My Brothers ldquoNo general can fight his battles alone He must depend upon his lieutenants and his success depends upon his ability to select the right man for the right placerdquo Philip Armour A year ago in the newsletter we announced our plans for the lsquoMaking A Differencersquo fundraising campaign in order to address a critical sustainability issue of our own financial reserves That planning continues as we sign on our various Chapter Captains (aka our Lieutenants) and solicit Key Donors as we approach our official launch date in early 2015 To date we have raised 35 of our planned goal amount of $750000 I have received questions from some Brothers as to why we need to raise money when our total assets exceed $2M The answer is simple the majority of fund-ing required for our leadership programs and many scholarships offered comes out of the SCCF reserves while the majority of donations received are earmarked for specific Chapter accounts to help with their housing needs mdash that is not a sustainable long term financial model Speaking of our scholarship programs we received a great letter from one of the parents of a Brother who received a Leadership scholarship ldquoI want to thank you for your support of our son this year My husband and I were a bit perplexed when our son joined Sigma Chi but it has been a great experience for him and he is so proud of his Fraternity Our son is taking on quite a challenge in his studies and your faith in him is appreciated more than in the monetary help the scholarship provides Keep up your good workrdquo At the Sigma Chi Canadian Foundation (SCCF) all the work is performed by volunteers (also our lieutenants) who continue their work to solicit financial resources provide faithful stewardship of our funds and engage in exemplary practices in support of strengthening Sigma Chi in Canada As shown earlier our leadership programs awards and scholarships are making a difference in the lives of undergrad brothers across the country and I would like to personally thank each and every one of our donors listed within who have made that possible More importantly I look forward to that continued support for our new campaign once officially launched I would like to specifically thank the continued volunteer leadership provided by my lieutenants Brothers David MacNicol David Lucescu John Ricketts John Akitt Jeff Lee Lionel Colman Doug Towers Doug McWhirter and the rest of the Board

On Saturday January 25 2014 Sigma Chi Brothers from across Canada and the United States of America competed in the 2014 Sigma Chi ndash Ice Hockey Tournament at the Powerade Centre in Brampton Ontario while raising thousands for the Sigma Chi Canadian Foundation (SCCF) and other undergraduate causes

The Sigma Chi ndash Toronto Alumni Chapter led by Brother Shawn Boyd WINDSOR 1994 organized this yearrsquos amazing tournament Team Highcourt Harriers (ldquoTeam Flagrdquo) won the 2014 Tournament by a score of 4 - 2 and taking home the 2014 Connable Cup

As I intend to become a university professor academic scholarships are a key element to my future as a scholar I am therefore very grateful that my first post-graduate scholarship comes from my Fraternity which I already owe

so much to Thank you to every brother that made this opportunity possible by contributing to the Sigma Chi Canadian Foundation (SCCF)

My studies are doing great I will be working on police corruption and perceptions of democracy in poor urban neighbour-hoods in the Dominican Republic for my Masters and am planning to apply in the USA for my PhD Thank you again for this scholarship it is much appreciated and will be well used

lsquoMaking a DifferencersquoFUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN UPDATE

The Delta Omicron Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity continues

to enjoy growth and organizational success out on the west coast

After a very successful Fall 2014 rush program the chapter pledged

34 young men mdash tied for the highest bid acceptance rate in the

UBC Greek System Over the summer the chapter was awarded its

thirteenth Peterson Significant Chapter Award

The chapter saw success with its Fall 2014 Derby Days program in

support of the UBC Shinerama campaign in which Sigma Chi UBC is

a title sponsor In addition over the course of the year the chapter

took first place in both Delta Gammarsquos ldquoAnchorsplashrdquo for the third

year running and Gamma Phi Betarsquos ldquoGammiesrdquo film festival

Currently the chapter is preparing for its Fall 2014 Initiation

Sweetheart Ball in February 2015 and fundraising efforts to

support the David Huynh Memorial Scholarship in support of

our late Brother Huynh

Your Sigma Chi Canadian Foundation (SCCF) is embarking on an exciting fundraising campaign to raise $750000 over

5 years We are fortunate to have a committed group of engaged dedicated individuals working diligently behind the scenes on various initiatives during this our silent phase of the campaign as we prepare to launch in the New Year

The Fierheller Award challenges each Chapter to commit to the International Fraternityrsquos Core Value of Learning

The Gamma Lambda Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity at McGill University is the winner of the 2014 Fierheller Award for having the highest Chapter GPA of 80 and for the second consecutive year

The Lambda Theta Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity at the University of Ottawa is honoured for having the most improved Chapter GPA from 70 to 74
