Dear All,

Welcome to the 17th Annual Ladies Varsity Golf Match at Rye Golf Club. We hope that you will have a great day following what looks to be a fantastic match, no matter the result.

This year, the Ladies’ Varsity Match returns to Rye Golf Club for the third time. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those who have been involved in making this match possible. Firstly, to Rye Golf Club and its members for hosting us at their beautiful course. Furthermore, we are grateful to those at the club who have helped to organise the match and for the time and effort they have put in to help make this match happen.

We are sure that the links will be an exciting and challenging test for all of us today.

Secondly, we would like to thank the Oxford and Cambridge Ladies Golfing Society for their support and guidance for both teams, under the leadership of Joan Weight. We are also very grateful for the support of the

Speed Trust whose generosity makes both this match and activities of the two golf teams possible.

Finally, our appreciation goes to those golf clubs who have participated in fierce but friendly matches and who have offered us their wonderful hospitality throughout our golfing season. It is an honour to have the

opportunity to play such fantastic courses. Only the kindness of these clubs and its members makes it possible.

The history of Rye Golf Club dates back to 1893, when it was decided that ‘a Golf Club should be formed; links to be situated over the Camber sandhills’. The 18 holes were designed in 1895 by HS Colt, the first

Club Captain. The Club prospered in the early years and became well known as one of the leading golf clubs in the south of England. 120 years later, Rye still maintains this position today.

Although the course has seen small modifications since then, much of Colt’s original plan persists: The current links play mostly back and forth along a series of ridges and across the sort of rippling, heaving

ground. The variety of its daunting green sites, which seem simple but are severe, is matched only by the strength and diversity of its extreme driving challenges, the tight fairways routed through shallow valleys,

along sandy crests or angled across the steep hills.

The special relationship between Rye and Oxford and Cambridge dates back to 1899, when the newly created Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society accepted an invitation to play their home matches at Rye.

The Varsity Match was first played at Rye in 1911. The Varsity Match returns to Rye every five years. Previous Ladies Varsity Matches have been won by Oxford (2004) and Cambridge (2009).

In his article about Rye, Darwin wrote: “The two great features of golf at Rye are the uniformly fiendish behaviour of the wind and the fascinating variety of stances”. He concludes that “Surely, there can nowhere

be anything appreciably better than the golf to be had at this truly divine spot”. We expect a tough, but beautiful challenge.

The Ladies at Oxford and Cambridge Universities are delighted to return to Rye for this year’s Varsity Match.
