Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Mandi Balduf will begin her seventh season as Head Softball Coach at

Chowan University. Under her direction the Hawks have posted three consecutive

thirty win seasons (2008-2011), claimed four CIAA Northern Division Champion-

ships, two CIAA Tournament Championships, and have made two appearances to

the NCAA DII Atlantic Regional.

The 2013 season saw four Hawks honored as part of the CIAA All-

Rookie, All-CIAA Second Team or CIAA First Team, three to the All-Tournament

Team (Alora Lincoln, Amber Matthews, and Leigh Ward), and two NFCA All-

Atlantic Region selections (Liz Hipple and Leigh Ward). Chowan also claimed the

CIAA Highest GPA Award for earning the top GPA among CIAA softball teams.

In 2012, the Hawks were regular season CIAA Champions for a

3rd time and advanced to the CIAA title game. Balduf produced four All-CIAA

First Team players, including 2012 NFCA All Region second team member Liz

Hipple.

In 2011 Balduf recieved two distinctive awards from the National Fast-

pitch Coaches Association. During the 2011 season Balduf picked up her 100th win

and was awarded into the NFCA Victory Club. Coach Balduf also recieved recog-

nition for garnering the 7th ranked overall team GPA in all of NCAA DII Softball.

That year the Hawks Softball team boosted a 3.543 overall team GPA.

In Chowan’s first season playing in the CIAA (2010), Balduf guided her

program to a CIAA West Division Championship, a CIAA Championship,

and NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament appearance. The squad was perfect in

CIAA play at 18-0 in 2010.

In 2009, she led the Hawks to a 30-23 overall record. She coached four

players to All-CIAA honors, while also producing four NCCAA All-South Region

Players, and one NCCAA All American. The Chowan softball team also was

named the CIAA's Highest Team GPA for their respective sport that sea-

son. Balduf was named the National Christian College Athletic Association's South

Region Softball Coach of the Year. She guided her team to a 2009 NCCAA South

Region Championship, the program's second title since 2005.

Balduf kicked off her first season as head coach in 2008, compiling a 22-

30 overall record. The Hawks also proved they could excel in the classroom. The

National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced Chowan University as

the 10th ranked All-Academic Team in all NCAA DII softball after completing the

season with a 3.380 team grade point average.

Balduf has been an assistant at several successful programs, most notably

at Tiffin University. She was hired by Tiffin University in August of 2004 where

she helped the Dragons to three consecutive American Mideast Conference North

Titles and two consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances. In 2006 the

Dragons posted a 57-11 record and won the Region IX Championship of the NAIA

tournament. Along with her coaching duties at Tiffin, Balduf also served as a

Graduate Admissions Representative and worked to receive her M.B.A.

Prior to being hired at Tiffin, Balduf served as a graduate assistant soft-

ball coach for the University of South Dakota, where she worked to earn graduate

hours in Athletic Administration. Balduf spent one season at USD where she

helped manage all aspects of the on the field coaching under the direction of the

head coach.

Balduf graduated from Tiffin University in 2002 with a B.A. in Sport Manage-

ment. At Tiffin, she was a four-year starter for the softball team and helped the

Dragons to a 2002 AMC Conference Championship. She was a two-time NAIA

Academic All-American.

After graduation from Tiffin, Balduf moved to Kentucky where she

worked as a volunteer in the AmeriCorp: Athletes in Service program. She spent

over 1,700 hours working with the inner-city youth of Lexington while also volun-

teering as an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky.

Balduf is a native of Curtice, Ohio. Balduf is an active member of the

NFCA and works camps across the country. She serves as a point of contact with

the NCAA/Champs Life Skills program at Chowan.

an extensive playing and coaching career.

In his second season with the team, De Witt

guided sophomore pitcher Alora Lincoln to a

15-12 record on the mound. Lincoln was un-

Chowan University stands in the

old Albemarle region of North

Carolina between the Roanoke and

Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner

of the state. The Murfreesboro area

was first settled during the sixteenth

and seventeenth centuries, when the

principal inhabitants were several

Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes.

Today, the stately old homes seem to

whisper of the storied colonial and

antebellum days.

Murfreesboro is located approximately

60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120

miles from Raleigh, North Carolina.

Murfreesboro is the location of the

boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed,

discoverer of the cure for yellow fever,

and home to Richard Jordan Gatling,

the inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours

and special events are offered

throughout the year by local groups.
