Whether watching a performance or participating in cultural activities, Imagination Takes Flight into the realm of limitless possibility and endless inspiration for these curious leaders of tomorrow.

For St. Albert – The Botanical Arts City, culture is a part of our community identity. For over three decades this Festival has served as a signature cultural event in our region, cultivating countless young minds and building bridges between art, culture and education.

Hundreds of energetic volunteers, bursting with community pride and spirit, come together every year to bring this world-class event to St. Albert. When over 50,000 people come out to ‘play’ in our city, the economic impacts are as widespread as the Festival’s range of international performers. As Minister responsible for Alberta’s vibrant cultural sector, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 33rd annual Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival!

For five spectacular days each year, the heart of downtown St. Albert erupts with children’s delighted laughs, high-spirited cheers and astonished gasps. This Festival connects visitors from across Alberta with one-of-a-kind cultural experiences. From whimsical roaming artists to hands-on art projects and theatrical and musical performances, this Festival is sure to amaze and delight attendees of all ages.

Without encouragement, those tiny sparks of precious inspiration risk fading just as quickly as they appeared. But the Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival is a magical place, where inspiration is nurtured, where exploration is encouraged and where, finally, Imagination Takes Flight.

The Friends of the Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival Society are proud to support such an exceptional event in our city—an event that draws families to St. Albert from all across Alberta to spend time together laughing, singing, imagining and learning.

Through government advocacy and fundraising initiatives like the Festive Fundraiser and the always scrumptious Cupcake Challenge, the Friends are able to help Festival staff maintain the levels of artistic excellence, as well as accessibility, patrons have come to expect from the Children’s Festival. It is vital that we keep this unique opportunity open to all children to discover and develop; we thank each and every one of the businesses, government partners, individuals and volunteers who have supported the Festival this year. It’s almost time for the Festival to take off. And the Friends could not be more excited to be soaring with it!

Everyone knows children have big imaginations, but in a world full of electronic gadgets, it’s easy to forget just how much joy and creativity imagination can fuel. The ability to imagine oneself in another person’s place is important to the development of social skills and empathy. A healthy imagination helps children, of any age, learn to express themselves and develop self-confidence. Albert Einstein once said “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”

By exposing our kids to experiences such as the Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival, we are opening their minds to a bigger and more exciting world. Performances and activities are meticulously planned to introduce many facets of arts and culture. Children will tap into the power of imaginative thinking as they sing and dance to world music, interact with roving artists, listen to stories about faraway places, and create their own masterpieces.

Babes-in-Arms PolicyThe Festival is family-friendly. Babies under 2 years are admitted at no charge when seated on an adult’s lap. The age ratings for each show have been developed to ensure a positive and enriching theatrical experience for everyone. The Festival appreciates your help encouraging small children to practice quiet theatre behaviour in consideration of the performing artists and other audience members.

*This policy does not apply to TELUS Toddler Town. See pages 28 & 29 for more TELUS Toddler Town details.

Age GuidelinesPerformances and activities are rated by age, based on artists’ recommendations and curriculum connections. Please consider these categories as general guidelines as we recognize that parents/teachers are the best judges of what is most appropriate for their children/students. Feel free to contact our School Teacher Liaison or the Arden Theatre Box Office for more information.

First Aid/Lost Kids and Information TentsTwo First Aid/Lost Kids and Information Tents are located on the Festival site: one on St. Albert Place Plaza and one in Lions Park. All lost children will be escorted to an information tent. All lost and found items will be taken to one of the Information Tents during the week of the Festival. After May 31, all items may be claimed through St. Albert Place security. If you have lost something, please call our administration office at 780-459-1600 and we will try our best to help reunite you with your lost item.

Wheelchair InformationThe Festival’s main stage venues and site activity tents are wheelchair accessible. On ticket order forms, teachers must state the number of students in their group who require wheelchair seating. Wheelchair attendants will receive a complimentary ticket.

*Wheelchair seating is limited in some venues.

ConcessionsConcessions that offer delicious snacks and refreshing beverages are located throughout the Festival site. Plenty of green space, ideal for a picnic lunch, surrounds the Festival site. Log on to childfest.com for more information on concessions.

Re-defining the limits of traditional French-Canadian folk music, this versatile trio’s infectious beat is guaranteed to get kids tapping their toes and stomping their feet. Help spread the story of the Peace Crane, by learning the Japanese art of paper folding. The paper crane is an ancient origami pattern that symbolizes health and peace. Asian legend states that when 1,000 origami cranes are folded a wish can be granted. Using an ordinary ‘peace’ of paper, kids will add one crane to the growing installation moving through the hallways of St. Albert Place, and another to share the message of peace and hope with their own family and friends at home.

Hundreds of paintings. One masterpiece. Led by renowned local artist Lewis Lavoie, children paint their own square tile that will become part of a larger mural mosaic known as the Pubble People.

Each painting is important to make the big picture come to life and young painters feel incredible pride knowing that their artistic mark will be part of something even more spectacular, and celebrated by the entire community. Since 2010, the imaginations of over 2,000 school children have been captured in eight unique murals that have become part of the City of St. Albert’s Public Art Collection.

Join this incredibly talented Tanzanian-born actor, author and dramatist for an intimate solo storytelling performance. An award-winning internationally published children’s author, Tololwa’s stories will be told for a variety of ages. Children will be drawn into the performance as they get a chance to sing along in Swahili, English, and maybe even a language of his own creation!

Using string, beads and feathers, kids will create their own special piece of Ojibwe tradition and gain a deeper understanding of the popular craft. Hung above the bed, a Dream Catcher is used as a charm to protect you from nightmares.

While several stories surround the origin of the Dream Catcher, most speak of ‘Spider Woman’ who took care of children and the people on the land until the Ojibwe nation spread. When it became too difficult for her to reach everyone, magical webs were woven to protect the children.

The First Nations people of the Plains did not have words and letters to tell stories of their battles, heroes and daily life. They used pictures and symbols to write on rocks, caves and scraps of buffalo hide. Children will re-create Canada’s oldest and most widespread artistic tradition with their own interpretive drawing that can be taken home. Discovering that some of the earliest art in public places was created thousands of years ago by the Plains people, kids will also get to contribute to a collaborative pictograph mural that everyone can enjoy.

Kids have a natural connection to animals - whether it’s the way they feel, the way they move, the noises they make or their general unpredictability. In this activity, children will gain a deeper understanding of this bond as they learn Aboriginal teachings and the value of all living things. Using animals from the Cree Medicine Wheel, kids will choose their favourite, learn about their traits and participate in a group ‘call of the wild’ activity before taking a special memento home.

As a special treat, a Tipi will also be set up where children can flip through animal books penned by Aboriginal authors and listen to the soothing sounds of the flute.

The click of feet walking… the clink of money dropping… the crunch of people eating. While you may not actively notice how many sounds you hear everyday, without them your environment would seem noticeably strange. Join ‘Doctor’ Dave, mad genius of sound, to learn how sound effects and music make movies and games come alive. You will explore the secrets of sound creation and use it to tell a story of your very own which can be saved for your listening pleasure at home.

Curriculum Connections: concepts of pitch and vibration, ways of producing sounds, demonstrating attentive listening.

• We compost food waste, recycle paper, glass, bottles, cans and cardboard to divert compostable material from landfills.

• We encourage the use of alternative transportation, like carpools and bicycles, by offering a free Park-and-Ride service from St. Albert Centre and bicycle racks on site.

• The International Children’s Festival is a smoke-free site.

• Fortis Green Team collects recyclables throughout the Festival.

• Site activities like papermaking encourage creative use of recycled materials.

• We print one certificate of admittance for each class instead of one ticket for every child.

Experience the magic and excitement of children’s theatre before it hits the mainstage! In this rare behind-the-scenes presentation of a staged reading, children will have direct impact on the development of a Canadian-written, Edmonton-developed new work. By providing feedback and meeting the playwright, kids will walk away engaged and inspired.

Based on a true event, The Book of Ashes, focuses on the chief librarian of the Central Iraqi Library who saved as many books as she could (30,000 volumes: almost ¾ of the library’s collection) as foreign troops stormed the city of Basra in 2003. The story is a testament to one woman’s inspiring vision, the value of literature and the wages of war.
