DearCareerMentors,
Thankyouforcontributingtoanothersuccessfulsession forthe
CareerMentorProgram(CMP)! Aftersuchalongwinter,we
areveryhappytobestartingourspringandsummerbreak. The
CMPwillresumeinSeptember2014. The2013/14yearwasa
busyoneatCareerServicesandtheUniversityofManitoba. The
campusisnowhometoanewfootballstadiumandmany
newconstructionprojectsareunderway. InMarchthe
Career
Mentor
Program,
as
part
of
Career
Services,
welcomed
a
newdirector,GailLanglais. Gailbringstohernewroleover20years
experienceinthefieldofcareerdevelopmentworkingwithabroad
rangeofclientgroups. Shesheldpositionswiththeprovincial
governmentandvarioussocialservicesagencies. Withthecreationof
thisposition,CareerServiceswillincreasepartnershipsandbroadenoursupporttostudentstomaximize
theiracademicexperienceandconnectionstomeaningfulworklifeexperiences.
Thispastyear,theCMPassistedmorethan250students. Themostexploredoccupationswere:Occupationa
Therapist,RespiratoryTherapist,PhysicianandPsychologist. Theprogramalsowelcomed67newmentor
participantsinHealthCare,SocialServices,BusinessandtheEnvironmentalSector. Inadditiontoyour
amazingsupport,
the
program
could
not
have
succeeded
this
year
without
CMP
Assistant/student
coordinator,KhrystynaLazar. KhrystynaiscompletingaB.A.inPsychologyattheUniversityofManitoba;she
joinedtheCareerServicesteaminSeptember. Herfriendlydispositionandformer
programparticipationmadeherawonderfulassettotheprogramandahelpfulguideforstudents.
Morethananything,wewanttothankyouforyourcontributionsandletyou
knowhowmuchwevalueyourparticipation. Thankyouforsharingyourtime,
expertiseandpersonalexperienceswithstudents.
Theimpactyouvemadeisimmeasurable!

answeringmyquestionsaswellasprovidingmewithinformationIwasunawareof.
MentorComment:Ithinkthatthisisthemost
worthwhileundertaking,
as
it
providesstudentswithaninsightintoacareerthattheyarecontemplatingbysomeonewhohasreallifeexperienceinthatvocation.Therearealwaysaspectofajobthatarenotevidentuntilyouareactuallyinthepositionthingsthatmayimpactyourabilitytoperform i.e.tighttimelines,longhours,travel,public/political/mediapressureetc.Byspeakingtosomeonewhohasexperiencedthe
jobas
awhole,
the
student
can
gainamorebalancedperspective,whichwill(hopefully)aidtheminselectingtherightcareerchoice.
MaureenPenkohasbeenaUofMCareerMentorsince1995,assistingstudentsin
theirdiscoveryofSpeechLanguagePathology(SLP)andintheirpursuitofsuccess
intheprofession. Shecontinuestomeetwithstudentseachyearandenjoysthe
opportunitytoprovideameaningfulconnection.
DuringMaureens
experience
as
auniversity
student,
she
loved
language,
psychologyandsciences. ShefellintotheSLPoccupationandhaslovedit
everysingleminute. Throughouthercareershesalwaysfeltlikeshehasmadeadifference. Forthepast9
years,MaureenhasworkedwiththePembinaTrailsSchoolDivision,andpriortothatprovided20yearsof
serviceattheWinnipegHealthSciencesCentre. Inthesesettings,aswellasinherprivatepractice,sheloves
thediversityandcreativityofthishelpingprofession. AsanSLP,shehelpsindividualsopendoorsfor
themselves:Ifyoudonothavethepowerofcommunication,itinfluencesyoureverydaybeing,career,
sociallifeandyourabilitytolearncouldbeimpeded. Highlightingthefullscopeoftheprofessionisalsoa
partofhermentorshiptostudents,SLPsdealwithassessment,preventionand intervention,ofavarietyof
speechandlanguageimpairmentsfrompreschoolerstogeriatrics.Wecanworkinavarietyofsettingsand
arean
integral
part
of
amedical,
educational
or
research
team.
Aleaderinherfield,MaureenreceivedtheEveKassirerAwardforOutstandingProfessionalAchievement
lastyearfromtheCanadianAssociationofSpeechLanguagePathologistsandAudiologists.
