operates under the African Union (Amisom) forces used their Twitter account to update the public on the goings-on in Somalia.

Pedestrians should use foot-bridges and avoid crossing busy highways to reduce the rising road carnage.Director General of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Francis Meja, who spoke at the weekend, said 692 of the 1, 484 road deaths record-ed since January this year involve passengers. Majority of the victims have been hit while crossing busy high-ways in Nairobi.Pedestrians and users of intermediate modes of trans-port, he said, contributed to 1,030 deaths. This represents 69.4 per cent of all road deaths.“This number could signifi-cantly drop if people start using footbridges (flyovers as they are popularly known) as a habit and a matter of course. It is quite disheart-ening that Kenyans will only use footbridges when coerced by police officers,” he said.He said many other have lost limbs in accidents after shunning footbridges. In Nairobi alone, there are 33 footbridges majority of which are unused.A survey by Usalama initia-tive, an NGO promoting safe use of roads in Nairobi, has discovered that many Nai-

The dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on Lamu County has left local Muslims in a dilemma as the directive is likely to affect their Ramadhan routines.Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo on Saturday announced that area residents will be required to be in their houses between 6pm and 6am until August 20, 2014 as security officers prepare to mount a heavy operation to flush out militants.“Every person residing within Lamu County is directed to remain indoors during the period the curfew order is in force except under and in accordance with the terms and condition of a written permit granted by the police county commander,” the order stated. Gaza death toll hits 500 as refugees flock city

Hope as scientists close in on safer IVF treatmentThere is hope of safer invitrofertilization (IVF) after UK doctors successfully used a new method to stimulate ovulation in women.Twelve babies were born using the potentially safer way of getting eggs for use in IVF after their mothers were given an injection of the natural hormone kisspeptin to make their eggs mature. The results show that the naturally occurring hormone can be used successfully.Fertility researchers are now hoping that kisspeptin, which does not remain in the blood for a long time after an injection because it is broken down more quickly, will prevent ovarian hypertension by reducing the risk of overstimulation.Doctors normally administer another hormone, hCG, for this purpose, but in some women, there is a risk that this can overstimulate the ovaries, with potentially life-threatening consequences.Scientists at Imperial College London where one in every six couples experiences infertility with IVF their preferred option out, tested the new method in 53 healthy volunteers at Hammersmith Hospital in London. The study, funded by the Medical Research Council and the UK’s National Institute for Health Researchers was published yesterday in the Journal of Clinical Investigations. It found that ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) affects around a third of IVF patients in a mild form, causing symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.

The death toll in Gaza has climbed more than 500 following Sunday’s Israeli assault on the town of Shaja’ia near Gaza City even as the UN called for a halt to the spate of killings.Hundreds of panic-stricken people are fleeing into Gaza City with scores of Palestinians reportedly killed during heavy shelling of Shaja’ia. The assault brought the total number killed since the start of Israel’s military operations against Hamas to 501, according to the

Gaza Health Ministry. More than 3,000 have been wounded.Extensive fighting continued in Shaja’ia into Monday morning, the Israeli military said. The military also denied Hamas’ claim of capturing Israeli soldier during the deadliest day yet of fighting in Gaza.Hamas’ military wing said Sunday it had taken the soldier during an early morning operation.Abu Obeida, a spokesman for Hamas’

military wing, provided the captured soldier’s name and ID, saying, “He is a prisoner, and if Zionists lie about the dead and wounded, then the fate of this soldier is their responsibility.”Gunfire and cheers erupted in Gaza on Sunday in apparent celebration of the alleged capture of the soldier as it stirred memories of militants’ abduction of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in 2006 whom they released some five years later in exchange for

more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri, speaking to Al-Jazeera, said that Israel committed “a crime against humanity,” and that most of those killed in Shaja’ia were women and children. The Israeli military said it had warned residents days in advance to leave Shaja’ia, which it described as a key area that Hamas uses to launch rockets into Israel. It accused Hamas of ordering people to stay in the area.

Till death do us part?Nine-year-old Saneie Masilela has become the world’s youngest groom for the second time after remarrying the 62-year-old woman he tied the knot with last year.Dressed in a silvery tuxedo, baby-faced Saneie clutched the hand of mother-of-five Helen Shabangu - her children are aged between 28- and 38-years-old - as they repeated their vows a year on in front of 100 guests. The schoolboy says he did it to make the marriage ‘official’ but other villagers in Ximhungwe in Mpumalanga, South Africa describe it as “sickening”. The ceremony - where guests shared a piece of cake - took place in front of Helen’s long-term husband Alfred Shabangu, 66, who was there last year as well. He said: “My kids and I are happy because we don’t have a problem with her marrying the boy - and I don’t care what other people say.” Both families claim the wedding is simply another ‘ritual’ after Saneie was told by his dead ancestors to wed last year and his parents forked out Sh 75,00 for the bride and another Shs 150,000 for the ceremony. The young groom said he still hoped he would have a proper wedding to a woman his own age when he was older. He added: “I told my mother that I wanted to get married because I really did want to. “I’m happy that I married Helen – but I will go to school and study hard. “When I’m older I will marry a lady my own age. I chose Helen because I love her and, although we don’t live together all the time, we meet at the dumping site where my mother works regularly.”

The European Commission has condemned technology giant, Apple, for failing to offer immediate plans to protect users from being misled by free apps.Apps are usually free to download from mobile stores but users are often “tempted” to pay for in-game enhancements that will see them progress to the next level.Apple and also Google are being forced by the commission to ensure the cost of the games, including what is needed for in-game enhancements be revealed.“Apple has proposed to ad-dress those concerns. How-ever, no firm commitment and no timing have been provided for the imple-mentation of such possible future changes,” said the commission in a statement. Lack of a commitment is

the reason as to why Apple has been singled out.Google is said to have decided to make changes starting September. The Consumer Protection

Cooperation (CPC) in UK will continue talks with Apple to ensure it provides details of changes required and put its practices in line with the official require-

ments. They said authorities opted out of legal action against the firm to give them chance to strengthen their protections.

MultiChoice has launched a service that allows DStv subscribers to rent latest blockbuster movies to watch on decoders. Using what is known as the BoxOffice service, subscribers can rent and keep movies for up to 48 hours for a fee of Sh230 per film. The first movie is provided free courtesy of DStv Kenya. Box Office gives subscribers access to a variety of films, including comedies, drama, horror or fantasy. “With this innovative service, subscribers can watch the latest blockbusters before they become available on TV,” said MultiChoice Kenya’s Finance Manager Janet Oyugi.

The pay TV company has said that it is targeting customers who want to watch new releases from Hollywood and Nollywood before they become available on regular TV channels. To access the service, one must be a DStv Premium service subscriber with the Explora digital HD decoder. This is the first time a local pay TV service provider is offering on-demand rental for movies.Under the BoxOffice service, subscribers will be able to select a movie of their choice and download it to their decoder. They will be allowed to retain it for a maximum of 48 hours before it is automatically deleted.

Oyugi says that the service is an “innovation to help people enjoy some of the best entertainment available at a time that’s convenient to them.’’MultiChoice is mirroring a concept that has been in use in the United States for a few years now. Through a service known as Netflix, pay TV subscribers in the US can access their favourite programmes for a monthly fee. Netflix is famous for giving viewers access to some of the world’s most acclaimed programmes, including Breaking Bad, Luther, Scandal, House and Fraiser.

They include soaps, cleaning products, food, beverages and tobacco, among others. For middle to upper class Kenyans who spend as much as Sh10,000 a month on family shopping, Sh3,000 goes to the items. Nielsen researchers say beverages and personal care categories are bought by nearly all consumers.

Trendy consumers and those with cash to spare buy the perishable goods based on preferences. As well as buying conventional items such as juice and petroleum jelly, they also purchase seemingly unnecessary goods like energy drinks and deodorants.

The research shows that trendy consumers are likely to spend three times as much on favoutite product and avoid cheaper, less popular brands. Those buying deodorant, for instance, spend Sh300 for a product if a similar item that costs Sh100 does not impress them.

“Consumers shop across traditional channels like dukas, kiosks and modern channels such as supermarkets and grocery stores,” say Nielsen experts. “Similar to other African countries studied, affordability remains a key driver for Kenyans.” The study notes that companies can use smaller pack sizes to make products more affordable for their consumers.

Kenyans are more loyal to favourite brands than any other country in Africa. A recent study by research group, Nielsen, reveals that fierce devotion makes it difficult for manufacturers to get consumers buy new items that were not in the market before.Consumer packaged goods (CPG) categories account for the largest portion (30 per cent) of monthly household spending in Kenya. A CPG is a type of product that is consumed every day by average customers.

forced banks to make mobile banking a standard feature of their services and by upgrading their systems with the help of mobile money operators to allow their customers to move cash from one platform to another. The service has gained popularity among more than a million Kenyans as it allows access to cash held by banks even at odd hours while saving clients the inconvenience of queuing in banking halls. Utility service providers such as pay TV provid-ers, electricity and water agencies also have mobile banking facilities to deliv-er faster services.

BIDCO, one of the coun-try’s leading consumer goods manufacturers, is set to expand its detergent and processed foods busi-ness and create more than 3,000 new jobs. The company CEO, Vimal Shah, said the proposed Sh3.2 billion expansion will employ new staff on the production chain.“We want to expand our current business,” Vimal said after the signing of the loan deal at a Nairobi hotel.

Selling leaves in Laikipia cuts down charcoal burningFarmers in Laikipia are sell-ing leaves for Sh100 a kilo, saving trees and making a profit at the same time.Laikipia District is notorious for illegal logging and felling of trees to burn charcoal. However, a company working to promote products made from local plants has cut down logging by half and more than doubled the income of tree farmers in Laikipia by buying leaves,

twigs and roots which were traditionally sold as charcoal. The Desert Edge Bio-trading Company, concerned with the rate at which deforestation has been happening in the semi-arid district, has stepped up its conservation methods by approaching farmers to tend to the trees. “It was hard to get out of the charcoal business,” says Joseph Muthati, a member of Tigithi Aloe Group, a small

organisation that helps farm-ers expand their businesses. But with the guaranteed market from Desert Edge, Muthati and his group have a source of steady income. Instead of felling the trees for charcoal, the farmers harvest the tree branches and twigs which they then sell to Desert Edge. Other buyers include pharmaceuticals and hoteliers who use them as raw ingredi-ents. Since the beginning of

the project, previously extinct tree species like Prunus, Ol-ive Africana and Croton have been re-introduced in the area with impressive results.“But the catch here is that you have to pay the farmers more for the parts of the leaves they deliver than what they get for selling charcoal or firewood to traders,” says Lucas Mbithi from Desert Edge. Farmers delivering leaves get paid in kilos and

they can deliver as much as possible throughout the year. This means that the farmers put a lot of effort into tending and conserving the trees to ensure optimal growth. A kilo of leaves pick Sh100 with a well pruned tree producing 30 kilos of leaves. Muthati’s group, which has 300 members, campaigns against logging and has planted more than 10,000 tree seedlings.

Mumias Sugar was last week’s loser as it continued on a persistent downward trend that the company has been unable to reverse since early in the year. Having seen its shares shed 6.4 per cent in the past week (-20.0 per cent for the year to date,) the stock is trading at an all time low of around Sh2.60 after having reached Sh4.00 in March. The company has been facing a barrage of

operational and financial difficulties in previous months that have included disputes over sugarcane deliveries with contractors and the emergence of deeply entrenched illegal sugar importation networks within the company and recently announced retrenchment initiatives in a bid to turn around the company’s poor performance.

winning stock as shares in Ugandas energy generation and

distribution company rallied 20.8 per cent over the final days of the week with its stock prices trading at Sh15.70 a share. However, the total number of shares traded remained low, indicating a

general renewed interest in the counter. The firm recently saw its majority share-holder, UK based private equity firm Actis, sell a major portion of its shares to local and regional retail investors in a move that should see an increase in the volume of shares traded in coming months on region-al exchanges.

Viber is social site that allows the sending of free messages, making free calls to other Viber users on any device and network in any country. But all the “free” policy comes with a seriously compromised security system. Researchers

at the New Haven Cyber Forensics R&E Education Group have demonstrated the shocking security breaches. They have proved that the application sends images and videos in the open. It stores the images publicly online

without giving encryption protection for images from users. This means anyone can force entry into the links and openly view data, download it or use it in any manner they desire.Users are prone to cyber-attacks from hackers who

can create wireless access points to locate data. Not only will they view people’s messages but will hack into the system for more personal user information. But Viber claims the mishap has been fixed and users no longer need not to worry.

Thorn Tree café at the Saro-va Stanely, Nairobi, is one of the most famous restaurants in the country.Located along Kimathi Street, it is legendary for its open-air, bistro style pave-ment and is famed for its ‘tree mail’- a message board on an acacia tree from which the restaurant gets its name. The message board was for passing travellers to post messages and has since been replaced by a smaller one.Business executives love the Thorn Tree but it is also

popular with tourists or anyone who wants to have a lunch splurge in a com-fortable place away from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi’s Central Business District. And although it has been re-furbished, it still main-tains its old charm and historic features. It is a popular destination for a big breakfast, dinner, and evening cocktails. It has a deli counter and serves a wide range of beer, wine and coffee. It serves popular conti-

nental dishes including roast duck, the pan-seared salmon, toasted sesame seeds, and crepes. They also serve original Italian pizzas, which are baked to order in a wood-fired oven, fresh juices among other foods.Evening cocktails are often accompanied by live themed music such as Jazz, Rock, Reggae, African fusion, and soul music .The live perfor-mance starts at 6.30pm on weekdays. One can call the restaurant to make reservations and takeaway services.

the Amazon store. The Kindle Fire’s lighting system, unlike that of Apple’s iPad, is designed for reading and can be adjusted to suit a user’s preference. X News’ Neema Wamai, who has used the Kindle Fire and an iPad for reading says: ‘’When I use the iPad to read before going to

bed I find that I lose sleep quickly, but the brightness of the Kindle does not have an effect on my sleeping patterns’’Kindle Fire devices employ a 1-GHz Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 dual-core processor. The device has a multi-touch colour screen with a 600×1024-pixel resolution. Connectivity is through Wi-Fi and USB 2.0. The device includes 8 GB of internal storage, which Amazon say is enough to support 80 applications, 10 movies, 800 songs or 6,000 books. A major let down with the Kindle Fire is its USB driver implementation- the Kindle Fire suffers from slow USB transfer speeds. For example, transferring an 800MB video file may take more than three minutes. This is in contrast with other tablets like the Apple iPad and also the Samsung Galaxy which take between 30 seconds and 2 minutes.

After a survey by X News, these were some of the responses from those married to high school sweethearts.“It worked out because my father was a staunch traditionalist, so it was like it was arranged. But it was not arranged…we had been friends since high school in 1990 in Form 4. The fact that

our families were close helped us get through to where we are now; happily married for 15 years,” Jane Achieng says.“We met during a school outing at the national drama festival in 1996 and something just clicked. During the days, we didn’t have phones so letters kept us going from Form Two to

around third term Form 4. After high school, we kept quiet since we could only communicate through the parents’ phones. One day, mom told me somebody wanted to talk to me and there he was! Since then we kept contact and one thing led to another and we got married. Here we are 9 years

down the line,” says Mary Wangare, a businesswoman.“We have been together since high school, married with three children, James, Njenga and Ruben. We were sweethearts in high school and two years after school, we met and you may call it a mistake. I got pregnant not knowing what to do.

All relationships, whether serious or flings, come with rules, benefits and troubles too. Commitment carries with it a mass of obligations. It is a promise to stay true to each other since it is more than sexual attraction. One has to make heavy sacrifices and compromises to keep the love ablaze.People work hard to please and avoid hurting those they love. Martin Munyua believes if one is committed, they must be ready to change. “You cannot afford to fool around and do the same things you used to do,” he says. Partners must consider each other’s feelings or opinions before making

important decisions. No one has the luxury to flirt or play around, though it happens anyway. Those who can’t handle the pressure of a serious relationship may prefer casual flings where they do not answer to anyone. Instead, they swim in immense freedom of having as many sexual partners as they desire.Friends with benefits, as called today, are not demanding. Those involved know there is no room for emotional attachment but carnal satisfaction alone. The thrill of being free is less stressful and even gives one chance

Kenya drown Uganda to defend Elgon crownThe Kenya team displayed refined class to defend the annual Elgon Cup at RFUEA grounds in Nairobi over the weekend.Led by Dominique Habimana, Kenya needed to overrun Uganda to retain the title after losing the first leg in Kampala.Kenya A convincingly bounced back from a 14-21 loss to Uganda Cranes in the first leg to win 34-0 and retain the trophy on a 48-21 aggregate. The target at the beginning of the class was seven unanswered points. It took only five minutes for the hosts to score. Fly half Isaac Adimo’s penalty attempt bounced off the posts before Kenya regained possession to set up a quick ruck that culminated in Kelvin Omiyo grounding the ball. Three minutes later, Uganda’s sustained forward play paid off with a penalty but Ivan Makmot missed the attempt. In the 12th minute, Makmot squandered another penalty as the Uganda Cranes dictated pace.It was a see-saw affair at the rucks and lineouts but Kenya’s perfection and confidence grew as the clock ticked. The hosts had a big setback after 30 minutes when Justin Kimono, their speedy winger, sustained an injury.Nato Simiyu scored a try four minutes later before Adimo’s conversion stretched the lead to 12-0 going to the breather.Winger Godfrey Mbeya quickly capitalised on Cranes’ blunder and sprint to touch down for a 17-0 lead. Two minutes later, Eden Agero burst through on the right wing, evading leaving three Ugandan players to score a try which Adimo converted. Substitutes Jacob Ojee and Victor Brown scored a try each

in the last 10 minutes of play.Domonique Habimana said his technical bench plans to bounce back for victory. “We wanted to control more of the game and turn pressure into points. That worked perfectly well,” he said.

“We wanted to break them down in the first 40 minutes since we knew it would have been difficult to recover,” said Habimana. “The good interchanges between Agero, Adimo and Simiyu raised the game’s tempo and the substitutes

killed it off for us.” In the ladies category, Kenya Lionesses continued from where they left by beating Lady Cranes 39-10 for a 72-25 aggregate.

Nico Rosberg won the German Grand Prix with a well-executed pole to flag finish. But in an action packed grand prix, it was Lewis Hamilton’s charge from 20th on the grid to third place that had fans on the edge of their seats. It is Rosberg’s fourth win of the season and puts him 14 points clear of Hamilton and in doing so he also passed the total of career laps led by his father, Keke. Denied a fight with the British

driver he did exactly what he needed to do and drove a flawless run to the chequered flag but not one that necessarily caught the eye.“We’ll be celebrating a little tonight,” Rosberg said.” I am thankful to Mercedes for the car they have built us and now I am looking forward to Hungary.”After his accident in qualifying, Hamilton had cautioned that his race would have to be focused on “damage

limitation again – which I seem to be doing quite often”. Taking 15 points here would almost certainly be as much as he might have expected but it often came within a whisker of going from merely a bad weekend to a disastrous one.“I had great fun, thank you so much for the support,” he said. “It was hard to get through the pack safely and it was hard to overtake at the end but I am glad to get some points today.”

Kenya Golf Union chairman Francis Okwara has spelled tough rules ahead of the 2014-2015 Barclays Golf Circuit series. The event is set to tee off on August 16 at the Nakuru Country Club. Only golfers with a valid Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU) handicaps and junior golfers who are in the 13 to 18-year range will be allowed to take part in the series.Okwara said more than 2800 amateur golfers are expected to participate in the seven-month nationwide circuit in which 20 winners will secure spots in the Barclays Kenya Open (BKO) PRO AM 2015 championship next year. But the tough-talking union pledged to host top local professional golfers for two legs of four days of golf in readiness for the 2015 BKO set to be hosted by the Karen Golf Club. “We have made deliberate investments by facilitating golf clinics at club level. We believe the robust training programme implemented for our local and regional players will result in a pool of strong players who will represent Kenya at local and international events,” Okwara said. The official said he is optimistic this year’s event will have a more competitive cadre of players after the union carried out intense golf clinics. Since the circuit was introduced in 2012, Barclays has splashed Sh62 million into the competition, and Sh83 million for the PGA-led Barclays Kenya Open. This year’s series will be hosted in 14 clubs.

of the career Grand Slam. And over four days at Royal Liverpool, he had no equal.“I’m immensely proud of myself,” McIlroy said after his two-shot victory Sunday that was never really in doubt. “To sit here, 25 years of age, and win my third major champi-onship and be three-quarters of the way to a career Grand

Slam ..yeah, I never dreamed of being at this point in my career so quickly.”He had to work a little harder than he wanted for this one. Staked to a six-shot lead going into the final round, McIlroy turned back every challenge. He made two key birdies around the turn, and delivered a majestic drive at just the

right moment to close with a 1-under 71 and complete his wire-to-wire victory. In another major lacking ten-sion over the final hour, what brought The Open to life was the potential of its champion. After nearly two years of tur-moil, McIlroy looked like the kid who shattered records to win the 2011 US Open.

Commonwealth 1, 500 champion Silas Kiplagat produced the shock of the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Monaco as he outsprinted Asbel Kiprop to win in 3:27.64 on Friday. Kiprop had gone into the race with Hicham El Guerrouj’s 16-year-old world record of 3:26.00 in his sights. The mark was missed by 1.64, but not by the two-time world cham-

pion but by Kiplagat.Kiplagat judged his finish perfectly to surge ahead in a 54.41 last lap and cruise over the line in a world-leading and Diamond League record. The mark puts him fourth on the world all-time list behind just El Guerrouj, Bernard Lagat and Noured-dine Morceli, leapfrogging Kiprop, who on Friday clocked 3:28.45.

As for Kiplagat, he is now thinking in terms of mounting a world record attempt himself. “I have the fastest time now, but why not be faster and attack the world record?” he said.“I’m still young and ready to train for it. I always run well here, so I’m thinking my win and result is no surprise. I was aware I can do it.”

A disappointed Kiprop said he will have to wait longer if his dream of breaking the world record will come to pass. “We went through in 2.47 and I had asked for 2.45. In the home straight, I could see the others behind me on the big screen and I knew they would get back on me. I could see Silas coming closer and closer. It was a tough race.”

Manchester United fans can expect further new signings in the coming weeks, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has assured. New boss Louis van Gaal has so far spent Sh6.7b on defender Luke Shaw and midfielder Ander Herrera. And Woodward promised there would be no repeat of last summer’s disappointments in the transfer window. “There is no fixed budget. Financially we are extremely strong. We want to do what it takes to win the title,” Ed Woodward said.“There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes,” Woodward said. “Watch this space.” Last summer, following the appointment of David Moyes as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor, Woodward failed to secure the club’s key targets and ended up signing only Marouane Fellaini for Sh3.2b from Everton before the transfer deadline. Van Gaal is using the club’s current trip to the

United States to assess what further changes need to be made. And Woodward has promised the funds are in place to back the manager’s plans. “There is no fixed budget,” he said. “Financially we are extremely strong. We want to do what it takes to win the title.” New arrivals will be accompanied by departures. Nemanja Vidic has already joined Inter Milan while Rio Ferdinand has left for QPR and it is anticipated Patrice Evra will join Juventus imminently, having asked United to leave. Van Gaal has a ready-made replacement for Evra in Shaw, 19, who became the fourth most expensive defender ever when he made Sh3.2b move from Southampton in June. Former Red Devils full-back Denis Irwin is confident the teenager has the ability required to be a long-term success at the club.

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger wants to speak to Jack Wilshere this week after the England midfield-er attracted negative headlines this week. Wenger believes the pending season could be pivotal if the player is to reach his full potential.Wilshere was criticised by the manager last season after he was pictured smoking a cigarette outside a nightclub and, in the aftermath, pledged it would not happen again. But the 22-year-old was photo-graphed smoking again this week while on holiday. Wenger, while not overly concerned, wants to find out what exactly happened. “I haven’t spoken to him so it’s very difficult for me to make any statement,” said the manager. “I know what you can make of pictures – I have to speak to him really to see what happened before I come out publicly.“I’m not deeply concerned by it. I just want to know what happened and before I know what happened, I don’t want to talk too much about it.”A common consensus is that

Wilshire’s career has stalled over recent years, with injury and fluctu-ating form taking a hold.Wenger insists next season could be an important one for the player. “He’s at an age where you want him

to move forward,” he said. “Jack is a great player – he has a football brain and he’s ambitious. I’m sure that (if) he’s injury free, he will have a great season.”

Wenger to speak with Wilshere over puff Salah won’t be called up for egypt army service

Ed Woodward promises more Man U new signings

The threat of national service hanging over Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah’s soccer career has been lifted after Egyptian prime minister cancelled his potential military call-up.Salah’s registration to an educational programme allowed him to avoid national service. His stay in England was rescinded - leaving the 22-year-old facing a real problem of having to return home for a period of 12 months to three years. But the former Basel winger has been given the all-clear to continue his career after high-ranking talks involving Egytian prime minister Ibrahim Mahlab.Mahlab held a meeting with Egypt’s national coach Shawky Gharib and their Minister for Higher Education - and after announcing Salah’s fate he reportedly said the decision

could have been ‘threatening’ to Egyptian football.Neither Chelsea nor Salah received any official communication informing the player he would have to return to Egypt although the club are believed to have spoken to their January signing about the issue. Salah will be required to travel along with the rest of the Chelsea squad to Austria later today to begin their pre-season tour without the threat of a move back to Egypt hanging over his head. The winger has got off to a decent start in London since his Sh1.3b move from Basel in January, scoring in games against Arsenal and Stoke at Stamford Bridge. He also scored the equaliser in Chelsea’s 3-2 friendly win against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

American football officially launched in Kenya at UoN

Following the shock 1-0 defeat to Lesotho yesterday, Kenya will need to be tactically sound and flawless in finish-ing if they have to make it to the group stages of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.Kenya will have to score more than two goals against Lesotho without conceding to advance to the group stage of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Besides missing Amrouche, Harambee Stars were also without a number of foreign-based profes-sional players. They fell to a 65th minute goal by Bushy

Moletsane. Amrouche’s three assistants James Nandwa and Ken Odhiambo and Amars Niyongabo opted for a packed midfield in an ultra-defensive 4-5-1 formation. In the absence of first choice goalkeeper Arnold Origi, Wil-son Oburu started between the sticks with James Situma, Aboud Omar, David Owino and David Ochieng providing defensive cover. Peter Opiyo, Francis Kahata, Victor Wanyama, Cliffton Miheso and the ineffective David Gateri formed the five-man midfield with Allan

Wanga starting upfront as the lone striker.MacDonald Mariga and Jamal Mohamed were also introduced late in the match in place of Kahata and Gateri, but the tactic failed to break down the resolute Lesotho. Gateri, who only linked dup with the team on Saturday, started ahead of Mariga. Despite his shortcomings, Oliech is the best forward the country has, the sometimes highly unreasonable and unforgiving Amrouche need to perch up their difference and call the forward to the

national set up having missed three matches now since the unceremonious fall out between the two.Football Kenya Federation president Sam Nyamweya believe Stars will emphatically beat Lesotho in the return leg set for August 3 at the Afraha Stadium to advance to the group stages.“I have faith in the team that they will overrun their oppo-nents and qualify, we have the players to get the job done, with home fans playing their role, I don’t see a reason kenya will not advance,” he said.

American football has been officially launched in Kenya. Speaking during the launch at the University of Nairobi,International Federation of American Football President Tommy Wikings said launching the game in Kenya is a platform for expanding the game in the region.“The task is not for you (pioneers) to play the game, but to open way for others who are coming after you,” Wiking said. He pledged support for the UoN team, but only after the university administration gives the team some support first. The team has 46 dedicated members. The teams captain George Alwang’a, a fifth year mechanical engineering undergraduate said for

once they feel great playing knowing that they can play outside the country.“This launch means a lot to us,” said the captain. “It means players can now play fully motivated since they feel inspired more than ever.”He added that being a member of the IFAF is not a mere achievement for the footballers. “It means we qualify to participate in all the IFAF tournaments because the launch is official.” This launch came following the end of the All African University Games at the University of Nairobi in which Egypt emerged top with 112 medals (66 gold medals), Ghana with 19 medals (11 gold medals) and Kenya was third placed with 68 medals (8 gold medals).

ON THE ROAD: Harambee Stars players pose for photos with their head coach Adel Amrouche before leaving for Brazil to watch the 2014 World Cup. The trip was meant to expose them to international football, but it seems the knowledge gained was not applicable in the match against Lesotho, which they lost 1-0.
