VALLEYFAirThrills for the whole family

Get ready for excitement and thrills at Valleyfair Amusement Park. Enjoy more than 75 rides and attractions, plenty of games,

and lots of food. Valleyfair offers eight wicked roller coasters, including Renegade, Wild Thing, Steel Venom, High Roller, Corkscrew, Excalibur, the family coaster Mad Mouse and a coaster just for kids — Mild Thing.

New in 2014 is the addition of a new family coaster, Northern Lights, and the development of Route 76, an all-new area that includes classic rides. The new Route 76 area will take guests back into amusement park Americana with the return of three Valleyfair classic rides that made their debut in 1976 when the Park opened.

Plus, Dinosaurs Alive!, Planet Snoopy, Soak City Waterpark and more all add up to the already full lineup at the 90-acre park, which is the largest amusement park in the upper Midwest.

tHE LAndinGStep back in time

History comes alive at The Landing—Minnesota River Heritage Park—in Shakopee. The idyllic wooded setting stretches along the scenic river valley and brings alive the charm and challenges of life in the 1800s. Families and history enthusiasts of all ages can step into this historic site, which features re-enactments of the rich diversity of early American life, from the early days of the fur trade era to a developing village—complete with its shops, homes, church, town hall and railroad depot. Check the website for special event days. The Landing is open weekends and select

holidays, usually mid-March through the end of December, and weekdays all year round. Tour groups may reserve by appointment. The Landing is part of Three Rivers Parks District.

cAntErburY PArKSaddle up for heart-racing, high-speed horse racing fun

Get ready for some of the most exciting horse racing in the country at Shakopee’s Canterbury Park. A fast season of live thoroughbred and quarter horse racing runs from May 16 through September 13. The track schedules post times that are generally Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, racing begins at 1:30 p.m. Even when the horses aren’t running at Canterbury, the racing continues. Thanks to 500 TVs, Canterbury’s Race Book is home to year-round simulcast

wagering from America’s top tracks.

Plus, horse racing is not the only entertainment option at Canterbury. The 18,000-square-foot Canterbury Card Casino features 50 tables with comfortable seating, full bar and menu with table service. A mix of different casino games are available 24 hours a day. Patrons can test their skills at the poker tables or by visiting the casino games room for conventional table games like blackjack. Experience an uncommon event truly like no other. Plan to attend the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. The country’s largest Renaissance-themed festival, this rousing event will delightfully engage and entertain you as the festival grounds are transformed into a 16th-century village, complete with hundreds of unique characters. You’re encouraged to dress the part, too!

On 16 lively stages you’ll find magicians, musicians, comedians, jugglers, mimes and more who entertain the kid in all of us. Plus, cheer on the jousting knights who mount their horses to do battle. And, as mentioned, festival-goers are encouraged to the dress the part as well as you stroll the village. Nearly 275 artisans display and sell their handcrafted treasures. Demonstrations are given daily by masters of historic skills such as armor making, bronze casting, glass blowing and calligraphy. And, of course, there’s food! Shakopee Derby Days

S h a k o p e e ’ s p o p u l a r , summer t ime communit y festival, Derby Days, occurs during the first full weekend in August each year. The 2014 dates are July 30 - Aug.

3. The festival features nearly 50 events over a span of five

days, including live music, a family fun park, Taste of Shakopee,

Have dinner and enjoy high-class entertainment from the nation’s largest professional dinner theater company.

Chanhassen Dinner Theatres in Chanhassen has been delighting audiences since 1968. CDT has been home

to world premiere productions and helped launch the careers of many actors and actresses, including Oscar-nominee Amy Adams. Its Playhouse Theatre was home to “I Do! I Do!” which ran a record 22 consecutive years with the original cast.

The dinner theater features shows on three stages: the main stage, Fireside Theatre and

sMsc 2014 WAciPiHeritage, culture celebratedat annual Powwow Aug. 15-17Every August, the artistry and skill of hundreds of Native American dancers take center stage at the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Wacipi (Powwow).

The three-day event brings together dancers in beautiful regalia and singers at the drum, performing the songs of their ancestors and celebrating the Dakota culture. Dancers from around the country compete in contests dances at the “Wacipi” (wah-chee-pee), which translates in the Dakota language to “they dance.”

Don’t miss the Grand Entry when hundreds of dancers enter the arena following Eagle feather staffs and flags to open each session. The Wacipi also features vendor crafts and traditional moccasin games.

Tundra Swans are seen here in the fall. Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets congregate to feed on fish. Bald Eagles can also be seen soaring overhead. And these are just a few examples of the wildlife and bird life that can be viewed at the 14,000-acre Refuge, a national wildlife area that is one of the premier areas for birding in Minnesota and is part of the National Audubon’s Minnesota River Valley Birding Trail. The Refuge, strung along 34 miles of the Minnesota River, is an important area for migrating birds.

In addition, the Refuge provides parklands and hiking trails for wildlife viewing and photography. It also provides a variety of volunteer guided bird hikes and nature walks on all of the Refuge Units. Near Shakopee specifically, you’ll find the Louisville Swamp Unit, which includes 13 miles of trails among this marshland that are great for hiking and cross-country skiing. The parking lot for this Unit is near the parking area for the Minnesota Renaissance Festival grounds, which are just south of Shakopee and just off Highway 169.

Minnesota Valley State Recreation Area

Welcome to the natural world. Here’s a scenic area with trails that are ideal for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, mountain biking and snowmobiling. Plus, it is located just minutes from Shakopee?

The state-managed Minnesota Valley State Recreation Area is just off Highway 169 near

Belle Plaine, and the multi-use Minnesota Valley Trail, which parallels the Minnesota River. The

section of trail from Shakopee to Chaska is paved and a natural-surface trail runs from Chaska to Belle Plaine. In spring, summer and fall, the park has 41 miles of hiking trails, six miles of surfaced bike trails, 29 miles of mountain bike trails and 29 miles of horse trails. In the winter, the park has five miles of ungroomed cross-country ski trails and 35 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Snowshoeing and dog sledding are also permitted. You can also camp in the park.

Archery Park and Boat Launch

The City of Shakopee provides a boat launch and the Shakopee Archery Park on County Road 101 just north of the Minnesota River. The Archery Park is a joint project with the Minne-sota Department of Nat-ural Resources, Min-nesota River Valley Chapter of the Min-nesota Deer Hunters Association and the City of Shakopee.

Three Rivers Park District

Still more outdoor adventures can be found in a number of other nearby parks and trails. Many of these parks and trails that visitors enjoy in the Shakopee area are a part of the Three Rivers Park District, which is a park system in the west suburban Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. The district manages nearly 27,000 acres of park reserves, regional parks, regional trails and special-use facilities. The name “Three Rivers” comes from the area’s geography, situated within the watersheds that flow into three significant rivers to this region: the Mississippi, the Minnesota and the Crow. With facilities for every season, including picnicking, swimming, play areas, boating, fishing, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, golfing, camping, and sledding, Three Rivers Parks is the place for recreation, play and relaxation. Several of the parks near Shakopee also offer camping options, such as Carver Park in Victoria, Cleary Lake Regional Park in Prior Lake, and Cedar Lake Farm Regional Park in New Prague (see Campground listing in this section). This stunningly beautiful 18-hole course has impressive credentials. snowmobiling. You’ll find more than 200 miles of snowmobile trails in Scott County. A local snowmobile club, the River Valley Trail Blazers, is active in helping to maintain those trails and also in providing a “Park and Ride” service for snowmobilers in the northwest corner of the Canterbury Park parking lot. The club also usually sponsors several snowmobile trips and weekly rides during the season.
