There’s a lot to do in the Stevens Point area. Here’s a sample itinerary to help you decide what to do with your time in the center of Wisconsin.

When the weather’s fine, it is a great time to hit the trail. Bike or walk the 26-mile Green Circle Trail, which winds its way through the community, explore the Ice Age Trail or trek the 18-mile Tomorrow River State Trail.

If wildlife viewing is more your style, go birdwatching at the Buena Vista Grasslands or Schmeeckle Reserve.

If your idea of outdoor fun always involves water, you’ve come to the right place. You’ll find water access for fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking and swimming at great parks throughout the region, such as Jordan, Collins, Lake DuBay and Lake Emily parks, to name just a few. For more options, see page 15.

Like to golf? Play the Wisconsin River Golf Club, known for its picturesque course along the river, or try SentryWorld’s championship golf course, newly overhauled and ranked as one of Wisconsin’s top courses.

➤➤ Fantastic flavors. Big vats of beer. Trails to trek. Healthy fun for kids and grown-ups alike. There are a lot of options in the Stevens Point area. Choose the trip that’s right for you.

After a morning spent biking, hiking, fishing, boating, paddling, birdwatching or golfing, you’ll be ready to take a relaxing auto tour. Follow the Polish Heritage Trail, Highway 51 or the Yellowstone Trail. For a unique look at the area’s history, visit Heritage Park in Plover, the Beth Israel Synagogue and the Historic Fire House #2 in Stevens Point, and the Rising Star Mill in Nelsonville.

No auto tour of the Stevens Point area would be complete without a stop at one of the four breweries: Stevens Point Brewery, Central Waters Brewing Company, O’so Brewing Company and Kozy Yak Brewery. Stop at Great Northern Distilling for handcrafted spirits.

If beer and spirits aren’t your style, take a drive out to Amherst and learn about the Stevens Point area’s commitment to the environment at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association headquarters. Or, visit the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame in Stevens Point.

After dinner, stroll the Stevens Point Sculpture Park or downtown Stevens Point.

The Stevens Point area is located in 800-square- mile, mostly rural Portage County, which sits in the center of the state at the crossroads of the Wisconsin River Valley and the Central Sands Region. When Stevens Point was founded in 1858,the logging industry and trading posts defined the community. Today, the city is home to head-quarters for such companies as Delta Dental, Sentry Insurance, Travel Guard and Herrschners.

Established in 1894, the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point has been a cornerstone of the community. The 400-acre campus includes the Schmeeckle Reserve, Wisconsin ConservationHall of Fame, Museum of Natural History, Carlsten Art Gallery and planetarium.

The Village of Plover, located at the crossroads of I-39 and Highway B, is the most populated village in Portage County. It is home to a variety of retailers and industries, 19 parks and the Korean War Memorial of Wisconsin at Lake Pacawa.

The Town of Plover is a great place to live, offering peaceful surroundings just minutes from shopping, dining and other businesses.

On the banks of the Tomorrow River, you’ll find the Village of Amherst, a quiet but thriving community with a very strong sense of place. Amherst is home to the Tomorrow River State Trail, Lettie Jensen Theater and Central Waters Brewing Company.

The countryside is dotted with small communities like Junction City, Almond, Rosholt, Nelsonville, Park Ridge, Whiting and Amherst Junction. The rural Lake DuBay area in northwestern Portage County offers many recreational opportunities and encompasses most of the townships of Eau Pleine, Hull and Dewey.

ADVENTURES ON THE TRAIL

HikingStart your journey at the Schmeeckle Reserve, the trailhead for the Green Circle Trail. The 26-mile trail is divided into 12 segments, which circle the City of Stevens Point along a continuous paved and gravel trail. Multiple access points make the trail easy to reach. More than 80 percent of the Green Circle winds through secluded natural areas. The trail includes a new half-mile boardwalk near the Schmeeckle Reserve. Connecting trails link the Green Circle Trail to the Stevens Point SculpturePark and the Tomorrow River State Trail, an 18-mile trail developed on an abandoned railroad grade. Hiking is also available at the George W. Mead State Wildlife Area, Ice Age Trail, HartmanCreek State Park, Jordan Park, Lake Emily Park and Standing Rocks Park.

BikingEnjoy the scenic rural landscape surroundingSunset Lake in the northeastern corner of Portage County, near the Central Wisconsin Environmental Station. The country roads surrounding Sunset Lake are lightly traveled and offer a wide variety of terrain, and the sandy beach at Sunset Lake Park is the perfect place for a picnic or swim. Standing Rocks Park offers an assortment of mountain bike trails, including beginner and single-track trails. The trails wind through the wooded park and are open daily from May 1–Nov. 16 (trail fee required). Biking is also available on rural routes throughout the Stevens Point area as well as the Ice Age Bicycle
