A Special Wish Foundation – Dayton Chapter (ASW), the Dayton region’s only wish-granting organization, has been there for decades for local children, like Gavin, who are battling a life-threatening illness. 2014

was a fantastic year for the organization. We celebrated our 30th year at Bill’s Donut Shop (where it all began) and finished the year meeting our goal of raising $150,000 and granting over 30 special wishes. We had an unprecedented number of events held on our behalf and another year of making special wishes come true for children in the Dayton region. As we begin the next 30 years, we remain grateful to our many individual donors, businesses and organizations who have supported ASW. Through individual donations, employee giving and ASW and other fundraisers we are able to grant each and every child who is eligible his or her very Special Wish. We would like to extend a very special thank you to the many organizations who organize events on our behalf, further extending the reach of ASW with their efforts. To keep our overhead low so donations go directly toward the granting of wishes, ASW relies on outside groups to assist in fundraising. You will see a listing of these organizations and business on page 8. If you are interested in organizing a similar event, please contact us. ASW is thankful for the many years of support of Dayton Children’s Hospital. Our partnership has provided the best possible connection to our wish kids and their families and has enabled us to be able to fulfill our mission daily. We have compiled for you in this 2014 Report to the Community the donors who were able to give in excess of $250. That does not diminish in any way the donors who give what they can year over year, volunteer their time and represent the lifeblood of this organization. We absolutely could not achieve our mission without the support of each and every donor and we are consistently inspired by their generosity. We hope you enjoy reading this report and learning more about our organization. Your help is needed to continue to make special wishes come true for local children, like Gavin. Please visit www.aspecialwish.org to find out how you can be part of something special. Together… we will continue to make a child’s very Special Wish come true!!!

‘‘I’m having trouble putting into words how much this means to me. Everyone was so nice. I will remember this for the rest of my

life. Thank you so, so, so much.’’ - Gavin, Wish Child

A Special Wish Foundation – Dayton Chapter granted the wish of eight year-old Tyler from Fairborn, diagnosed with critical valvular aortic stenosis, a disease which decreases blood flow from the heart which

can cause a myriad of symptoms. His Special Wish was to go on a dinosaur dig in South Dakota, work with a paleontologist and to take home a fossil. When Tyler found out his Special Wish was granted, he nearly fell out of his chair, according to his mother. Tyler and his family boarded an airplane on an early morning last June. By lunch they were in Rapid City, South Dakota and off to the Badlands to dig for dinosaurs! The heat and rugged terrain didn’t hold Tyler back. He met up with Walter Stein, his guide on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, and they headed to the quarry where Tyler learned how to properly excavate fossils. Then, Tyler and his family went to the lab to learn to prep the fossil. He was even able to bring a fossil home

with him! The family enjoyed a horseback ride near Mount Rushmore, as well, and built many wonderful memories to share. Tyler’s excitement during the entire trip was written all over his face. These pictures really do speak a thousand words. This trip represented the fulfillment of a life-long dream for Tyler and was made possible by the generosity of Vigor Crossfit in Moraine. They held a workout competition

of 73 two-person teams and the proceeds went directly to sponsor Tyler’s Special Wish. They raised enough that day to also sponsor a second Special Wish: Zachariah’s trip to Walt Disney World. Tyler is one of over 1,600 children and adolescents with a life-threatening disorder that have benefited from ASW in the Dayton region. Each year, ASW is honored to provide families the opportunity to reconnect away from doctor visits, hospital stays, and to make precious memories together as a family.

The Wolfes, Bob and Bea, have been long-time volunteers for ASW, only recently “retiring” from their role as the official

Special Wish Airport Team (SWAT) couple. For many years, Bob and Bea faced early morning hours, inclement weather and the airport rush to represent ASW at the Dayton International Airport. With smiles and good cheer, they greeted wish families at the airport to help see them on their way to wherever their dreams took them. Bob and Bea have been a mainstay of ASW and theirs will be big shoes to fill. Thank you Bob and Bea Wolfe, for your many years of service and for having such an impact on so many wish families!

Sharon Elaine Photography is a portrait studio in historic downtown Tipp City, but as evidenced by the many ASW events where

she donates her time, she does go on location, as well. Sharon has been a constant at A Special Wish events since 2007. Year after year she gives her time and talents to enhance events like the Holiday Open House and the Valentines Dance. Her consistent generosity and passion for sharing her talents freely are so appreciated by ASW and wish families, alike. Although Sharon has shared many experiences and memories here at ASW, her particular favorite is seeing the children bring their letters to Santa Claus at her favorite event, the Annual Holiday Open House. Families have told her that their family picture from that even is their favorite. “It’s one thing to do something you love for a living, but another to be able to share it freely for a good cause,” says Sharon. ASW is so grateful for Sharon for capturing so many important moments and for sharing her talents with our wish families and at our special events!

R iver Valley Credit Union (RVCU) is one of those generous organizations that often the community never hears about. The employees of RVCU have been quietly giving

to ASW every single month since 1997, donating over $75,000 during that time. Their mission is to enhance the well-being of their members and it is easy to see that their mission spills over into the community. What started as a simple way for employees to give has turned into quite a fundraiser benefitting ASW. Employees get a free dress day every week for an automatic deduction from each paycheck. RVCU then matches those gifts and designates a monthly donation to ASW. RVCU has eight branches between Huber Heights and Middletown and with a recent merger, nearly doubled their staff. As such, ASW has seen in increase in that monthly donation year over year matching the growth of RVCU. Having granted the equivalent of 20 wishes in almost 20 years, the employees of RVCU have made a huge impact on the lives of wish families. ASW is honored to be recipient of their generosity and to use those funds to grant special wishes. Thank you, River Valley Credit Union!

How A Special Wish Foundation Grants A Special Wish

A Special Wish Foundation (ASW) is often asked about the process in granting a child’s wish. Below is a brief outline of the process. It is important to note that the staff and Board of Directors of A Special Wish Foundation do not make any determination of a child’s eligibility. The child’s primary care specialist certifies if the child’s condition is deemed life-threatening.

• The wish process begins with a referral to the organization, made by a family member, friend, doctor, nurse, social worker, etc.

• Once received, ASW will contact the child’s parent(s)/guardian(s) for signed approval to move forward with the referral.

• When ASW receives this approval, the child’s primary care specialist is then contacted to certify the child’s diagnosis is considered life threatening.

• If the primary care specialist certifies the child’s diagnosis as life threatening, additional paperwork must then be completed by the parent(s)/guardian(s). This is the step where the child will be asked to list three wishes for consideration.

• Once the final paperwork is completed, the child’s paperwork is reviewed by the Board of Directors during their monthly meeting. The wish request is either approved or denied. While ASW strives to grant the child’s top wish, the wish must meet certain requirements, including being age appropriate and taking place within the continental United States. If the wish does not meet ASW policies, or at times due to circumstances outside the control of ASW, the child’s second or third choice may be considered.

• If the child’s wish is approved, the parent(s)/guardian(s) are contacted by ASW and the planning process begins.

• ASW works closely with the family to determine when the wish will be granted, with regards to their preference, as well as availability of accommodations and schedules of third parties involved. The goal of ASW is to ensure the child’s wish is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Celebrating 30 years of Granting Wishes

O n January 5, 1984, in a booth inside of Bill’s Donut Shop, David Lantz, founder of A Special Wish Foundation – Dayton Chapter (ASW), and Faye and Bill Elam, owners of Bill’s Donut Shop, came together to grant

the first wish for the chapter. A young boy named Bryan, who was battling cancer, wanted to visit Walt Disney World and thanks to A Special Wish Foundation, his wish came true. The partnership with ASW, Bill’s Donut Shop and their loyal customers remains strong and allows ASW to continue to fulfill their mission. 2014 marked the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Chapter of A Special Wish Foundation. Since then, ASW has granted more than 1,600 special wishes and it was fitting to celebrate this special anniversary back where it all started. An anniversary celebration was held at Bill’s Donut Shop last winter to kick-off the 30/30 Campaign. This campaign was created to send 30 kids on his or her Special Wish by raising $150,000. Thanks to the generosity of the community, this goal was attained and we had another successful year of granting the wishes of local children battling life-threatening disorders.
