A BIG THANKS to the Parks staff for their work on Burlingame’s two new facilities: The Bocce Ball Courts and the Community Garden

Message from Margaret...

Bob is truly dedicated to the City of Burlingame. Not only has he worked for the City for 20 years, but he is a longtime resident and

even went to St. Catherine! Bob is the Parks Supervisor, as well as the

City Arborist. Bob and his crew have been very busy lately with

the new Bocce Courts, Community Garden, planting over 300 trees,

and maintaining the landscaping at all the City Parks.

Burlingame is lucky to have Bob!

Director of the Parks and Recreation Department

Happy New Year!

In an effort to better serve our community, the Parks and Recreation Department staff is always looking to improve programming, facilities and ways to reach out to our customers which includes partnerships to help provide programs.

In 2013, the Department was excited to open the new Bocce Ball Courts and Community Garden. We also began the Community Center Master Design process as well as reestab-lished a fire break in Mills Canyon. In 2014, some of the improvements the Department will be working on include improvements to the Dog Park, replacing many city park pathways and installing new restrooms in Village Park.

As you will see throughout this brochure there are several new programs, age offerings and partnerships. From the Peninsula Music Together class for babies and toddlers to new adult fitness classes, there is something for every member of our community. And don’t forget aquatics classes. Our partners, the Burlingame Aquatics Club offers a full spec-trum of aquatics programming.

We encourage anyone who has new ideas for programs, wants to voice a concern, and/or would like to get involved in either a volunteer role or through teaching classes, to please let us know.

We hope that you like the programs that the winter brochure brings and look forward to another great season in Burlingame.

Preschool Drawing (age 3.5-5) with Young Rembrandts Young students are so eager to learn and a joy to teach. Our classes provide a nurturing and strong learning environment that expands preschoolers’ image vocabulary as they draw familiar images such as fish, teddy bears, rainbows and cowboys. We’ll concentrate on the skills of drawing and coloring while we develop fine motor skills, focus, listening, staying on task, patience and spatial organization. The Burlingame Elementary Enrichment Program has consistently provided a variety of classes for students at all 5 of the Burlingame Elementary Schools. Classes are held at the school sites after school; children may attend classes at schools in which they do not attend during the regular

school day. Children who take after school programs over the course of their lifetime consistently improve test scores in school, have better than average social skills, and tend to participate in less mishievous activities.

After school enrichment programs have a proven benefit for your children, your family, and the community. Thank you for supporting the Burlingame Elementary Enrichment Program! Space is limited, register before classes fill.

After School Enrichment Play (1st-5th) with National Academy Of AthleticsPLAY is our answer to today's over-structured and over-scheduled kids. They enjoy hanging out with their peers in the gym, black tops and fields where they are able to set the rules and play with limited guidance from our supervisors. Our PLAY program uses structured simple activities, individual and team building challenges. The objective is to bring back the "old school" spirit of playing sports, reminiscent of the days of yesteryear where kids played sports in their local neighborhoods and sandlots just for the sake of competing and having fun with their friends. Active Adults Driver Safety Program (age 50+) with AARP Developed by the American Association of Retired Persons (A.A.R.P.), Driver Safety Program is the first comprehensive driver retraining course geared to the specific needs of older motorists. The course material covers the effects of aging and medications on driving, basic driving rules, license renewal, local traffic hazards, adverse road conditions, energy saving, and accident prevention measures.Research shows that older drivers are involved in no more accidents than their middle-age counterparts when the record is based on actual miles driven. However, research also indicates that older persons can improve their driving abilities through additional training, attention, and practice, enabling them to maintain their driving licenses longer while driving safer. California enacted legislation in 1987 requiring all automobile insurance companies to provide a discount to graduates of state-approved driver improvement courses.
