OASP and CASP combine a challenging and stimulating academic syllabus focussing on each individual student’s needs with a full social program designed to make every student’s summer exciting and unforgettable. The academic content is based around a combination of small-group tuition and one-to-one supervisions with expert tutors from Oxford and Cambridge. This encourages students to explore new or favourite topics in depth, and in a highly-supportive environment.

The Oxbridge Advanced Studies Program allows students to experience life as an Oxford or Cambridge undergraduate, and also gives students a real advantage in the competitive world of college applications.

OASP and CASP are operated by Bucksmore Education, who have run summer schoolssince 1979. Bucksmore has an excellent, international reputation as a provider of high-quality summer programs. In 2013 students from 55 countries attended a Bucksmore summer course.

The Oxbridge Advanced Studies Program is a prestigious academic summer course for high-school students aged 16-19. It is a unique opportunity for high-achieving studentsto live, study and socialise in beautiful Oxford and Cambridge University Colleges. Students travel to Oxford (OASP) and Cambridge (CASP) from all over the world. OASP is held in Brasenose College, which is over fi ve hundred years old. Brasenose enjoys the best location of any Oxford University College, right in the heart of the historic city and next to the famous Bodleian Library and Radcliffe Camera. OASP classrooms and the impressive college dining hall are in the main college buildings.

All OASP students have a comfortable single study bedroom in the Frewin Court Annexe of Brasenose College. Frewin Court is a quiet and secure residential courtyard a short ten-minute walk from the main college, next to the Oxford Union debating chambers.

Oxford’s ‘dreaming spires’, cobbled streets and world-famous university provide a fantastic backdrop to our Oxford summer program. In the 2010 UK General Election, over 100 Oxford alumni were elected to the House of Commons. International leaders from 30 other countries have also studied at Oxford, making it the ideal summer location for ambitious students.

CASP is located in Magdalene College, which was founded in 1428 and is the seventh oldest Cambridge University College. Located just north of the city centre on the River Cam it enjoys the longest riverfront of any college. Magdalene is famous for housing the diaries of Samuel Pepys, the writer who recorded the events of the Great Fire of London in 1666. Older, more traditional Magdalene buildings such as the famous Pepys Library are complemented by the new Cripps Court accommodation and teaching block.

Student bedrooms, teaching rooms and the dining hall are all located in the main college buildings. CASP students all have a single room, half of which are en-suite.

Cambridge is a small, intimate city dominated by impressive university buildings. It is the perfect location for students wanting a traditional English summer school. CASP students will follow in the footsteps of the 10 Kings and Queens, 45 Presidents and Prime Ministers, and 89 Nobel Prize winners who were all educated at Cambridge University.

In 1209 scholars left Oxford after an argument with the local people and founded Cambridge University. The colleges and academic institutions began to be established in the thirteenth century and today it is impossible to tell where the city ends and the university begins. Today Cambridge is a quiet but grand city in the east of England and Cambridge University is often rated as the best university in the world.

The Oxbridge Advanced Studies Program is designed to provide students with a well-rounded educational and cultural experience. The Oxford and Cambridge University teaching method is based on small-group seminars and one-to-one tutorials, and this experience also lies at the heart of our summer programs.

This creates a lively and rewarding learning environment for all our students to engage with new and exciting academic ideas. We also offer challenging masterclasses, creative workshops and cultural excursions alongside a full activity program in and around Cambridge.Students can attend OASP and CASP for either two or four weeks. It is also possible to combine two weeks of OASP with two weeks of CASP.

Seminars and Tutorials

Small-group seminars introduce students to new ideas before encouraging lively discussions. Students choose two subjects tostudy – the list of options can be found overleaf. The exciting selection of subjects covers the Arts, Humanities and Social & Natural Sciences.

Students receive four hour-long seminars in each subject per week as well as one individual tutorial. They may select a third subject upon arrival but this is dependent on their personal timetable. Our student-centred approach offers a high degree of personal attention, student involvement and constructive appraisal of ideas.

Students are expected to prepare work and ideas for each seminar and tutorial. Tutors will often set reading for the following day which will need to be done outside of class. Most tutors will also have a recommended reading list for students before arriving in the UK. These will be available nearer the summer.

The Oxbridge Advanced Studies seminars and tutorials are designed to help students bridge the challenging gap between high school and college. Students are challenged to approach new or familiar ideas from different and more mature perspectives than they would have come across at high school. All levels of knowledge and experience are welcomed and our tutors grade the content appropriately.

Workshops, Master Classes & Social Program

A two-week course includes three workshop preparation sessions and a fi nal presentation by all students before the farewell dinner and graduation ceremony. Master Classes are held on a weekly basis with a different topic each week. An optional two-hour SAT or IELTS preparation class is also offered every week at no extra cost.

Students also enjoy three full-day excursions and one half-day trip every two weeks. The remaining periods will be fi lled with exciting social events in and around Oxford and Cambridge.

Macro and Micro Economics

Now more than ever economic matters are crucial to our everyday lives. While microeconomics studies the economic behaviour of the individual unit, such as a person, household or individual fi rm, macroeconomics focuses on all of the units combined together and is the study of the system as a whole. This course introduces basic concepts and tools used in macroeconomics analysis such as the theory, measurement and determination of national income, budget defi cits, national debt and exchange rates. Politics & International Relations

With the growth of globalisation few things have a bigger impact on our everyday lives than politics and international relations. As the University of numerous of British Prime Ministers, and also the almae matres of many other world leaders, Cambridge and Oxford are the ideal locations for this course. The course will introduce students to the theoretical background of international relations before examining historical topics and analysing the behaviour of states and international organisations. International Business Management

In today’s rapidly developing globalised economy, it is imperative that future leaders of their generation learn how to transcend borders and manage across boundaries. In this course, students will look at the issues

Introduction to English & European Law

The English legal system is one that is unique in its set-up compared to the rest of Europe. This course will seek to provide a comprehensive introduction to English law, exploring questions such as what is law, and how is it made? What is the difference between criminal and civil law? What is the relationship between UK and EU law? Specifi c areas of the law will then be examined including criminal Law and the tort of negligence. O

Introduction to International Law

This course provides an introduction to the rules and procedure of international Law by exploring the different areas it encompasses. The history of international law will be examined, to give some context, before focusing on the more specifi c topics of the international protection of human rights, recognition, jurisdiction and the use of force, and the organs of the United Nations. This subject is ideal for those looking to go on to study law at university level or those with a general interest. C

Psychology

The study of human behaviour has captured scientifi c minds ever since ancient Greek philosophers theorised that mental illnesses were of a physical, rather than divine nature. Studying Psychology brings a greater understanding of people, meaning that whatever career you choose to pursue, a background in psychology can boost your employability. This tutorial covers key issues in social and cognitive psychology, nature vs. nurture, and psychological research methodology. O

Oxford Literary Greats

Oxford has long been a source of inspiration for fantastic fi ction. It was from Oxford that a group of children walked through a wardrobe to a place called Narnia. Alice went down a rabbit hole, Bilbo and Frodo Baggins set off for Middle Earth, and Harry Potter even went to school here. What is it about Oxford that made these stories happen here? What do these stories mean? Why have they grown more popular with age? These are some of the questions this course will seek to answer. O

Foundations of Philosophy Oxford University has educated and played host to some of the fi nest minds, and biggest names, in philosophy such as John Locke. The course will examine the foundations of philosophy going back as far as Aristotle and Plato, examine the basic principles of philosophy before students will examine some of the engaging philosophical questions that have occupied great minds in more recent years. O

Philosophy in Literature

Many works of fi ction explore themes centred around the nature and meaning of the human experience. This tutorial examines serious and thought-provoking philosophical issues that fi nd their expression in the words of authors rather than in philosophy textbooks. A wide range of British, Continental and American authors across a spectrum of genres will be studied, focussing on topics such as the good and evil in the self, despair and redemption and meaninglessness and absurdity. Great British Poetry

Boasting such prominent alumni as Alfred Lord Tennyson, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Sylvia Plath, what better place to study British poetry than Cambridge University? This course focuses on some of the most infl uential poets throughout literary history, including the sonnets of Shakespeare, the mythological themes of Tennyson, the romantic poetry of Wordsworth and Coleridge and the confessional style of Plath. You will also gain some practical writing experience with appraisal of your work and suggestions for further development. C

Creative Writing

The writer Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “There is creative reading as well as creative writing.” We have taken these thoughts on board in our tutorial. Looking at the working methods of successful traditional and contemporary authors, students build up a writing ‘tool kit’ of their own. Students produce their own work, both in groups and individually, putting what they have learned into practice with verse, prose or drama. This is the perfect tutorial for students with a passion for literature and a big imagination. O

Empires & Revolutions The period from 1625 -1815 was a time of change for Britain, America and France. At the beginning and end of this period, people in Britain and in the Continent were governed by monarchies that seemed living symbols of the enduring power of traditional forms of rule. In the intervening years, however, kings on both sides of the English Channel had been executed and republican governments had taken their place, whilst emerging Empires faced their own threats of ‘nationalist’ rebellion, not least the American challenge to the hegemony of British rule. These dramatic developments will all be considered as part of the course. O

Spies & Espionage

The Cold War was perhaps the height of romanticised espionage with countless fi lms and novels on the subject. This course looks into the truth of Cold War espionage, separating fact from the fi ctitious worlds of James Bond or Jack Ryan. The infamous ‘Cambridge Five’ spy ring will also be examined, showing how Cambridge played its part in this most intriguing of subjects. C

Cambridge Authors & Thinkers

The University of Cambridge has produced a whole host of well-known authors in its 800-year history. From Lord Byron’s Don Juan to Zadie Smith’s White Teeth, the city has provided inspiration to generations of writers and thinkers over the years. Step into the authors and thinkers’ shoes during your time in Cambridge by selecting this tutorial to appreciate your surroundings even more. This is a great course for students with a passion for literature or history. C

Shakespeare’s Plays and Elizabethan England This course sets the works of Shakespeare in context, examining his treatment of social, historical and political themes and the factors that infl uenced his writing. During the course we will focus on love, the court and marriage; contemporary gender roles and stereotypes; political and religious turbulence in the reign of Elizabeth I; the Tudor Myth and its effects on Shakespeare’s presentation of historical events. Classical Civilisations

The civilisation of the Ancient Mediterranean made tremendous contributions to the development of Western society as a whole. Whether you want to learn languages, read literature, explore the effect of the past on the present, or learn to apply science to arts, a grounding in Greek and Roman culture can be benefi cial for everyone. This tutorial tracks major intellectual and cultural developments in both societies, including philosophy, mythology, science, history and literature. C

History of Art

Since time immemorial art in all its forms has been used to convey human understanding of the world; from religion, to science, to ideals of beauty and beyond. This course will examine how art has changed over time and what it can teach us about the past, allowing students to analyse and evaluate art works. O

Medical Biology On the course, you will gain an overview of the workings of the nervous and immune systems, both having profound implications for human health. This will help you examine the arguments of nature versus nurture for the causes of some ‘modern’ diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. This is an ideal course for students wishing to study medicine, or for those with an interest in the issues surrounding our future health. C

Algebra and Calculus

For those wanting to further their knowledge in the fundamental mathematical subject of Algebra, the course includes polynomials, linear and quadratic equations, irrational and complex numbers, inequalities, problem-solving, conic sections, co-ordinate geometry and logarithms. The module follows on from Algebra in Calculus and focuses on functions, curve-sketching, inequalities, complex numbers, defi ning the derivative, the defi nite integral and a study of differential and integral calculus. Probability & Statistics

This course aims to give a broad understanding of numerous areas of probability & statistics. Topics include the concept of conditional probability, an analysis of Binomial, Poisson and Normal distributions, regression, correlation and the concept of a statistical test. C

Film Studies

From Charlie Chaplin to Avatar, ‘moving pictures’ have been entertaining audiences for over a century. The growth of Film Studies as an academic discipline testifi es to the importance of examining fi lm not only as a cultural artefact, but also as an infl uential art form. Looking at fi lms from a range of directors, genres and time periods, this course provides an introduction to fi lm history, theory and criticism, perfect for those with a passion for the silver screen. Website Design & Programming

In today’s digital age all companies have websites, and all websites need to be designed and developed. Whatever career you choose to pursue, a foundation in web-design will certainly come in handy. The aim of this tutorial is for students to understand the web and key technologies, including audio and video streaming, graphics and motion graphics, e-commerce, and user experience design. Students will gain practical experience as well as focussing on the theory of web-design. O

Applications of Engineering

As Albert Einstein put it, “Scientists investigate that which already is; engineers create that which has never been.” Engineering is an extremely broad fi eld of study, embracing everything from electronics to space exploration. This tutorial will provide students with an overview of the practical applications of engineering in different fi elds, including electrical and mechanical, as well as offering the

opportunity for some hands-on design and experimentation. This course is the perfect partner to our mathematics and science tutorials. C

The Physical World

Physics is one of the oldest academic disciplines, tracing its origins back two millennia when astrologers tried to explain the world around them by gazing at the stars. Since then classic physicists, including paradigm-shifting Cambridge graduate Isaac Newton, have changed the manner in which we understand the world. This course covers the major breakthroughs in classic physics, beginning with Newton. Students will gain a foundation in areas of modern physics including relativity, quantum mechanics and cosmology. Chemistry Matters

Chemistry concerns itself with atoms and their interactions with other atoms to form chemical bonds. This course provides a comprehensive review of atomic structure, amount of substance and bonding principals before giving students an introduction to organic chemistry, as well as looking at the applications of chemistry, including energetics, kinetics and equilibria. An ideal course for a student looking to study chemistry at degree level, although this is not a pre-requisite. C


Higher Education

CASP and OASP students typically intend to apply to competitive colleges and universities across the world. The academic experience offered by the Oxbridge Advanced Studies Program provides an excellent preparation for this, helping students to make the transition to a more independent and self-motivated learning style.

A summer program in Oxford or Cambridge University is always an impressive addition to any higher education application, and can make a big difference in the competitive world of college applications.

Increasing numbers of students are interested in applying to a British university. Specifi c guidance on applying through the UCAS system can be arranged upon request. Both OASP and CASP provide an invaluable insight into life as an Oxbridge undergraduate.

SAT and IELTS Preparation

Students can choose to study either two hours of SAT or IELTS preparation per week. There is no extra cost but students will miss some of the activity program. The size of the group should be between ten and twelve students, but it depends on the popularity of the options. The maximum class size is fi fteen students.


Our Staff

The success of OASP and CASP hinges upon the enthusiasm and commitment of our tutors. The majority of tutors have taught on the course before and are Oxford or Cambridge University graduates. All our tutors have a real passion for their subject as well as a wealth of teaching experience. Tutorial and seminar content is designed specifi cally by each tutor and it is tailored to suit the ambitious high-school students who attend our programs.

Academic support outside the classroom is provided by the Course Director and a team of Counsellors who are on site 24 hours a day. Our residential staff are all very dedicated and committed to ensuring every student on the program receives the highest possible level of academic, social and emotional support.

Academic Credit

Every student will take home a CASP or OASP certifi cate and full report card written by the Course Director and their personal tutors. Reports include an assessment of progress and achievement as well as suggestions for consolidation and further studies.

Where requested, a transcript of the report and a detailed syllabus can be sent to schools for academic credit. We can liaise as necessary with a student’s school to ensure that the subject material and delivery fi t in with specifi c requirements. Students who wish to receive a credit transfer should consult their school guidance counsellor.

Please note: academic credit is only available on a four-week course. Students attending for only two weeks cannot request credit.

Journalism A team of students will compile and edit articles from the student body to create an end-of-course yearbook and student magazine. Photos, profi les & cherished memories can all be included in this perfect course memento. O C

Film Production Students interested in the different aspects of fi lm making and production are given guidance with the basic methods and techniques involved, working towards the production of short fi lms on topics chosen by the group. O C

Drama For those with dramatic fl air, this is the ideal workshop to release it. No previous experience is required, although enthusiasm and creativity are essential. Ideal for both novice thespians and matinee idols. Previous weekly workshops have ranged from Shakespeare to stage combat and improvisation classes C

Music Students are encouraged to perform together, in either classical or more modern musical styles. A range of instruments are available and all levels can be taught by our experienced staff. More adventurous students are also encouraged to perform at open-mic nights in Oxford. O

Creative Writing Do you see yourself as the next J.K. Rowling or William Wordsworth? This workshop, led by a professional novelist and theatre critic, is the ideal option for students who love the written word and want to express themselves through poetry, short stories or a stream of consciousness. The Oxford/Cambridge Experience Oxford and Cambridge are unique cities. Students choosing this workshop will research and present on famous university buildings such as the Radcliffe Camera or the Wren Library. A unique insight into Oxbridge history and culture. O C


The Oxbridge Advanced Studies Program is designed to offer a well-rounded academic and social experience. Students need to have a creative output as well as developing academic skills. All students will perform or present their work at the graduation ceremony at the end of every two weeks. Workshops and Master Classes


As well as the workshops, students will also participate in a weekly Master Class. These sessions explore key skills essential for success in further education and future careers.

Debating

Cambridge and Oxford Universities share one of the fi nest debating traditions in the world. Many political leaders have studied here and a huge range of public fi gures from the Dalai Lama to President Reagan have spoken at the world-famous Oxford and Cambridge Unions. Students are coached in the art of constructing coherent arguments, developing analytical skills and countering their opponent’s point of view. A formal debate will be held at the end of this class.

Pitching and Presenting

Public speaking is now an integral part of undergraduate programs. Developing and refi ning oratorical skills will lead to success in education, business and life in general. Students will learn about the theories behind the successful pitching of ideas and how to engage your audience. This class gives students the opportunity to practise these techniques in a challenging but secure environment.

Negotiating

Negotiating is both a science and an art. Harold Macmillan once famously said, ‘Jaw-jaw is better than war-war.’ It is a vital skill in all aspects of life from politics and business

to everyday tasks. This class provides students with a grounding in negotiation theories, strategies and tactics, building towards a fi nal task taken from leading international business school models.

Problem Solving and Critical Thinking

This Master Class presents students with a series of logical problems which must be calculated and assessed. Blundering into complex problems can be disastrous and undergraduate degrees require all students to have a solid grounding in logical reasoning and critical thinking.

Social Program and Excursions


Around Oxford & Cambridge

The cities are two of the most popular sight-seeing destinations in the UK. Students are taken on orientation tours around the cities and colleges at the beginning of the course and can explore these world-famous locations in depth during their stay.

OASP students can explore the Bodleian Library, Ashmolean Museum and Christ Church College where the Harry Potter movies were fi lmed. CASP students will enjoy the Fitzwilliam Museum, King’s College Chapel or a quiet walk through Granchester Meadows along the River Cam. Both Oxford and Cambridge are synonymous with punting which is a fantastic way to spend a sunny summer day. Local Shakespeare productions are often performed in beautiful college gardens, offering a delightful experience for any student.

The Oxbridge Advanced Studies Program is not just about academics. A full calendar of visits and activities is an integral part of the course. Oxford and Cambridge are fantastic cities to spend a summer in and our social program is the perfect opportunity to meet and make friends with fellow students from all over the world.

Excursions

Every fortnight includes three full-day excursions and one half-day trip to exciting locations across the UK, including at least one visit to London. Other destinations include:• Blenheim Palace• Ely & Ely Cathedral• Stratford-upon-Avon• Windsor Castle & Eton• Warwick Castle• Stonehenge & Bath

Students will also enjoy academically relevant visits to local businesses, museums and other cultural highlights of the UK. In addition to the fi xed excursions, OASP and CASP tutors are encouraged to take their students on fi eld trips linked to their lessons.An Oxford v Cambridge debate and opportunity to socialise is held for OASP/CASP students, offering an extra competitive edge between these two famous institutions. This are held on a fortnightly basis, one in each city.

Students are allowed to sign out of college during set periods. OASP and CASP students are older teenagers so they are trusted to explore the cities with their new friends. They must always be with at least one other student and stick to strict curfews.

Evening

After dinner, students can relax after a busy day. We offer a range of activities in Oxford and Cambridge from bowling to cinema and restaurant visits. Some students choose to spend their evenings preparing for workshops or seminars.

Whatever their preference, CASP and OASP provide full social programs that cater to all student needs and expectations. The programs immerse students in UK culture and help them to have as much fun as possible during the summer.

Sport

Sporting activities are optional, but OASP and CASP students are given plenty of opportunities to refi ne their skills in the traditional British games of croquet and cricket. Other opportunities include soccer, basketball, tennis, squash, swimming and even ice skating. Sport sessions are held


Residential Life

Counsellors are on site and available 24 hours a day to attend to any welfare or pastoral issues. Many of our Counsellors are Cambridge and Oxford University students who will be able to share their own experiences with students. All staff monitor students’ progress, their interaction with their fellow students and their wellbeing. It is possible to allow students to visit relatives and leave the college at weekends but written permission from a parent or guardian is required in advance. All meals are provided in the Brasenose dining hall but students can buy their own food in local restaurants or cafes if they wish.

Medical Treatment

All centres have contact numbers for local doctors and hospitals. If a student feels unwell they should contact a Counsellor or the Course Director as soon as possible. First aiders will always be available on site. Parents should notify Bucksmore of any medical conditions in advance of arrival. Comprehensive medical insurance is included in the course price.

Arrivals and Departures

Bucksmore offers a free transfer service from Heathrow and Gatwick airports on designated transfer days. Students taking part in CASP are also eligible for free transfers from Stansted airport. Parents should send fl ight details at least two weeks before arriving if they require this service. Students arriving directly to the centre should also notify us of an arrival time so Bucksmore staff are expecting them.

Valuables

Passport and fl ight tickets are deposited in the offi ce safe upon arrival. For increased security with cash, the Course Director can also take student money and hand it back out during specifi c ‘banking hours’. Students are recommended to bring their own laptops and memory sticks to allow them greater freedom in preparing seminar and tutorial work. All student bedrooms can be locked.
