ACL injuries are one the more unfortunate injuries seen in female High School athletes, and even in our community,we see many of these injuries each year. Athletic Trainers work with the women’s teams at MHS to try and prevent this injury from occurring. Using strength exercises and jump/land training, studies have shown implementing a non-contact ACL prevention program like this can decrease the incidence of this injury by 50-70 percent.

In Motion Therapy also provides a free sports clinic for athletes in our out of season program every week day from 8AM to 6PM. This accessibility to care makes it possible for athletes to begin their seasons without injury and help them get back quickly if they are suffering.

e Coach V era has started for the Montrose boys basketball team.

Ryan Voehringer returned to coach his alma mater this summer, bringing in a new focus on discipline and intensity.

He gets to jump start that message with a big group of seniors this season.

“ e big thing for me is these seven seniors,” he said. “ ey’ve been in the program and they want to win. It’s a process but we are where we need to be.”

Two of those seniors, Jake Miller and Kyle Freeburg, are taking on that new style of leadership.

ey both recognized how di erent practices were under Voehringer during summer tournaments and workouts.

“It’s been faster and harder,” Miller said. “ e expectations are high and we’re going to try and meet them.”

Voehringer played three years of varsity basketball for Montrose, graduating in 1995.

He started coaching at Valley High School in Gilcrest in 2005, and nished his nine seasons there with a 143-82 record. He won two conference titles, four regional titles, reaching the nal 8

four times and the nal 4 three times.

Montrose nished last season with a 10-14 record a er starting the year with ve wins in its rst nine games.

Voehringer is working in some new systems on o ense to take advantage of some versatility.

“You have to go with what your strengths are,” he said. “We have guys that can go inside and we have good shooters. If we can learn to read and react to what the defense is giving us I think we can be pretty good.”

e other end of the oor needs to have three characteristics for Voehringer’s team. It will be hard-nosed, disciplined and solid, which will also lead to good o ense.

“Defense is the primary focus and failure isn’t an option,” Miller said.

e players have also noticed the expectations.

Freeburg said practices follow Voehringer’s message: “If you do it right now, it’s going to be better the rest of the season.”

“He is really trying to drill it into the back of our heads,” Freeburg said.

Miller will play point guard for the Indians a er taking over those duties last season and averaged more than eight points and two steals a game.

Freeburg, a 6-foot-3-inch foward, led the team last year by averaging more than 15 points.

Senior foward Cole Auker, who missed half of last season because of an injury, returns to the post a er averaging 8.4 points and 6.1 rebounds in nine games last year.

Freeburg played more in the paint a er Auker’s injury, which he said taught him lessons on how physical the game can be.

“ is year I’ve focused on keeping control of myself and being stronger with the ball because, especially in the league, it’s a lot more physical,” he said.

e other seniors to lead the team are center Justin Peterson, forward Joey Eckerman and guards Cameron Leblanc and Josue Perez.

“Kyle and I, and a bunch of these seniors have been playing together since we were 8 years old,” Miller said. “It’s been a ride and we’re looking forward to senior year.”

Voehringer hopes the younger guys quickly learn from this group of seniors and how they buy into the system he wants to develop. e group has already set high expectations.

“It’s a process, it’s not like ipping a switch

on to get there,” Voehringer said. “It’s going to take some time, but I think with the leadership from the seniors we have, we’re headed where we need to be.”

Montrose starts the season with a tournament in Glenwood Springs on Dec.

12, and doesn’t play a home game until Jan. 17 against Ri e.

ree tournaments in the rst half of the season include the tough schedule Voehringer wants.

For the players, they have already started seeing changes a er playing well in a few summer tournaments.

“We’ve had some people come up to us and be like, ‘Montrose is one of the most disciplined teams we’ve seen,’ which is new coming from us,” Miller said.

ere is plenty of excitement lling the Montrose high school gym when the girls basketball team takes the oor.

Last season was supposed to be a regrouping year, and that was before starting guard Holly Brooks was lost for the season with a knee injury.

en the Indians proved everyone wrong by winning 16 games and advancing to the second round of the 4A state tournament.

at same team is back on the court a er losing just one senior, and now they get Brooks, among a few other injured players, back for a full season.

“We’re all super excited,” senior Stephanie Rowan said. “We’ve been playing together since sixth grade so now we kind of have our original team. Everyone gets along well and we’re excited to have everyone back from injuries and make it our year.”

Injuries last year also forced new faces into big roles for the Indians.

Rowan and junior Kaitlin Ammermann took over all the guard duties without Brooks and junior Kourtney Keltz able to play.

Rowan is the team’s defensive ace, but

the increased con dence in her shooting ability last year provided a big boost to the Montrose o ense. She averaged 5.4 points and 3.1 assists per game while leading the team with 31 three-pointers.

Ammermann, starting on varsity for the rst time, made 25 threes during her sophomore season and averaged 2.5 assists per game.

Ammermann wasn’t the only rst time starter last year. Sophomore Bryce Gatt played in all 25 games during her freshman season last year.

Sanchez is excited to have all that experience coming back this year.

“It’s going to be a huge bene t for us simply because they have that experience and it’s not going to be a wow or a shock factor when they get on the oor,” he said.

e team’s backcourt is full of con dence with Rowan, Ammermann, Brooks, Keltz and senior Audrey Alex all returning with varsity experience. Plus there is senior Brenna Gaber making the jump to varsity.

Rowan said the depth makes everyone competitive.

“Now we have everyone competing with each other but at the same time being

supportive,” she said. “It makes everyone work that much harder to get us where we want to be at the end of the season.”

e front court has plenty of experience, too.

Junior foward Elise Hill returns a er leading the team with 10.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore.

She is joined by junior Elle Pace, the team’s 6-foot-4-inch center who came o the bench and averaged more than 3 rebounds in the last 10 games of her sophomore season.

Senior Hannah Franz, at 6-feet-1-inch, will back her up down low.

Gatt played a little bit over everywhere while averaging 4.4 rebounds a game as a freshman, and then senior Michelle Tafoya will ll in down low a er averaging 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds last year.

Sanchez is excited to see all the di erent options he can put on the oor this season.

“We’re really excited as a coaching sta and as a team,” he said. “I think we can cause a lot of teams a lot of problems.”

at excitement for a successful season will come down to playing well together, Sanchez said.

“ is group has a chance to be one of the top teams in the state before it’s all said and done,” he said. “It’s not going to be easy and it’s not going to be given to us.”

Montrose starts the season with a tournament in Glenwood Springs on Dec. 12.

e Indians will play only ve home games this season because there isn’t the annual Black Canyon tournament at home and Montezuma-Cortez dropped out of the Southwestern League. eir rst home game will be on Jan. 17 against Ri e.

Sanchez said is disappointing for the team’s fans, but the girls are ready to start competing.

“ ese girls want to play and they don’t care if we have to drive to the boonies to do it,” he

said. “As long as the dimensions on the oor are the same we’re going to be ready to go.”

Alex, who returned from an injury in the middle of last season, said she can’t wait to start playing with the full team for her senior year.

“I’m so excited for this season,” she said. “I know we’ll go far.”

is year’s Montrose wrestling team had a front row seat to what hard work could accomplish last season.

ey watched Conner Lawson join the team for the rst time during his senior season, never stop working, and then qualify for the state tournament.

“If that didn’t motivate kids, I don’t know what will,” coach Neil Samples said. “ at kid knew nothing about wrestling, stepped up here and won matches on just pure want to win.”

e seniors on this year’s squad got the message.

“He just went hard all the time and he won a lot of matches he shouldn’t have,” senior Ethan Davis said. “I would like to instill that into these guys. Even if you’re not the most skilled wrestler, if you work you’re butt o and go as hard as you can, you’ll win a lot of matches.”

Four Indians made it to the state tournament last season, but three of them graduated.

e returning competitor is junior Terrell Banuelos, who nished fourth in the 106-pound weight class last

season.

Even though there is only one returning state quali er, the Indians have their eyes set on big goals this year.

“ is year we’re going to go for six or maybe even more to place at state to be up there and start getting Montrose back into the wrestling prime,” senior Austin Delgado said.

Delgado made it to the second day of regionals in the 152-pound bracket last year, but slides into the 145-pound spot this season.

Davis will take over at 152-pounds with a state title on his mind. As for the team, he wants them to be working hard every week.

“I would like to see everybody get better each week,” he said. “As long as everyone is getting better and going hard, then I’m okay with it.”

A handful of wrestlers are returning with varsity experience a er last season, mostly in the lower weight classes.

Senior Ricky Padilla wrestled a match at 113-pounds last season before

sophomore Gus Reed took the spot.

Sophomore Ian Meek nished last season in the 120-pound spot, and junior Je Dick competed at 132.

“We had young guys last year and we have a few seniors this year that have the potential to do some good things. I’m excited,” Samples said. “We have some kids that could do some really good things if they step up and believe in themselves.

“Heart is 90 percent of any sport,” Samples added. “If you have that you can be successful. ese guys need to know that. It’s not about skill all the time, it’s about wanting to win.”

Montrose starts the season by hosting Delta on Dec. 4. The Indians later compete at Olathe on Dec. 18 but don’t wrestle again at home until Jan. 9 against Golden.

 e leaders for the 2014-2015

team have set some high goals, but they learned what hard work and determination could accomplish last season.

“It doesn’t matter how many years you have into wrestling,” Delgado said. “If you work hard and you go hard every single day, you will get where you want to and you will place high.”

ere are many new faces in the pool for the Montrose girls swimming team this season.Four of the eight Indians who quali ed for the state meet last year are returning, while at least six members of the team are new to competitive swimming.Coach Ellen Erickson said all the new swimmers will make the season interesting, but the hard work is already taking place.“I have 28 girls coming out and they’re all working hard and they’re all looking pretty good,” she said. e four returning a er reaching the state meet last year are senior Callie Storter, junior Hope Morris, and sophomores Alli Fields and Kendra TenNapel.Erickson said the group has already set goals of getting all three relay teams quali ed for the state touranment. Last season they quali ed for the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay.“I think we have a really good chacne to get our 400-free relay quali ed this year,” Erickson said. ose girls also plan to return to state in their individual events.Fields competed in the 200-yard freestyle

and the 500-yard freestyle at state last year as a freshman. Now she wants to make it to the coveted nals races on the second day of state.“It would be pretty incredible,” she said. “ e team didn’t make it last year and I know the seniors were kind of missing out.”Storter snuck into the state meet in the 100-yard breaststroke last season, reaching the qualifying time at the regional meet.“I met that goal last year and it was kind of unexpected,” she said. “It just happened to be where I was competing hard, looked up and was super surprised.”Getting back in that state race is one of her goals, along with nally breaking through in the 50-yard freestyle race, something she has worked to accomplish since her freshman season.“I’ve always been so close but I couldn’t get it,” she said.Morris also quali ed in the 100-yard breaststroke. at group of state quali ers is working with the group of new faces to get ready for the season.Fields, who has grown up swimming with the Montrose Marlins, said

it’s a combination of teaching and leading by example.“We teach them and other times we compete against them to give them something to aspire to,” Fields said.Part of that includes understanding the hard work needed in practice.Storter said senior leadership means pushing young swimmers through the tough workouts, even when they, themselves are hurting, too.“Swimming takes a lot of mental toughness,” Storter said. “It hurts, swimming is a painful sport. You have to push yourself.”Storter, who also swims the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard freestyle, already knows it will be the kind of season that requires all

the hard work.

“We’re going to have to grind it but hopefully something good can happen by the end of a season,” she said.

Montrose starts the season with a meet in Durango on Dec. 5, and later the Indians host the Montrose Swim Meet on Dec. 19 and 20, plus the Montrose Invite on Jan. 16.

Erickson said it’s been fun to watch the progress in the young swimmers through just the rst few weeks of practice.

“Some of the new ones we’ve seen 100 percent improvement from a month ago to right now,” she said.

A er winning a girls varsity state title last season, the climbers are returning to practice with a renewed dedication to continued improvement. “I’m so ready for this year,” Rebekah Shearer, a senior and last year’s individual girls state title winner, said. “I think we have a really strong team starting out.”Shearer and teammates Brooke Brennecke, a senior, and Isabella Baas, a sophomore, were the team’s top scorers at the state competition last year and will be shooting for another top performance this season. Brennecke is working to return to the team from an o -season shoulder injury. “I’m excited for this year’s climbing season,” Brennecke said. “I think this team has a lot of potential. ere are a lot of good younger kids on the team that could live up to the team’s title

when it’s their turn.” On the boys’ side of the Montrose team, senior Ben Case leads a talented core of climbers hoping to make an impression at upcoming competitions. Case placed 18th as an individual at last year’s state competition. Case said training for the winter season starts with setting a baseline. “It really just starts with getting climbing back on the wall for the rst time and seeing where you’re at,” he said. Coach Adam O’Bryan will return with his unique training style. O’Bryan lends experience from his background in competitive swimming to train the climbers in both physical preparation and climbing technique. “I think training is huge,” O’Bryan said. “Since I come from the world of competitive swimming, I really understand and respect the balance between the physical and the technical aspects of climbing.”Climbing competitions feature bouldering and top-roping routes, and reward climbers who can succeed at

both styles. O’Bryan’s training, therefore, works to prepare his team with strength, endurance and technique.“I want the MHS climbers to have the power necessary for bouldering, the endurance necessary for top-roping and the technique necessary to send routes with sketchy footholds or awkward, challenging moves,” he said. is year’s climbing team is split in half, with about 15 of the 30 members returning from last year and the other half coming in fresh. For the returning team members, the experienced group knows what it needs to do in practices to succeed at meets. Both Shearer and Case placed in the top-3 at an early competition this season, and both have set high goals for the rest of the year. “For me, getting back in the gym, it’s just seeing where I’m at and then taking it farther than I did last year — training in di erent ways on weaknesses I had last year and trying to make those into strengths,” Shearer said. Case is looking to earn a place on the podium at the state competition, with strong nishes at the competitions along

the way. Among all the team’s goals, though, the primary focus of the climbing team is to give its members a chance to improve at an activity they enjoy.“At the end of the day … my primary goal for the MHS climbing team is that these kids have a safe, positive place to go where

they can get stronger and push themselves beyond their limits all while supporting and encouraging their teammates and learning about a life-long activity that I’ve come to love,” O’Bryan said.

Boys basketball games at Olathe High School are going to have a fundamentally di erent look in the 2014-15 season — a new coaching sta will push the Pirates to increase the pace of the game.

Rich Tafoya enters as the new head coach this season, and he brings a di erent approach to the boys’ game. Instead of the possession-heavy game the Pirates have played in recent seasons, Tafoya is looking to emphasize the speed of his players with a fast-breaking o ense.

“If you look at our personnel, we don’t have height, we don’t push inside very well,” Tafoya said. “So it’s all speed — and we’ve got a lot of it. We’re going to take whatever we have and try to utilize it the best we can.”

A total transition in the team’s style of basketball is taking time to adjust to, but, fortunately, the team and its new coach do not have as much adjustment to overcome.

Tafoya, although he is new to the

varsity head coaching position, is already familiar with his roster from coaching players in younger age groups, on recreational and on traveling teams.

“It’s been easy,” he said. “I’ve known most of these kids since they were little. I’ve been able to watch them play basketball for a long time now.”

For returning seniors like Mitchell Carlson, Deven McMurdy and Cesar Perez, the Pirates’ new system is a change — but one they can enjoy.

“Everyone’s liking what we’re doing on o ense. e defense is trapping. It looks good,” Carlson said.

“We’re picking it up fast and working hard,” McMurdy added.

Tafoya is inheriting a program that has seen its share of low times. e Olathe boys have recorded just one winning season over the past nine years — a 15-8-0 year under previous coach Lance Ready in 2011-12 — and last year won only one game to

Part of changing the Pirates’ system includes changing the way the boys approach the game. “ e biggest thing we want to do is improve on their self-con dence,” Tafoya said. “If we can get them con dent we can get them playing a lot better, and if we can start playing a lot better we’ll start winning games.”

Tafoya said he wants the boys to have fun, and that’s another part of bringing a fast-paced style of play to the Pirates’ organization.

“ ey love to play basketball the way

we’re coaching,” he said.

“When we introduced it, they weren’t really sure what the o ense really meant, what it was all about, but they quickly realized that it was a game that t their style. ey’ve caught on really well and they’ve worked really hard to implement it.”

e Pirates’ schedule starts with a hard stretch of road games, beginning at Delta High School on Dec. 4 and continuing to Paonia, Meeker and Grand Valley. Olathe’s rst home game is Jan. 24 against Coal Ridge.

Four players who started every game last season for the Olathe High School girls basketball team return this season as seniors. Taylor Gibson, Peyton Grett, Amanda Kinterknecht and eresa Tafoya form a core of experience and athleticism for the Pirates, who this year will be hungry for a chance to advance in the 3A State Tournament. Olathe last season earned the No. 12 seed in the state and won a game in its regional bracket, 54-9 over Denver Science and Tech Stapleton, to advance to the round of 16. ere, the Pirates were eliminated from the tournament by No. 5 seed Peak to Peak, 49-38. Having the four seniors return this year will be a huge boost to the team’s con dence as it contends in the Western Slope League and works toward another state berth. “We’ve got four seniors that every one of them started every game last year,” coach Paul Althaus said. “I think that’s going to be huge for us. I think there’s a lot of con dence on

their part. ey’ve played together for a long time and they’re very trusting and con dent in each other.” at con dence improves nearly every aspect of the Pirates’ game, Tafoya said. “It does wonders. It just makes us play harder, more aggressive,” she said. Postseason goals are on the minds of the players, but they’re not letting themselves look too far ahead. “Our main goal is state, but that starts here in practice and we’ve just got to get better day by day,” Kinterknecht said. “I think all of us are working hard,” Grett added. “We know what we need to do and we’re playing like we need to.” e senior group is supported by a strong group of underclassmen, ready to earn their share of the playing time this season. Juniors Shelby Anderson, Taylor Brown, Vanessa Ceballos and Emily Mundy are all ready to step up. “I think our supporting cast is stronger this year than it was last year. We’re a

lot more experienced, we’ve got some age on us, and I think good things will happen because of that,” Althaus said.

e team will maintain its focus on disciplined defense and let the o ense break on the opportunities created on the defensive end. Althaus is also working in a few new looks on o ense that he said will compliment the players’ abilities.

No one knows the abilities of this team better than the team members themselves — many of them have been playing together since elementary and

middle school programs. Getting back into the rhythm of basketball season is familiar, they said.“It’s always fun to get back with these girls and get it going, because we know each other and we’ll push one another — and that’s what we need this year,” Grett said. e Pirates have a goal set to nish at the top of their league and compete for a district championship on the way to the state tournament, Althaus said. “ at’s where we plan on being,” he said. “We’re going to play one game at a time and do what we need to each time — come out to win,” Grett said.

Inked on the wall in the Olathe High School wrestling room is a quotation: “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.”

e Pirates return to the wrestling room with intent to prove that moniker true. Seven team members returning to the Olathe lineup this year were at the 3A State Wrestling Championships last season, and each faced challenges.

Returning senior Austin Shank placed third in the state last year at 132 pounds. Other state quali ers returning to the team include juniors Jake Jiminez, Chayden Harris, Trent Rose, Felix Pena and John Needham, and sophomore Andrew Godfrey.

“We’ve got seven returning state quali ers and the one placer; we’re going to take and build on that. I know there were some guys who weren’t too happy with the way they nished, so they’ve been in here busting it pretty hard,” Olathe head coach TeeJay Rose said.

e vision of returning to the state tournament and winning a

championship — as a team and as individual wrestlers — is the fuel in preseason practices this year. It’s what sets this team apart from others, Shank said.

“I think the willingness for everyone to work hard and how far everyone is willing to go, how hard they’ll push themselves, is a big factor,” he said.

“We just have to keep busting it in here all the time and keep pushing each other,” Jiminez added.

e team has its share of experience with the contingent of state quali ers, but it also has its share of young wrestlers. Maintaining a con dent attitude and keeping up morale through grueling practices will be key to helping the younger team members advance.

“As long as nobody goes on the mat scared, we’ll be just ne,” Shank said.

e experienced Pirates wrestlers are passing on a tradition of hard work to their underclassmen teammates — what you put in is what you get out, Harris said.

“We have to always be looking for room to improve. at will be key,” he said. “I feel like we could really have potential if we put forth that kind of e ort.”

e team is deep from the 145-pound to 170-pound weight classes and a little more sparse at the lighter and heavier ends of the spectrum, but coaching sta is con dent that issue will sort itself out with time.

“I think we’re going to be fairly full, we’re just going to be a little thin in some of (the weight classes),” Rose said.

Rose called the team a fun group to work with because so many of the wrestlers are

bringing a focus and determination to practice already.

“It’s pretty amazing this early in the season,” he said. “We’ll see what happens.”

e Pirates will look to make a statement in their rst match of the season, Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Mesa Duals at Colorado Mesa University. e state tournament is always on the minds of wrestlers in the proud Olathe program, though, and it will be the team’s driving force through the year.

“We’re always looking for that state championship,” Harris said.
