PARKS SPOTLIGHT
Educating our children provides a bright—and green—fu-ture for tomorrow. The Norman Earth Day Festival provides hands-on, kid-friendly family fun that teaches the importance of protecting our earth's air, water, forest, wildlife, and natural resources. The festival originated as Kids for Kindness Day in 2000 at the Little Rivers Zoo. In the following years, this special day, focused on educating kids, developed into a partnership with other organizations and The City of Norman to include recog-nition of Arbor Day and Recycling Day. Although the Zoo remained in operation for only three more years, its legacy of a greener tomorrow is carried on through this annual celebration. Parks and Recreation programs direc-tor Suzanne Terry says the focus still remains on the children. You plant the seed of environmental awareness not when a person is 40. You have to start young." Terry says the exotic animals the zoo provided for the event are missed the most. Even with the missing animals, the event has continued to grow and more organizations have been added to its line-up. All groups provide a unique perspective on teaching the wonder of nature, the value of a healthy community, cultural diversity and respect for the things and people around us. Over 50 organizations and groups will be represented at Earth Day 2014 ranging from certified arborist Don Menzie to Science Museum Oklahoma. The Sam Noble Museum will be providing a simulated fossil dig and Wichita Mountain Wildlife refuge will be educating kids on the
wildlife in Oklahoma that are close to extinction. Other booths will include: bicycling safety, dog park safety, a tree wizard, Two Green Chicks environmentally friendly cleaning business, Habitat for Humanity, Cleveland County 4-H forestry education, food and energy conservation, water rec-lamation, and many more! Kids will have the chance to learn while dancing with the mascots Nuts the Squirrel, McGruff the Crime Dog, and Sparky the Dalmatian. Terry says one of the highlights of last year’s event was the Symbiotic Aquaponic booth that demonstrated to participants how to grow plants in water. This program brings a 25 gallon aquarium on wheels to promote environmental conservation and educational farming services. Symbiotic Aquaponic, LLC is a Norman-based company whose mission is to design and build high quality aquaponic systems that provide all natural produce and fish. This event is guaranteed to provide entertainment and education to the whole family. Join your community at Reaves Park on Sunday, April 27, 2014 for the 11th annual Earth Day Festival and learn new things about the world around us! The festival is free and open to everyone. The first 1,000 partici-pants to the welcome booth will receive a free GreenNorman.org bag full of goodies! Help make an environmental impact on the world around you today and in the future by attending Earth Day 2014 and teaching children the importance of protecting our world. Be the change you wish to see in the world—educating children will ignite that change.

RECREATION SPOTLIGHT
When one thinks of the sports offered by the Norman Parks and Recreation Department Tae Kwon Do may not be one that tops the list however it should! It is an art that allows participants an avenue for physical activity, development of a strict discipline, and a set of self defense skills. For the past thirty years the Norman Parks and Recreation Department has been honored by the presence of Tae Kwon Do instructor and master, Ed Rugh. Master Rugh began teaching in Norman in 1982 after relocating from Michigan as a wrestling coach. Since the introduction of Tae Kwon Do in the Norman Parks and Recreation Department, specifically the Rugh Institute, Norman has seen 150 citizens who have received their black belts. After coaching for many years, Master Rugh became inter-ested in the practice of one of the oldest Korean martial arts, Tae Kwon Do. He trained in Seoul, South Korea and should be noted that Master Rugh’s mentor was a 12 time Korean Tae Kwon Do champion. Master Rugh has a sixth degree black belt and is certified with the Kukkiwon, the official Tae Kwon Do governing organization in South Korea. Also, Master Rugh is the only Tae Kwon Do instructor in the City of Norman who is an active member of USA Tae Kwon Do, the national governing body for the United States Olympic Committee. The Rugh Institute, which is comprised of Master Rugh as well as three other instructors, offer biweekly classes that last eight weeks long and are held at the Norman High School south gymnasium. Classes offered on Mondays and Wednes-days are for beginner youth (ages 5-12), advanced youth (ages 5-12), and adults (ages 13 and up). Tuesdays provide an
opportunity for children and adults of all levels to learn and practice with one another while Thursdays are reserved for children and adults of advanced levels. As is noted, the Rugh Institute offers classes for children and adults and emphasizes that no one will be turned away. Over the past thirty years with the City of Norman, the Rugh Institute has served patrons with varying physical and men-tal impairments. Practicing this martial art has offered many Norman citizens with the peace of mind knowing they have a set of self defense skills. Master Rugh’s main emphasis in all of his classes is the focus on teaching toward the individual. What sets Tae Kwon Do apart from other sports is it is an art that requires no team, no ball, nor any specific setting where it has to take place. Tae Kwon Do is an art that does not discriminate upon age or body size; anyone is welcome and anyone can accomplish what they set out to do. For it is said by Master Rugh, “There is no teacher, only student. There is no student, only teacher.” It is with this note of mutual student teacher respect that sets Tae Kwon Do and the Rugh Institute apart from other sports offered by the Norman Parks and Recreation department. The Rugh Institute has an active Facebook page that pro-vides a forum of class updates, shared Tae Kwon Do related web links, and provides a place where Master Rugh can connect in another way with his students. While Master Rugh may be available through Facebook he may also be contacted through email, [email protected] or by telephone, 405-329-6846. The Rugh Institutes next session of classes begin March 24, 2014.
