Honoring Our Veterans
January 16-17, 2014 – The Cornhusker Hotel, Lincoln, NE Nebraska GREAT PLAINS Conference
Dear Potential Nebraska GREAT PLAINS Conference Attendee, On behalf of the Nebraska Arborists Association (NAA) and Nebraska Nursery and Landscape Association (NNLA), we would like to invite you to attend the 2014 Nebraska GREAT PLAINS Conference. The conference will take place at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln, Nebraska on Thursday, January 16 and Friday, January 17. The NAA and NNLA are excited to be co-hosting the 2014 Nebraska GREAT PLAINS Conference. The conference committee has worked hard to bring in a great line-up of national and local speakers with a wide variety of topics. We are excited about the sessions that we have to offer each day in each tract. The conference is being dedicated to the veteran members of our associations who have served our country. If you have served, please let our office know so we can honor you during the conference. The conference will kick-off on Thursday, January 16 with a welcome from Lt. Governor Lavon Heidemann. Kaizad Irani, highly respected professor at the University of Illinois and seasoned landscape professional, will deliver Thursday’s keynote presentation titled, “Grow to Sell, Sell to Grow – Achieving a Successful and Profitable Balance.” On Friday, January 17, the conference will open with Kris Bachtell, VP of Collections and Facilities at The Morton Arboretum in Illinoi, as the keynote on “New Elms for American Cities.” The conference will conclude with keynote speaker Judith Guido, chairwoman and founder of Guido & Associates, discussing “Trends in the Industry.” The conference offers a two-day tradeshow featuring all the latest products, services, and equipment. Also, learn about educational opportunities and programs. If you have any questions regarding the show, please feel free to contact Kathi Schildt at the Nebraska Arborists Association and the Nebraska Nursery and Landscape Association office. Sincerely, Kent Holm, President Kim Davidson, President Nebraska Arborists Association Nebraska Nursery and Landscape Association
Register now! Early registration deadline is December 27.

Speakers & Sessions
Keynote Speakers
A description of each educational session, along with speaker biographies, can be found on the following websites:
www.nnla.org & www.nearborists.org
Kaizad Irani - Architect and landscape designer, and highly respected professor at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and a program director at Parkland College. “Grow to Sell, Sell To Grow – Achieving a Successful and Profitable Balance”Being able to break away from old, conventional patterns and tread new paths has never been more important than it is today. Against a backdrop of explosive economic, technological and societal change, value added is no longer a quality that’s ‘nice to have’ – it’s a ‘must have’! Design isn’t just a service anymore but an ‘experience’.To succeed in this environment, growers need to have a better understanding of designers and
designers need to better understand growers and their products. More importantly, both need to understand what their customers want – and what to sell and how to sell it! Drawing on his diverse background and areas of expertise, moving easily from concept to example, from a descriptive voice to an experiential one, from the designer’s viewpoint to the grower’s standpoint, Kaizad will provide you the tools to accomplish these goals and help you make a little green in the green industry!
Kris Bachtell - Director at Morton Arboretum including the horticulture, grounds, and facilities operations and director for the Chicagoland Grows® Plant Introduction Program. “New Elms for American Cities”Once a major landscape tree, the American elm (Ulmus americana) was the dominant tree in most street tree and park plantings in northern regions of the United States. Due to its broad range of environmental tolerances, classic cathedral-like form, and other attributes, it was viewed as the “perfect” tree. Unfortunately, it was extremely vulnerable to Dutch Elm Disease (DED), and millions of mature specimens have been lost in the 1930s. Today, as a result of a number of selecting and breeding programs, a completely new generation of elms
is becoming available to beautify and green American cities.
Judith Guido - Chairwoman and founder of Guido & Associates, a nationally recognized public speaker, award-winning copywriter and contributing editor and author to business journals.
“Industry Trends that will Generate Profitable Growth”Market dynamics are a key component of growth and will help dictate your success. Lack of knowledge of key industry trends is almost an absolute path to failure. Learn the latest trends in our industry and how to leverage them for profits from a nationally recognized subject matter expert and former Fortune 500 executive.
