    PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

    Welcome to the National Watercolor

    Societys 94th International Exhibition.

Art is the most intense mode

    of individualism that the world

    has known.

    Oscar Wilde

What you will see in this exciting exhibition

of watermedia art is a window into the soul

and individualism of 79 very talented artists.

I hope you enjoy the experience and find clues

as to how they see and interpret their world,

either through a visit to the NWS Gallery or

through viewing the beautiful art in this

    exhibition catalog.

An exhibition of this quality takes an

extraordinarily well-oiled team to pull it off

with panache. A big thank you to our jurors

Katherine Chang Liu, John Salminen, and

Carole Barnes for an outstanding job in

choosing 79 fabulous paintings from 850

entries, as well as selecting our 14 newest

signature members. Our Juror of Awards,

Jean Stern, was perceptive and discerning

in choosing the awards and our traveling

    exhibition. Congratulations to everyone

those who had a painting selected, those who

won an award or were chosen to be included

in the Traveling Exhibition, and to those who

received their Signature status this year.

A special thank you to all who entered and

supported NWS with their entries. Our heartfelt

gratitude goes to the donors of the awards

who help make all of this possible. More than

$42,000 was donated. We could not have

the pleasure of this wonderful exhibition

regardless of how hard we worked without

the faithful art material companies, magazines,

    societies, and individual contributors. NWS

sponsors are listed in our exhibition catalog,

as well as on our website. Check it out!

    www.nationalwatercolorsociety.org

Our NWS Exhibition Director, Penny Hill, is to

be applauded for her generous and dedicated

leadership in pulling this gigantic undertaking

into a beautiful exhibition. A special thanks also

goes to Valli McDougle for the many hours she

devoted to securing our numerous awards, to

emago.com who designed and produced our

exquisite catalog, to Classic Litho who printed

it, and to my entire outstanding board who

all worked so diligently on selection jury day,

award jury day, hanging day, and at the Annual

Awards Buffet. I am so very proud to have

been a part of this process and to serve as

your President again this year. Congratulations

again to each and every artist in this exhibition.

    JURY of SELECTION

We are honored and privileged to be

elected by our fellow members of the National

Watercolor Society to serve as the Jury of

Selection for this years International Exhibition.

We had the exhilarating and daunting

experience of selecting from the near 850

entries, from across the United States, Europe,

Africa, China and many parts of Southeast Asia,

to result in a 79-painting exhibit.

The entries of this International Exhibit

reflect the versatility and energy of the many

    aspects of contemporary watermedia. They

represent the excitement globally of what is

being done to express the rich array of cultural

    context and content.

We look for work that is fresh and thought

provoking. We would like to honor the artists

who searched for ways to say something

visually which is authentic in content and has

authority in delivery, artists whose careful

balance between form and content produce

a well thought-out and effectively presented

painting that encourages viewers to interact

with it on a personal level.

Our appreciation to Linda Doll, Penny Hill

and team, for their hard work in preparation of

nearly 850 images which made the viewing

process smooth and expedient. We wish to

thank the NWS working crew on jury day for

their professional efficiency. We had an easy

task because of their thoughtful efforts.

Finally, an exhibit of this scale and caliber

would not be possible without the generous

sharing from all the entry artists who sent in

their best. Their efforts and commitment make

    this show possible.

To the artists who were accepted into

    the show, congratulations. This exhibits

    impressive and expansive visual expressions

truly captured what is the spirit and excitement

    in contemporary watermedia.

    JUROR of AWARDS

I am honored and delighted to have been

asked to be the Juror of Awards for the

    National Watercolor Society 94th Annual

International Exhibition. It is a distinction I will

    always value.

In my career as an art historian, art gallery

director and museum director, spanning over

fifty years, I have juried and judged over 70

exhibitions at events throughout the country.

This one, the National Watercolor Society 94th

Annual International Exhibition was among the

most prestigious and without a doubt one of

the most difficult I have encountered.

I am grateful to the jurors who worked

tirelessly to select such a prestigious array of

works of art. Surely, it made my job as Juror

of Awards much simpler as the jury selections

insured that I could not fail at selecting a

    group of worthy recipients.

Also, I want to offer my congratulations to

all artists who were juried for inclusion in this

meritorious exhibition. To be included in such

a sterling exhibition is strong testimony to the

artistic excellence of these artists. As for my

part in this event, I want to reassure all artists

that I was not tasked with selecting the best

artists in the show, but rather to identify the

best works of art submitted for judging.

In my judging, I look for art that enriches

the viewers life, and that definitely includes

beauty, an aspect of art that often is neglected

in contemporary society. I also look for

    technical elegance and craftsmanship, that

is to say, the confidence that comes with

someone who has mastered the tools at the

disposal of the artist. With representational

art, color and form are my concerns, and

    that includes drawing, perspective, light

and composition. In looking at abstract

works, I feel my way through the painting,

checking for emotional connections as well as

    craftsmanship and originality.

I am grateful for the opportunity to be

associated, in a small way, with the National

    Watercolor Society, the foremost organization

for water-based media in the world. It is such

an honor! I want to thank Penny Hill and

her staff for making my visit pleasant and

productive, and for being so caring and

courteous to me and my wife, Linda.

I look forward to future collaborations.

    2014 NWS LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

    Rex Brandt

Rex Brandt was born 100 years ago in San

Diego, California. Showing interest in art at

a young age, Brandt started taking Saturday

classes at the Chouinard Art Institute while still

in junior high. He continued on to graduate

from Riverside Polytechnic High School and

Riverside Junior College with honors. He then

received an M.A. in Fine Arts from UC Berkeley,

where he studied under Hans Hofmann

    (1880-1966) whose influence geared him

towards abstract expressionism. His early work

was so impressive that in 1935, he became the

youngest painter in America to be included

in Malletts Index of Artists. Brandt continued

his art education doing post-graduate work at

both Stanford University and the University of

    Redlands in 1938.

In this time period, American artists were

attempting to make artistic styles that were

    uniquely American, attempting to create

something more organic and original to their

respective areas. When Brandt moved back to

Southern California with his wife Joan Mallock

Irving in the late 1930s, he was welcomed

into a group of artists from the California

    Watercolor Society, which included Millard

    Sheets (1907-1989), Milford Zornes (1908-2008)

and Barse Miller (1904-1973). These California

Watercolorists were particularly noted for taking

watercolor to an entirely new level by using

larger paper formats, working very quickly en

plein air, using wet on wet techniques, and

using bold, bright colors. He received his first,

and most cherished award, at the California

State Fair in 1934, where he took first place

in watercolor. Many more awards were soon

to follow. In the spring of 1940, Rex and Joan

purchased a summer home, which they admit

was really just a shack, for $250 in Corona

Del Mar. They later transformed the home into

an estate spanning four lots and appropriately

dubbed Blue Sky. Realizing that teaching was

one of his passions, he and Joan along with

Phil and Betty Dike teamed up to establish the

Brandt-Dike Summer School of Painting at Blue

Sky in 1947. In these workshops, the Brandts

and the Dikes would teach their students using

the plein air method of painting outdoors.

Brandt and Dike taught their students to paint

what they felt, not necessarily what they saw.

As a result of the need for basic workbooks

on technical aspects of watercolor for the

    summer workshops, Brandt began his

publishing career which included Watercolor in

15 easy Lessons, Watercolor with rex Brandt

(1949), the Winning Ways of Watercolor (1973),

and the Artists sketchbook and its Many

uses (1966). When Brandt passed away from

a heart attack at his home in Corona Del Mar

at the age of 85, he died one of the most well

    decorated, highly esteemed watercolorists the

    United States has ever seen.

He served as President of NWS in 1948

and was a good friend and mentor to many of

our NWS members including myself and, on

this 100 anniversary of his birth, we wanted to

remember and reflect on his achievements.

    Thank You Rex Brandt!

    Linda A. Doll President, nWs

to achieve a pitch that comes spontaneously.

    TRAVELING EXHIBITION 2015

    THE NWS TRAVELING EXHIBITION

Since 1925, the National Watercolor Society

has chosen a select group of paintings to travel

the US as ambassadors of the NWS and the

fine artists within its memberships. Reaching

fine art venues across the country the NWS

Traveling Exhibition exposes the NWS and its

members to thousands of additional patrons

and serves to inspire artists who might never

have the chance to see the actual works. Over

the years, the traveling exhibition has included

works by such American masters as Edward

Hopper and Andrew Wyeth, and contemporary

masters too numerous to name here.

    Approximately 30 paintings from the

International Exhibition are juried into the

Traveling Exhibition and spend the next year

    being displayed in venues representing

some of the finest galleries, art centers

and museums across the United States.

    Recent venues have included:

NATIONAL WATERCOLOR SOCIETY Past, Present, and Future

With an exciting vision and a new apprecia-tion for an old art form, the California Water Color Society was founded in 1920. As the country grew, painters found inspiration in the expansive western lands and were, in their way, pioneers of a new spirit.

The name of the society has changed twice since that time: first in 1967, to California National Watercolor Society; then in 1975, when the members voted to become simply the National Watercolor Society. The first exhibition was held at the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art, which later became the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The first twenty-five annual exhibitions were held there. From 1946 through the early 1960s, exhibitions were often at the Pasadena Art Museum but also in Santa Barbara, San Diego, and the San Francisco area. From the late 1960s through the 1970s, Laguna Beach Museum of Art was most often the host gallery, in addition to the Otis Art Institute and the Palm Springs Desert Museum. Throughout the 1980s until 2010, the annual shows were held at the Brea Civic Cultural Center, the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton and the Riverside Art Museum.

Throughout the 1950s, a biennial drawing and print show was also presented. Most years there is a show only for Signature Members. In 1956, the Exhibit of California and Canadian Watercolours was held in both countries. In 1960, Mexico City hosted La Sociedad de Acuarelistes de California. The past presidents were honored in 1976 and 1987 with shows at the Brand Library Art Center. To broaden the collections of watercolors accessible to the public, the Society donated twenty-five paintings spanning the early years (19251954) to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The selections from 1955 to 1980 were on loan to the Laguna Beach Museum of Art until 1989.

Although NWS is obviously an exhibiting society, it is also an educating society. The images of its annual exhibitions are available for purchase on digital media as well as full color catalogs. Its traveling exhibitions visit collegiate and public galleries and museums throughout the United States and Canada. Special written materials are often prepared for these institutions. In conjunction with the

annual exhibitions, lectures and orientation programs are made available to docents of the host museums. As an additional service to the public, an Associates membership category was implemented. People who are interested in watercolor, or art in general, may become Associates and attend openings, shows, and Society events. They receive all the NWS publications and may submit work for the juried shows for the same fees as Signature Members. This membership provides an opportunity for involved patronage by those who wish to appreciate, encourage, and support the efforts of the society.

In recent years, in an effort to reach members throughout the country, regional representatives have been organized to stay in touch with board activities in California. It is a way to plan shows in different areas and to find new locations for travel shows, which are selected from annual exhibitions. Regional invitational shows have been held in Colorado and Arizona.

The Society also exhibited watercolors from its permanent collection featuring award-winning works from the 1955 to 1985 Annual Exhibitions. This show was held in January 1993 at the County of Los Angeles Century Gallery in Sylmar, California.

In 1995, all available NWS archival material including slides of our shows, catalogs and records were sorted, classified and delivered on August 30, 1995 to the Smithsonian Institution Branch Office located in the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. This material has now been accepted under a Deed of Gift and has become an official part of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. When processed, this material will be accessible to everyone through the information highway.

In 1999, the National Watercolor Society purchased a building at 915 South Pacific Avenue, San Pedro, California, 90731. This has become the Societys center for offices, gallery, workshops and a place to house our growing permanent collection. Since 2009, the NWS All-Member Exhibitions and the International Exhibitions have been held in this newly renovated gallery.
