Welcome to the 5TH Annual OC Film Fiesta!

Half a decade into OC Film Fiesta, we are honored to have met so many amazing people. The communities brought together by OCFF in Santa Ana have ignited a wealth of conversations and partnerships. From bringing together groups to talk about homelessness, food sustainability and even a culinary celebration have sprung great collaborations throughout the heart of Orange County. Each year OCFF has also focused on different geographic locations in the city. We do this to spotlight popular focus on Santa Ana’s local treasures. The historic Courthouse, the gorgeous Santora Arts Building, the Artists Village Promenade, Yost Theater, OCCCA, and the newly christened Frida Cinema are all locations who’s legacy we have showcased. As the oldest downtown in the county, Santa Ana has long been a destination for Arts, Culture and Business innovation. This entrepreneurial spirit was fueled by the many tourists (some of them cinema stars) that visited our bucolic city nestled amidst jacaranda trees and encircled by fragrant orange groves.

How we continue this legacy today, uniting Santa Ana North to South. OCFF 2014 takes the film festival on & off our major avenue, historic Main Street! Starting in UpTown Santa Ana with our opening at the Bowers Museum, then moving to Down-Town’s Frida Cinema and ending in SouthTown on South Main at the new OC Roller Girls skating rink as a part of our City’s new SOMOS event.

This year we celebrate our sun and surf culture with a Latin twist with “Volando Bajo” a Baja Mexi-Kitsch cocktail that open’s this year’s film festival. Then we focus on a dynamic local organization that has transformed our City, Latino Health Access and it’s director America Bracho who were featured in our HBO documentary, The Weight of the Nation. In keeping with our Health & Fitness theme this year, we are presenting two Soccer films, the classic Atletico San Pancho and the newly released Ilusion Nacional. Our second week we dive into a spotlight on the talented students from OC’s School of the Arts (OCSA), and an inspiring doc about kids from undocumented families winning a national robotics competition with Underwater Dreams. Topping off our second Saturday, and in keeping with our technology theme we have the visionary Sleep Dealer by Alex Rivera. This Sundance favorite envisions a future where labor, memory and survival take on mythic aspects.

We close out our time at Downtown’s Frida with a workshop by CBS Diversity Direc-tor Rick Najera and the classic Around the World in 80 days starring David Niven and Cantinflas. Some of our elder audience members may recall that Cantinflas used to love visiting Santa Ana, was a regular at the Yost Theater and the Chico Club on 4th Street, even serving as the Grand Marshal to our Santa Ana Fiestas parade!

As our grand finale we are taking part in Santa Ana’s first Ciclovia event on South Main – SOMOS – with another new addition to our City’s fitness scene, the OC Roller Girls. We’ll have a sneak peek at a powerful new documentary celebrating women & sports, Flat Track Around The World, as well as water station sponsored by MiniOndas and a photo booth featuring the American Heart Association’s newest character “Hidden Salt.”

I hope you will all enjoy making new friends and celebrating our County’s rich his-tory & heritage through cinema!
