Presidentrsquos Column

Last month was an awfully busy month but it was fun as well as I needed a lot of my

project management skills and experience to rescue what we had worked on for month

Managing projects for me still is a synonym for fun as it means that you are working on

making a difference facilitating your customer or principal to accelerate their ambition

Thatrsquos what motivates me to do everything possible to deliver Why than did we need

severe action to rescue this project I think it has to do with the lack of understanding at a

supplier in this case what really matter to the customer what the project is all about

Project success for sure is much more than delivering agreed scope on time and within

budget To a certain extent with lots of comments that is precisely what the supplier did

Nevertheless supplier frustrated customer frustrated Project Manager the only happy

guy as in situations like this he can use the full wealth of his skills and experience We are

on track again but why is this happening so often Why did we hear similar experiences from the Greenery at

our latest chapter event at the premises of our new partner INSynQ Why are we very interested in real stories

about real projects

As in my example and in many examples you can think of project success and failure are very close so we

decided to have this as our Summit 2014 theme (see wwwpmi-netherlands-summitcom) We compiled a

program worthwhile at least considering of attending Seats are still available

Besides I could do with a bit of help in preparing myself for the Summit a kind crowd thinking so to speak I

need to provide a 10 minutes talk to introduce the Summit I would like to use this opportunity to share your

thoughts on project success and failure What is project success to you it that something we can measure or

alternatively can we define when we consider a project a failure So I need your input on this Join me on

linkedin Help me to define the thin line between project failure and success

Looking forward to you crowd thought and hope to see you at our Summit or at our chapter meeting that is

hosted by Kembit on May 21st Details in this newsletter and of course at wwwpmi-netherlands-chapterorg

Thatrsquos it for now Letrsquos keep up to good work Enjoy being a project manager enjoy being part of the PMI

community in the Netherlands

From the desk of the Director Events

Dear all

I would like to start this monthly update from the Events desk by informing you

once again about the upcoming May events

middot The Program Management LIWg Revival in Utrecht on May 6

middot The Chapter meeting with this time as topic Decision-making processes in

political sensitive environments on May 21 in Eindhoven

Please take a look at our website to find more details and to register

Results World Cafeacute discussions at the annual meeting

Our annual meeting combined with a world cafeacute in which we were asking for

your input was received very well and today we have a summary of the outcomes for you (thanks to Ben

Bolland who volunteered to write these down) What did we do We asked several question which were

answered in groups The groups then switched members to re-evaluate and sharpen the answers and

recommendations After a few table switches the chairmen of the different tables were asked to present the

results from their tables

A summary in key words

Question 1 What is happening in the current world of Project Management

- Increasing attention for environment health safety

- More demand for more standard solutions

- More requirements for (big) data (also for managing KPIrsquos) and reporting

- We see more PMOrsquos coming up (to support the demand for reporting measurement and admin work)

There were also some concerns that there is some devaluation of the PMP value but there is still an increased

need for more accreditation The team felt that Project Management is increasing to be seen as a lsquorealrsquo

profession which is asking for more certification

Question 2 What do these TRENDS mean to our profession

- Bringing Professional PM experience to the business (IT perspective)

- Shift from PM to value management (focus on results more self-steering teams) More selling the

project than doing PM

- Position the Chief Project Officer in the board to get also better recognition for project management as a

profession and standardization

- Need to keep change the way to execute projects Agile restrictions webbased training lean-mean

companies etc

Question 3 What could the PMI-NL Chapter do to support you even better

- Capture trends and provide info via PMI so to make sure we are frontrunners of the profession

- Offer Volunteering PM-services to communities (for good causes bv Roparun Alpdu6hellip)

- Facilitate broader events incl CUSTOMERS (ie not only internal attention but involving line

management more)

- More World Cafe-like interactive session is positive inspiring and refreshing

- Facilitate webmeetings on interesting topics and for sharing experiences (modern easy access no travel)

- Promote PM in the board rooms

- Promoting PM as profession bring it to high-schools and university Student membership

I expect that you can see many of this recommended improvement coming back in our 2014 2015 program to

bring you the best value possible for your PMI membership

PMI Speaker at Oil amp Gas Conference

I have been asked as Director Events of the PMI Netherlands Chapter to be one of the speakers on the Global

Forum on Project Management for the Oil and Gas industry on June 2 and 3 in Amsterdam

This is great news because it will allow us to bring the importance of the certification and accreditation of

project management and the job of project management as a whole to the attention of senior managers in the

industry (see also outcome of the World Cafeacute session) Itrsquos my intention to give the attendees a view into the

current challenges of project management in oil and gas In addition it would be nice to provide them with an

overview of trends Trends that we PMI Netherlands Chapter see in the market and which we will support to

take shape Trends that can happen due to further collaboration increased expertise and great cooperation

within teams of project management professionals

And for this I need help

If yoursquore working in the Oil amp Gas industry please fill in our survey to present the latest and greatest to the

senior managers attending the conference

Go to httptinyurlcompmi-oil-gas and fill in the survey

By doing this you help us as your chapter to improve how we should support you but more importantly we

can make leaders in your industry aware on how they should improve facilitate or change their projects for the

better Thanks in advance for helping out

Let me end this article by asking for YOUR HELP once more we are always very much interested in interesting

speakers for coming chapter meeting Feel free to drop me an email when you have an interesting topic or an

gifted presenter speaker at eventspmi-netherlands-chapterorg

A fabulous evening at our new Partner INSynQ Our latest chapter meeting was hosted by our new partner INSynQ In parallel to the focus area of INSynQ the

meeting was all about SAP After a short introduction of INSynQ by Peter Oueumlndag Wim

van de Wiel and Huub Janssen discussed their project approach at the Greenery

They were able to turn a rather disastrous project into a success How What I learned

are a few simple lessons like practice what you preach turn it from push into pull donrsquot

forget about your users eventually they are all that matters and keep it stupid simple In

a very honest and open dialogue Wim and Huub took us into the real world of mushroom

logistics From that understanding and their passion for delivering success they start

building a very successful SAP implementation Simple thing nothing fancy Two feet in

the mud

After the break Jens Broetzmann explained why SAP embraced Agile adding

specific flavours to align it to the SAP needs Why Because Agile is all about

creating a dialogue with all parties involved is about short iterations to

ensure constant touch basing with business representatives is about

flexibility towards the deliverables is about prioritizing Is Agile then the

solution for everything Absolutely not but is fits in nicely into the SAP best

practices when comes to software development and process integration

Add a splendid buffet and enjoyable drinks at the end to this recipe and the

only conclusion can be that we had a great evening at our new partner

INSynQ Thank you speakers thank you partner

Welcome to our 850th member of PMI Netherlands My name is Annet Rozema I work at Astellas Pharma Europe BV in Leiden Astellas is

a midsize global pharmaceutical company with headquarters in Tokyo

In over 14 years working for Astellas I have had several positions in various

departments Since September 2012 I am a member of the Global Project

Management Department where I am one of the Project Managers of drug

development projects The ultimate goal of the drug development process is to

submit a regulatory dossier to the authorities (eg FDA EMA) to obtain marketing

approval of our new medicines and contribute to patientsrsquo medical need

My development project team is multifunctional as well as multicultural There is a physician in my team a

statistician a toxicologist project managers clinical pharmacologists drug development specialists the team

of 14 colleagues consists of no less than 8 nationalities That is why Astellas is for me ldquoa great place to workrdquo

As Project Manager my main responsibilities are to manage timelines and budget of the project(s) as well as

to coordinate project team meetings Drug development projects usually have a global focus and can last up to

10 years after the start of testing of the medicine in humans At this moment one of the ongoing clinical studies

in my project cover 45 countries worldwide Total development costs for new medicines exceed a billion Euro

and these costs are increasing every year

Astellas supports me in my intention to become PMI certified In the past months I participated in a PMP

coaching class which I found worthwhile It is my aim to take the exam somewhere this summer

Other Project Managers of our department are also PMP certified that is nice since it stimulates discussions

about PMI about the PMBOK principles and how these relate to our day to day work at Astellas

industry (see also outcome of the World Cafeacute session) Itrsquos my intention to give the attendees a view into the

current challenges of project management in oil and gas In addition it would be nice to provide them with an

overview of trends Trends that we PMI Netherlands Chapter see in the market and which we will support to

take shape Trends that can happen due to further collaboration increased expertise and great cooperation

within teams of project management professionals

speakers for coming chapter meeting Feel free to drop me an email when you have an interesting topic or an

gifted presenter speaker at eventspmi-netherlands-chapterorg

- Promoting PM as profession bring it to high-schools and university Student membership

current challenges of project management in oil and gas In addition it would be nice to provide them with an

overview of trends Trends that we PMI Netherlands Chapter see in the market and which we will support to

take shape Trends that can happen due to further collaboration increased expertise and great cooperation

Go to httptinyurlcompmi-oil-gas and fill in the survey

better Thanks in advance for helping out

In over 14 years working for Astellas I have had several positions in various

departments Since September 2012 I am a member of the Global Project

Management Department where I am one of the Project Managers of drug

about PMI about the PMBOK principles and how these relate to our day to day work at Astellas

- Promoting PM as profession bring it to high-schools and university Student membership

gifted presenter speaker at eventspmi-netherlands-chapterorg

Add a splendid buffet and enjoyable drinks at the end to this recipe and the

only conclusion can be that we had a great evening at our new partner

departments Since September 2012 I am a member of the Global Project

My development project team is multifunctional as well as multicultural There is a physician in my team a

statistician a toxicologist project managers clinical pharmacologists drug development specialists the team

As Project Manager my main responsibilities are to manage timelines and budget of the project(s) as well as
