ARIEL AIKEN / 2004 Spring Semester in the Rockies

As long I can remember, I have stared at my mother sitting on tof Mount Sacagawea in Wyoming. The photo aged as the yepassed, but the look of complete belonging and happiness on mothers face didnt. I came along after two more courses: a WRiver Wilderness Course in 81 and the Winter Skills Course

Yellowstone in 85. There is no doubt that the things she learned influenchow I was raised. The seven-day canoe trip my parents tome on when I was 4 led the way to climbing Mount ElbertColorado as a mother/daughter team by the time I was 14. A

my adventures were laced with stories and skills she had learnat NOLS. Setting up camp was held to the strictest standardsLeave No Trace. For a child it was a game, like hide and seeInstead of seek, erase all evidence we had been there. It was destined that NOLS was in my future. I saw it arite of passagemy coming of age. Flipping through the NOcatalog and trying to decide which course I wanted to ta

was worse than waitin g for San ta to slide down the chimnAfter much deliberation, I decided on a spring Semes ter in Rockies. My 18th birthday gifts were the necessary items my NOLS equipment list. Checking off gear strewn across tliving room floor, my mom and I bonded in a way that onadventure can offer. As mother and daughter, we walked arm-in-arm through doors of the historic Noble Hotel in Lander. Memories play

    TATE HIGGINS / NOLS Instructor

I was honored to teach the first Wilderness EmergencyMedical Technician (WEMT) course at our new Wyss

Wilderness Medicine Campus with fellow instructorsand a whole team of wilderness medicine educators.

We had a blast exploring the new space with thecampus inaugural WEMT students. There was plentyof simulated trauma, fake blood, classroom learning, and multi-patient rescues. Even during the intensemoments, I couldnt help grinning at the magnificence

of our new home. The classrooms are state of the art, and the hundredsof acres of varying campus terrain make an ideal spotto put learning into action. Its beautiful, but morethan that, its functional, efficient, and designed tooptimize students learning and experience. The WyssCampus is an investment in our students success anda physical reflection of the value and importance weplace in our courses. Last December, 11 Columbia Business School (CBS)students completed the first 10-day CBS LeadershipExpedition to Patagonia. The expedition, a customcourse created by NOLS Professional Training, consisted of 10 days spent in the remote northernPatagonia Mountains. We had the opportunity to focus on the simple

things in life, to receive (and give) sincere feedbackfrom teammates, to face and overcome obstacles neverfaced before, to practice all kinds of leadership, tolaugh, to explore, to reflect, to challenge, to conquer,to support, Maya Mandel, president of the Outdoor

Adventures Club and a second year MBA studentfrom Israel, reflected. Maya was responsible for bringing the course tofruition. Initially introduced to NOLS through aBloomberg Businessweek article, she investigated anddetermined an expedition to Patagonia would bestsuit the CBS students.

I was eager to push myself outside my comfortzone, Maya said. I wanted to create meaningfulrelationships with new colleagues. This expedition is just one of many courses NOLSProfessional Training has created for MBA programs,NASA, the United States Naval Academy, Google, and a diverse group of other businesses, schools, and

organizations. NOLS Professional Training workswith clients to determine their needs and offersinnovative, customized NOLS courses. The inaugural CBS Leadership Expedition toPatagonia was everything I was hoping my MBAexperience would be, Maya concluded. Jesi currently works at NOLS Professional Training, and when not in the office, she enjoys exploring themountains aided by pack, bike, rope, or floating vessel,

painting in her art studio, and blowing her paychecks onplane tickets to foreign countries.

Shortly before my NOLS course, I founded a club at mycollege, the Unity College Outdoor Leadership Council. I had always thought Id be interested in adventureeducation; thats why I was studying adventureeducation leadership and adventure therapy. My NOLScourse affirmed those beliefs and gave me more driveto seek out as many opportunities as possible while Imat college. Coupled with learning the importance ofprofessionalism, preparedness, and stepping up to be a

leader, I returned with the inspiration and skills to makethe Outdoor Leadership Council an invaluable presenceon campus. When I returned from my NOLS course, Irecognized there werent affordable professionaldevelopment opportunities for Unity College students.

COREY FERNANDEZ / 2011 Semester in Patagonia

I was co-leader to our next X on the map, alongside Felipe, ourcourses native Chilean student. We finally paddled into a camp andsaw this beautiful area that was well protected, and, for the first time

in days, it was sunny. But by thetime we woke the next morning, it

was pouring rain with high winds. We werent going anywhere.

Felipe and I knew that when theweather broke, the entire groupwould need to act quickly to makeas much progress as possible; we alsoknew we needed to avoid slumpingmorale. So we established a rhythm

of connecting with one another to assess the conditions and thencommunicating our decisions to the team. By setting a routine, we enabled our team to relax. We werecognizant of our coursemates daily desire to know if they neededto gear up to go on or settle in for another day. Accordingly, eachmorning for four mornings, Felipe and I met as early as possibleto assess the conditions. After reaching our decision, we pulled the

group together. It was established that the purpose of these meetingswas to clearly answer the question of move or stay? When conditions are uncertain, it is particularly important tocommunicate frequently. Its in times of yellow lights, rather thanclear red or green lights that groups can begin to splinter, jump toinaccurate conclusions, or lose faith in leadership if decisions arentclearly communicated.

Throughout the economically challenging years of 2008 to 2010,I watched the CEO of my company take a highly communicativeapproach. This helped circumvent water-cooler conversations andspeculation. In the same way, Felipe and I learned to deliver directionin ways that didnt leave room for differing interpretations or time forassumptions among tent groups. By the time the sun rose on a promising day, the fifth day, we

were all thrilled to be back in our kayaks. We reached our X withnew comfort and confidence in holding a leadership position intimes of adversity and uncertainty.

Corey currently works at Root, Inc., enjoys food and concerts inAnn Arbor, Mich., kayaks Michigan rivers, and is taking up paddleboarding on the Great Lakes.
