Auto Terminology Inthismonth’s“CarChatter”article,CharlieDemmyexploresthevaryingterminologyappliedtocommonautomotivefeatures.ThenameusedtodescribeaparticularpartorrelateditemdependsonwhichsideoftheAtlanticOceanyouhappentobelocated.TousintheStates,theBritishseemtohavecomeupwithsomeodddescriptions,butsurelytheBritswouldarguethesameaboutourinterpretations.Theuseof“boot”,“bonnet”and“wing”arequiteforeigntous.SeeCharlie’sstoryonPage4.q

SusquehannaRegion’sfinalrallycrossbeganonasoggynote.Thegrassycoursewasslipperyforthestart,butimprovedthroughtheday.ThisfinaleventwasheldSaturday,October11ontheFarmShow’sElmertonAvenuelotwhere24driversbravedthevaryingconditions.Thosewhoparticipateddeterminedtheseriespointsstandingsforsomeclasses.There’smoreontheeventandaserieswrap-upinthisnewsletter. Fortheautocrossers,the2014seasonwillendthisweekendwithEvents#12
atHersheyonOctober25&26.SeriesclasschampionshipsandthePAXawardarestillupforgrabs.Thisweekendwilldeterminewhowillreceiveyear-endtrophiesfortheirefforts. Followingthisweekend’sautocrosses,therewillbealullinregionactivity.ThenextscheduledeventistheJanuary17,2015Year-endAwardsBanquetattheGrantvilleHolidayInn.Memberswillbenotifiedwhenbanquetregistrationinformationbecomesavailable. ComeouttoGilligansforthemembershipmeetingonTuesday,October28th.Themeet-ingwillbeginat7:30pm,butcomeearlierforagoodmeal.Nominationsfor2015officerswillbeacceptedatthismeetingandwillagainbeentertainedattheNovember25thmeetingwherenominationswillbeclosedandelectionsheldimmediatelythereafter. TreasurerAlanLesherreportedontheclubfinances.Thetreasuryremainsingoodshapebutthebalancedeclinedabitduetoprepaymentoftheexpensesoffutureevents.SteveLimbertpointedoutthattheby-lawsrequirethatthetreasurer’srecordsbeauditedannuallyandthatweshouldconsideranauditofthoserecordsthisyear. SteveLimbertreportedthatregionmembershipdeclinedfrom340to333thismonth. MarkusHouserreportedthatourwebsiteisworkingwellandthatallresultshavebeenposted.
ThereweretworeportsthatdifficultywasexperiencedinreadingthefilecopyofThe Squeal.Thosereportingtheproblemsaidtheywilltryreadingthecopythatispostedtoourwebsitetoseeifthatsolvestheirproblem. GeoffCraigreportedthatJeremyUtterbackwasleavingtheareasowewillneedsomeonetoassumetheresponsibilityforrunningregistrationatourautocrossevents.Geoffalsosuggestedthatwemaywanttoconsiderrunningfewereventsinthefutureandwemaywanttoconsiderrunningourseriesinconjunctionwithotherclubs.Adiscussionfollowedaboutthepossibleuseofthe

AfterasuccessfulrallycrossontheFarmShow’sgrassparkinglotonElmertonAvenuelastyear,theregionscheduledfourrallycrosseventsfor2014.UnderthecapablemanagementofJohnRoscinskiandAdamMoore,allfoureventscomeoffnicely.Theattendance,whilenotlargeincomparisontoourautocrossevents,comparedfavorablywiththeattendanceattherallycrosseventsheldbyotherregionsinthenortheastdivision. Ourfirstrallycrossthisyearexperiencedadampmorningwithsunintheafternoonandofferedareasonablecourseforour24entrants.Oursecondeventranonadrysurfaceanddevelopedbillowingcloudsofdust.Thiscausedmanyofour22participantstobreakouttheirdustmasks,whichseemtobestandardequipmentinmanyoftheirtoolboxes.Forourthirdeventwepreparedtocombatthedustbyarrangingforawaterwagontoappearoverthenoonhour.Howeverthewaterwagonandtractorremainedparkedjust700feetfromourlotandneverappearedtherebecausetheFarmShowstaffwasoverwhelmedbythecrowdattheMecumCollectorCarAuctionthatwasalsoheldoverthatweekend.But,asitturnedout,

rainearlierintheweekandsomeadjustmentstothetracktoreachdryergroundmadeanacceptabletrackthatgave20runstoour19entrantsthatday.Becausethelasteventwouldbeheldinthefall,afterthesummerdryseason,wedecidednottocontractforthewaterwagonandweturnedouttoberight. Rallycross#4,heldonSaturday,October11,mayhavebeenthebestofthebunch,closingoursuccessfulrallycrossseasonwithanicecourseand23entries.Thecoursewasabitmoreopenthanbefore.Theuseofthefieldwasreconfiguredinawaythatallowedthecoursetorunalongbothsidesofthestartline,whileinthepast,thecoursewasonlylocatedononesideortheotherofthestart.Theresultwasacoursethatmayhavebeensomewhatlikearoadcourse. Theweatherwasalsointeresting,abitofrainearlierintheweekandrainthenightbeforewithadrizzleinthebeginningofthemorningturningintoamistlatemorningandastrongsunappearingaboutnoonchangedthecharacterofthetrack.Theresultwasaslipperymuddytrackinthemorningthatdriedoutover

Thelongercourseandthechangesinweatherhadaninterestingeffectoncompetitiontimes.Themostunusualeffectoccurredinthemorning.Thebesttimesformostcarsinthemorningweretheirfirstrun.Thentheygotslowerasthemorningprogressedandinmostcasestheirslowestrunofthemorningwastheirsixthorseventhrunbecauseduringthemorningthemudgotdeeperandslicker.Thenthesuncameoutandalunchbreakwascalled.Intheafternoonthecourserevertedtostandardbehavior.Thefirsttimesweretheslowestandthelasttimeswerethefastestbecauseofthehardeninganddryingofthesurface. Thefinaleventinthe2104MiddleAtlanticRoadRacingSeries,akaMARRS,washostedbytheWashingtonD.C.Region,SCCA,atSummitPointtrackonOctober4and5,2014.Raceconditionswerecoolanddrywithsomeovernightrain.However,thetrackdriedquicklyduetolittlecloudcover.TheformatwastypicalforaMARRSweekend.TherewerequalifyingsessionsSaturdaymorningfollowedbyqualifyingracesforeachgroup. Sundayincludedtwobriefhardshippracticesessionsat8:30am.ThemainMARRSpointsracesfollowedfornineracegroups.Therewasavariationtothenormalschedule.TheopenwheelandprototypeshadabonusracejustafterthelunchbreakonSunday.Asyouwillsee,oneofourregionmembersbenefitedfromthis. SixdriverfromtheSusquehannaregiontookpartinMARRS9.Theywere:GeorgeHoutzinaformulacontinentalVanDieman,ChuckBuczeskieinanimprovedtouring/SDatsun240Z,AlanLesherdrivingaTouring/4DodgeNeon,RyanHeishman,GaryShenkandJimRobertsinMazdaMiatas. HeishmanstartedwellanddrovewellintheSpecMiataracebuthadlateraceissueswhichcausedhimtofinish18thoverall,andafewlapsdown.HedidnotreturntocompetitiononSunday.ShenkandRobertsdidcompleteboththequalifyingandpointsracesintheShowroomStockMiataclass.ThesecarsaremorerestrictedthanSpecMiata;but,youwouldn’tknowthatbythelaptimesandthefiercecompetition. Garyfinished6thonSaturdayandfellbackto16onSunday.Jimhadthingstheotherwayaround,finishing23rdonSaturdayandmovingupto18thintheSundayrace.BothSpecand

BuczeskieandLesherwereinthesameracegroup,#8.TheDatsunZcaristhehistoricalweaponofchoiceinITSatSummitPoint.Therewereabunchofthemontrackplusa#$^%*!fastAcura.Chuckhadhishandsfullwithalltheotherhotshoesandlate-in-the-racelappedtraffic.Afterthedustsettled,hehadapairof4thplacefinishes.Lesherhadaneasiertimeinbothracesexceptfortheoff-trackinthequalifyingrace.TherehadbeenanextendedtimeoutbeforeSaturday’srace#8inordertorepairthetirewallbetweenturns4and5,knownasTheChute.Abouthalfwaythruthequalifier,Lesherdecidedtogooutthereandpersonallyinspecttherepairtoinsurethattheworkershaddonetheirjobscorrectly.Theyhad.And,theNeonbouncedbackintocompetitionattheendofthepack,thusgivingMr.Leshertheopportunityre-passthesamecarsalloveragain.Theresultswere2winsintheT4classagainstlightcompetition.But,awinisawin.
