Craft & Design Product Development Project

(재)한국공예·디자인문화진흥원은 한국인의 일상은 물론 세계인이 공유할 수 있는 코리아 라이프

스타일을 계승·확산하기 위해 설립한 문화체육관광부 소속 공공기관입니다. 공예가와 디자이너,

문화산업 전문가 등 문화예술계는 물론 학계와 산업계를 중심으로 한국인의 일상 속에서 공예와

디자인 문화를 누릴 수 있도록 계기를 제공하는 것을 그 목적으로 하고 있습니다. 공예·디자인

관련 기관과의 긴밀한 네트워크를 통해 연구, 전시, 교육, 출판 등 사업 영역을 확장하고 있습니다.

한국의 전통 소재 및 공예 기법에 현대 디자인을 접목한 ‘2014 공예디자인 상품개발 사업’은

심사 과정에서부터 상품성을 고려하여 선발하였고, 참여 디자이너는 자문위원과의 끊임없는

연구와 보완 과정 끝에 대중에 친근한 상품을 선보이게 되었습니다.

산업이 자생력을 기르고, 나아가 참신하고 경쟁력 있는 공예디자인 상품이 해외에서 인정받을

수 있기를 바랍니다. (재)한국공예ㆍ디자인문화진흥원은 앞으로도 공예디자인 상품개발 사업의

지원에 더욱 앞장서겠습니다.

Korea Craft and Design Foundation (KCDF) is a public agency under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism that seeks to continue and spread the Korean lifestyle that can be shared not only by Koreans but also the global community. The objective of KCDF is to provide opportunities to experience crafts and design culture in everyday lives, working with the members of the culture and arts circle including craftsmen, designers and cultural industry experts as well as the academia and industries. By establishing a close network with crafts and design related institutions, KCDF is currently expanding its scope to research, exhibitions, education and publications.

The products developed at the ‘2014 Craft & Design Product Development Project’ combines Korean traditional materials and crafts technique with contemporary design. They were chosen with marketability in mind from the judging stage. The participating designers were able to present products that are friendly to the public after continuous research with the advisory panel and supplementations to their pieces.

KCDF hopes that through the ‘2014 Craft & Design Product Development Project’, the Korean crafts industry will be able to flourish on its own and that Korean craft design products achieve recognition in the global community. KCDF will take the initiative in supporting the development of craft design products.

‘2014 공예디자인 상품개발 사업’은 공예·디자인 관련 분야 종사자를 대상으로 한국 전통 소재

및 공예 기법을 활용한 공예디자인 상품을 개발하였습니다. 디자인, 유통, 상품개발 등 각 분야의

전문가를 심사위원으로 선정하여 두 차례에 거쳐 심사를 진행하였는데, 1차 포트폴리오 심사로

20개의 상품을 선정하고 2차 실물상품 평가로 최종 11개의 상품이 선정되었습니다.

최종 상품으로 선정된 참가자들은 ‘2014 공예디자인 상품개발 사업’의 프로그램 취지에 따라 자문

위원과 3회에 거쳐 워크숍을 진행하였고, 1차 워크숍에서는 국내외 공예디자인의 시장 규모와

진출 전략 파악 및 상품 경쟁력을 키워나갔습니다. 2·3차 워크숍에서는 상품의 완성도를 높이고

포장과 상품가격 등 다방면의 경쟁력을 높이고자 노력하였습니다. ‘2014 공예디자인 상품개발

사업’에서 많은 노력과 고심 끝에 만들어진 공예디자인 상품이 좋은 반응을 얻고, 나아가 공예 산업

발전에 기여할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

‘2014 Craft & Design Product Development Project’ invited crafts and design experts to use Korean traditional materials and crafts technique to develop craft design products. Experts in design, distribution and product development were chosen as judges and two rounds of judging were held. 20 products were chosen by evaluating the portfolio during the first round. Then, 11 products were selected among them as final products during the second round, evaluating the actual products.

The contestants of the final 11 products each held three workshops with the advisory panel with the spirit of the ‘Craft & Design Product Development Program’. During the first workshop, participants identified the size of the craft design market in Korea and abroad. They also put efforts to raise product competitiveness. During the second and third workshops, they focused on the completeness of the product and strengthened competitiveness by paying attention to wrapping and pricing.

We hope the craft design products made with devotion and toil at the ‘2014 Craft & Design Product Development Project’ receive recognition and further contribute to the development of the crafts industry.

공예디자인 상품개발 과정

How Craft & Design Products are Developed

사각형과 원형을 기본으로 디자인한 옻칠 손거울이다. 단풍나무를 기본

소재로 사용하여 내구성을 높였으며, 다양한 색의 옻칠과 자개 패널로

표면을 마감했다. 옻칠은 나무 바탕을 보존하는 기능이 뛰어나 오랫동안

상품을 사용할 수 있게 하며 항온·항습·항균 작용도 한다.

Ott-chil(Korean natural lacquer) hand mirrors, primarily rectangular and circular designs. Maple is used as a basic material for greater durability, while surface is finished with Korean natural lacquering in various colors and mother-of-pearl panels. Because of Korean natural lacquer’s outstanding ability to preserve the wood base, the items can be used over long periods of time and have temperature, moisture, and germ-resistant properties.

에스씨(SC) 시리즈는 철을 가공하여 제작한 문구류 용기 연작이다.

한옥의 창살무늬가 지닌 비례를 응용하여 받침을 만들었고, 페인트로

표면을 마감하여 색감을 강조하고 재료의 느낌을 살렸다. 받침 형태가

모두 달라서 퍼즐처럼 마음대로 배열하여 사용할 수 있다.

The SC series is a collection of stationery containers made from processed metal. The bases use the same proportions from the latticework patterns of the traditional Korean hanok home, with surface finishing in paint to accentuate the color and highlight the texture of the materials. Each base pattern is different, allowing them to be matched freely like puzzle pieces.

조선백자 기법을 활용하여 만든 찻잔과 에스프레소 잔이다. 물레 성형을

기본으로 1260도에서 소성하였으며 화형, 팔각, 누비문, 매화문 총 4 가지의 형태로 제작하였다.

Tea and espresso cups developed using the techniques of Chosun-era white porcelain. Wheel-spun molds are baked at temperatures of 1260 degrees, with four basic patterns: flower shape, octagonal, quilted, and plum blossom.

전통 짜임을 응용한 다과받침 세트이다. 십자반턱짜임을 이용한 사각 다과

받침, 주먹장부짜임을 이용한 찻숟가락받침, 컵받침으로 구성하였다.

짜임 외에도 직선과 곡선, 목재의 색을 이용하여 장식 효과를 주었다.

서로 높낮이가 달라 다양하게 조합하여 활용할 수도 있다.

Refreshment plate sets with traditional woodwork joint designs. They include square plates with a cross-shaped half-lap design and dovetail-jointed teaspoon rests and cup plates. Besides the design, straight and curved lines and wood colors are used for ornamental effect. Differing levels allow for various combinations.

망치로 성형한 작은 통이다. 동판 한 장으로 통을 만들고 같은 재료로

각각의 뚜껑을 제작한 후 다양한 색으로 옻칠 마감하였다. 옻칠을 통해

동의 부식을 막고 오랫동안 사용해도 변색 없이 고유의 아름다운 색을

유지하므로, 장식 소품으로도 활용 가능하다.

Small hammer-shaped jars. The bodies are made from sheets of copper plating, with lids made from the same material, and then finished with different colors of Korean natural lacquer. The lacquer prevents the copper from corroding and preserves the beautiful colors over long periods of time, making the jars also usable as decorations.

#생강(#GINGER) 시리즈는 생강 한쪽의 모양과 닮은 생쪽매듭을 중심

으로 제작한 전등갓이다. 자신의 색을 죽이고 화합해서 새로운 맛과 향을

만들어내는 생강의 특성을 디자인으로 재해석하였다. 전통 매듭을 이용해

빛을 통한 새로운 공간 연출을 제시한다.

#GINGER series is a lampshade made using knots that resemble ginger root. The design is a reinterpretation of the characteristics of ginger: the way it kills off its own color and combines to produce new flavors and scents. The traditional knot is used to show a new way of presenting space through light.

Knitster Bag 시리즈는 손뜨개와 전통매듭을 결합하여 현대적으로

재해석한 가방이다. 소재가 가진 색, 굵기, 성질 등을 이용, 정제된

변용을 통해 전통공예에 현대적 세련미를 가미하였다. ‘어린 왕자’의

보아뱀을 모티브로, 물건을 담으면 늘어나지만 비우면 원래 형태로

돌아오게 제작하였다.

The Knitster bag series is a modern take on knitting and traditional Korean knot crafts in handbag form. The material’s color, thickness, and other properties are given elegant twists that inject a note of modern sophistication into traditional craft design. Taking the boa constrictor from The Little Prince as a motif, the bags are designed to stretch out when items are placed in them and return to their original shape when emptied.

캐스팅 성형 도자와 3D프린트 기술을 결합하여 제작한 머그이다. 몸통은

제주 조랑말의 형상에서 따왔고, 손잡이는 제주 바닷가의 조약돌(몽돌) 형태에 고려 전기 청자향로(청자칠보투각향로)의 칠보문 패턴을 적용

하여 다양한 색으로 염색하고 옻칠 마감하였다.

Cheom mugs made with a combination of slip casting and 3D printing. The mug bodies are modeled on the Jeju Island pony, while the handles feature the Chilbo (“seven treasures”) design from an early Goryeo-period celadon openwork incense burner, reapplied to a figure taken from the pebbles on Jeju’s beaches and finished with dyes and lacquers of different colors.

2D 일러스트로 구현한 한지 알람시계와 테이블 세트이다. 시계 일러

스트를 전통 한지에 한 장 한 장 정성스럽게 실크스크린 기법으로 인쇄

하여 커버를 만들고, 포장용 상자에 무브먼트를 부착하여 재활용하였다.

커버를 바꿔 끼우면 다른 느낌으로 연출 가능하다. 테이블 세트의 테이블

보는 면으로 제작하였고, 볼펜은 한지로 제작하여 구성하였다.

Hanji paper alarm clock and table set based on 2D illust-rations. Each alarm clock illustration is painstaking silk screened on traditional Korean hanji paper to make the cover, with the movement mechanism recycled for use on the packaging. Covers can be changed for different moods. The set’s tablecloth is made with a cotton, and the ballpoint pen is also made with hanji paper.

투광성이 돋보이는 백자 잔이다. 두께가 다양한 자기 소지들을 직접

만들어 마블링하고 물레 성형하여 기벽이 1.5~2mm가 될 때까지 깎아

만들었다. 내부를 유약 처리하여 1280도에서 고온소성하고 외부는 매끄

럽게 연마하였다.

Translucent porcelain cups. Porcelains of different thickness are handmade and marbled, spun into their forms, and shaped down to a base wall of 1.5 to 2 millimeters. The interior is glazed, and the cup is fired at 1,280 degrees before the exterior is polished to a smooth surface.
