2014 RallyCross Series A Success Gein’ down and dirty. Susquehanna Region’s first effort at hosting a full RallyCross series proved a huge success. The core workers and course designers did a fantastic job organizing and executing the events. Participants were treated to a variety of course designs and the weather assured different track conditions for each event. The Farm Show’s Elmerton lot is a great fit. All in all, a very productive and entertaining RallyCross season. The name used to describe a particular part or related item depends on which side of the Atlantic Ocean you happen to be located. To us in the States, the British seem to have come up with some odd descriptions, but surely the Brits would argue the same about our interpretations. The use of “boot”, “bonnet” and “wing” are quite foreign to us. See Charlie’s story on Page 4. q A British citizen would describe this Austin Healy as having its bonnet raised and the hood lowered. SusquehannaRegion’sfinalrallycrossbeganonasoggynote.Thegrassycoursewasslipperyforthestart,butimprovedthroughtheday.ThisfinaleventwasheldSaturday,October11ontheFarmShow’sElmertonAvenuelotwhere24driversbravedthevaryingconditions.Thosewhoparticipateddeterminedtheseriespointsstandingsforsomeclasses.There’smoreontheeventandaserieswrap-upinthisnewsletter. Fortheautocrossers,the2014seasonwillendthisweekendwithEvents#12
atHersheyonOctober25&26.SeriesclasschampionshipsandthePAXawardarestillupforgrabs.Thisweekendwilldeterminewhowillreceiveyear-endtrophiesfortheirefforts. Followingthisweekend’sautocrosses,therewillbealullinregionactivity.ThenextscheduledeventistheJanuary17,2015Year-endAwardsBanquetattheGrantvilleHolidayInn.Memberswillbenotifiedwhenbanquetregistrationinformationbecomesavailable. ComeouttoGilligansforthemembershipmeetingonTuesday,October28th.Themeet-ingwillbeginat7:30pm,butcomeearlierforagoodmeal.Nominationsfor2015officerswillbeacceptedatthismeetingandwillagainbeentertainedattheNovember25thmeetingwherenominationswillbeclosedandelectionsheldimmediatelythereafter. TreasurerAlanLesherreportedontheclubfinances.Thetreasuryremainsingoodshapebutthebalancedeclinedabitduetoprepaymentoftheexpensesoffutureevents.SteveLimbertpointedoutthattheby-lawsrequirethatthetreasurer’srecordsbeauditedannuallyandthatweshouldconsideranauditofthoserecordsthisyear. SteveLimbertreportedthatregionmembershipdeclinedfrom340to333thismonth. MarkusHouserreportedthatourwebsiteisworkingwellandthatallresultshavebeenposted.
ThereweretworeportsthatdifficultywasexperiencedinreadingthefilecopyofThe Squeal.Thosereportingtheproblemsaidtheywilltryreadingthecopythatispostedtoourwebsitetoseeifthatsolvestheirproblem. AfterasuccessfulrallycrossontheFarmShow’sgrassparkinglotonElmertonAvenuelastyear,theregionscheduledfourrallycrosseventsfor2014.UnderthecapablemanagementofJohnRoscinskiandAdamMoore,allfoureventscomeoffnicely.Theattendance,whilenotlargeincomparisontoourautocrossevents,comparedfavorablywiththeattendanceattherallycrosseventsheldbyotherregionsinthenortheastdivision. Ourfirstrallycrossthisyearexperiencedadampmorningwithsunintheafternoonandofferedareasonablecourseforour24entrants.Oursecondeventranonadrysurfaceanddevelopedbillowingcloudsofdust.Thiscausedmanyofour22participantstobreakouttheirdustmasks,whichseemtobestandardequipmentinmanyoftheirtoolboxes.Forourthirdeventwepreparedtocombatthedustbyarrangingforawaterwagontoappearoverthenoonhour.Howeverthewaterwagonandtractorremainedparkedjust700feetfromourlotandneverappearedtherebecausetheFarmShowstaffwasoverwhelmedbythecrowdattheMecumCollectorCarAuctionthatwasalsoheldoverthatweekend.But,asitturnedout,

rainearlierintheweekandsomeadjustmentstothetracktoreachdryergroundmadeanacceptabletrackthatgave20runstoour19entrantsthatday.Becausethelasteventwouldbeheldinthefall,afterthesummerdryseason,wedecidednottocontractforthewaterwagonandweturnedouttoberight. Rallycross#4,heldonSaturday,October11,mayhavebeenthebestofthebunch,closingoursuccessfulrallycrossseasonwithanicecourseand23entries.Thecoursewasabitmoreopenthanbefore.Theuseofthefieldwasreconfiguredinawaythatallowedthecoursetorunalongbothsidesofthestartline,whileinthepast,thecoursewasonlylocatedononesideortheotherofthestart.Theresultwasacoursethatmayhavebeensomewhatlikearoadcourse. Theweatherwasalsointeresting,abitofrainearlierintheweekandrainthenightbeforewithadrizzleinthebeginningofthemorningturningintoamistlatemorningandastrongsunappearingaboutnoonchangedthecharacterofthetrack.Theresultwasaslipperymuddytrackinthemorningthatdriedoutover

Thefinaleventinthe2104MiddleAtlanticRoadRacingSeries,akaMARRS,washostedbytheWashingtonD.C.Region,SCCA,atSummitPointtrackonOctober4and5,2014.Raceconditionswerecoolanddrywithsomeovernightrain.However,thetrackdriedquicklyduetolittlecloudcover.TheformatwastypicalforaMARRSweekend.TherewerequalifyingsessionsSaturdaymorningfollowedbyqualifyingracesforeachgroup. Sundayincludedtwobriefhardshippracticesessionsat8:30am.ThemainMARRSpointsracesfollowedfornineracegroups.Therewasavariationtothenormalschedule.TheopenwheelandprototypeshadabonusracejustafterthelunchbreakonSunday.Asyouwillsee,oneofourregionmembersbenefitedfromthis. SixdriverfromtheSusquehannaregiontookpartinMARRS9.Theywere:GeorgeHoutzinaformulacontinentalVanDieman,ChuckBuczeskieinanimprovedtouring/SDatsun240Z,AlanLesherdrivingaTouring/4DodgeNeon,RyanHeishman,GaryShenkandJimRobertsinMazdaMiatas. HeishmanstartedwellanddrovewellintheSpecMiataracebuthadlateraceissueswhichcausedhimtofinish18thoverall,andafewlapsdown.HedidnotreturntocompetitiononSunday.ShenkandRobertsdidcompleteboththequalifyingandpointsracesintheShowroomStockMiataclass.ThesecarsaremorerestrictedthanSpecMiata;but,youwouldn’tknowthatbythelaptimesandthefiercecompetition. Garyfinished6thonSaturdayandfellbackto16onSunday.Jimhadthingstheotherwayaround,finishing23rdonSaturdayandmovingupto18thintheSundayrace.BothSpecand
