FROM THE PRESIDENT

We continue on a roll towards a stronger organization. With our strategic plan as our guide, we are laying the groundwork so that we can blossom into the gem that we know we can be for the city of Manchester. We are excited at the possibilities that lie before us and are eager to do the work that it will take to put us in that position.

Over the past year we have achieved many goals. Our new development director has begun to lay the foundation that will help not only to friend raise and fundraise but allow us critical access to grants. We obtained a grant to help us get the Ashland #1 in the door, and now this engine that was built here so many years ago has been returned to its home for all to see in its glory.

Our vision is strong and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Our strong committee structure has allowed us to work towards many goals on many fronts in efforts as mundane as updating our policy manuals to adopting an education committee that will help to set programming and exhibit initiatives that will bring our organization into the present day and invigorate our supporters.

I like to say that history is made every day, therefore we have to be dynamic so that we can give our future generations a glimpse of the past. They need to know from where they came to know where they are going. This coming year hopes to be a breakout year for the organization, a year that will help to define the growth of our future. It will take all of us working as team … the Board of Directors, our great staff, our volunteers, our members and all those who have an interest in the good things we do.

We have come a long way over the past couple of years but there is still much work to be done. We must be patient but we must continue down the path of progress. I believe that the Manchester Historic Association, the Research Center and the Millyard Museum can be marquis venues for the City of Manchester. We should be proud to display our heritage for all to see. Let’s make this a great year!

FROM THE DIRECTOR 2014 was an exciting year for the Manchester Historic Association! A highlight of the year was fulfilling a

long-time dream to have an Amoskeag Steam Fire Engine on permanent exhibit at the Millyard Museum. Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers, Louis P. Cote Inc., and the Norwin S. and Elizabeth N. Bean Foundation, we welcomed the Ashland #1 Amoskeag Steam Fire Engine into the Museum in August. Plans are now underway to install a new exhibit focusing on how the engine represents the history of invention and innovation that continues today in the Millyard.

The MHA also hosted a wide variety of lectures and special events, including a unique opportunity to see the view from the Weston Observatory and learn about the history of that part of Manchester. We continue to welcome thousands of visitors from around the country, and even the world, at the Millyard Museum and the Research Center. Visitors are excited about what they learn about Manchester’s story. Their comments in our log book speak for themselves and let us know our museum is indeed a gem – one of which we can be proud! As a repository for Manchester’s past, we continue to add objects and other material to our collection so that we can continue to preserve and share Manchester’s history for future generations. Among the many items received into the collection in 2014 were a 1913 copy of Manchester’s first High School yearbook, a collection of correspondence of the Manchester Traction, Light, and Power Company, and many photographs of Manchester people and landmarks, including photos showing the construction of the Amoskeag Bank Building (1913) and the Queen City Bridge (1923).

The past year saw a number of changes as well, especially in the MHA staff. Aurore Eaton, Jen Yakunovich, Beth St. Pierre, and Ben Baker left to pursue new opportunities. Although we were sad to see them leave, we thank them for their many years of dedication to the MHA and wish them well in their new endeavors. We also lost our long time maintenance coordinator Chuck Cafiero when he passed away in December. Chuck is greatly missed and a bench in the museum was recently dedicated in his memory.

I am truly excited for what the upcoming year holds. With a strong staff and board, we are poised to continue to move forward in meeting the goals of the organization’s strategic plan, including enhancing the Millyard Museum, expanding educational opportunities, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the MHA. I wish to thank all of our members and donors who have helped to further the Manchester Historic Association’s important mission and to make this year a success!

TREASURER’S REPORT

The Manchester Historic Association continued to strengthen its financial position in 2014, with marked

growth in public support, unchanged operating expenses, and a strong return on investments.

Public support grew by 14% in 2014, with increases in contributions and grants, while operating expenses remained essentially flat. This helped the organization chip away at a persistent structural deficit in the operating budget. Robust investment growth totaled $402,713, bringing their value to more than $4.4 million. Considering a $1.6 million beneficial interest in a trust, more than $1 million in other assets, and a $756,051 loan, the organization finished the year with roughly $6.4 million in net assets.

As the trustees wrote a strategic plan and hired a development director, the efforts to ensure the long term financial stability of the MHA are just beginning to bear fruit. For 2015, the trustees hope to minimize the operational deficit that has existed for years and with it the need to tap the unrestricted Jackson Fund. If that can be achieved by controlling expenses and raising additional revenue, the MHA will be well positioned to execute its mission.
